Should I Walk By Again? [2/?]

“You said you were gonna get a rum and diet. You didn’t say anything about giving lap dances,” the other girl interjected, eying Desmond thoroughly. “I’m better at it than she is,” she told him. “Becky’s way out of practice.”

Desmond laughed and gave the brunette’s hip a gentle squeeze.

“I don’t know about that.”

She smiled and started to dig around in her tiny purse. While she was distracted, the other girl slid a piece of paper under Desmond’s hand with a wicked grin. He gave her a look of feigned disapproval before his eyes wandered down to her chest. She slowly smacked her gum, making sure that her tongue spent a lot of time outside her mouth.

Finally the brunette on his lap pulled out a pen and clicked it. She scribbled something on the back of Desmond’s hand in big looping motions, whispered into his ear, and followed her friends to the bar, adding more sway to her hips than was necessary.

Desmond watched her walk away. When she was gone, he licked his thumb and rubbed at the numbers on his hand. Under the table, he crumpled the paper and shoved it into his pocket to throw away later.

“Thanks for the drink,” he said sincerely, tipping it in Shaun’s direction with a nod of gratitude before taking a swig.

“So glad you could join us,” Lucy said caustically.

Desmond glanced around the table and was met with accusing stares.

“What? What did I do?”

“Nothing, Des. It’s fine,” Rebecca said, tipping the last of her beer into her mouth. “Anybody?” She pointed at the table, checking drinks. They shook their heads.

Shaun stood up to let her slide ungracefully out.

“Actually, I have to go to the bathroom,” Lucy said, giving Desmond a prod until he followed suit.

Shaun and Desmond sat in silence. Shaun peeled off a soggy corner of his bottle’s label.

“This is good,” Desmond said finally, tapping the dark glass.

“Yeah,” Shaun agreed. The music washed over them again, a new song.

“Always so bloody loud,” Shaun said.

“It’s a Friday night,” Desmond pointed out. “And I read lips anyway, so we can have a one-sided conversation.” He laughed but kept his eyes on Shaun’s mouth as he took another drink. Shaun looked anywhere but at Desmond.

Lucy and Rebecca returned, chatty and relaxed.

“That took long enough,” Shaun said. He sounded relieved.

“The line for the ladies’ room is crazy,” Rebecca explained as Desmond stood, tapping his knuckles on the table impatiently.

“Going to get another. Anyone want more?”

“We’re fine,” Lucy said, annoyed again.
