My friend and I were talking awhile ago about ACR and how Altaïr's character seemed...inconsistent. Well, for the first memory anyway. Because after memory 2 he is all wise and shit and things.

But the first memory, Altaïr seems like a pretty laid back guy and stuff.
And then we see him in the actual Assassin's Creed and...you know.
He's a total prick.
And I know about Adha, which lead to the lack of emotions probably, but him being an arrogant asshole? and tbh since he failed her it would make more sense that he lost confidence in himself as oppose to a big head. Unless it is just a ~*~mask~*~

So, anons, where when and how did out beloved middle eastern assassin become such an arrogant prick??
there is a promt in here I swear

Canon doesn't elaborate much unfortunately

Apparently Altaïr sneered at Abbas over his (understandable) envy at Altaïr's elevation to Master Assassin (because of the events of the first memory), but otherwise it's presumable that Altaïr's successes over the next two years got to his head. After losing Adha? I can see him coping by deciding to focus his mental self-image on what he feels in control of and he's good at.

Altair was promoted to Master Assassin after he rescued Al Mualim in the first memory, and that, combined with the fact that he was the youngest to be promoted to that rank, was what boasted his ego to insane levels, made him so arrogant and gave him a 'Rawr I'm awesome and you're not' attitude.

But I'd love to see a story detailing the change.

The novel does a somewhat better job of explaining it, though the original game does drop hints. In addition to the achievements Altaïr actually earned, Al Mualim was basically trying to make Altair into his personal attack dog and build up his arrogance, so that when he inevitably got busted back down he'd be that much more desperate to please. The biggest in-game hint you can see is this conversation:

Al Mualim: What better way to make a soldier than to take a broken man and rebuild him? Give him all he’s been denied, with the promise of more.
Altair: It seems a lot of work.
Al Mualim: It is... but what you get in return is loyalty. Knowing what it was they stood to lose, such men would be loathe to betray their savior.
Altair: An interesting theory...
Al Mualim: See? There is still much I can teach you. Everyone deceives - each other, themselves. Learn to pierce the veil, and know that nothing is true.
