Fill: When the Autumn Moon is Bright - Part One [3b/4]
(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)“Leonardo?” he gasped softly. “Is that you?”
Leonardo whimpered and lowered his head, looking down.
Ezio stared at him for a moment, mouth hanging open. “Mio dio, Leonardo. What happened to you?”
Obviously Leonardo could not answer him, so they once again lapsed into silence. Eventually Ezio rose stiffly and started a fire, grabbing a blanket from a nearby table and wrapping it around himself. He sat down on the ground in front of the fireplace and just stared into the flames, deep in thought. Leonardo eventually came over to sit beside him, head drooping and ears low.
Ezio glanced at him out of the corner of his eye, and slowly began to smile. “Come here,” he murmured, tugging on Leonardo’s scruff. Following the gentle pull, Leonardo laid down so that he was stretched out behind the Assassin, giving him something to lean against. Ezio made a huge show of getting comfortable, tugging at the blanket, twisting against Leonardo’s side to find the perfect angle, before finally settling down. Leonardo watched him with mild amusement until he was finished, and then laid his head down on his paws and letting his eyes slip closed. With the fire crackling in the fireplace and Ezio tucked against his side, Leonardo found it all too easy to settle down for a nap.
This time he actually dreamed. There was sunshine and freedom and not a drop of blood in sight.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)Ezio snapped awake, shouting, and managed to elbow Leonardo in the side before he rolled to his feet, hidden blades drawn. Almost immediately after, he curled in on himself, clutching at the wound he must have pulled. Leonardo would have felt concern, except his own side was now smarting as well. The two men groaned and clutched at their sides, almost identical in sound and position.
Eventually Leonardo recovered enough to uncurl, sending Ezio a weak glare. He couldn’t really blame the man, he knew that Ezio tended to react violently when startled, but that didn’t mean that it hadn’t hurt. It seemed to be healing quickly though, already dimming to a dull ache. He wondered if that was something he could blame on his new curse.
It occurred to him that he was once again naked in front of Ezio, but he was too tired and sore to be bothered about it. After last night, he had far too many other concerns. For example, while Ezio seemed to accept him the night before, now in the bright light of day the man might not be so calm about the situation. And even if he was, Leonardo had killed a lot of men last night. There would be an uproar, and surely a hunt would be demanded to find the creature that had done it. Though he knew they hadn’t been followed last night, he couldn’t remember if anyone had seen him the nights before. He could easily be discovered and executed for what he was. And he should be! He was a killer, a monster! He deserved to be stopped after last night at the very least. A murderer should be put down at once. Perhaps he could turn himself in?
He was snapped out of his dark thoughts by a hand on his shoulder. He glanced back to see that Ezio had gotten up, and was looking at him worriedly.
“I’m sorry, Leonardo. I didn’t mean to hurt you. Are you alright?” he asked, gesturing at Leonardo’s side.
Leonardo blinked at him. “It has already faded.”
Ezio seemed to relax slightly. “Good, good. I hate to cause you harm.”
“Cause me – Ezio!” Leonardo shouted, turning to face the other man fully, uncaring of his nudity. “I could have killed you last night! I nearly did!”
“Sorry, what?” It was Ezio’s turn to look confused. He clearly wasn’t fully awake yet, his hair a dishevelled mess, and the rapid change of subject had caught him off guard.
“Yes, I almost killed you! I was seconds away from pouncing and tearing you apart like I did those men! I had thought – !” Leonardo bit his tongue, forcing himself to calm down and stop shouting. After taking a calming breath, he continued. “I had thought I was dreaming. I didn’t think it was real.”
“But you didn’t,” Ezio said slowly. “What changed?”
“When I started...going after you, I thought it might be a nightmare. The worst nightmare I’d ever had. I tried to wake myself up because even in a dream, the thought of losing you would be too much. When I couldn’t wake, I realized it wasn’t a dream at all, and you were truly in danger. I have never been more terrified in my life.”
Ezio jerked slightly at Leonardo’s confession. He searched Leonardo’s face, looking for something that Leonardo hoped he found. He lingered on Leonardo’s eyes, and then to Leonardo’s bafflement he smiled softly. “And you stopped,” Ezio prompted, not saying a word about whatever he had seen.
“I came so close to killing you. It took everything I had to fight the instinct to kill,” Leonardo admitted, trying to impress on Ezio just how much danger he had been in last night. But Ezio was still smiling at him like a dear friend, completely ignoring the threat Leonardo had been to his safety.
“Even afterward, when you carried me to the Dottore?” Ezio pointed out smugly.
“I – ah,” Leonardo paused, considering. Ezio did have a point. Once he had managed to convince his instincts that Ezio was a packmate to be protected, his werewolf form had been much easier to control, and much less dangerous.
Leonardo made one last attempt to make Ezio see reason. “Ezio, don’t you understand? I’m a werewolf!”
But instead of drawing back like Leonardo expected, Ezio only raised a brow at him. “I think I noticed, Leonardo.”
Fed up, Leonardo threw up his hands in frustration and stomped away to get some clothes. But he only made it a few steps before Ezio darted forward and grabbed his wrist. “Leonardo, wait!”
But Leonardo whirled, angrily jerking his hand free. “No, I don’t know what it would take to make you understand! I am a monster, a murderer.”
“And what am I? If being a murderer truly bothers you so much, why have you been willing to call me a friend?” Ezio snapped, finally getting angry himself. “What kind of hypocrite would I be to condemn you for murder? And you did not even do so willingly! You said it yourself, you couldn’t control it!”
Leonardo’s mouth flapped for a moment as he struggled to respond without accidentally insulting Ezio again. “It’s different!” he eventually settled on. “It’s worse if I do not have control! You kill men that need to die! I kill at random, caring not if they are innocent or guilty! I could have hurt an innocent person, I probably already have!”
“You have done no such thing! I’ve checked!” Ezio told him. “The moment the attacks started, I looked into them, worried about just these things, but you have hurt no one that I would not have killed myself. All of your victims have been those stinking guards of Barbarigo, who bully and oppress the people.”
Once again, Leonardo lost steam. “They have been?”
“A guard the first night, and a pair of knights the night after,” Ezio listed. “And you did not harm the Dottore when he came out to tend to me, did you?”
“I...no, I didn’t,” Leonardo agreed slowly. “I knew that you were hurt, and that he could help you. So I stayed hidden.”
“See?” Ezio exclaimed. “See? You are not nearly as monstrous as you claim. I found you quite adorable, if you must know.”
“Like a puppy?” Leonardo asked wryly, a tiny smile pulling at the ends of his lips.
For a second, he could have sworn Ezio was blushing. “Well...yes. Like a very large puppy,” Ezio nodded, scratching at his cheek and looking away from Leonardo’s eyes.
“This, of course, was after you were terrified of me.”
“I wasn’t scared!” Ezio insisted.
“I could smell it,” Leonardo mentioned lightly, enjoying seeing Ezio completely flustered for once instead of his usual calm demeanor. It made something inside of him perk up in interest.
Ezio stared at him. “You couldn’t,” he accused.
“I could,” Leonardo said smugly, enjoying the way Ezio struggled to regain his dignity. The moment stretched as he waited for Ezio to come up with a reply, silence in the room only broken by the birds chirping outside, until it occurred to him that Ezio was no longer focusing on their conversation. Instead his attention seemed to be on Leonardo’s bare chest. Suddenly Leonardo noticed how close they were standing, and that he was still naked. Ezio licked his lips absentmindedly. The moment stretched on a second longer, the tension in the air no longer one of danger or anger, but of something a bit more carnal in nature. Ezio’s hand slowly reached out to touch.
Leonardo jerked back before he could make contact. “I s-should go get dressed,” he stuttered, gesturing towards his room. Ezio blinked at him, still caught in the moment, and then snapped out of it, blushing.
“Yes! You should...do that. I’ll just...get...breakfast!” He turned so quickly he managed to hit Leonardo with his cape and then practically dashed out the still broken back door and into the street. Leonardo remained frozen for a moment more, watching him go, and then shook himself awake. He practically ran to his room, face feeling like it was on fire, and cursing himself the whole way.

They had a quick breakfast, probably stolen, but Leonardo was too occupied with his problems to worry about it that morning. He and Ezio avoided discussing his curse until they were finished eating, chatting about much lighter topics like the state of Monteriggioni and Leonardo’s latest works. When the topic was finally brought up again, Ezio made Leonardo promise not to do anything foolish like turning himself in. He insisted that he could take care of everything, and then left quickly to presumably do just that.
That night, Leonardo staid up alone in his workshop well past moonrise, waiting for the change to happen again, but the full moon must have passed because nothing happened. Exhausted after three nights with very little sleep, Leonardo gave up and finally went to bed.
The next morning there were no rumors of any new gruesome murders, but apparently something new had been brought to light about the old ones. Familiar daggers had been found buried in the corpses after further inspection. The people of Venezia marveled at how vicious the Assassin was becoming, though a few still insisted it was a demon that the Assassin had summoned to do his dirty work. Leonardo rolled his eyes at that rumor and continued on with his day, though he couldn’t help but be touched that Ezio had further tarnished his own reputation to protect Leonardo. Not that there was much left to tarnish.
By the end of the week, Valerio and Felice returned from Milano, thrilled to see him again. He surprised himself by being just as happy to see them as well. They ran into his arms and he held them tight for a moment before ushering them inside to unpack. A tightness in his chest unravelled at their return.
Things once again settled into routine. Leonardo and his assistants worked, Ezio assassinated and occasionally dropped by with Codex Pages or news, and Venezia forgot all about the violent murders at the full moon.
That is, until the next one.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)I love how you dealt with how Leo would come to terms with his new form, with thinking it was just a dream. And Ezio treating him like a lost puppy when he left the Dottore. XD
Re: Fill: When the Autumn Moon is Bright - Part One [4/4]
I love the idiot lordling in the early part - he was fun to dislike in a likeable way ;-)
Ezio so would treat a werewolf like a cuddly puppy (I did the same at the zoo looking at the hyenas and African hunting dogs, causing some people to look at me worriedly).
And the subtler symptoms of Leo's curse like memory loss, nausea and a bad mood right before - PMS much? :-P
I love all the thought you put into this, Anon. It is perfection!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)The scenes from my dream were disjointed, but you managed to flesh them out beautifully. Writer!Anon let me hold you and never let go.
All the Kudos to you :D
