When Altair and his family leave for Mongolia, he gifts Malik a token of their friendship (ring, charm, pendant, whatever else), that Malik always keeps close to him. After murder of Sef and Malik being sent to prison, is when things get complicated. Every day in prison is a constant abuse and torture from guards and Abbas, as well as self-hate from blaming himself for not being better leader - letting Altair down. Each time he is being abused, he clutches Altair's ring/pendant/whatever in his hand, to keep himself sane. The little gift from Altair was the only thing he was allowed to keep from his old life. Slowly Malik loses his mind. He becomes delusional. Illusions are his reality escape mechanism. He sees Altair everywhere. Every-time he is raped, he sees Altair making love to him, every-time he is beaten, he sees Altair caressing him etc. With time it gets even worse - he sees himself living a normal everyday life, similar to one before he was sent to prison. Until he is found and rescued by Altair - what happens then I will leave to writer's imagination, just make it sad.
Bonus: +If you could show Malik slip in and out of his illusions - contrast between his dreams and brutal reality. +I'd like a scene where he is beaten to a bloody pulp or raped and still smile through blood, because he is imagining something nice, a happy moment. +It would be amazing to see Malik's abusers' reactions to his insanity too, no?
