One-shot: Broken Trust 3/5

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)

After a long night of explanations, he was finally blessed with a few hours of dreamless sleep. There were no nightmares of his mother burning along with the village, his father's cold unfeeling eyes, or his former Alpha's rejection. It had been wonderful, until a rough hand shook him awake, and Connor opened his bleary eyes up at one of Kanen'tó:kon's Assassin recruits.

"It's time," Doctor Jamie Collie stated before leaving him to dress.

He changed quickly into normal clothes, trying to dissociate himself from the "Black Wolf" alias as possible. Instead of the dark tricorn that would not matched his outfit of navy and tans, he dawned a hooded cloak for anonymity. He ought to be able to still blend in with the crowds even with it on. From the look of those dark clouds looming outside his window, it was going to rain later on in the day.

Connor met with the Assassins in the pub downstairs, and they immediately stopped talking when he sat down. The Omega gratefully accepted the coffee and biscuits Stephane Chapheau pushed his way, and ate within the awkward silence. He supposed he couldn't blame them for their distrust. Despite his past with their leader, the truce between them, and his discharge from the Order; he was still a Templar at heart, had had close ties with the members of the Inner Circle.

They especially hated the General who had his men spread word throughout the night of the once Patriot ally who had revealed himself to be a traitor, but not only that... Washington's would-be assassin. The Commander would have to attend and watched the proceedings, and while he was unaware, Hickey would make his move.

The Templars would be able to eliminate two enemies at the same time. Quite a clever plan. But from Charles Lee - the man they had hoped would rise to lead the Continental forces as well as the Order, one day - he had expected nothing less. Had it been any other man besides Kanen'tó:kon, Connor would have stood back and allow it to happen.

"So," he began as they rode to where the public execution would take place, "is it just the three of us?"

"No, our brothers will be in the crowds," Stephane explained. "We can handle Hickey's henchmen if they try to interfere when Kanen is free to go after him."

Thomas...

Connor was able to hold back his nausea at the thought of another dead comrade and friend. But there was no way could have reasoned with them... any of them to stop. Hickey, despite his crude and lecherous behavior, was still a faithful member of the Order... more so after William's death. The Assassins were also completely loyal to their mentor, and Kanen'tó:kon would want Washington protected. He grit his teeth in anger upon thinking of that man, and pushed it back, refusing to let it cloud his senses when they were needed the most.

Due to the crowds, the trio had to proceed on foot, weaving around the masses that were there to witness the execution. With his eagle eyes, he scanned among the civilians and saw some of Hickey's men on lookout. Unfortunately, they stood in pairs and could not be taken out without alerting the rest - Connor pointed out as much to his companions.

"No worries," an old man's voice spoke up behind them. "We are prepared."

Connor whirled to face the speaker, an elderly well-dressed negro man who then promptly raised his cane to direct their attention to the two Templar lackeys standing by an alley. A woman, wearing a white cowl suddenly appeared behind them, and snatched one of their coin purses. They immediately chased after her, abandoning their post.

"Dobby will give them a run for their money," Jamie spoke while cracking a smile. "Then again Fillian is faster..."

The hunter turned his gaze where Doctor Collie was facing, and saw a young man with blonde hair also being chased away with guards, and carrying both their money pouches in his hands.

"Both of you," the old man nodded towards Jamie and Stephane, "fan out, there are bound to be more in the crowds."

"Yes, mentor."

Mentor? Connor blinked in confusion. Wasn't Kanen'tó:kon the one who recruited and trained them? Or had this man been Kanen'tó:kon's mentor?

"Achilles Davenport," the elderly Assassin introduced himself upon seeing his questioning stare. "Come along, Mister Kenway, you will accompany me towards the gallows."

After losing sight of the two recruits within the sea of people, he followed obediently after the old man. He made sure to keep his head down and hood over it, worried that his father or Lee's men were searching for him. They must have discovered that he had escaped by now.

Mister Davenport stopped and raised his head, gesturing him to do the same. Connor saw why and felt himself go cold upon the sight of the prison transport approaching. Once they stopped, Kanen'tó:kon was knocked out of the back of wagon, and quickly hauled up to his feed by the guards. Hickey was also over there, most likely to gloat, before shoving the prisoner forward.

The crowds of people jeered and cried out for the traitor's death, pelting him with rubbish and dirt, making Connor sick to his stomach. How dare they? He wanted to scream. Kanen'tó:kon had risked his life fighting in their war for their freedom.

Someone stepped into the path and delivered a punch to the bound prisoner's stomach, and Kanen'tó:kon fell to his knees. Connor growled catching the person and shoving them back into the crowd as Achilles crouched down at his pupil's side.

"You are not alone, your friends are with you, " the old man assured him in a low voice. Connor felt his breath hitch in his throat when Kanen'tó:kon's brown eyes sought his out. They were almost glad to see him. "Only give a cry when you need us..."

"Forget about me, stop Hickey. He is..." The Assassin was abruptly cut off as hands yanked up back up to his feet.

"Up you go! Don't wanna be late for your goin' away party now." Hickey was so preoccupied with leading the prisoner to his death, that he hadn't noticed the glaring old man. He didn't even notice Connor who stared at him with wide eyes.

"We have to get closer, follow me," Achilles ordered as he began to move at a hurried pace. "Once Kanen gives the signal, one of the recruits will shoot the rope before it breaks his neck."

Connor frowned as they came to a stop. "That is cutting it a little too close. I take it you have a skilled sharpshooter among your ranks?"

The Assassin mentor frowned and shook his head. "We do not, but that is why you are here, Mister Kenway. Use those special eyes of yours to free him before it is too late."

Special eyes... how did Mister Davenport know about them? He doubted his father would ever tell the Order's enemies. Unless his childhood friend had told the Brotherhood. That made more sense. Though Connor could not help feel a little betrayed that Kanen'tó:kon had revealed information about him to his comrades while he kept the other a secret from the Templars.

He took a deep breath and exhaled with a shudder upon seeing Charles Lee waiting at the gallows. He should not have been surprised that his former Alpha would be playing the role of executioner. Connor's heart thumped almost painfully in his chest when he saw the look of anger, jealousy, and betrayal upon the man's face the last time they each other.

"Do not deny that you are in love with this friend of yours, that you valued him over the Order and over our marriage!"

The Omega wondered, if he had told and trusted his would-be-husband earlier on about his friend being an Assassin... would things have come to this pass? Would Charles have supported him then and convinced the Grandmaster of a truce with the Brotherhood to have avoided further bloodshed, even if it meant allowing George Washington to live?

Connor glanced over his shoulder, at a distance he could spot the Commander. It disgusted him how he had attended without trying to put a stop to this execution. Didn't Washington himself say that Kanen'tó:kon had been a friend of his? What kind of friend allows the other to die?

"Brothers. Sisters. Fellow Patriots," Charles' voice addressed the masses. "Several days ago we learned of a scheme so vile, so dastardly - that even repeating it now, disturbs my being. The man before you plotted to murder our much beloved Commander."

The General gestured to the bound and stony faced prisoner, and then there were gasps followed by an angry thunderous response from the crowds. Connor saw Charles' piercing blue eyes sweep through the audience, and he had a certain feeling that the Alpha was looking for him. He shifted a little, hiding behind a tall Alpha in front of him.

"Indeed," roared Charles as he carried on. "What darkness or madness moved him, none can say. And he himself offers no defense. Shows no remorse. And though we have begged and pleaded with him to share what he knows, he maintains a deadly silence. If the man will not explain himself, if he will not confess and atone, what other option do we have, but this?"

A burlap bag covers the prisoner's head, and Connor prays to the Spirits, that the Assassin sniper will hit his mark.

"He sought to send us into the arms of the enemy. And thus, we are compelled by justice to send him from this world. May God have mercy on your soul."

Connor unsheathed his only dagger, watching as General Lee steps over to the side, pulling the lever that releases the platform's trap door beneath Kanen'tó:kon's feet. The Assassin cried out to his comrades.

A gunshot resounded in the air, startling the audience. Achilles and Connor, who had expected the noise, were still, waiting for the condemned prisoner's body to fall into the trap door. But the Omega paled as his eagle eyes stared at the unraveling yet unbroken rope

Without realizing the risk that he would be discovered, he through his dagger and sent it sailing into the air. He did not breathe, did no blink, or twitch muscle until the rope was severed and his weapon embedded itself into the platform post. Kanen'tó:kon's struggling body fell through the trap door, and Achilles was quickly on the move to locate him underneath the platform.

Blue eyes immediately singled him out among the panic as the people scattered in fear. Charles Lee was glaring accusingly back at him. He made a move in the Omega's direction until Haytham himself jumped up onto the platform and began to drag him off, and out of danger.

Connor ripped his gaze away, unable to watch them go, as he turned around and fled.

A/N: Since Clipper joined the Templars, I inserted Fillan McCarthy in his place since he is an Assassin in the multiplayer.

I know I keep saying this but OMG. :O Connor just sacrificed Hickey for Kanen. :O

Haytham and Charles are going to kill him. It makes me all the more curious how he gains their trust back... //on edge of seat//

Kudos for a truly lovely installment! :)
