Tonight we are young so let's set the world on fire (1/?)
(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)The second time was in a different village during a food run while Shaun acted (except how he really wasn’t) like a bad tourist.
“A dozen restaurants and not a single bloody hamburger between them.”
“You could take it as a sign.” Desmond offered. Both were carrying bags of food as they walked the dusty roads. “To broaden your taste experience.”
“No, Desmond. If it was a sign broaden my taste experience I would be in Paris. Eating at one of those wine and dine money holes. Instead I’m stuck eating leaf rolled goat every day.”
Desmond shrugged cheerfully, “I kind of like it.” At this time they had reached the intersection that lead back to the city. It was a quiet place, seeing little to no traffic except the few locals that worked away from home. A group of kids played with an old soccer ball at the light, their mothers standing in one of the house’s doorways talking quietly. The air heavy with the smell of desert and some spice he couldn’t identify. Hot and sharp, he could almost taste it: his stomach clenched tightly, hungry again.
Desmond almost dropped the food when Shaun made a strangled yell and more or less fell into him. He jabbed the slighter man roughly with his elbow when he saw what had made the other jump. “It’s just a dog, you girl.”
Muddy brown and skinny like all the dogs he had seen lately, it stood off the side of the road, watching them warily. Desmond crouched slowly, fishing a piece of pita bread out from the bag and holding it out.
“Don’t feed the thing! It could have rabies or something.” Shaun bit out. Standing a good ten feet away and eyeing the both of them as though he suspected they were already infected.
Desmond ignored him. The dog took a step forward, tail gently wagging, ears pulled back. “That a-boy. It’s ok.” He murmured. Grinning when the dog took another cautious step. And that’s when it happened.
It couldn’t have been more than a second, but as the dog lifted its head - it’s eyes a bright, bright red and intelligent – he met the gaze and felt... something. The feeling already light and fleeting; broken harshly when a rock landed on the ground next to him.
“What -“ He jerked around to see two of the women running at him, covered faces and heavy cloth making their approach like angry wraiths come to deliver punishment. Shaun yelled again when one of the women lifted her hand, brandishing another rock. The rock flew by. Desmond stood still in shock as the women flew past him. When he glanced back, the dog was gone, the women had stopped by the corner of the building muttering in low, angry voices. “What the hell was that?” Shaun demanded shrilly. Hands waving back and forth in front of him as though he wasn’t sure what to do with them.
One of the women turned back to them – her glance quick and slightly panicked – grabbed her friends arm and pushed her back the way they came. Shouting at the children who had crowded not far. They dispersed quickly, most vanishing like they had never even been. The doors slamming shut as the last person left the street. The soft noises of the village quieted to nothing leaving the two foreigners alone and confused.
----- I already have to many things to write but I couldn't leave this one be. Short, since it was written while I was waiting in a parking lot on my phone. So please excuse all spelling mishaps and grammar errors and random jumping sentences. Also the lack of Federico/Vieri cause I couldn't really think of anyway to write them in with ifrits/jinn since that is what tickled my brain. Next update in a week? Will definitely be longer.
Also, to note, the jinn is going to based on a mix between the jinn in 1001 nights, Muslim/Arabic beliefs and the little snippet in American Gods where it's a taxi driver. Ok... maybe heavily on the American Gods one. But also on the one sentence (in wiki, but it's sourced so I'm going to have to see if my library can get the book) where it says WWI soldiers stationed in Egypt were warned by locals of ifrits disguised as dogs that would lead them into the desert until they became lost.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-08 02:14 am (UTC)(link)Just really, I'm super happy someone picked up the prompt, and this is a HELL of a fill on top of that. Thank you for writing it! I look forward to the rest!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-09 04:17 am (UTC)(link)and I love you for filling this, with what has the makings to be a promising story. Lack of Federico/Vieri is perfectly fine (I'm a sucker for any pairing that makes sense in the story and know that realistically, not many people ship F/V) ^.^
Wow. I did not know that little snippet about the dogs, and the fact you incorporated it....my mouth is hanging open, and I am most pleased. <3 (will be eagerly checking back in roughly a week)
