Charles would be relying on the bastardy laws. A child born of wedlock has no standing in society. It could not inherit. And if Connor doesn't marry the father of the child, he would be subject to punishment. In Connecticut, it was a public whipping. Not sure about Massachusetts.

Connor could have gotten married to George and claim that George was the father (and that was what they were originally planning), but Charles's rumor pool foiled that idea. Now that a lot of people know that Charles is the real father, common law says that Connor needs to marry Charles to prevent the child from being born into wedlock.

btw, here's the article I used: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_American_bastardy_laws

Yikes, and I thought Charles wedding crashing was bad enough but wow... evil. I'm sure Connor has heard of the rumors if his recruits are incognito and keeping an eye on George. I wonder if and how the Wolf can get avoid the cage the Templars are about to spring on him.

Well, apart of me is evil for wanting Connor to get caged and let George come to the rescue after Charles has his evil ways with him a couple times

Isn't it? Yeah, I'm too addicted to Connor angst except I guess in this one he wouldn't embrace despair if George is still alive and kicking.

Just curious, would this law apply to Connor if he's native? Then again he is half British and his father is backing Charles

...Poor Connor

It's a matter of jurisdiction vs ability to do things.

It's true that the colonies would have no jurisdiction over him if he removed himself from them, but that also effectively means that his influence on Brotherhood, working against the Templars and helping Washington win the war would be severely hampered.

The law is basically a codified and agreed upon set of rules for persons living within a certain society. There may be different laws for different persons depending on situation (the 'one drop' laws comes to mind), but one's ability to live in a certain society is predicated by one's ability to submit oneself to the laws of that society. Unless, of course, one decides to live outside the law.

Connor would not be considered respectable, because he had a child out of wedlock. And that would lock him out of many areas and make life exceedingly difficult for him. It would also put undue hardship on the child. Ziio could get away with it because she wasn't part of that society. She didn't live in Boston and wasn't in their jurisdiction.

Now, ordinarily, Charles would suffer too for the adultery (though not as much as the poor mother), but if he makes an offer for Connor's hand in good faith, especially with approval from Connor's father, then society would likely view Connor as being at fault for not accepting the offer.

...Poor connor indeed.

Now how do I get him out of this mess.... :O

Wow, that is some snare Connor has around him. Oohh I wonder when Charles will publicly ask for Connor's hand in marriage.
