Re: Ageless 2/2 PRT I

Malik is silent as he stares at the wounded man. He appears calm, though Ezio can see him fiddling with the edge of one of the linen wrappings before he sits them on top of a pile of books. The Arabic man stills, one hand spread over the top of the wrappings, breathing deeply before his eyes snap once more to meet Ezio's.

"You're a wake...that's surprising." He says slowly, as if knowing Ezio has a limited grasp of his native tongue. His voice is pitched low, rumbling through his smaller frame, shocking the Italian slightly.

Ezio licks his lips, eyes flickering around the room again before they land to rest on Malik. His brow furrows and he feels a flush stain his cheeks. "Novice? How am I a novice?"

Malik scoffs softly, eyes traveling down Ezio's bruised torso before he places his hand on his hip. He tilts his head to one side and looks down his nose. "You charge in here, like a /bull/, without a plan. Then when you are attacked, you simply cut through the attackers without any /skill/." Malik sniffs lightly, but a small flicker of a smile passes over his lips before it disappears.

Ezio glowers lightly, watching as the man walks about his room. (The assassin can only assume such, seeing as this place was the only part of the old fortress that still looked /lived/ in.) Malik balances a pile of books in one hand, shelving a few but keeping most out in a neater pile beside a messy desk. The shuffling of well-worn robes over dusty rugs is slightly soothing to the wounded man, and he finds his lids drooping. His head bobs once before he's jolted awake by a cool hand on his arm.

Malik watches the man's face morph from blissfully content to alert in a matter of nano-seconds; his breath catches in his throat as familiar eyes meet his dead-on. "Why are you still /alive/?"

A pained expression flashes across the Arabic male's face; he turns from the assassin, shoulders hunched. Ezio watches as one hand fiddles with the wrappings resting laying sprawled over the rugs and pallet. Malik looks over his shoulder and glares, dark blue eyes masking over the pain and sadness that was previously bared to the other male. A pink tongue flickers out to wet his lips. "It is my problem to deal with. I do not need a novice like you prying into my life."

Ezio frowns deeply, and moves towards the hunched man. His arm shakes slightly as he claps a hand on Malik's shoulder, jolting the man into action.

Malik whorls around, hand snatching the one resting on his shoulder in a vice grip. His face is contorted into a fierce snarl, and his eyes have gone from dark-blue to an inky midnight black. Ezio is slightly shocked by the rage and anguish reflecting back at him, that he can't help but think that this was how he had looked like when his family was murdered.

"Do not touch me." The man snaps, "Do not act as if you are my friend. You do not know me, and what has happened to me." The grip on Ezio's wrist is starting to falter, but the assassin continues to stare into Malik's eyes instead of tugging his arm away.

"Why are you here?" Malik barks, the words sounding somewhat confusing in the translation.

Ezio refuses to brake eye contact, something which Malik admires. The assassin doesn't falter under his rage, and Malik knows that perhaps he shouldn't be showing such weakness to a possible enemy. He has spent so much time holed up in the fortress that he doesn't know who he can trust anymore.

"I'm here for answers." Ezio replies after a moment, voice sounding too loud in the small room.

Malik purses his mouth, the screaming anger ebbing into a soft whisper of depression. His fingers slide off of Ezio's wrist like liquid, and he rests his hand in his lap. Malik makes a small noise in the back of his throat before the sound of a bell causes them both do jump.

Ezio searches the room for the maker of the sound, and his eyes fall to rest on a series of bells hanging above the door.

Malik stands quickly, moving to the messy desk situated beside the fire place. He silently gathers a handful of throwing knifes, placing them in the folds of his red belt before turning swiftly on his heel. "Where are you going?" Ezio asks, making a move to stand. "What's happening?"

Malik pauses at the doorway, looking over his shoulder at naked assassin. His brows are furrowed in thought and it appears as if he is chewing the inside of his cheek. "Do you think you are well enough to fight?" He asks, shifting the weight off of one leg to the other.

Ezio searches for his breeches, finding them and his robes neatly folded and placed beside a stack of papers that appear to be maps of the area. He shoves them on along with an undershirt, giving Malik an arrogant look. His fingers wrap around the comforting leather of his hidden blades, and when he slides them on, Ezio lets out a small sigh. "I am always well enough to fight." For a moment, Ezio swears he sees Malik rolls his eyes, but the man turns away before he can tell.

--

It's a small group of men who have tripped the wire. Malik huffs lightly, his breath creating a grey mist in the darkening light; he feels his blood pumping through his body, warming his fingers and toes as he and the man wait patiently in the shadows. He wants a /fight/, not something that is like that of a schoolyard scuffle.

"Why are we going up here when the sun is about to set?" One of the men ask, his chattering teeth audible even from where they're perching.

"The group sent up here yesterday haven't reported back to camp. The captain wants us to investigate, Miguel." Another man replies, rubbing his hands together in order to get some warmth into them.

A short man snorts cynically, wrapping his arms around his torso. "The ghosts of this damned place have probably gotten them."

Malik represses a snort, and he can feel the man softly chuckle beside him. "'Ghosts'?" The man whispers in his ear, causing a shiver to run down Malik's spine.

"Silence." He breathes, fingers twitching for one of the knives strapped to his waist.

The assassin beside him tenses as the group of men walk directly below them; Malik can here his breathing slow to almost nothing, and though he has been keeping men like these away for years, doing practically the same thing he’s doing now, with someone to help him, it causes something like a thrill to go through him.

He watches as the other male’s eyes slide over to him, to wait for the signal for them to attack. Malik mentally snorts, ‘Ah, so he will at least listen. Not such a novice after all.’ He gives a minute nod of his head, and they drop.

Ezio feels the rush of falling as he and Malik jump from the rafters. They descend upon the shocked men like two birds of prey, quickly taking care of them without much hassle. He watches Malik fight, awe filled at the site of the one armed man wielding a blade with true skill. The Arabic man is graceful and deadly, something which Ezio admires in a person; he watches as a small pout flits over Malik’s mouth as the last man drops with a thud.

Ezio laughs loudly, shocking both Malik and himself with the action. He blinks, grinning at the man, feeling sort of like his younger self. “You’re upset with the fight, amico mio?” Malik stares at him in confusion before shaking his head.
“I do not understand what you are saying…” Ezio coughs softly, flushing in embarrassment when he realizes that he had spoken in his native Italian.

“My apologizes,” He begins in Arabic, “I had asked if you were disappointed in the fight.” Malik bends down, dislodging his knives from the men’s skulls, a soft frown dipping the corner of his mouth. Ezio watches quietly, liking the slight changes of expression on the man’s face, questions as to how this man was /alive/ still bubbling in this throat.

Malik wipes off a blade and returns it to his belt, turning from the bodies to walk away. Ezio follows like a puppy, bouncing lightly on the balls of his feet while the other man merely stalks down the slowly crumpling halls like a cat. “I was hoping for a larger group of men. That was child’s play.” Malik hums, trailing his one hand over the dusty stone of the walls.

“They were talking about ghosts…care to explain?” The Dai turns as they arrive at the door to his room. His expression is that of mild annoyance, but mostly it’s exasperated amusement. ’He’s happy to have someone to talk to,’ A voice that sounded like Leonardo whispered in the back of Ezio’s mind. ’How long has he been alone like this?’

“Apparently I have made quite a reputation for myself. ’The Ghost of Masyaf’,” They enter into the warm chamber, and Ezio sighs as the warm air licks his face. Malik sits on the edge of a wooden chair, leaving the feather pallet to the still wounded assassin. “The men who enter the fortress are never to be seen again…or so the story goes.”

Ezio sits on the blankets, watching as Malik rests a hand on the messy desk. Dark fingers wind themselves in the linen wrappings, idly playing with the cloth while teeth chew on the inside of his cheek. Ezio licks his lips, hands clenching in his lap. “…how long have you been alive?” He asks softly, waiting to see if the rage and anguish from earlier would rear their ugly heads.

A long sigh followed after a moment; the Dai seemed to deflate in the wooden chair, his hand coming up to cover his face. Through his fingers, dark blue eyes searched for brown-gold. “Centuries.” Came the muffled response. “…I have watched kings rise and fall…my family age and die, people I cared about fall into madness…because of that /damned/ apple.” Malik’s voice hardened, and his shoulders shook. Ezio resisted the urge to comfort the other man, waiting for him to continue.

The Dai sat up, composed yet the light of depression and loneliness still shined through his eyes. He licked his lips, taking a shuddering breath before letting it loose. “You and he…you look very much alike.” Ezio blinked, not knowing who the Dai was speaking about, yet he had a feeling somewhere that he did know. Malik kneeled down beside the other man, his one hand going up to cup the other’s cheek.

His lips brushed Ezio’s ear as he whispered brokenly, “Please, destroy the thing so I may /die/.”

Oh, poor Malik. Being forced to watch everything move on without him, staying in Masyaf to keep it protected, and now presented with Ezio, who looks so much like Altair. I can't even begin to describe how much it made me wibble when I read that last line.

I love the descriptions you put in here, they made me see Masyaf and how Ezio and Malik were reacting to each other (especially when I got the image of an old, battered cat being followed by an old-but-still-a-puppy!dog down Masyaf's hallways. XD)

This is a very Malik sort of thing to do, isn't it? He's trying to be responsible, do some good if he's stuck on this earth past all imaginable though, and really, really sick of having to be alone.

I like that one of Ezio's internal voices sounds like Leonardo, that his best friend is in his heart still. It's also interesting that Ezio is getting a little reverse bleeding effect, or he's picked up more from the codex than he realizes, it adds a touch of magical realism.

This feels... warm and mysterious up until the very end when it plunges into melancholy with a touch of that familiar immortal despair. Very nice.

All your comments made me smile so much! I'm glad that you all loved the descriptions, and that you guys thought that I made Malik in character! Malik is a hard character for me to write, and hearing that you guys really liked the characterization made me very happy! This was a fun fill to write, and I'm glad that I was able to provide a good reading experience.
