FILL 27/?
(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)"How are you holding up?" Clipper asks, from the doorway.
Connor is in the study, poring over the accounting books, trying to make sure everything is ready for when he leaves. Two drops of preventative drugs is all it takes for his mind to fog over just enough that the numbers run and blur together.
"Fine, all things considered."
"What are you doing?"
"Accounting."
Clipper enters the room. They are the same age, but Clipper always seems nervous around Connor, in awe of him somehow.
"Sounds boring."
Connor chuckles.
"It is. But it has to be done."
Clipper nods in vague agreement, and goes to one of the bookshelves, inspecting the books.
"Were you here for anything in particular?" Connor asks, after a few awkward minutes in which he can't quite work out how much Lance's barrels cost altogether.
"I was just wandering around. Stefane's going back to Boston tomorrow, his boss is getting impatient. So that leaves us unemployed assassins here, not really knowing what to do until you get back to the Templars and start co-ordinating things."
"You will be glad to hear that I shall be gone by the end of the week, then."
It is meant as a joke, but it comes out somewhat harsher than Connor intended.
"Oh, I.. I didn't mean it like that..." Clipper looks mortified. "I'm sorry, I--"
"No, I should be apologising. I should not be so foul-tempered."
"Well, it's understandable, given everything that's happened," Clipper says, earnestly. "I mean, I don't think I would cope half as well as you if I were in your position..."
Connor gives a more bitter chuckle this time.
"I doubt that."
Connor is not exactly sure why he starts talking again. Because Clipper is there, buzzing with adoration and anxiety, maybe. He needs to get it off his chest.
"I am starting to think it was some kind of punishment," Connor confesses.
Clipper's expression shows that he has no idea what to do or say.
"I... uh... you mean... for killing people?"
Connor rubs his tired eyes and shakes his head.
"No, no. I wish. It would be less ironic if that were the case."
"Ironic?" Clipper asks, and Connor wonders how somebody so naive ever became an assassin.
"Never mind," Connor says, regretting ever having spoken. "It is not important."
Realisation dawns upon Clipper's face, and he turns bright red.
"Oh, you mean... Uh, you're one of those gentlemen? Who, um..." Clipper trails off, apparently about to die from pure mortification.
"...Enjoys the company of other gentlemen?" Connor prompts. "Was that what you were going to say?"
Clipper nods, slowly.
"Please do not mention this to Achilles," Connor says, tiredly. "It is different in my culture. Very, very different."
Clipper nods again, and they sit in awkward silence for a few more minutes.
"So, you, uh... you..." Clipper begins, hesitantly. "With another man? How does that even work?"
Connor scowls and wishes he'd never opened his mouth. He replies through gritted teeth.
"With a lot of patience. Please do not tell Achilles."
"He's going to find out eventually," Clipper replies, in a small voice.
"Then at least wait until I have left."
Connor hopes this is going to be the end of the conversation. No such luck. Clipper still does not leave.
"So, you're in a relationship?"
"Do we have to have this conversation?" Connor groans.
"I'm just trying to show my support. I mean, I don't get it and I think it's downright weird if I'm honest, but you're... If you're happy, then I'm happy, and I think Achilles would be happy, too."
Connor sighs, heavily, and only lies a little bit.
"Yes, I am. However, I promised I would not tell anybody his identity. He is a colonist, and he has no wish to be imprisoned or mocked."
Clipper looks horrified, even angry for a second, and opens his mouth to protest. Connor cuts him off before he can speak.
"I know you would not cause him harm, but I cannot break my promise. I am sorry. But please, please do not tell Achilles. At the very least, wait until the end of the week. Wait until I am gone. Please."
Clipper looks torn for a moment, but agrees eventually.
"Maybe you could talk to him while you're away, and we could meet him after?"
"Maybe," Connor replies, really meaning 'no'. He does not want to think about what would happen if they knew what Haytham actually is to him.
...
He avoids Clipper over the next few days, and spends his time preparing to leave and making sure Achilles will be comfortable in his absence.
He prepares a letter for Achilles, and tucks it into his robes before he saddles his horse. He will send a courier when he stops in Boston overnight. He rolls a few mementos from his village and the homestead into his blanket, and ties it into a makeshift satchel, slinging it over his shoulders. He pulls the hood over his head, and the robes feel unbearably heavy all of a sudden. The weight is a mental one rather than physical.
He double-checks and triple-checks his inventory and his weaponry and he says goodbye to Achilles reluctantly.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Achilles asks, quietly.
"We do not have many other options," he replies, honestly.
"Come home safe," Achilles says.
"I will," Connor lies.
With that, he starts the long ride to New York, waving goodbye to the recruits who are waiting anxiously by the front door. They wave back, and Clipper not-so-subtly walks over to where Achilles is standing. Connor urges the horse into a gallop, though he lets it slow to a trot when he reaches the lumber mill.
He wishes with all his heart he'd never said anything to Clipper. He doubts that he will be able to come back, though he will send Achilles a second message when he has settled away from Davenport, detailing his new location if only so that they can correspond through letters. If everything goes well, he might settle in Lexington, perhaps. Monmouth would be better for seeing the Aquila regularly, and perhaps he could even resume his role as captain. Philadelphia would be a good choice should he decide to make a completely new start.
Almost everything will be all right, he tells himself. Almost everything will be all right.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)I wonder what Achilles will do, if Clipper really told him what he and Connor had talked about.
And.. and Connor's choice in leaving, possible forever, and that line at the end of this breaks my heart and has forced me to abuse f5
A!anon, you really know how to put people on edge with this!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 02:10 am (UTC)(link)Oh Connor. You do really need a fresh start, but definitely away from Haytham.
