:) Charles is tired. He wants things to be right again, and he just came back from coronation, being reminded of his loss via Haytham, and confrontation with Haytham. So he's tired and sick of fighting and feeling guilty and everything else. So yep, he's going to be giving himself some hand-jobs from now on. :D It's really the least he could do given that he caused the situation in the first place.
Matthew doesn't care so much about Connor, but he did have incentive for the baby to be healthy (babies always need checkups and stuff). So did he fight for Connor as hard as he could have? Not a chance. But it also wasn't intentional sabotage, more ignoring things he didn't think important and worth his time.
The medical community had some...interesting beliefs...during that time period.
