Re: In Pursuit of Happiness 19

Figured Church would have left an unpleasant 'gift' as he was parting, just like he was sabotaging missives and stealing supplies. Anything to help his 'new' friends, and the death of Charles's wife and Haytham's son would have been pretty disruptive.

Heh, well thanks for the inspiration, anon. Also Connor - once again - has the wrong idea that Haytham is upset with him about what had happened; but more upset that Connor never told him and of course he's mad at himself for both not knowing and not being there to stop it.

Ah, makes sense. Of course this probably prompted Haytham and Charles' blood lust.

A/N: Dammit you plot bunnies, let me sleep! Sorry more rushed mistake-filled writing due to lack of sleep... someone please kill those roosters

After the awkwardly silent carriage ride home to his father's town house, Connor stows himself away in his quarters and thinks of the future. Perhaps he might get married to an Alpha of his father's choosing to start a family with, even that Alpha wouldn't be up high on the social chain as Haytham would have liked. His chest tightens painfully at the thought that he's disappointed the man who has loved and cared for him these past several years.

His father had devoted a lot of time and money into his upbringing. Connor had everything a once-orphan boy could ask for: food, shelter, a family. Haytham had selected the best tutors, and even dedicated his own time to train him in fine tune his senses and the deadly art of combat.

The one thing Connor was certain his father wanted in return of all of that, was the continuation of the Kenway line within the Templars. An ancient Order, he learned from his father, that existed to create a utopia where all men - regardless of race - would stand united. Connor could not deny that he wanted to be part of the organization that Haytham Kenway lead as its Grandmaster; but as a full fledged member, and not simply the spouse of one of its prominent members or their families.

Not that he had anything against the Inner Circle...

William Johnson had always been kind to him. Under Haytham's request and his own interests, he had spent much time over the years to teach Connor the culture of his own people, and made sure the young Mohawk did not forget to speak his own mother tongue. While he was immensely grateful to William and valued him as a friend, the Omega could not see himself as his wife. The man was too much of an uncle towards him.

The same went for John Pitcairn, who had taken him under his wing and taught him about strategy and warfare. Connor admired the Alpha's humility and pacifist nature - despite being a celebrated soldier of the British army - but he simply could not foresee himself with a man older than his father. Also, Master Pitcairn was woefully uninterested in marriage.

Doctor Benjamin Church was already married - unfaithfully so, much to Connor's distaste - but had an Alpha son close to the Omega's age. The boy unfortunately, was too much like his father. Self-centered, greedy, and saw people of a certain class and heritage to be beneath him. Connor had been beyond mortified to overhear the son being excited about how 'wild in bed' a savage might be. It was clear that the Church family only wanted a connection to the Kenway family for the wealth and influence.

Hickey was... well Hickey. Although he and Connor had became close friends. What with them teaming up from time to time, that and Thomas teaching him about the seedy underworld and black markets. However, Haytham did not want his Omega child with the Alpha a certain length of time. Connor was also certain Hickey's days might be numbered for keeping his father in the dark about the younger Kenway vendetta against his former masters.

Then there was Charles Lee, his father's second in command. Perhaps the most complicated Alpha, Connor has ever met. Lee was a lot like Benjamin Church, both were arrogant and have strong contempt for others - people of different class and heritage - they believed to be beneath them. He was also quick to anger and violence; but struggled not to show this side of himself to his mentor, Connor's father.

However... there were parts of Lee's personality that the Omega would admit he found attractive. Charles was passionate, loyal, and devoted. Perhaps Connor was a little too hasty to compare him to Church. Several years ago, it had been Charles who had given him - an orphan native boy - a coin to buy food so he could go without eating from the trash that day. It was Lee who named him 'Connor' over their mutual love of dogs.

It was comforting to know that the Alpha certainly did not hate him. Not when he allowed Connor to play with his precious pack of Pomeranians whenever his father brought him along to the Lee Manor. Charles had even given the Omega permission to come over any time he liked to look after the pups while he had been traveling abroad.

Lee may not have hated Connor, but that didn't mean he liked him. The Alpha always glared or gave him frigid looks and snappish remarks, whenever he tried to voice his opinions, question authority, or manage to have his father's undivided attention. He got jealous too easily, and it was infuriating.

His thoughts were disturbed by a gentle knock at his door, and the Omega sat up in bed, wondering how long he had been lost in thought. From the look outside the window, it had been fairly long. But it's not as if he had anything important to do today. Not with his father hosting a dinner and a meeting for the Inner Circle - which the Omega was not invited to.

It was most likely a servant bringing up his own meal, so he wouldn't go downstairs and disturb Haytham's guests.

Another knock.

"Master Connor?"

"The door is open, Mrs. Potts."

The head maid, an elderly widow who has served under his father longer than Connor has been living there, enters with a smile upon her face. Her hands, the Omega notices, are empty. Perhaps his father was so upset with him, that he was withholding Connor's meals? It was an awful punishment for the former orphan.

"Master Kenway wishes for you to join him and his guests for dinner."

What?

"What?" he echoed his thoughts in sheer disbelief.

She gave him a warm smile, "so please wash up and come down quickly, sir."

Connor blinked and immediately did what he was told.

I love this fill so much! I cannot count how many times I have re-read several parts of it. Your writing and characterization is beautiful!

I wonder, if Haytham is starting to show blue to Connor, what did Connor show at first for Haytham?

Eagerly awaiting the next part!

Hmmm... sometimes I really understand Charles and his hesitation, but I often ask myself whether he's doing good by delaying the whole thing. I mean, Connor will probably be aware that Charles (and Haytham) knew of these atrocities for quite some time (you probably remember sequence 10 and that famous "How long did you sit on this information or am I to believe you discovered it now?" question) and maybe that's something that would serve to only distance him further... In the sense that they had access to such important information and facts but refused to share it with Connor until they deemed right... no idea, man... I'm just trying to guess the drawbacks of delay. Though I certainly understand the hesitance. A tricky matter, indeed.

Other than that - damn I really love this fill. I probably say it all the time, but I can't help it, anon. You deserve the praise and I feel like showering you with love after every update.

Wow, anon! You're on a roll! :D

And so excited for the next part. I bet Connor's going to become a member of the Order. And it's so cute that Connor's thinking about the Inner Circle in that way. I'm sure Charles would be thrilled at his assessment of him.

Also wondering, is Charles starting to fall for Connor yet? It must be sooo interesting from his perspective.

Re: In Pursuit of Happiness 19

(Anonymous) 2013-05-29 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. But since Connor was already doing very poorly at that point (would have been close to Washington's death), it's likely that it really didn't make much of a difference.

Re: In Pursuit of Happiness 19

(Anonymous) 2013-05-29 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe. Got it in one, anon. Information really is a fine balancing act (witness any job), and Charles is definitely using his own insecurity to chicken out. imo, he's not doing any good by delaying. The more he delays, the greater a chance Connor has to fallen deeper in love with Washington, the worse it'll be for Connor, the greater the fallout will be.

The Haytham-Connor scenario was a bit different, imo. That was so very clearly staged that I wanted to headdesk at the moment. Things tend to go a bit better if the person doing the revealing is more candid. Haytham should have taken Connor aside and went, "I've recently received some news that you won't like. I know you think that we were responsible for what happened to your village, but I did some digging and uncovered the real culprit. I think you should know." It prepares Connor for awful news (thus mitigating the impact of the news), and it makes Haytham seem very candid and upfront (even if he may not be). Connor may still be pissed, but he'd be able to recover and remember Haytham in a positive light.

Of course, Charles's saving grace is that this anon hasn't made up her mind what to do with the letter yet. Decisions, decisions, decisions. :D

I might do some one shots from his POV - if I can get him to stop being a perv for 5 minutes ^^; Right now, he is attracted to Connor - a lot of Templar Alphas are - but it's not at the 'love' point yet, as Charles still views Connor's ambition to be a Templar as a potential threat to his own position in the future.

In Pursuit of Happiness 20

In Pursuit of Happiness

Chapter 20 - Hunt

As Connor promised, they located Church’s trail in 5 minutes and followed it to the man’s location within half an hour. And he was not really trying hard to hide. The man had apparently gotten his shirt wet and had strung it on two branches to dry.

The problem was, the man himself was in a cave. A cave guarded by a dozen armed men.

A quick glance with Connor’s eagle vision told him that the men were armed with the ammunition stolen from the continental army.

Connor’s father turned to him irritably.

“I thought you said that the supplies stolen were bandages and medicine?”

Connor shrugged.

“The commander did not mention it, but they may have combined those with one of the earlier shipments of ammunition that went missing.”

It was now Lee’s turn to glance at Connor irritably.

Why, Connor did not know. The Alpha was one of the generals in the army. The stole ammunition should not surprise him.

“Heaven help us if Washington is responsible for all debriefings.”

Connor nearly cursed.

Of all the ludicrous statements, could the Alpha not put his enmity with the commander aside even over something as trivial as this?

“We hardly have the time to discuss the commander’s merits, Lee. I suggest we focus on the task at hand. You may bemoan the commander when Church is recaptured, out of my earshot.”

And why was it that Lee looked strangely put out by that?

“Gentlemen,” his father cut in. “If you would pay attention to the matter at hand.”

Chastised, Connor turned back to the cave.

The guards had changed. Shifts then. In twos. Both armed with rifles.

“Are those actually Templars? Can you not explain to them?”

His father looked rueful as he shook his head.

“They are actually recent deserters. We had meant to—retire—them,” and Connor understood the implications of the word, “but we were busy and they were of little importance. By the time our time freed up, they had disappeared.”

“It appears,” Lee continued, “that they have been hiding here this entire time.”

Deserters.

So, “they would not be missed then.”

“No, they would not.”

That certainly opened up options, though not by much. They were still outnumbered, outgunned, and Connor did not even know if Lee could fight in such conditions. The man was clearly classically trained, but Connor doubted he would know what to do in this jungle-esque setting.

They could try a frontal attack, but the guards would simply retreat back into the cave and shoot from the entrance, where they would have an advantage against any incoming attacks. And it would alert the other guards still in the cave, allowing them to fight back and increasing the chances of casualties.

Again, Connor was fairly certain that his father would be fine, but Lee seemed far more at ease in one-to-one fights or on horseback directing an army.

What they needed was something to draw everyone in the cave out of it. Something to make the cave seem dangerous to stay in. A diversion.

Connor blinked.

“Wait here,” he instructed his two Templar companions before slipping quickly back to the camp.

He had a plan.

----

Charles stared agape as the Assassin slipped off before he could make a single reply.

Wait?

What did he mean by wait?

He looked to Master Kenway, hoping his mentor would have some insight into his son’s strange actions.

All he got was the same questioning stare thrown back at him.

Belatedly, Charles realized that he had spent a year with Connor where this Master Kenway had only spent a couple of weeks.

But, it wasn’t as if he knew his wife’s warrior aspect. There certainly hadn’t been any occasion for Connor to strategize and fight in Charles’s manor.

Except against him, that is.

So it made sense for Charles not to know his wife’s thoughts.

There was really no reason for Charles to have any better idea what was going on than Master Kenway himself.

Really.

It made sense but it was disquieting. How much did Charles really know his wife? Was what he knew even real?

Or was it all a part of his manufactured world? A consequence of locking his wife up?

Charles didn’t know. He wasn’t sure he wanted to know.

Because it implied that the wife he loved wasn’t real. That the tenderness with which Connor rocked their Alpha son and the soft smile on his face as he cradled that tiny baby could never be gotten back.

That Charles’s struggle was futile.

And he couldn’t deal with that. He’d already finally given up his longing for Master Kenway. To be forced to give this up too...

He clenched his fist and kept watch on the cave, waiting for the moment his errant wife would reappear.

----

“The Aquila will shell the cave.”

Charles blinked, uncertain if he heard right. Apparently, Master Kenway was having the same problem.

“You want to bombard the cave,” Master Kenway began.

“With us not 500 feet away,” Charles continued.

“And expect us to be able to retrieve the supplies?” Master Kenway finished.

The Assassin looked at them both.

“I do not see the problem.”

Of course he wouldn’t.

Of all the stupid nonsensical ideas...

“Do you plan to leave this island alive?” Charles asked.

“Of course.”

Not from where Charles was sitting.

Master Kenway pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration.

“Son, this is an extremely dangerous undertaking. The chances of failure are high. Surely there is some—easier—plan?”

Connor looked at them again.

“Unless you can think of a way to actually draw them out of the cave where they cannot simply pick us off one by one, there is no easier way. I have instructed my crew to use the densest cannonballs we have. They will not explode on impact as some of the others might. We need not worry about shrapnel.”

Oh.

That was better.

“They will also not be using any fire-based ammunition. I recognize the dangers of using fire in this setting.”

Master Kenway did not look convinced.

“While that is all very well and good, there is still the problem of aim. Surely you cannot expect me to believe that your ship can guarantee that the cannon hits the cave and not something else. Such as us.”

Connor nodded his head.

“My crew is very experienced in aim. This is not the first time they have provided cover for me in the form of bombardment, and their aim has always been impeccable.”

Strangely enough, that did ease the worries Charles had somewhat, even if it raised new questions about his wife’s hobbies. And sanity.

“Where do you want us then?”

Charles tried not to feel such pleasure from the grateful look Connor shot him.

“I want you two there and there.”

He pointed to two distant trees, on opposite sides of the cave.

“Be ready to fire when the bombardment starts. We want to take advantage of the confusion before they catch what is going on. I will pick off the survivors.”

Master Kenway grabbed Connor’s arm as the Omega made to walk past.

“And if Church is crushed before we can get to him?”

Charles’s wife looked evenly at his father.

“Then we have the supplies, and Church will have died a more painless death than I am sure the two of you will deign him.”

Loathe as Charles was to admit it, it was likely a true statement.

I bet the lot of them are. :D

It wouldn't surprise me if they have a betting pool going on for who can finally get Connor into bed. Carefully kept from Haytham, of course, lest they be relieved of their heads. And kidneys.

OP <3s you anon, I really love how Haytham becomes the guardian instead of Connor. I do wonder when he'll meet the Templars, since Haytham is an Assassin in this one, who will be the Grandmaster of the colonial rite?

Heh, the Templars only now realize that Connor is a dare devil (always love the fact that Putnam calls him 'madder than a march hare') who goes against incredible odds to complete his objectives, much like Altair and Ezio. Hope Connor's plan goes according to plan

Oh Connor ahahahaha, you mad bastard, I just love you. Let's see how his plan unfolds, I'm certainly keeping my fingers crossed for our dearest Omega.

It's also very interesting to observe Charles in his new revelations, however surprising they may be for him. It's just a lot to take in, poor guy...

One-shot: Ceremony 3/3

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
A/N: Finally the last part of this one-shot (oh, whom I kidding), once again full of errors due to lack of sleep and laziness.

After washing up and heading downstairs towards the dinning room, Connor caught the sound of familiar voices in friendly conversation in the air. He could hear his father talking to Lee, and by the older Alpha's tone, didn't sound upset. Which was a relief to the Omega as he quietly stepped inside.

"Ah, son, thank you for joining us," his father greeted from where he sat at the head of the table, surrounded by Templar Alphas.

Many of them he immediately recognized as members of the Inner Circle: Lee, Pitcairn, Johnson, Hickey, and Church - but there was another man he didn't recognize. He was younger than the others, possessing a strong and heavy build, and seemed even broader than Charles in comparison. From the look of his outfit, he must have been part of the military.

As Connor stepped towards the table, the unknown Alpha promptly stood up approached, he stopped a few steps away before holding out his hand towards him.

"A pleasure to make your acquaintance," the man greeted with a pleasant smile, "Captain Nicholas Biddle."

"Connor Kenway," he returned while shaking the other's hand.

Instead of returning to his seat, Biddle walked over to the vacant one Connor was about to claim and pulled it out for the Omega like a perfect gentleman. Amber-brown eyes stared at the captain for a moment, then his Templar ring, his father, and then back to the man before coming to a quick conclusion. Nicholas Biddle was a new member of the Inner Circle, and yet another husband candidate.

After a few seconds, he inclined his head politely to the Biddle and sat down. Just as quickly as he scooted in, conversation - that had seemed to have come to an abrupt halt a moment ago - around the table resumed. The Alpha captain returned to his seat across from Connor, and started making small talk. All the while, golden eyes would glance towards the head of the table, but the Grandmaster refused to meet his gaze.

Although it was a relief to know he hadn't fallen out of his father's graces, but the Omega was certain that he was ready to commit to marriage just yet. There was still so much he wanted to do before having to settle down in the role of a "good wife" and rear children. He wished to be a little more independent, to be given a little more responsibilities. Connor wasn't expecting an Omega like himself to be entrusted with some great role of importance; but he had wished to be apart of their organization, even if it was low level grunt work.

Biddle finally gave up trying to coax him further into conversation, and turned his attention towards the others while the Omega picked at his food. For once, he had no appetite. Everything tasted bland, despite the fact that most of the side dishes were his favorites. When the meal had concluded, and the servants had come in to lean up, his mind was still completely focused on what he could do next to prove his worth.

"Connor."

The boy tensed as his father finally addressed him, expecting to be dismissed.

"Yes, sir?"

"Please, come here."

Obediently, the Omega rose from his seat and did what he was asked. As he approached the head of the table, Haytham stood and faced him, and much to Connor's confusion, so did the others. The air seemed tense. All the friendly camaraderie and light banter than filled the room was gone. Even Thomas Hickey seemed completely serious from where he stood beside William Johnson.

What was going on?

"You may not have been aware of this," Haytham's voice immediately re-captured his attention, "but we have been observing you over the last few months, as you hunted the ones who had wronged you all those years ago."

What? Amber-brown eyes widened in disbelief. They had known? How? Not even Hickey knew the real reason as to why he sought those particular individuals.

"You have shown great conviction, strength, resourcefulness; all noble qualities." Gray eyes bore into amber, as the Alpha leader added, "I am proud of you."

Connor took a deep, shaky breath, as those words rolled through his heart and mind and he felt warmth spread within him. He could not speak, could not think. The Omega barely managed to regain his bearings as his father reached forward and gently clasped his shoulders with both hands.

"I offer you the chance to stand with us as we usher in the dawn of a new world. Will you accept?"

Without having to think twice, the Omega inclined his head.

"I would be honored to, sir."

Haytham's lips twitched almost into a proud smile but it was gone only a few seconds as it appeared.

"Give me your hand."

The boy complied, and as the Alpha's large fingers curled around his own, his father raised a very familiar silver band baring a crimson cross, before him.

"Do you swear to uphold the principles of our order and all that for which we stand?"

Connor nodded.

"I do."

"And never to share our secrets, nor divulge the true nature of our work?"

"I do."

"And to do so from now until death, whatever the cost?"

Amber-brown eyes burned with determination.

"I do."

"Then welcome into our fold, Connor Kenway." The Templar Grandmaster did not bother to hide his proud smile this time as he slid the ring upon Connor's finger. "May the father of understanding, guide you."

A/N: If you read the first part of the First Word series - ant the title of this one-shot - I'm sure this was a complete surprise.

I am so happy for Connor. He must be ecstatic! One of his dreams, check! Now for the second one.

This Biddle sounds absolutely dreamy. Too bad Connor ends up with Charles instead. Can't say how much I'm looking forward to where Charles falls in love with Connor.
