The World Was Saved 1/?
(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)The world was saved. And the apocalypse was stopped and the Apple was securely in the hands of the Assassins.
Desmond, however, still had a score to settle with the Templars. Okay, yes it had ultimately been for the best that he got kidnapped considering he got to save the world and all, but that only made him feel slightly better about the several month long hell he’d been through. So when he got the chance to kill Vidic, Desmond jumped at it. It would be very satisfying to take that asshole down a few pegs.
Shaun had quipped that maybe it was Ezio’s love of vengeance still having a slight hold on his mind. Rebecca had giggled good-naturedly and lightly punched Shaun in the arm. Lucy probably would have told them it was time to stop screwing around they had an assassination to plan at that point and the three of them would have sheepishly apologized and gotten to work.
As it stood, they didn’t exactly have that particular facet of their team anymore. So rather than being more serious about their plans, they all decided that Desmond should murder Vidic in broad daylight and start screaming about who he was to the onlookers in honor of Ezio’s first revenge kill and laughed through the night as their plans got more and more ridiculous from there.
When the day actually came, an abnormally chilly April morning, Desmond had a real plan, and one with enough karmic justice to choke a whale, he hoped. It was early enough in the day that the lobby in Abstergo’s building was open, but there weren’t many people yet, and none of the upper level employees would be in their offices until closer to nine. Cautiously, the Assassin made his way through the building. He had an ID card pickpocketed off some mid-level manager or something in a restaurant last night, and Eagle Vision got him through the doors with number pads without too much of a hiccup.
All the way up to That Room, no one paid Desmond any sort of mind. If he were the paranoid sort, he might have assumed this was a trap.
With still another forty minutes to spare, Desmond was back in that hellish room where this nightmare had begun. Those stark white walls, that oppressive heat from the computers powering the Animus, those large windows that let too much sun in… In a weird way, it felt like home.
He switched over to Eagle Vision to make sure there weren’t any security guards milling around in here or cleaners still working, doing his best to ignore the glowing symbols that had been long since washed off the floor. Once he was assured there was no one else in the room, he spared a few glances at the messages around the room. They made his stomach churn. Even now, knowing the whole story, Desmond wasn’t sure he could have gone through with that if his and Clay’s roles had been reversed.
He snapped himself out of his reverie, and started climbing so he could perch on one of the I-beams near the ceiling. “The eagle has landed,” he murmured. He couldn’t help but snicker at himself. “Okay, sorry, that was really lame. But I’ve always wanted to say something like that.”
“This is why no one wants to date you, Des.” He could hear the damn smirk in Rebecca’s voice through his earpiece.
“Really? I thought that was because the last two people I wanted to bang ended up dying.” Morbid as it was, joking about it did kind of make Desmond feel better. Kind of.
“You know what they say: Third time’s the charm!”
“Is Desmond’s sex life really all that important right now? No?” And there was Shaun coming to ruin the fun. As usual.
“Well Shaun, until Vidic gets here, I’m stuck in here reading what are basically a bunch of bloody love notes. That’s bloody in the American sense before you think you’re rubbing off on me.”
“Oh yes, of course. ‘They drained my soul and made it theirs. I drain my body to show you where I saw it.’ How absolutely romantic. I can see why you were so smitten with the man.”
“I dunno Shaun, I think if you whispered that in my ear in your husky ‘fuck me’ voice, my panties would just melt off.”
Desmond made a face. That he could have done without. He loved Shaun and Rebecca to death, both separately and together, but as soon as their torrid romance moved on from flirty emails and hand holding to having eye sex across the room and this sort of thing coming up in conversation… Well, Desmond was a little sick of it considering he was the third wheel and all. “If you two start making out while I’m on this mission, I’m going to start practicing necromancy and have a gross threesome and make you two listen in over the headsets. Capisce?”
“If you manage to learn how to raise the dead and use it for that, then you really don’t deserve the ability at all, now, do you?”
“Thanks for your support Shaun. Any sign of Vidic on the security feed? As awesome as this conversation is--”
“You were the one who started it.”
“No, Rebecca was.”
“Was not!”
“Guys.” Jokes about his non-existent love life aside, damn Desmond missed Lucy. Without her, they were like teenagers whose parents were out of town for a week and they had the house to themselves. They’d gotten better at not having a responsible adult babysitting them over the past few months and were finally taking a hiatus from their R&R to help out the Brotherhood again and being responsible, but they still had a tendency to fuck around more than work.
“Red light cam ‘bout a quarter mile away just showed the target’s car going past. I’m almost done hacking the doors to the Animus Room so we can remotely lock them when Vidic gets through and change the codes so he can’t leave.” Rebecca was the best at this job, Desmond was thoroughly convinced of that fact. He hadn’t thought of what to do if Vidic actually managed to run, and while Shaun was amazing at decryption, the practical side of that escaped him sometimes.
Shaun’s voice filtered through his earpiece next. “I’ll let you know when the security camera in the parking deck picks up his car.” There was a pause, and Desmond knew from experience that Shaun and Rebecca were sharing a look and they both wanted to say something but didn’t know how to phrase it. “And Desmond?” He hummed in response. “Be careful.”
He scraped his teeth against the scar on his bottom lip like he did whenever he didn’t know what the hell he wanted to say back. A whispered, “Thanks,” is what he finally settled on.
The World Was Saved 2/?
(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)Shaun had informed him that Vidic was in the elevator, alone, currently between the second and third floors, and Rebecca had assured him they would be able to keep Vidic in the room without a problem. Desmond himself was still crouched over on the I-beam, his heartbeat heavy, but steady and quiet in his ears. The familiarity of the room was relaxing, strangely. He knew every inch of it. Knew where Vidic could run and hide and try to get a weapon to fight back with. Knew where the security cameras didn’t see – not like that mattered much with Shaun and Rebecca looping old feeds for the guards who might be watching – and where he could hide the body if he wanted.
He’d been through worse.
The door opened and Vidic stepped in, slowly, maybe it was a cautious slowness, or maybe it was just that old bastard’s age finally catching up with him. As the doors closed, Rebecca’s voice broke his silent contemplation, “Doors’re locked. Go get him.”
As Vidic walked under his perch, Desmond stealthily turned, watching his every move. He crossed by the Animus, glancing at his precious machine with a forlorn sigh. Vidic had paused in his slow walk to make that sad little sound, giving Desmond his opening. It really was the most perfect moment. Right before Desmond slammed his body into that old man, Vidic turned, fully acknowledging what was about to come. His steely eyes flicked to the Animus again, like he was trying to say goodbye to an old friend.
Desmond knew this scene. It was right out of the Animus. White room filled with nothing leaning over a Templar who was about to die… Yeah, this was the same old song and dance he’d been over for a few months now.
“So I suppose this is the end of the road for me, Mr. Miles.” And the talking. Desmond definitely remembered the talking. “I have to admit, I didn’t think you had it in you.”
“After everything you’ve done, all the people you’ve killed, it’s an honor to repay the favor.” In his mind’s eye, he could see the Animus glitching, swore he heard that flickering sound. Maybe it was the adrenaline, could have been the Bleeding Effect. “And don’t you even fucking start to spout off some bullshit that it was for the greater good!”
Vidic chuckled. Even pinned to the ground and knowing full well what was going to happen next, the man was insufferably smug and Desmond fucking hated him for it. “I didn’t realize you cared so much about people you never even met. Or maybe you’re trying to blame me for the deaths that I had nothing to do with.”
“Shut up.” Desmond barely recognized his own voice in that moment, it was somewhere between Altair hissing and Ezio’s barely contained hysterical rage and in his own voice it just sounded… Wrong. He took a deep breath to try and steady himself back to the calm he knew he should have in this situation. “Just shut up.”
“Killing me wo-” No. “-n’t change the past an-” Stop. “-d bring them back,” Shut the fuck up. “Mr. Miles.”
“I thought I told you to shut up, Doc.” His voice was calm this time, dangerously so. Vidic opened his mouth to reply, but before he could get another word in, Desmond activated his hidden blade, stabbing the other man in the neck. Blood bubbled in the back of the Templar’s throat, and Desmond automatically closed his eyes with a “Rest in peace, you fuck.”
Rebecca and Shaun stayed mercifully quiet for the next several minutes as Desmond leaned against the Animus, just breathing and letting himself unwind. He still needed to get out of the building, though, so he knew he couldn’t linger for too long.
Right on cue, there was Shaun’s voice helpfully informing him that the hallway down to the elevator was clear and Rebecca had unlocked the door to try and hurry him along. “Yeah, got it. I’ll meet you two back at the rendezvous point.”
They were dead silent on Desmond’s way back to their hideout, to the point where he was wondering if they had just turned off their mics. He’d have to chew them out about that later. The radio silence was nice, but it was too much of a liability in the middle of a mission. When he got back home and they were just as silent, Desmond realized he might have to rethink that assessment and just assume they hadn’t spoken at all instead.
It wasn’t until some outrageously long stretch of time passed and Shaun made an impatient little noise that Desmond realized they were waiting to hear what he was sitting around thinking about. Rather than drag this out any longer, he decided to rip it off like a Band-Aid. “Vidic’s right.” The other two gaped, looking rather understandably startled. “You two can close your mouths, I’m not about to become a Templar or anything. But this one time… He was right. I can’t just keep killing people and assume that I’m fixing anything. Vengeance doesn’t get you anywhere, and it doesn’t make the past hurt less.”
“Very nicely said, Mr. Auditore,” Rebecca quipped, a smirk obvious in her voice. Okay, Desmond had to admit, he walked right into that one. Ezio figured the same exact thing out a few hundred years ago and was a better, less erratic Assassin for it.
But that wasn’t exactly what Desmond was trying to get at. “But I think I know a way that I can fix things…”
