OMG I teared up at this chapter, at the very idea of the future of Connor being treated so horribly while raising a child alone. At least he would still have the Homestead and his people, but I never imagined how difficult it would be for business both and land and sea would suffer. Also <3 George for not giving up! Just not sure how he would fix this, Charles is just so diabolically clever and ruthless when there's something that he wants.

Yupyup! It always struck me how absolutely adamant Haytham was in the game about keeping Charles alive. Haytham seemed like a very practical man, so Charles must be extremely clever and ruthless for Haytham to view him as the "only hope."

But yeah, things would be very difficult for Connor. He knows this, but he's prepared to face it, knowing all the consequences. George isn't prepared to let him face it. :)

It's a reflection of being part of a population that is not accepted. A consequence of things like institutionalized racism, institutionalized sexism and a great many other things.

...like Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, the parole card identifying him as part of a class of undesirables (criminals). Or the Untouchables in India. Being marginalized often results in limited economic potential.

In this case, the authorities (and I think organized religion, too, but I'm not sure) were trying to limit bastards being born, because it was a question of 1) morality but more importantly 2) economics. Inheritances became a problem. And where money is concerned, people are...

So they try to make it as punitive as possible to commit adultery (defined as two people having relations who were not married to each other...so two singles count) and have a child in wedlock.

Interestingly enough, it could all be avoided if colonial New England were matriarchal, instead of patriarchal. If inheritances and family were traced through the female line... :D

Speaking of Haytham, wow, I knew he was be cold, but to allow his son to be punished by society after being nearly executed, raped and impregnated... /shivers/ he really would sacrifice everything for the Order

But yeah, things would be very difficult for Connor. He knows this, but he's prepared to face it, knowing all the consequences. George isn't prepared to let him face it. :)

Awww, they are so sweet together. I totally admire Connor for being so strong, but it's because he has no choice. The moment he breaks down, the Brotherhood will be in danger as well as George.

So now this new wave of rumors has canceled the wedding. I do wonder what George's next move will be. Will he try to get the other Generals to speak against this rumor considering that many of them could be married and are be accused of adultery?

I'm dying to know what Charles' next move will be, he's just so evil in this... I love it.

Well, the point of the trap was so that they'd make things so horrible that Connor would have to give in. The expected value of giving in would be much higher than the expected value of not giving in, so...

But yes, I always did get the sense that, even if Haytham loved Ziio and was rather curious and intrigued by Connor, the Order came before all else for him. He can still mourn those lost opportunities, but he wouldn't do anything differently if it would hurt the Order.
