(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 01:27 am (UTC)(link)The death of his mother had weighed heavily on both him and his father, who turned to drinking and working longer hours not long after that. And so it became Desmond who raised Altair and Ezio; the girls named after boys that had never been born. (His father had been bitter about that it seemed.)
When Desmond had hit eighteen, he had immediately gotten a stable job in the bar business as a bartender and gotten his own savings account away from his father. William was not a kind man, not anymore. He loathed Ezio and Altair as the bane of his existence, and he saw his only son as a large threat. But Desmond didn't have a choice there; if he wasn't a threat, there was a very good chance William would kill his sisters in their sleep. Death did not a stable man make, it seemed.
A year later he had enough funds to buy a house, one with two bathrooms, a large garage and two bedrooms. It wasn't the most magnificent house on the block, but it would serve him well enough until he could afford a larger one. He went to the courts and had the parental rights for Altair and Ezio transferred to him, and then he and the two girls moved out from under William's thumb and into the new house.
Desmond had been nineteen, his sisters ten when that had happened. Now they were both fifteen, and he had his hands full dealing with the first major mark in their lives - their growth as females. He had known that someday they would start bleeding, and their breasts would start aching, they would get snappish and snarly, and had prepared himself in advance. And sure enough, Ezio had hit the mark first. Altair had come down with a cold, and was sound asleep, leaving Desmond to calm his sobbing sister down and explain to her what it meant, the bleeding.
The more Desmond explained, the calmer she became, until the tear-stains were gone and she was looking at the package in his hands with barely-concealed worry. Unsure what his sisters would be comfortable with for their first bleed, Desmond bought pads and told himself they could always make the decision later, once he stopped pulling all his hair out in worry.
Ezio managed to get through her bleeding after that without too much hassle, and Altair flew through it not long after that. Desmond was allowed to sigh and rest for a few precious months before the next calamity started - their bras were getting too small, their breasts were starting to ache. So a trip to the female section of the clothing store was in order. That had been when they were fifteen.
Now, both of his sisters were nineteen, and still living with him. Most of the hormones had balanced out, and he no longer had to hold their hands and explain things to them that would have been reserved for his father or mother instead. Now he had to deal with the men his sisters slept with; Altair had fallen head-over-heels (in silence) for a bronze-skinned, sharp-tongued, one-armed man named Malik, and Ezio was in love with a blond-haired, blue-eyed artist named Leonardo. Both of his girls were happy, and neither man ever tried to cheat or lie, which saved them the hassle of having their arms broken by Desmond.
He had been surprised when they had refused to move out, although they hadn't said no to a larger house. He'd been even more surprised when his sisters had chosen a house smack dab between Malik and Leonardo's houses, meaning the two were able to visit their partners at any hour of the day. Desmond hadn't been pleased at first, but after meeting both men and watching them court his sisters to lovingly, he had to admit it was a nice arrangement. Especially since both Malik and Leo usually stayed the morning for breakfast before heading for work.
This morning he was in the kitchen, balancing the checkbook when Malik stumbled in, yawning and scratching his stump. Malik had impressed him more than Leonardo had, because Altair was a hard girl to win over. She didn't like flowers or sweet nothings like Ezio enjoyed and was conscious about her difference from the rest of her gender. Malik clearly didn't care what she was or wasn't, and had swept her off her feet after two months together. "Good morning, Desmond."
"Morning Malik. Sleep well?"
"Mm, as well as can be expected with a snake curled around my body."
Desmond chuckled. Altair quite literally curled around Malik as he slept, causing Malik to affectionately refer to her as his 'snake'. "I'm afraid I can't help you there. I'm just here for emotional support and because I make amazing pancakes."
That got a laugh out of the man. "Speaking of those pancakes, you think you can whip up some for this morning? Normally I'd stay for eggs and bacon, but I have to be up at the school early. Supposedly one of my essays is problematic to their delicate sensibilities. Che, novices."
Desmond shook his head as he poured the batter into the pan and began to cook the pancakes. The school didn't seem to realize just how stubborn Malik was. If he wanted to write about certain 'taboo' subjects for his essays, he would.
Altair put in an appearance not long after that, followed by Ezio and Leonardo. Desmond served the pancakes, enjoying the quiet glow of the morning and wishing he had more days like this, where he didn't have to rush off to work and the girls to school. As it was, today was looking to be a pretty good day.
At least it was, right up until Ezio broke the silence. "Hey big brother, how come you don't have a girlfriend?"
