Even though he is in the past, this is still technically Sequence 11's Haytham, a man who sought to kill his own son and who didn't really have anything left but his ideals. Being thrusted back in time against his will, forced to work as an Assassin and being in constant conflict with his father, who he used to idolise, did not make things better. In fact, with everything spiralling out of control, I picture him being even more of a cold-hearted killer than he was at the end of the game. I hope I didn't make him too ooc; it is hard to grasp his character with all these portrayal of him out here (hell, even the game and the book's portrayal of him are different).

This chapter is actually an AU version of a scene in Forsaken, where Reginald tells Haytham that his mother's dead. In the book, Haytham - in his early twenties - hardly feels anything but numbness and I don't think he ever grieves for her; he is going to be even worse now. Reginald steers the conversation back to business very quickly in that scene, but their relationship is rather different here. Reginald also never has the chance to deceive and corrupt anyone in this timeline, so his moral compass is still somewhat functioning...

Interesting...I never read the book, so I'm only familiar with the game interpretation of Haytham (and I agree, he's fairly cold to his enemies). It's definitely a very interesting take, and I like it. It just surprised me because I always saw him as being cold to his enemies but civil and agreeable to his allies/not-enemies.

Definitely very fascinating.

Yes, he is civil and agreeable to his allies/not-enemies, and I believe he genuinely cares for some of them at the beginning of the game, but he is kind of... numb to everything towards the end, and as far as I can tell, only protects Charles out of duty in sequence 11. (Of course, this is only the interpretation according to the book, and as I said, even though I don't exactly like Forsaken, it works very well for this story.)

I like this interpretation. It's unique and different from most of the others I've seen. I'm thinking I'm really missing out by not reading the book now.

The book does tell you quite a lot about Haytham, but writing-wise, it is... not good, and there are places where you feel the book's and the game's Haytham are two different characters (his feelings towards the Assassins and the Templars, for example), so be warned.

The Haytham in this story is... kind of a hybrid between the two. I am taking the book into account only when what it describes doesn't contradict what we see in the game.
