FILL 38/?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
This is pretty boring I'm afraid. We're getting to the good stuff in the next part. Which will be up hopefully tomorrow. And also it looks like two endings are definitely happening. And possibly also a super-cracky one.

Haytham has managed to make the best of a bad situation, if he does say so himself. Connor has somehow convinced himself that he's still a neutral party, despite running errands for the Order and sleeping with its leader. Haytham isn't entirely sure how the boy justifies picking up weapons and supplies for Templar agents to himself- maybe he's convinced himself that some of the goods are going to the Brotherhood, or perhaps he's just never looked closely at the crates and barrels? In all honesty, it doesn't matter.

Connor is going to be far more useful as the captain of the Aquila. It won't take a lot of persuasion to have Connor take special guests and extra cargo to certain places, or to have him attack certain forts and certain other ships.

He's not entirely sure how he feels about Connor being away so often for so long. After all, sailing is a dangerous business. He's going to miss Connor far more than a father should, as much as he does not want to admit it.

Still, at least the boy (and everybody outside the inner circle and the elders of the boy's village) is unaware of their true relation, and it's going to stay that way. He can kill Thomas if need be, but Charles is just a little too important for the future of this country and he's becoming increasingly cocky and selfish. He'll need to put him in his place. Or perhaps save him from trouble- Charles does not easily forget his debts.

He stays close to Charles, which is no easy task considering all the moving about he's doing as commander of the Continental army. He leaves a letter explaining his absence from both the townhouse and the headquarters in the bedroom, in case Connor comes back before he does. It's some vague half-truth that he can spin and twist to suit him best when he does meet Connor again.

A handful of short letters do reach him via courier, and they are all Connor telling, quite concisely, of how he is now happily sailing, will be bringing back a gift or two from their exotic destinations, can't wait to see him again, the Brotherhood think their relationship is on hiatus, heart yearns for their reunion to be as soon as possible, Sealed With A Loving Kiss. Haytham stows them in his luggage, in the middle of his heavy notebooks and journals. The really boring ones.

It doesn't take long for what he has been waiting for to finally happen.

They are travelling to Valley Forge, and suddenly most of the guards are dead and an assassin stands in the middle of the road, musket pointed at Charles. A few others stand by the roadside, also pointing various weapons and firearms at them. Mostly at Charles.

"What's the meaning of this?" Haytham snarls, as if he doesn't know.

"We no longer have a truce," the assassin says, bluntly. He's German, by the sound of things.

"What on earth are you talking about?" Haytham tries again. This will be far more memorable if they bring the assault up first.

"You might wish to speak with your second-in-command, then," a different assassin says, this one a man with an Irish lilt to his voice.

"About what?" he presses.

"Tell him what you did to Connor!" the German snarls, jerking his musket threateningly at Charles. Haytham is treated to a sideways glare from the man possibly ten seconds from death. It's hard to keep his amusement at Charles' predicament to himself.

"He already knows," Charles says, hardly breaking a sweat.

"What?"

Their faces, Haytham is sure, are absolutely dumbfounded. He doesn't have the time or luxury to dawdle.

"Tell me something, will you?" he asks. Time to put his mouth to its best use- distraction.

There is confusion in the air, and Haytham dismounts his horse gracefully, and hands the nearest assassin his hat.

"Just how incompetent do you think I am?"

He plucks a knife from the belt of a different assassin, a woman, and fidgets with it.

"Do you really think I don't know the every action of each one of my subordinates? Do you really think I can't control my own men?"

One of them is holding his gun loosely in confusion- the barrel is slightly lowered. He walks in that ones direction, slowly.

"Do you really think six of you could take on Charles and I, and win? Without any fatalities?"

He smirks, and snatches the pistol from the boy's hand- he is perhaps Connor's age. Scrawny. A distance fighter. The boy cries out and his fingers twist painfully. His speech has distracted the others enough that they do not immediately shoot, as they ought to have.

"Everything done by Templars is done by my command," he snarls, and shifts his weight slightly, so he can leap into action immediately. "Everything."

The boys' eyes widen in disgust and anger as the news sinks in. He clubs the boy round the head with his own pistol, and shoots the assassin dropping his hat, hastily aiming at him, in the arm. He springs forward, into a roll, and uses the pistol to break the collarbone of the bearded assassin, and flicks the small knife into the shoulder of the woman he'd just taken it from. She drops her bayonetted rifle, and before it hits the ground, Haytham has it in his hand and slashes her cheek with it, kicking her to the floor, and stomping on her torso hard as he can. There is the satisfying sound of ribs breaking. He aims the weapon at the German, who freezes with his gun still pointing not-quite-at-Charles.

"Drop the weapon," Haytham says. "Or I'll drop you."

He fingers the trigger, meaningfully, and the German thinks a moment, before laying the musket down. Haytham shoots him in the leg, and takes his weapon. He takes his hat from the floor, and remounts his horse. The whole sequence takes about a minute and a half.

"Shall we be off, Charles?" he asks, brightly, spurring his horse into action, without waiting for a reply.

The Assassins will not bother Charles again, and they can't possibly be suicidal enough to try to take him on again for at least another few months- broken bones and bullet wounds take a long time to heal. Actually, he'll be shocked if they try again at all. It isn't every day six well-trained killers-for-hire are trounced by a middle-aged man with a sore back.

He has plenty of time to finish things with Connor.

Boring? Are you kidding?! It's been awhile since you wrote Haytham in action and he's still badass, though I wonder if telling them that he ordered Charles to rape Connor was a good idea... or is it all too late, and he knows that Connor will never doubt him. Poor Connie-bear

Forgot to add, I love how Haytham gives one of the Assassins (Dobby) his hat, kind of like he had at the start of the game. Oh Haytham you are awesome, even if you're an evil bastard... and that last line killed me, "end things with Connor" does that mean end their relationship or end Connor's naive belief that he's neutral and not a Templar? /bites nails/

That last line makes me soooooo nervous.

Finish things with Connor? //wibbles// This anon is really hoping that doesn't mean what she thinks it means.

On the one hand, anon is really surprised Haytham didn't kill all the Assassins. It might actually save him trouble in the long run. Anon hopes that, in one of the endings at least, Haytham comes to regret his actions. //toothy smile//

Boring? BORING?! This was a wonderful and completely not-boring chapter at all, WriterAnon! I adored it, as I have adored all of this fic so far. Haytham was one BAMF in this chapter for sure. :D The way he just casually hands his hat off to a recruit, takes Dobby's knife, and then casually beats off the recruits to shit in under two minutes was just...wow. WOOOOWWWW. Even though he's not exactly young anymore, you do NOT mess with Haytham Kenway!

Update again soon WriterAnon! I <3 you. :3
