(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 05:34 am (UTC)(link)"You talk funny." Desmond said. Funny-chin laughed and Red-hat's face turned red too. Altair had made it over beside him now, so Desmond felt it was safe to let go of the monkey bars.
"He has an accent, Desmond. He likely gets taunted for it often." Altair said, and Desmond felt bad right away. He knew that it felt bad to be teased, and he knew that Altair was telling him to apologize.
"S'rry. Your accent's not bad. 'S kinda cool." Desmond mumbled. Red-hat seemed like he wanted to run away from Desmond still, but Funny-chin got in his way and held out his hand like a grown-up.
"I'm Kadar. That's Leonardo, and our friend Ezio, and my big brother Malik." Funny-chin pointed with his other hand to each person, and Desmond saw the other two appear like magic.
"I'm Desmond." He felt like a grown-up when he shook Kadar's hand and made sure that his face was very serious like Dad's was when he met new people. He shook Leonardo's hand too, but Desmond smiled at him because he still looked a little sad, and Leonardo smiled back a little bit and Desmond felt better.
"Ezio said you were like us and you had someone special too." Kadar was really excited and bounced up and down while he talked. Desmond felt scared again, and even Leonardo's nice smile didn't make him feel better.
Altair knelt down behind him and put his hands on Desmond's shoulders. Desmond breathed and looked up at Ezio and Malik. Ezio looked really friendly, like he'd tell a joke and then share any kind of ice cream at all with Desmond. He looked a lot like Altair.
Malik looked scary at first, but mostly like a busy grown-up who you shouldn't bother unless it's important. He only looked kinda like Altair, except for his arm; he only had one. Desmond wondered where the other one went.
"Dad says imaginary friends aren't real." Desmond said as he looked from Ezio and Malik back to Leonardo and Kadar.
Kadar shook his head. "They're not imaginary. Can't you see them?"
"Dad says I'm too old for imaginary friends."
Desmond watched Leonardo look up at Ezio for help, and Ezio gave Leonardo a smile and rubbed his shoulder. That smile was kinda like Altair's, except bigger. Kadar stomped his foot, and Desmond knew that he was going to start yelling. Dad didn't like it when kids yelled a lot, so he'd take Desmond home early. He had to think fast to stop Kadar.
"Let's go play on the swings!"
Kadar didn't want to at first, but Desmond had already started to run toward them, and Leonardo was following him, so Kadar had to come too. Desmond got the one in the middle and was already swinging his legs back and forth, pitching his body to and fro when Leonardo picked the one on his left, which meant the one on his right was for Kadar.
Kadar talked to Malik while the four of them walked over. Desmond bit his lip. Altair was listening really hard to what Malik said to Kadar, and then to what he said to Ezio. Desmond knew that Altair didn't have any grown-up friends to talk to, and even though he said Desmond was the only friend he needed, Desmond still worried that Altair was lonely. Still, seeing Altair listening to Ezio and Malik talking made him feel a little jealous in his tummy.
Desmond turned away to look at Leonardo, who was wriggling around on his swing trying to copy Desmond and wasn't getting anywhere.
"Like this, Leonardo! You have to lean forward, then lean back. Hold on tight to the chains." Desmond yelled as he swung. Leonardo looked unsure, but started leaning and soon caught the idea.
"I am used to Ezio pushing me." Leonardo said quietly. Desmond could understand that. He hadn’t known how to swing on his own until Altair refused to push him anymore until he learned how to do it by himself. Altair was always telling him to learn to do things on his own. But it was still better when Altair pushed him; he always flew higher.
