Fill: When the Autumn Moon is Bright - Part Two [3/3]

(Anonymous) 2012-07-11 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone shut up at once, watching in fear as they waited for Leonardo to cut down the man foolish enough to face him unarmed. But Leonardo would never do such a thing, could never. He shouldn’t have worried about his wolf side ever hurting Ezio. Staring down at his friend, bloodied and bruised, but miraculously alive, he knew that it was impossible. His wolf side loved Ezio just as much as he did.

His growling instantly ceased as his eyes locked on Ezio, and he lowered himself down onto his belly. His mouth fell open, tongue lolling out, and his tail started to wag. All of the assembled men gasped as Ezio stepped forward and started rubbing Leonardo behind the ears as if he was a dog, heedless of the powerful jaws just inches away that could bite him in half in seconds.

“Buon cane,” Ezio told him, smiling lightly.

The captain’s jaw dropped open.

“Here,” Ezio called out to the thieves. “Bring Dino.”

The thieves shared incredulous looks, but they apparently trusted Ezio a lot more than they feared Leonardo, because two men went back into the cell and returned with a heavily injured men shaking in the throes of fever. With Ezio directing, the man was seated upon Leonardo’s back like a horse, with another man behind him to keep him from falling off. Bearing in mind the low ceiling, Leonardo rose carefully to his paws, keeping as low as possible so the men wouldn’t hit their heads. Around them both guards and thieves alike were commenting in whispers on Ezio’s ability to command demons and beasts like they were dogs. Leonardo could see Ezio smirking slightly under his hood, and couldn’t help feeling a little amused himself. These men seemed so easily impressed.

Once the men on his back were stabilized, Ezio turned to the guards that were still blocking the way. “Move,” he ordered bluntly. They obeyed without hesitation, even the captain, scrambling to clear a path. Leading the way, Ezio headed up the stairs without looking back, Leonardo following, and the rest of the thieves trailing behind.

When they reached the main level, they encountered the guard from earlier who had soiled himself. He spotted Leonardo and started whimpering again, but Ezio snapped him out of it with a slap to the face.

“Go get the weapons and supplies you removed from these men and I,” he commanded. The guard scrambled to obey, racing up the stairs and returning only a few minutes later with a big bundle of weapons and personal effects. Ezio gestured for a few of the thieves to take them, and the guard looked all too happy to be rid of his burden. Once his arms were once again free, he ran back up the stairs without looking back. “Patetico,” Ezio spat. Leonardo silently agreed.

“Come,” Ezio gestured lightly to the remains of the front door, and then proceeded through it.

They made a strange entourage as they traveled through the streets back to the thieves’ hideout, Ezio leading the whole time. They were silent for the most part, aside from the mutterings of the delirious man on Leonardo’s back. Any patrols they encountered swiftly turned and ran away when they saw the heavily armed group, especially Leonardo.

When they reached the hideout, Leonardo crouched down low, allowing a few men to help the two on his back down. They disappeared inside, calling out for medical attention, waking the thieves inside. The others followed quickly after, throwing scared looks over their shoulders at Leonardo, until it was only he and Ezio left outside. Ezio walked over slowly, reaching out to rub Leonardo behind the ears again.

Leonardo wanted to check Ezio over for the remains of fever and the wounds he could smell were still bleeding, but Ezio’s fingers felt so nice in his fur that he couldn’t bring himself to move just then. And Ezio’s warmth as he pressed against Leonardo’s side was so comforting, he thought he might be able to stay like this for the rest of the night. But eventually Ezio’s hands stilled and slipped away. Leonardo huffed at the loss, before slowly clambering back to his feet. Ezio stared up at him, glanced back at the thieves’ hideout, then back to Leonardo.

“Let’s go home?” he suggested lightly. Ears perking up in happy surprise, Leonardo nodded eagerly, touched that Ezio thought of his workshop as home more than he did the hideout.

A few thieves poked their heads out over the roof to watch Ezio climb weakly up onto Leonardo’s back and the pair loping off into the night. They would report back to Antonio about what had happened. Leonardo briefly wondered what it would mean for Ezio. Would the thieves fear and hate him now? Or would they respect and love him even more now that they thought he could command monsters to do his bidding? Either way, it was something that could be worried about in the morning.

They ended up curled in front of the fireplace again, Leonardo acting as a pillow, though this time Ezio thought to gather a blanket and a set of clothing for the morning. They fell asleep, even though morning couldn’t be more than an hour or so off, and didn’t wake until much later. This time there was no flailing or hitting. They simply rose, Leonardo getting dressed, and then moved into the better light of the front of the workshop to tend to Ezio’s wounds.

As Leonardo was stitching up a gash in Ezio’s lower back, Ezio spoke softly. “Thank you Leonardo. I know you put yourself at great risk to come find us like that. We owe you our lives.”

“I didn’t do it for them,” Leonardo admitted after a brief period of silence, speaking just as quietly. “You were the only one that mattered.”

Though Ezio was already holding perfectly still to make it easier for Leonardo to work, he seemed to stiffen further. “That sounds much unlike your usual attitude. Is not all life sacred to you?”

Leonardo couldn’t resist sighing in frustration. Quickly finishing the stitching, he tied and cut off the remaining thread, setting the needle aside. “Usually it is. But around the full moon...I don’t know. It’s like I become someone else. To be honest, I usually hate it. But it allowed me to save you last night, so I cannot hate my other self as much as I wish.”

“It must be very hard for you,” Ezio offered, still facing forward and away from Leonardo. Leonardo stared down at the planes of Ezio’s bare back, tracing the multitude of scars with his eyes and wishing he could trace them with his fingers as well. He caught them inches from stroking one long scar near Ezio’s neck and jerked his hand back as if burned. No matter how he longed for Ezio, he had no permission to touch in such a way.

“I...suppose,” Leonardo answered, realizing that it had been silent for too long as Ezio waited for a response. “But I’m used to dealing with parts of me that I don’t like. It’s always hard.” He smiled wistfully at Ezio’s bare back.

“You mean your affections for men?” Ezio asked, finally looking over his shoulder.

Leonardo’s head snapped up to meet Ezio’s eyes. He wasn’t surprised that Ezio knew about it, the trial had been rather public after all, but he was a little stunned that his friend had brought his inclinations out into the open like this. It wasn’t something that people mentioned to him, manners dictating that the entire thing be forgotten. Leonardo found himself a little hurt that Ezio would bring up such painful memories so casually. But that sort of had been what he’d been referring to, so he supposed he couldn’t be mad that Ezio spoken it aloud. At least Ezio didn’t seem to realize exactly which man Leonardo had specific affections for.

“Yes,” Leonardo finally said, voice clipped to let Ezio know he wasn’t entirely comfortable with the topic. “But I’ve learned to cope with that, and thus I will learn to cope with this. It will just take some time. These sinful things can eventually be ignored, or pushed aside. Hopefully one day they’ll even vanish completely.” He rose from the bench they were seated on and carried away the dirtied medical supplies to be cleaned. Behind him he thought he heard Ezio make a soft sound, almost pained. He turned back to look, and Ezio was watching him with such a lost look on his face that Leonardo’s heart ached.

“What is it, Ezio?” he asked.

“I...” Ezio just stared at him, at a loss, and eventually closed his mouth and dropped his eyes to the ground, shaking his head. Leonardo wasn’t sure what he was trying to say, but he couldn’t force his friend to speak. Instead he set to cleaning the bandages and rags, feeling strangely dissapointed.

By the time he was finished, Ezio was once again fully dressed. “I have to get my weapons and supplies back from the thieves,” he explained quietly, standing just behind Leonardo at the sink.

“Of course,” Leonardo answered lightly, not looking up. He watched the clean bandages drifting in the basin of the sink, like strangely shaped fish swimming in a pond, dreamlike in their motions. He found himself hoping that this was all a dream. Or a terrible nightmare. Ezio bringing up his sinful ways of the past and then being unable to speak to him certainly sounded like a nightmare.
Ezio stood in silence behind him for a moment more. Leonardo could practically feel Ezio struggling to say something. But then the moment passed and the slightest displacement of air told Leonardo that Ezio had once again slipped silently out of his workshop, and out of his life. Perhaps forever this time.

He waited a few minutes more before he let himself start to cry. But the bandages were already soaked, so what was a little more water.

The next night, the last night of the full moon, Leonardo almost didn’t want to bother sneaking down into the cellar. He barely had the will to move from his bed where he’d been lying all day. Only the threat of what he could do if he was loose in the city and happened upon an innocent person forced him out of bed.

He locked the manacles in place and hooked the key up half-heartedly, moving sluggishly to curl up on the floor. Even through the pain of transformation, he felt numb. Letting the instincts take over his mind felt like a blessing, and he let his consciousness slip into darkness.

When he woke the next morning, the cellar looked completely unchanged. There were no further scuffs on the ground, and the hooks hadn’t been pulled at. His wolf form had apparently been just as listless as him. He weakly removed the manacles and stumbled up and back into his workshop.

His assistants returned the day after, carrying gifts from the village and a breakfast of sweet rolls and fruit. They chattered cheerfully at him as they ate, recounting their adventure in vivid detail, fighting over who was telling it better. Their bright faces were enough to lift Leonardo’s spirits to the point that he would eat, but not much further. They shared worried looks as he refused to paint or work for the rest of the day, asking them to do simple tasks to fill their time, but they did not comment. He overheard them whispering worriedly to each other while they worked, but he couldn’t bring himself to care. Exhausted, despite sleeping all day the day before, he went back to bed.

He didn’t dream.

(Sorry it took so long to post this part, I was on vacation for a week and couldn't write. Also, I’m sorry Ezio isn’t being his usual BAMF self yet. Yet! I promise his moment to shine is coming! Just be patient!)

LEO! AWwwwwwwwww! Poor sad!face Leo.

I love you, Leo, isn't that enough?

*cuddles Leo*

I also love you, Anon, for this wonderful story. I love your writing style, and you have the two boys down perfectly. Would you like my soul, my future firstborn child or the whole entire internets in recompense? :-P

Author!Anon here, thank you for making my night. Characterization is one of my biggest struggles, so to hear that you think it's okay is the best thing you could have possibly said.

And I'm sorry! I hurt Leo because he asked for it! It wasn't supposed to be this way! Stupid fic has a mind of its own!

The Muses want what they want. I'll still snuggle Leo :-)

Well, I think your characterisation is spot-on for the boys, it shows when you put in a lot of work. And for all that I'm not the OP, I want to thank you for the lovely fic!

OP here, Writer!Anon, this is the most beautiful thing to wake up to in the morning and I'm getting the warm fuzzies all over.

As for your characterizations, I really don't think you need to worry because they're not OOC at all. I like that you haven't made Ezio a 24/7 BAMF, because it makes him seem more human. It would be unrealistic otherwise, plus it gives Leonardo a chance to shine as a badass. It makes this anon sad that damsel in distress!Leonardo seems to be a bit cliche in assassin's creed fics, especially since he was a serious BAMF, IRL.

So don't worry at all, beautiful writer!anon, because you are perfection, and are very appreciated here.
