Finding Connor

Chapter 15

Charles hurried after his counterpart.

“Wait.”

The man ignored him.

Cousin, wait!”

Finally the Alpha stopped and turned to face him grudgingly.

“Do not think I have forgotten your role in bringing that presumptuous man to this house.”

Charles took a deep breath to calm himself.

“And I do not think it wrong to have done so.”

The man glared at him.

“You can say so after such a display of disrespect and veiled threats?”

Yes, Charles didn't think those helped one whit.

“And does he have no cause for disrespect? When I suggested him, I knew not that he had suffered through your...usurpation of your wife's chosen husband. Knowing now that he was there during what would have been a celebratory event and instead turned into a—“

“Watch your tongue,” came the hissed warning.

Charles wisely chose to heed that warning.

“—terrifying affair, can you say that you are surprised by his demeanor towards you? Have you not earned it when you forced yourself upon his friend?”

The other Charles was silent at this.

“And your invitation now must do little to ease his distaste for you.”

His counterpart grunted.

“And how do you figure that?”

“He knows that you called him due to your wife's continued lack of consciousness since his miscarriage. He arrives to find your wife expecting again. There are only so many conclusions that one may draw from that and the picture it paints is...”

Charles shrugged.

“It is not so complimentary to you, I'm afraid.”

A snort.

“So you say and yet you know well that the community at large would laud me for the way I've treated my wife. I haven't taken any others to bed besides him, I've honored our vows, I've—”

Bullocks.

“—You've forced yourself every single day since you first married him.”

“It was in my rights.”

Charles grit his teeth. Horrifying that his counterpart would respect his wife's body so little.

“But was it in your rights to force the marriage?”

The other Charles pursed his lips but said nothing.

Hah. The man knew it was wrong of him to have done so.

“This is Boston, not the rough Appalachians. Nor the rough areas of Pennsylvania. Nor the wilderness. We do not sanction kidnapping a bride here.”

“It was not kidnapping,” his counterpart snapped. “He agreed.”

Oh for the love of...

“Under duress,” Charles stressed. “With little will of his own. Come now, cousin. This is not a legal court of law. We can be open with each other as only those unlucky enough to be in our position can be.”

“No one else has quite such a unique position as ours,” the other Charles muttered.

True that. Charles did not think there was another two people who were the same people from different worlds.

Nevertheless,” Charles emphasized, “we two both know it for what it truly was. And you can understand why the doctor would be so upset with you for what happened to his friend and for the way you still insist on your husbandly rights, despite it being odious to do so in your situation.”

Really. What was wrong with this other Charles that he thought it laudable to take his wife while his wife was unconscious? It would be like making love to a corpse.

“And yet the man threatened my Connor's health. I invited him to heal Connor, not to hurt him.”

Charles sighed. That was the difficult part wasn't it? Undoing the damage that the good doctor had wrought in his fury at Charles's counterpart.

“He already said he would not harm Connor whilst Connor does not possess enough of his faculties to make a decision for himself.”

“And you trust him?”

“Yes.”

The other Charles considered this.

“I can speak with him to soothe your mind if you like. I can make him see how you are genuinely trying to help your wife—“ though Charles somewhat doubted that himself “—and show him the error of his views.”

His counterpart seemed to considered his offer.

“I do not know if I can trust him even then.”

And Charles wagered that his counterpart did not fully trust him either.

“Then allow me to convince him and have him give you his word. Then observe him in the first few visits. Have him watched while he treats Connor, by Doctor Davies if necessary. You need not take my word for it.”

The other Charles eyed him in suspicious consideration.

“You seem to invest much into this...affair. Not that I am not grateful for your help, but...why?”

Again? Hadn't they traveled this path before?

Charles silently counted to 10.

“I want to return home above all. I want to return home as much as you want me gone. And I am convinced that the only reason I am here is because of what happened to your wife.”

“And yet...”

No. No, the other Charles did not get to doubt his conviction, not after he put more effort into this entire situation.

“I cannot go home until your Connor is well. I have a baby boy waiting at home for me. The only thing left I have of my wife who was my partner in all things and a fine Templar.”

His counterpart started at that. Apparently, he was still surprised by the differences in their Connors.

“I have all the motivation I need to put in my best effort.”

Then he paused.

“I begin to doubt yours. Do you not want your wife better? Do you not want me gone and out of your life?”

“Of course I do.”

“Then prove it. Let me help you. Let me speak with Doctor White. Let me work on him and get him to understand that it does no one good to harm your wife and that you truly mean your wife well. You do not even need to trust him. Observe him yourself to make sure he does no ill. Have Doctor Davies observe him. It is no risk at all. You just need to give him a chance.”

A hesitation.

Then, “I accept.”

Although it was a strange thing to wake up in the morning with tears and a damp pillow, but Connor was used to it by now. In the past the hunter used to have reoccurring nightmares of his village burning, the last memory of his mother, and of course the slave markets. But they had ceased long ago, after he had killed the man who had been responsible for all of it.

However this time, he could not remember what he dreamed of. The nightmares had fled as he returned to the waking world, leaving no trace but the sign of tears. Connor considered himself lucky as he rose out of bed, eager to start the day.

He stretched his limbs for a moment, before padding over to open his bedroom window to let in the cool morning breeze. Connor leaned against the window sill, poking his head out to breath in the fresh air. His eyes drank in the beauty of the landscape, the lush green grass and tall trees. As he exhaled, he could hear the sound of birds chirping from their direction.

What a beautiful day it was.

Perhaps later he could take Aquila out for a ride. He had spend quite enough time cloistered within the manor. Besides, his poor mare had missed him over the term of his pregnancy, and was thankfully being looked after by a handler.

A gentle knock upon the door, roused him away from the window.

"Come in."

Mary and a few of her maids entered his room, exactly on time, as they brought in a wash basic, towels, and some clean clothes.

"Good morning, Mister Lee," they chorused together.

The Omega returned their gentle smiles with a more radiant one. "To you all, as well."

After he washed up, they helped him dressed. Which, he'll admit had seemed oddly invasive at first, considering he had been rather independent the past couple of years since he left home for the first time. However, their service was something he had been immensely grateful for back when his belling had been bugling out to the point where he could not see his toes. But now, with his smooth and taut, it was more of a habit than anything else.

Their hands were always gentle. As if he were delicate and frail, and that the slightest mishandling would break him. But Connor never complained as they fussed over him each day. The servants in his new home were nothing but helpful and attentive, and he could not help but think of how lucky he was to have them while his husband was currently fight a war against England.

Although he missed his Alpha dearly, missed fighting by his side, there were one other who needed him far more. One precious individual that he would do absolutely anything for... Connor could not wait any longer, politely and quickly excusing himself as he briskly walked towards the nursery.

He quieted his steps once approaching the door, carefully turning the handle, and gently pushed it open. The room seemed completely the same when he left it late last night. Clean and immaculate. Not a single item out of place. Connor smiled in appreciation for Mary and her girls. It was as if the wet nurse had never been there before he rose and went to bed.

With bated breath, he approached the infant bed, and smiling down at the tiny little person sleeping inside. As if sensing his arrival, that adorable pouty little mouth opened and yawned as a pair of sleepy milky blue eyes gaze up at him. Connor's smile widened as he reached down and caressed a soft round cheek.

"Good morning, Will."

His son, William John Lee - in honor of Masters Johnson and Pitcairn - cooed in response. Tiny, perfectly former, fingers reached out to him and Connor obliged. After wrapping the babe in a soft blanket, he carefully picked up his child and cradled him with the utmost care.

Little Will was such a tiny little baby. Weighing practically nothing in his arms. His son was very quiet, so well behaved, not once had he cried or wail. Charles would be so very proud of their first born child.

"Mister Lee?"

Connor glanced up from his son's adorable little face to meet with head maid's strained one. Poor Mary, she and Ronald worked so hard to keep the household in top condition while their master's was away. He would have to ask Charles to give them a nice bonus come Christmas.

"Yes, Mary?"

"You have yet to your breakfast yet, sir," the older woman pointed out. "It is not good for your health to miss meals."

He inwardly smirked, sometimes she sounded so much like Mrs.Potts.

"You are right, of course. I will be down to eat, please just give me a few moments." Connor stared back at his son, utterly transfixed as he rocked the baby in arms.

Mary opened her mouth to speak but abruptly closed it as she lowered her head. The head maid's trembling hands clutched tightly at her skirts as she gave curtsey before excusing herself.

"Of course, sir."

She abruptly turned away, and fled from the dark and dusty mausoleum disguised as a nursery, and tried to banish the sight of her Master's beloved Omega... cradling an empty blanket in his arms.

I really feel bad for FW!Charles, unknowingly trapped in this world where he hates his counterpart who is always moody, suspicious, and just a horrid husband. Do wonder if this world's Connor will fall in love with him and Charles will be able to move on with his life in this alternate world. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

Connor...Charles... D:

I really hope Charles is putting out the biggest manhunt ever for Church after this. To have disliked Connor for his refusal to court his son so much that he poisoned Connor...

Haytham must be pretty mad too. His first grandchild, dead because of a vindictive Alpha.

Anon, I love the emotion in here. It's subtle, hiding almost, but it surrounds you before you even know it.

Yeah. Poor Charles has a tough hand here. The only stupidity he engaged in was choosing vengeance over his remaining family (temporarily of course), and he winds up paying for it. ):

Aww thanks anon. Yeah Haytham and Charles have a large scale manhunt for Church, but he's slippery as an eel, and manages to escape them at every turn so far... as well as making a mess for both the army and the Order. But not to worry, he'll get what he deserves.

BTW, got too distracted today, so won't be updating tonight.

Finding Connor

Chapter 16

“I apologize for my bluntness, but your cousin is an ingrate and a brute and does not deserve myself.”

Charles felt like groaning. After having convinced his other self of the importance of retaining Doctor White's services, he had gone directly to the imprisoned doctor himself to persuade the Omega doctor to lend his expertise. He had hoped to find the doctor open to his arguments.

It was not so.

“Doctor White, surely—“

The good doctor whirled about to face him.

“He has nothing but disdain for his wife. He has nothing but contempt for Connor's happiness. Why ought I help him? Why should I devote my energies so that he may benefit?”

It was a tough question, and Charles struggled to come up with a convincing argument.

“He is renowned here after the defeat of the crown, and he may well kill you if you do not agree. Do not throw your life away simply to defy him! It gains you nothing.”

All he got was a chin raised in stubborn defiance.

“He may be the great commander, but there are rules that even he must follow. He cannot end a person's life so casually particularly when that person is not accused of anything.”

Charles wanted to shake him. As a Templar, there was little he would not do if it stood in the way of the Order. Doubtless, his counterpart was the same way.

“Do not underestimate him,” he cautioned. “My cousin is no fool and will either find something for which to take your life or at the very least destroy your career. You gain nothing from this.”

Doctor White did not seem convinced.

I gain nothing, but my friend may finally be free of his unwanted husband's continued presence in his life. Is that not a worthy cause? And it will not be the first time ugly rumors were spread about me. I survived it then, and I can survive it now.”

“This is not like last time. My cousin's reach is far more extensive than the crown's, and you will find it difficult to find any clients at all. Without clients, how will you survive? Without a means of survival, how do you plan on helping your friends? You would sacrifice all of that out of a misguided notion that Connor would suffer if you helped my cousin now?”

The Omega pursed his lips and laughed bitterly.

“I see you do not understand. My friends and my community were dependent upon Connor and Achilles. One is dead, the other trapped in a most disgusting marriage and wholly at the mercy of Lee.”

Charles flinched.

“I suppose we are all lucky enough that Lee did not chase us from the land when he married Connor, but that matters little. He's destroying us regardless. Without Connor's friendship, without the certainty of his protection and and good will, the community is drifting apart. We came together largely because of him and his invitation to settle on the land that he and Achilles owned. Now that Lee is in charge, it is only a matter of time before our community splinters in fear and resentment.”

Charles felt torn.

“Isn't that a reason to cooperate with my cousin? You could bargain for reassurance for your community, you could gain them the security they seek—”

Doctor White slammed his palm against the wall. Charles fell quite at the unexpected move.

“And do you think anything could induce those people, who owe and love Connor so much...do you think any one of them would trade Connor's freedom for his own security? For his own comfort?”

The good doctor stalked forward, suddenly right in front of Charles's face.

“I am not the only one willing to sacrifice for Connor. Every one of us would. Every one of us loves him. It is a sacrifice that is worth it.”

The Omega doctor swallowed, then.

“You would not understand, being new to the situation and knowing nothing of what has transpired to lead us to this place. You do not know of the evils done by your cousin or how he tormented my friend during their marriage. I do not blame you for seeking to help your kinsman, but you had best cease your efforts. I will not be convinced.”

And Doctor White turned away from Charles, moving to rest upon the bed.

“You are wrong.”

The good doctor stilled mid-step. Charles cleared his throat and began again.

“You are wrong, you know. I am privy to all the details—”

“—then you are as despicable as your cousin for forcing this—”

“—and I do not condone what has been done to your friend.”

Doctor White turned back to him then, eyes flaring in anger.

“How can you suggest this then? Knowing of what you do and agreeing that it's wrong, how can you suggest that I work with your cousin?”

The answer came easier than Charles expected.

“Because I think it best for your friend.”

The Omega doctor looked skeptical. Charles held up a hand to forestall any arguments.

“If Connor is dead, then he is dead. Nothing more can be gained out of his life.”

“He is in torment now, and I can free him of it.”

“But he will be dead. He will have no more opportunity to provide influence and guidance. Can you know that this is truly what he wants?”

Doctor White faltered at that. Charles leapt at the sign of hesitation.

“You were willing to consider that before, even said that you would help my cousins' wife heal so that the Omega could tell you himself what he wanted. What changed from then and now? Why is it no longer an option?”

“It is no longer an option because I doubt that that Alpha would ever allow me to speak truthfully with Connor. It is no longer an option because I don't think Lee would ever let Connor make that kind of decision. He would be cloistered away as soon as he showed even the slightest hint of healing, and Connor would be locked away as his prisoner for life.”

The good doctor stopped then and balled his hands up into fists.

“I want to help my friend, but not if it only lands him in misery. I won't be a party to Lee's sadistic triumph. I won't.”

Charles let out a heavy frustrated breath.

“And if I promise to let you have that opportunity to speak truthfully with Connor? If I guarantee you that option?”

Doctor White stared at him.

“I would question your motives,” he replied bluntly. “You are Lee's cousin and your familial obligations favor Lee. Why should you risk yourself for my sake, for Connor's sake? You know neither of us and have no such bonds.”

“Actually, I do. For you see, in my world, Connor is my beloved and cherished wife, and you are a family friend, trusted to lend your expertise in all things medical.”

Charles could see that Doctor White was finally shocked speechless.

Good.

Maybe he could finally persuade the man.

“Let me tell you about it. And then promise me, if you believe my sincerity, you will lend your services.”

A/N: /cringes from all the mistakes in the last part/ I really shouldn't read these after they've been posted.

As Connor spent a few hours cradling his son, the young mother could not help but think that - without a doubt - his William had to be the most precious little baby in the world. Not only was he adorable, but so calm for an infant. Little Will never fussed. Never wailed loud enough to wake the whole household at night. Connor was certain the servants and the wet nurse, he has yet to meet, must have been baffled by such behavior.

Charles would be so proud. What father wouldn't be to have such a child? The Omega smiled and cooed at the tiny bundle that had his husband's beautiful blue eyes.

It was such a shame that his Alpha could not be here as well. The Commander still had a war to win for the good of this country and her people, even though Connor was certain that he wanted nothing more than to be home with his wife and child. Charles, after all, had wanted this family just as much as his wife.

So Connor would write to his husband, several times already. In his letters, he mostly wrote about their son. Of how beautiful William was, and seemingly always in a state of serenity.

Due to Charles being away from home for so long, Connor had feared their son would not recognize his father. True, little Will was still but a baby, but already he seemed so mature. So, each day before he lay the child to sleep, the Omega would bring him to Charles' office and point to the portrait of his husband hanging on the wall.

"Daddy..." he had explained to William, whose piercing stare never looked away from his mother's face. Then Connor would point to himself and smile, "Mommy."

His baby son never responded, naturally, but he seemed to understand. Such an adorable and gifted little one. Connor would then end each and every letter, professing his love and assured the husband that his family missed him dearly and could not wait to see him again.

Charles never wrote back.

But then again, Connor did not expect him to. His Alpha was too occupied being both the Commander-in-Chief as well as the soon-to-be Grandmaster of the Colonial Templars. Still... Charles had wrote while his wife had been pregnant. He must have been extremely busy with duties. But Connor knew his husband missed them as dearly as they missed him.

"Connor?"

At the mention of his name, instead of 'sir' or 'Mister Lee', the said Omega raised his head in surprise as he finally noticed his visitor.

"Father!" he softly exclaimed, making sure not to raise his voice and startle the dear little in his arms.

Haytham Kenway gave him a gentle smile, that for a moment, seemed a little off to Connor. But he waved it off as the Grandmaster being too exhausted from all the responsibilities weighing heavily upon him. He did look tired by the lines of fatigue about his mouth, and shadows under those gray eyes.

"What a pleasant surprise. I wish you would have told me that you would call this late, I could have asked the cook to prepare a late supper."

His father shook his head, "I did not wish to be an inconvenience."

"Never that, father," Connor spoke with a smile as he carefully climbed up to his feet, easily supporting his son's weight in one arm. Who knew infants could be so light!

The Omega paused and glanced back at the Alpha who had yet step foot into the nursery. "Would you like to hold your grandson?"

Had Connor not been too entranced by the sight of his wonderful little boy's sleepy yawn, he would have notice the flash of anguish upon the Grandmaster's face.

"Perhaps another time," his father answered quickly. "It is rather late, and I wanted to speak with you for a little while before you went to bed."

"Certainly..."

Gently, Connor laid his son down upon the infant bed, and watched in utter adoration as those sleepy blue eyes fell close. A cute little mouth yawned once more, before falling open as the tiny body began to breathe evenly. Little William was already fast asleep.

How precious!

And what a lucky mother he was. Connor had remembered Ellen's stories of how Maria used to cry from dusk until dawn, and that the seamstress wouldn't have a wink of sleep for many nights. The Omega smiled down at his baby son and tenderly kissed him upon the forehead that was just as soft as one of the blankets Connor would swaddle him in.

"Goodnight, my son."

Quietly, he padded over to where his father stood as still as a statue.

"Father, what is wrong?" he finally asked once they were in the hallway. "You're pale, and you look like you have not slept properly in days."

The Alpha did not speak at first, turning away from the nursery and walked towards the hallway in the direction of Charles' office. Connor cocked his head at such odd behavior. He has never seen his father so quiet and somber. Had something horrible happen?

Fear suddenly clutched at his chest like a vice, as the color drained from his face.

"Is... is it Charles?" he whispered in horror and watched that back in front of him stiffen. Oh... oh spirits...no.... no! No! No! He trembled. His eyes were suddenly hot and wet. His vision blurred, as a few tears fell, burning trailed down his face.

"Son!" The Templar Grandmaster whirled around and caught him before he could collapse onto the hard wood floor. Strong arms wrapped around his trembling frame. "No, you are mistaken. Charles is fine, I swear he is. I have only just heard from him not too long ago..."

Oh... oh what a relief! Connor sniffled, as strength returned and he was able to summon the strength to stand steadily upon his own two feed once more. He quickly brought a hand up to rub at his eyes, so that he could make out his father's face once more.

"I am sorry," he whispered apologetically. "I still have the mood swings..."

Haytham shook his head, his hold on Connor relaxing but made no move to pull away. "It's fine, child, and nothing is wrong. I apologize for upsetting you. It was never my intention... I am just tired, you see."

The Omega hurriedly rubbed at his face. "So nothing is wrong then... no one died?"

His father paused for only a moment in fatigue before shaking his head.

"No one."

Thank goodness...

"Then what is that you came to see me about to late at night for?"

The older man opened his mouth to speak but closed it when both father and son heard the soft foot steps approaching them. Then Ronald appeared around the corner, eyes widening in surprise.

"Master Kenway, sir," the elderly man-servant greeted. "I had no idea, you were here."

Connor stared bewilderedly at his Alpha parent. Although he knew about the elder Kenway's stealth skills and entering a space without alerting its occupants; it was strange for him to sneak into a place where he was always welcomed.

"I do apologize for dropping in unannounced, I merely wished to speak to my son."

Ronald looked a bit troubled, and actually appeared as if he were about to protest.

Very strange...

"You are welcome to see me anytime, father," Connor informed him, "but if it is not important, than we can talk tomorrow at breakfast. Ronald, could you show my father to one of the guest rooms?"

"Of course, Mister Lee." The man servant bowed. "Please follow me, Master Kenway."

The Grandmaster looked adamant.

"Son..."

"Father," Connor began using a strict tone he had picked up from the older man himself, "you are exhausted, and I will not have you being dragged around by your horse, riding in the dark. Whatever you came here to discuss, can it not wait until morning?

His father looked angry for a moment but resigned quite quickly, before nodding his head.

"Very well, in the morning."

<3 Doctor White

Also, was not expecting Charles to tell him the truth so quickly. Hopefully, Doctor White will believe him and not think he's a totally nutcase. Come to think of it, the two Doctor Whites of both worlds should be fairly similar, expect FW!Doctor White was married to Ellen.

Possible writer!anon

Just to let you know that I haven't forgotten this. But it keeps growing and growing in my mind so that this bit might just turn out as one part or very long chapter of something much, much bigger.

Charles realized he needs the good doctor as his ally. So he spilled the beans. :) And Doctor White's probably skeptical at first, but since Charles knows things that he really shouldn't... :)

Update tomorrow. So much stuff to do... D:

I love the small details you put in. How Charles wasn't writing back, the sign of tension between Charles and Haytham over Connor's state, the little hints that Connor's memory is there...just buried deeply.

//wibbles//

Am I getting the sense that Haytham wants to force his son back to the real world, and Charles wants to take a more gentle approach? Is that the cause of the tension between the two?

Wow, anon, you nailed it! After Connor loses his sanity, Charles was trying to do everything he could to make Connor happy... even if it meant letting him live in his delusional world for a little while. Whereas Haytham believes the only way Connor can truly be happy is if faces reality - the sooner the better - and moves on.

Won't be able to update tonight, too tired from work. But off tomorrow so hopefully I'll get more writing done.

Finding Connor

Chapter 17

It was surprisingly easier than Charles had expected to convince Doctor White of his sincerity. Perhaps it was the fact that he dropped all pretenses and spoke earnestly of what had brought him to this world. Perhaps the doctor saw something in his manner that convinced him that Charles was not a madman. Whatever it was, the good doctor believed his story and agreed to help.

On one condition.

“If that man continues on as he has done, if he continues to wage this war against Connor and continues to try and destroy my friend, you will do your best to stop him.”

Charles hesitated. The way that was phrased, the look in Doctor White's eyes...

He couldn't be suggesting...

“You want me to kill him?” he whispered in a low tone. If his counterpart's men should overhear...well, Charles's mission would have finished long before he could even attempt it.

“If you must.”

That was...blunt.

“I am surprised. You are not usually so violent, doctor.”

Doctor White simply snorted at that.

“In your word, it seems as if I had no reason to be. Married to a wonderful woman like Ellen, friends with both sides of this secret war going on and therefore removed from the wounds of either side, generally content with life and with good prospects...of course I was not capable of such from where you hail from. I had everything. My friends had everything. The world seemed a good place.”

And Charles found it worrisome. That someone like Doctor White could become so angry and bitter, so full of fury at the man who was Charles in this world.

It, more than anything else, spoke of how strange and different this world was. Of how strange and different his counterpart had turned this world.

“Such a small thing led to this change, I really don't understand it,” he murmured, unable to reconcile the differences.

Releasing his anger on the wrong child. Connor instead of Connor's little friend. What a small and rather insignificant thing. And yet it led to Connor's decay, the dissolution of whatever morals this Charles had left, the destruction of the community that Doctor White and his friends called home, Clipper Binns never having become a Templar or a Binns and forcibly given to James instead of the long courting that the two ought to have had.

And so much was the same. His counterpart's first child still lost, through the shock of George Washington's death rather than the poison that Church had dosed him with, the other Charles being granted the responsibility of leading the continental army, the treachery and death of Church and his son.

What irony, Charles reflected. That events in his own world have transpired such that he loses his beloved wife while his counterpart retains his. That such an undeserving man should be blessed with a chance to keep his wife by him while his had been ripped away...

It was most cruel and unjust.

“Will you?” Doctor White pressed again.

And Charles considered.

“Yes,” he responded. “If he continues this detrimental path, if he continues to bar my way home, then I will stop him.”

The good doctor nodded.

“I trust in your desire to return home then.”

And he held out a hand.

Charles shook it.

----

Five hours later, after counseling Doctor White to continue to pretend as if he were the cousin of Charles Lee, he escorted the man to his counterpart's office. And he found something that completely galled him.

“I am not allowed to be present?” he asked incredulously.

He must have heard wrong. He must have.

“No, you are not,” his counterpart replied offhandedly.

As if Charles had not managed to get him the help he so needed. As if Charles were not instrumental in the revived hope he now had of his wife and child actually living.

Charles took a deep breath and counted to ten. It would not do to punch the other Alpha, no matter how much he wanted to.

“And why,” he managed through gritted teeth, “am I to be barred from this?”

His counterpart had the temerity to look confused. As if there was something to be confused about.

“I had not thought you a part of it. Why would you even wish to be present? Surely it does not involve you.”

Not involve him?

“I seem to recall that I was the one who convinced Doctor White here. And that I suggested him to you in the first place.”

His counterpart waved it off.

“Sure it can be of no interest to you now. He is already here, and Doctor Davies and I will be watching him.”

He turned a glare onto Doctor White who merely ignored him.

“You do know,” Charles began, “that my return to my home likely rests on your wife's recovery. I should say I very much have an interest.”

The other Charles shrugged.

“Then you may learn of it when the doctor here gives you his summary.”

Charles narrowed his eyes. It really was too suspicious, this absolute insistence that he not be anywhere near his wife. Other than those brief glimpses Charles had had while in the green room, he had not seen the other Connor in person. And it looked as if his counterpart was intent on keeping it that way.

Why?

“You are deliberately trying to keep me from even glancing upon your wife.”

His counterpart stiffened. And Charles was not pleased at what that meant.

“Oh for God's sake, man.” He glared at the other Alpha. “I have no desire for you wife. I am not trying to steal him. I merely want to help him because helping him helps me. If you cannot understand that—“

The other Charles grabbed him and, with a sidelong look at the shocked Omega doctor, ordered the man to wait in the hall.

With a nod from Charles, Doctor White obeyed.

Good. He didn't want the good doctor to get hurt.

“Unhand me,” he barked at his counterpart, who had a firm grasp on the lapels of his coat.

“No.”

Charles squirmed but, without hurting the other man, he had no way of those hands to release him.

He gave up after a couple of struggles.

“Fine,” he groused. “What do you want?”

“Do not test me.”

“Test you? I—“

“Yes!” The other Charles hissed. “Do not dare to insult me in front of others, especially not in front of those not yet trustworthy and in need of proper deference.”

Charles bit back his retort. It would not have helped matters.

Seeing his acquiescence, his counterpart released him.

“As for my concerns about you regarding my wife... You have recently lost your own, who you tell me is the same man as the Omega I married.”

“But with a different life,” Charles pointed out.

“Regardless, I cannot help but think that you will be soft to him because of your own memory of your wife. Your feelings and love for your wife are obvious. It would do us no good if you let sentiment cloud your judgment.”

Sentiment cloud his judgment? It was ridiculous coming from a man who guarded his wife so jealously that he did not even let his own double see him.

“I have no intentions on your wife,” Charles growled.

“It is not that of which I fear. I fear instead that you will allow your softness,” he said the word like it was something distasteful in his mouth, “for the Omega who looks like your wife to sway your sympathies.”

Ah. Charles was beginning to understand.

This was about the ongoing war between the Templars and the Assassins of this world.

“You are afraid that I will feel so much pity for him that I would help him revive the Assassin Brotherhood?” Charles whispered disbelievingly.

“Not so much revive as mistakenly give him leeway as he recovers to pose a credible threat again.”

It was...incredible.

“Your wife,” Charles began slowly, “has practically retreated from the world. It is very likely that he will die in bringing your child into this world and, as with most such cases, take the child with him. It is highly unlikely he will have the ability to revive the Assassin Brotherhood in the condition he is in.”

“And even if he was,” Charles pointed out, forestalling the arguments he could see his counterpart itching to make. “Even if he was, you seem to forget that I was in the Inner Circle in my world and next in line for Grandmaster of the American Rite.”

“But it is clear that you care for your Connor.”

“Yes, but he is my Connor. Not yours. They are not the same people. And I do not let sentiment for one blind me to that fact. Your Connor can neither replace mine nor influence me.”

His voice softened.

“Nothing will replace what I had.”

No matter how much he wished that weren't true.

“Alright then. You may come along.”

Why did that not feel like the victory that it was?

“Nothing will replace what I had.”

/cries and hugs Charles/ Poor, poor FW!Charles but it looks like Connor is finally going to see Doctor White and going to be confused as hell to see two of Charles.

Love that Doctor White and FW!Charles have teamed up, and it looks like Moth!Charles' days might be numbered. Oooh can't wait!
