Lorenzo hadn't expected this to come out of his hobby. Never expected to fall upon each new journal with such eagerness.

It had started off quite simply - he'd found the journal in his father's library, and when he couldn't tell him what it was, Lorenzo had been determined to figure it out. What use were the languages classes he'd been forced into otherwise?

It had been more difficult than he had anticipated. Between his classes taking up his time and the lack of resources he had for learning what he figured out to be Arabic, every word he figured out was a triumph.

When that triumph had turned to something else, a different sort of joy, he couldn't say.

When he finished the journal - and a journal it had been - he felt a sharp disappointment. He knew he was missing half the story, but this man - and he didn't even know his name - was...

Fascinating.

The man's musings had him feeling a touch of admiration. His words led Lorenzo to guessing the man had been a leader - of what, he couldn't say, but the way the man spoke of power, and the nature of men, Lorenzo couldn't picture the man any other way.

If only he could have met this man. If only he wasn't centuries too late.
