It was only semi-intentional, I'm afraid! Since 90% of this was written really late at night, I was just thinking that Connor is pretty naive for a killing machine. I mean, when he first meets Samuel Adams, he wants to speak with angry guards to tell them he's innocent. So I thought that he might try to get confirmation from someone else, but he wouldn't really question it afterwards, even if the second person is a Templar as well.
To me he's one of those people who finds it hard to believe not everybody is as honest as he is, and wants to believe the best of people. I mean, he goes pretty soft on Johnson and Hickey at first in the game, and only kills them after they've thrown his mercy in his face.
