The Animus parts in question were revealed in a canvas bag. “…I’ve brought all I have.”
“Very well, it’s been a pleasure doing business with you.” She gestured at Max to throw the captive forward as she caught the bag of parts. She eyed the tell-tale flinch of his body as he was caught in surprised arms, confident of the lasting effects of her actions. “This is the part- where you drive away.” She looked at them serenely through heavily made-up lashes. She almost chuckled as the British man half dragged his comrade to the car before getting in himself, staring at her apprehensively the entire time. Sometimes, it was just as fun to do absolutely nothing and watch them squirm.
As the car sped off, she tossed the canvas bag carelessly in her hands. For all the fun she had given up, this had better been worth some sort of promotion. She gestured towards her assistant. “Call Warren. Tell him I’d like to invite him for breakfast.”
…
Shaun had sped away, dry lips a thin line over his teeth as his hands shook with the force he was using to grip the steering wheel. He’d rounded corners nearly on two tires, breaking every speed limit possible before he deemed that they were far enough away, braking heavily as he stopped the car. He smacked his forehead against the cool leather of the steering wheel letting out wheezing breaths that he didn’t realize he had been holding. They had made it- they were alive- he didn’t even know how…
He stared upwards, watching as the morning sun bled colour in to the horizon. They’d both made it out alive… His insides twisted as he remembered that tonight, he had lost two very close friends because of his own mistakes. But he also knew to be thankful that he and Desmond had at least escaped- shouldn’t he be?
He turned to Desmond, who had remained eerily silent throughout the whole ordeal, staring catatonically out the window the entire drive. “Desmond…I…”
“I-I-I’m sorry Shaun, I’m sso so sorry… I can’t…I…I didn’t…” Desmond abruptly burst out in a flurry of tears and gasping apologies, heaving huge sobs that wracked his injured frame as he struggled to breathe. Suddenly, Shaun did not feel so lucky anymore.
