Authornon hopes you are okay with a little subplot sort of thing, OP. I just want to drag Ezio into uncomfortable situations, and yeah...
---
Claudia Auditore stood in the doorway, her arms crossed over her chest.

"We had arranged to meet this morning, and yet I find you lazing about." She rolled her eyes. "You better not have been screwing around with one of my girls last night, Ezio..."

HIs sister could be quite fearsome when it came to the well-being of the courtesans, something Ezio deeply respected her for. With a chuckle, he shook his head and swung his legs over th side of the bed, trying to shake off the awful feeling a night's restless sleep had left him with.

"Not to worry, little sister," He tried to smile, though it came out more like a grimace, "I have not been spending time with the ladies of the Rosa In Fiore as of late."

Claudia kept her arms crossed, but visibly relaxed, if only slightly.

"You are still late for our discussion, Ezio. I may be your sister, but that does not mean you can simply ignore our aliance. My time is just as valuable as your own."

Ezio remained seated, not quite steady enough to get up and bring his sister downstairs once more, but leaned forward and tried to look as apologetic as possible.

"You are right, and I apologize." He patted the spot beside him awkwardly, cursing how quickly his relationship with his sister had soured over the years. "I hear you are having some trouble at the Rosa in Fiore. What might I do to aid you?"

Claudia eyed the bed with a shrewd gaze, but much to Ezio's surprise, she chose to seat herself next to him. Of course, she still seemed to hold hiim at arm's length, but it was progress. With a sigh, Claudia played with a fold in her dress, unsure of where to start. After a few moments of careful contemplation, she began.

"Though you have taken care of Malfatto, my girls are still being terrorized." Her brow furrowed and she cursed under her breath. "Those cazzo! The damned guards have been using more force on them!"

"Force? You mean they...?"

"Si. A few have not survived these assaults."

"When did this start, and why have I not heard of it until now?"

"It has only presented a problem over the past few weeks. In the Centro district, the guards have become more...wild, it seems. They used to just call and taunt the courtesans, but now they try to hurt them! They never used to be so bold."

"Is anyone in particular behind this?" Ezio ran an idle finger over his scar thoughtfully. Though there were many Borgia guards stationed in the Centro district, they had typically given the courtesans space. "Is it a captain? Or has Cesare launched some sort of aggressive campaign against the courtesans of Roma, now?"

Claudia looked at him for a moment, the folds in her dress no longer of interest to her. She looked frustrated, and wary.

"No! I don't know. I have been working with La Volpe in an attempt to gather information, but so far we have not found anything. I am trying to pull all my resources together, but I need something of you, Ezio."

"I will do my best to help you, Claudia. What is it you need from me?"

"Do you remember Fiora, Ezio?"

Ah, yes. Ezio remembered her well. She was a rather clever woman, a former courtesan of the Rosa in Fiore. She was quite skilled in combat, choosing to wield a bladed fan. She had been quiet as of late, and though she currently allied herself with the assassins, she liked her space.

"What of her?"

Claudia shrugged.

"My girls can only do so much, Ezio. Some know how to wield a dagger, or how to poison a dangerous man, but they need to know how to defend themselves. I can only teach them so much, but..."

"But...?"

"I want to arm them against the guards, Ezio. I need discreet weapons. Stillettos are mere splinters to some of these men, Ezio!"

"You mean something much like the hidden blade many of our own use?"

He was starting to see where the conversation was headed, and he didn't know if he wanted to proceed. An odd feeling of shame crept over the assassin, he knew what Claudia wanted.

"In other words, you would like me to contact Leonardo and see if he can come up with something for your girls."

Claudia merely nodded, her eyes fierce.

"I can pay for any services, Ezio. I just need you to get into contact with him. You are the only one who has been able to successfully meet with him as of late."

And unfortunately for Ezio, this was true. Being employed by Cesare meant that Leonardo was watched, and at risk if the Borgia were to discover his meetings with the assassins.

Ezio was caught. Images of the previous night's 'encounter' seemed to flash before his eyes. He did not want to see Leonardo right now, but he had to. Seeing Leonardo meant dealing with the alien feelings that had been clawing at him from within all night, and even now, as he spoke to his sister about important matters. Ezio was resigned, though, and knew he could not abandon his allies over something so trivial.

"Of course, Claudia. I will get into contact with Leonardo as soon as possible to see what can be done."

He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder and nodded, trying to push the cold dread that settled in his bones at the thought of seeing Leonardo so soon afterwards. The thought of the ridiculous boy draped around his friend made his head hurt and teeth grit as though he had been hit with a mace.

"Thank you, Ezio." Claudia stood up and made for the door. "I must return to the Rosa in Fiore for now. Please drop by and see me once you have news..." She paused, looking him up and down for a moment. "...Or just come on by and visit. For mother. I know she would like to see you."

And with that, she left, leaving Ezio to his thoughts.

I'm still writing this, OP. I'd just like to let you know that I'm going to have surgery in a week or so and might not be able to update for a little while. :( I have a good chunk of this written out and will post it asap!

This time, Leonardo showed up.

"Ezio!" Exclaimed the artist, pulling his friend into a warm embrace. Ezio froze up, his arms awkwardly hovering over Leonard's shoulders, the unease that he had felt earlier returning with vigor. Thankfully, Leonardo pulled away before Ezio could think upon it further.

"I apologize immensely for neglecting to show up the other evening," Leonardo continued, "I was having difficulty with one of my apprentices, you see!"

Trouble, indeed. Ezio thought rather...bitterly? Instead, he said nothing and allowed Leonardo to continue.

"He has been with me for so long, and it seems that he grows more wild with each passing year! Why, on the day we were supposed to meet, I returned to my workshop to find the little bastardo rifling through my florins." Though he meant to seem scornful, Ezio detected a trace of fondness in his friend's tone, and felt a stab of disdain go through his system. All he could picture was the smug face of that little brat as Leonardo went on and on about what he had done - leaving out the little 'encounter' Ezio had witnessed, of course - and Ezio found himself growing impatient.

"...At any rate, what can I do for you, Ezio? I can repair that damaged blade you mentioned last time, of course-"

Ezio, who had been rather fixated on a small patch of grass while Leonardo spoke of his apprentice, finally managed to look the artist in the eye. How had he never noticed how lovely they were before? Looking away once more, Ezio wondered why the hell he would even be thinking such things about a man?

"I had one of my own apprentices bring it to the blacksmith on the Tiber. It is repaired."

He felt a mixture of guilt and smug pleasure as disappointment and - dare he say it - hurt flashed over the artist's features before returning to a pleasant smile.

"Ah, I see! Bene, is it working well, then?"

"Yes, though it is not as steadfast as your work."

Leonardo seemed relieved at that comment, or so Ezio wanted to believe.

"Leonardo, I actually have a commission for you."

"Oh? Do tell, Ezio."

"The courtesans from the Rosa in Fiore are experiencing increased aggression from the guards that roam their district," Ezio began, stroking the scar on his lip thoughtfully and deliberately trying to avoid looking at his friend. "Claudia wishes to have them outfitted with a more practical concealed weapon. Some of these guards are armored, making throwing knives impractical."

"I see! Hmm, I do think I could work something out for them...but it will cost you."

He winked and patted the assassin on the shoulder. Ezio found himself involuntarily leaning into the touch for a moment.

"Of course, money is not a problem. What I am most interested in is what you will need of me."

Leonardo rested his chin on his hand thoughtfully, "Well, it would be useful if you could help smuggle one or tow of the Rosa in Fiore's ladies into my workshop..." Ezio cringed internally, remembering the other night with displeasure. "I know it might be risky, but the Borgia family has left me in peace as of late. You could easily provide protection for the girls, and I can get a general idea of what would be practical for them."

"Wouldn't your apprentices be unhappy with such an intrusion?"

Leonardo waved a hand dismissively. "Please, Ezio. They are rarely in my own workshop. They will not be a problem."

"Ah. Bene. I will bring two of Claudia's girls by...tomorrow?"

"Yes, excellent! Now, I better return to my workshop. I don't want to be away for too long. I will see you soon, Ezio!"

Leonardo wrapped an arm around the man and gave him a quick squeeze before departing.

Ezio remained on the bench for a while longer, running his fingers over his shoulder absently.
