OP LOVES YOU!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Finally some Connor love but Haytham you sure had that coming, though I do hope they can reconcile soon... just so they can beat Washington together; but how will they possibly wrestle the apple away. Washington is at his most dangerous having his most 'treasured' belonging taken from him, and I have no doubt he'll have anyone with Native blood rounded up.

Pitcairn was difficult to write. Wish I knew more about him.

Benjamin Church

Benjamin Church had dreams. Dreams of importance, of being much admired and praised and liked. In his dreams, he would be the top physician to the most important person in the colonies. No! To King George himself! Ladies would crowd around him and beg him to lavish his attentions on them while the men would toast to his genius and success.

Pity he’s stuck here in this backwards location with these troops for company instead. Just who did that bloody commander think he was, ordering Benjamin to mix with these common soldiers? None of them even have a penny to their name or even come of good stock, save perhaps Charles, some of the higher ups and the French. And by God, Haytham has some nerve to demand he share his information with that half-breed Templar Assassin of his.

Bah! Benjamin knew what he was truly destined for, and it wasn’t to play spy with some Mohawk boy. This Connor may have bamboozled the others (Benjamin really thought John, at least, would have had more sense), but the boy wasn’t important enough for him to waste his time on.

And not to mention, the redcoats weren’t so bad. They, at least, accorded Benjamin the respect he truly deserved and, if Benjamin played his cards right, why, he could have the ear of the King himself! Pity those starving soldiers of Washington. Can’t be helped.

Although if Haytham found out he’d been double-dipping, Benjamin would be in danger. Best to destroy the evidence. Speaking of which, where are the men rerouting those supplies? Surely they haven’t gotten lost…

Benjamin gulped as a young half-Mohawk stepped into the doorway.

“Benjamin Church, for your crimes against the Order…run.”

Benjamin Church had many dreams. None of them involved becoming prey.

...yeah...Haytham, that didn't go well.

Sooo not surprised though. You'd think he'd have learned after Connor had THE EXACT SAME REACTION. And Kanen'tó:kon doesn't even know about the rapes yet.

...that being said, does Kanen'tó:kon have the ability to keep Connor safe? Methinks he might have to compromise with Haytham if only because Washington knows where Kanen'tó:kon's people are...and it'd probably be the first place he look for Connor.

...scratch that, will Haytham even allow Connor to get taken away? As screwed up as his priorities are, I can't imagine he'd be pleased to have Connor slip away from his hold a second time...

Thank you thank you thank you thank you again for writing this! This one line sums up Templar Connor perfectly: A cordial, well-mannered gentleman in drawing rooms and war councils, a cyclone of death and destruction (to enemy forces of course) in battle - You must have been joking when you said you were new to writing fics, because this part was amazing and so was your Pitcairn (he really needed more story time in the game).

Oh Church, you thought you were so clever. Can't wait for Haytham's part... oh and more Lee would be awesome (wait am I starting to ship ConnorLee...)

Why thank you! :D I was worried about getting those right (I couldn't get a good feel for them since they barely had any real interaction in the game).

THANK YOU, THANK YOU WRITEANON. YOU HAVE MADE MY DAY.

Re: You Are A Templar

Wow…Church is an utterly unsavory character. I kinda despise him.

Haytham Kenway

There are certain things a man expects when one is Grandmaster of one’s own branch of Templars. Simple things really. Respect. Having one’s orders followed and not questioned. Not having to look after impertinent brats that one’s mentor and friend in England decided to offload into one’s care.

Sadly, Haytham Kenway was feeling very much imposed upon by all three in the form of a smiling half-native Templar Assassin (and of all the epithets, must Reginald gift the child with that one?). It is clear that the child’s mission must be to disrupt all of Haytham’s carefully ordered world for during the short time since he first stepped onto these shores (mayhap returned might be a better world for he was surely born to a nearby tribe) he has managed to somewhat usurp Charles’s devotion, spook Johnson, make Hickey even more insufferable than the man usually is, capture Pitcairn’s attention and assassinate Church (much deserved though it might be).

And while Haytham appreciated the discovery of the traitor and the kill, he would have been much happier had the child sought his permission before he took action. Cheeky child. Really, the boy reminded him of himself during his youth. Intelligent if somewhat impulsive. Thoughtful yet deadly. A most singular puzzle, considering the boy’s heritage and raising.

Which led Haytham to his current predicament. Reginald had requested that he continue the boy’s education in Templar affairs. There is no one better, the man had claimed. And while Haytham agreed with the sentiment, he did not understand exactly why he agreed with the sentiment. What was it about the child that struck him as…familiar?

The child was always following about Haytham, inserting his opinions where they were not wanted and doubting Haytham’s own pronouncements. He had ignored Haytham’s warning not to enter a pub for fear of animosity towards his very obvious native-heritage (Haytham pointedly ignored the fact that the drunkards had apparently decided Haytham was a better target) just the past week and proven himself disgustingly at ease on treetops.

Why, if Haytham didn’t know better, he’d think the boy was related to Ziio (though that couldn’t possibly be true, Ziio had told him she was an only child)! He certainly took after her stubbornness and ability to both infuriate and fascinate Haytham at the same time.

Really, how Reginald could ever expect him to mentor the boy is beyond Haytham…

:D Glad you like. Hope Haytham doesn't disappoint (though I admit I decided to tease at the end...)

I am so loving this story, Troll Hickey is awesome!

OP Haytham

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
/CRIES/ This was so perfect! Anon, you have me hooked... and even though you've touched every character, I'm still craving for more. Like Haytham finding out Connor is his... oh Reginald your desire to control the Kenways might be your undoing (again)

Re: You Are A Templar

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Haytham was fun to write, whee!

Connor Kenway

Revenge is a dish best served cold. And Connor has had a decade to chill and let it age. Ever since Johnson stole him away from his village that night Washington had murdered his people, he has bided his time, waiting for the time to come back to this land and destroy those who destroyed the boy he had been. But his efforts (and Master Reginald, he must never forget Master Reginald) have borne fruit, and Washington lies disgraced, removed from his high authority as commander and his precious plantation sacked and burned.

And Connor…Connor can finally let himself relax in Haytham’s, in his father’s presence. Oh, there are, of course, still the Assassins, diminished in number due to his efforts, and Connor had vowed to support his father’s Templar cause (indeed, that was the condition on which Reginald allowed him to journey across the Atlantic). But the Assassins are scarcely a threat, as weak as they are and will fall soon (though Connor hopes to recruit the master Assassin rather than kill him for Kanen'tó:kon is one of the few members of his beloved village remaining).

No, what Connor will focus on now is ...

“Father, will you allow me to join your for afternoon tea?”

:DD

So happy to read that comment! Unfortunately, I can't say I've read Forsaken and therefore, really can't do Reginald's voice. But I've somewhat closed the look (and might have opened a new one) with Connor's brief epilogue.

Glad you liked! :)

bleh, noticed typo at end. I was trying to be so careful too... ;_;

That last line should be "Father, will you allow me to join you for afternoon tea?"

So before intense plot happens, have an short and awkward chapter in which awkward things happen.

"How are you holding up?" Clipper asks, from the doorway.

Connor is in the study, poring over the accounting books, trying to make sure everything is ready for when he leaves. Two drops of preventative drugs is all it takes for his mind to fog over just enough that the numbers run and blur together.

"Fine, all things considered."

"What are you doing?"

"Accounting."

Clipper enters the room. They are the same age, but Clipper always seems nervous around Connor, in awe of him somehow.

"Sounds boring."

Connor chuckles.

"It is. But it has to be done."

Clipper nods in vague agreement, and goes to one of the bookshelves, inspecting the books.

"Were you here for anything in particular?" Connor asks, after a few awkward minutes in which he can't quite work out how much Lance's barrels cost altogether.

"I was just wandering around. Stefane's going back to Boston tomorrow, his boss is getting impatient. So that leaves us unemployed assassins here, not really knowing what to do until you get back to the Templars and start co-ordinating things."

"You will be glad to hear that I shall be gone by the end of the week, then."

It is meant as a joke, but it comes out somewhat harsher than Connor intended.

"Oh, I.. I didn't mean it like that..." Clipper looks mortified. "I'm sorry, I--"

"No, I should be apologising. I should not be so foul-tempered."

"Well, it's understandable, given everything that's happened," Clipper says, earnestly. "I mean, I don't think I would cope half as well as you if I were in your position..."

Connor gives a more bitter chuckle this time.

"I doubt that."

Connor is not exactly sure why he starts talking again. Because Clipper is there, buzzing with adoration and anxiety, maybe. He needs to get it off his chest.

"I am starting to think it was some kind of punishment," Connor confesses.

Clipper's expression shows that he has no idea what to do or say.

"I... uh... you mean... for killing people?"

Connor rubs his tired eyes and shakes his head.

"No, no. I wish. It would be less ironic if that were the case."

"Ironic?" Clipper asks, and Connor wonders how somebody so naive ever became an assassin.

"Never mind," Connor says, regretting ever having spoken. "It is not important."

Realisation dawns upon Clipper's face, and he turns bright red.

"Oh, you mean... Uh, you're one of those gentlemen? Who, um..." Clipper trails off, apparently about to die from pure mortification.

"...Enjoys the company of other gentlemen?" Connor prompts. "Was that what you were going to say?"

Clipper nods, slowly.

"Please do not mention this to Achilles," Connor says, tiredly. "It is different in my culture. Very, very different."

Clipper nods again, and they sit in awkward silence for a few more minutes.

"So, you, uh... you..." Clipper begins, hesitantly. "With another man? How does that even work?"

Connor scowls and wishes he'd never opened his mouth. He replies through gritted teeth.

"With a lot of patience. Please do not tell Achilles."

"He's going to find out eventually," Clipper replies, in a small voice.

"Then at least wait until I have left."

Connor hopes this is going to be the end of the conversation. No such luck. Clipper still does not leave.

"So, you're in a relationship?"

"Do we have to have this conversation?" Connor groans.

"I'm just trying to show my support. I mean, I don't get it and I think it's downright weird if I'm honest, but you're... If you're happy, then I'm happy, and I think Achilles would be happy, too."

Connor sighs, heavily, and only lies a little bit.

"Yes, I am. However, I promised I would not tell anybody his identity. He is a colonist, and he has no wish to be imprisoned or mocked."

Clipper looks horrified, even angry for a second, and opens his mouth to protest. Connor cuts him off before he can speak.

"I know you would not cause him harm, but I cannot break my promise. I am sorry. But please, please do not tell Achilles. At the very least, wait until the end of the week. Wait until I am gone. Please."

Clipper looks torn for a moment, but agrees eventually.

"Maybe you could talk to him while you're away, and we could meet him after?"

"Maybe," Connor replies, really meaning 'no'. He does not want to think about what would happen if they knew what Haytham actually is to him.

...

He avoids Clipper over the next few days, and spends his time preparing to leave and making sure Achilles will be comfortable in his absence.

He prepares a letter for Achilles, and tucks it into his robes before he saddles his horse. He will send a courier when he stops in Boston overnight. He rolls a few mementos from his village and the homestead into his blanket, and ties it into a makeshift satchel, slinging it over his shoulders. He pulls the hood over his head, and the robes feel unbearably heavy all of a sudden. The weight is a mental one rather than physical.

He double-checks and triple-checks his inventory and his weaponry and he says goodbye to Achilles reluctantly.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Achilles asks, quietly.

"We do not have many other options," he replies, honestly.

"Come home safe," Achilles says.

"I will," Connor lies.

With that, he starts the long ride to New York, waving goodbye to the recruits who are waiting anxiously by the front door. They wave back, and Clipper not-so-subtly walks over to where Achilles is standing. Connor urges the horse into a gallop, though he lets it slow to a trot when he reaches the lumber mill.

He wishes with all his heart he'd never said anything to Clipper. He doubts that he will be able to come back, though he will send Achilles a second message when he has settled away from Davenport, detailing his new location if only so that they can correspond through letters. If everything goes well, he might settle in Lexington, perhaps. Monmouth would be better for seeing the Aquila regularly, and perhaps he could even resume his role as captain. Philadelphia would be a good choice should he decide to make a completely new start.

Almost everything will be all right, he tells himself. Almost everything will be all right.

Connor thinking that Clipper is naive really show how he has changed.
I wonder what Achilles will do, if Clipper really told him what he and Connor had talked about.

And.. and Connor's choice in leaving, possible forever, and that line at the end of this breaks my heart and has forced me to abuse f5

Chapter II

He hit the ground again, the air in his body leaving in an explosive grunt. Desmond groaned and pushed himself to his feet. Ezio grinned and motioned for him to try again.

“You’re enjoying this,” Desmond told him. He threw a haymaker towards Ezio’s face, and was unsurprised when it was blocked. He brought his other fist into Ezio’s solar plexus. Ezio stumbled backwards, trying to draw a breath. Desmond pressed his advantage, and landed a punch on his jaw. He only caught the hint of a grin on Ezio’s face before his feet were taken out from under him.

“Perhaps,” Ezio agreed as Desmond hit the floor. Desmond groaned at his jovial tone and threw an arm over his eyes. “You have improved,” Ezio said, sensing his despair.

“When six hundred years old you reach, beat the master you will?” Desmond asked. He stood up and slid into a fighting stance. Ezio chuckled.

“If you’re lucky,” he replied.

This time Ezio pressed the attack, forcing Desmond to defend himself. His first two jabs missed as Desmond jumped backwards. Desmond grinned as he blocked a punch at his shoulder. He danced to the left as Ezio tried to block him into a corner. Abandoning that tactic, Ezio rushed him and grappled him to the floor. Desmond managed to throw him off. He rolled to his feet, ready for Ezio’s next attack.

Connor grabbed him from behind and pinned his arms to his sides. Desmond fought against his hold, throwing his head back in an attempt to hit his nose. At the same time he attempted to step on his insole. Connor leaned backwards and widened his stance, avoiding his blows. A light touch on his neck made Desmond look up. Ezio grinned as he tapped Connor’s arm.

“Dead,” he said as Connor released Desmond. “Keep an eye out for new opponents. Tunnel vision won’t help you in a fight.”

“Right,” Desmond said. He walked over to the sidelines, grunting in thanks when Connor threw him a towel. He wiped his face, watching the two Masters.
Desmond grabbed a water bottle and leaned against the wall. He could read their body language easily, his mind remembering their mannerisms. Connor took a step backwards from Ezio, something he did when he was nervous or trying to hide something.

“Is he ready?” Connor asked. Ezio shrugged and motioned for Desmond to throw him a bottle of water.

“He can do it,” Ezio said after taking a swig of water. He looked at Desmond and raised an eyebrow. “He’s acceptable.”

“Altair wishes to speak with you. I will tell him,” Connor said. Ezio nodded, his lips tilting up slightly as he walked past Desmond.

“What’s with all the cloak and dagger?” Desmond asked as Ezio’s footsteps faded. “Did something happen?”

“No,” Connor said. “Not yet.”

“Then what’s up?”

“You’ve improved since you started training,” Connor replied, deflecting his question.

“Ezio’s still kicking my ass like he was in March,” Desmond said. “But I’m probably in the best shape of my life.”

“You have passed every test we have put before you,” Connor said.

Desmond raised an eyebrow in confusion. “What tests?”

“Patience,” Connor said. “Your willingness to wait for the time to strike. Strength and cunning, shown when you spar. And tonight we will test the most important in this day and age: stealth.”

“You’re letting me hit the town?” Desmond asked. “Without a grocery list?”

That managed to make Connor smile. “Yes,” he agreed. “And you will have a few advantages as well. The streets will be busy-”

“Why?”

“It is the Fourth,” Connor said. Desmond shrugged sheepishly as he continued. “We will not use our Eagle Vision, and you will have an hour’s head start. At six we will begin hunting you.”

“I’d better get changed then,” Desmond said. He turned and bounded up the stairs. Ezio and Altair’s hushed conversation halted until he was on the second floor. He glanced at the clock before jumping into the shower, rinsing off the worst of his sweat and grime.

Securing a towel around his waist, he jogged to his room and threw on a pair of boxers and jeans. He debated for a moment between two shirts before choosing a dark blue one. Looking around the room for anything else he might need, he grabbed a white jacket that was hanging in his closet. It had been a late birthday gift from his ancestors. When he had expressed his gratitude for it, more had appeared in his closet, supplementing his wardrobe.

Walking back down the stairs, he slipped out the front door. It had been a very mild summer for New Hampshire, and Desmond was glad he had thought to wear a jacket. He started off at a jog towards the town. The differences between the two Davenports, sidewalks instead of muddy roads, gasoline rather than the smell of nature, were nice.

The sidewalk led him down by the bay, into the thick crowds headed towards the piers. Desmond let them drag him along, picking a few pockets as he went. It wasn’t hard, people’s minds on other things. Glancing at a clock by one of the stands, Desmond saw that it was almost seven. He glanced around nonchalantly, his vision flickering into his second sight. Satisfied that none of his ancestors were around, he began making his way to the opposite side of the beach. About halfway across, he spotted someone that he needed. The man was a year or two younger than him, but as Desmond watched, he saw him lift two wallets from passersby. Desmond made his way over and tapped him on the shoulder.

“You’re pretty good,” Desmond said casually. The man’s posture tensed at his words, and Desmond held up his hands. “Look, buddy, I need your help.”

“None of my business,” the man said.

“I’ll give you what I’ve managed to take in exchange for your jacket and pack,” Desmond said. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out one of the wallets he had stolen. Opening it, he pulled out a stack of cash. The man’s interest was palpable as his eyes followed the money.

“I can’t say no to a little cash,” he agreed, sliding off his jacket. He emptied his pack before handing it to Desmond as well. “You get made?”

“Further up the pier,” Desmond lied. He stuffed his jacket into the bag and pulled on the other man’s. “Think I’ll try someplace else for a while,” he said, pressing the cash into the other man’s hand. The man gave him a jaunty wave as he disappeared into the crowd again.
