FILL 5/?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
OK, so my house is going to be totally upside down from tuesday to thursday, possibly as early as monday. So no updates then, sorry! And just when this fill is finally getting somewhere, too...

I applied for an AO3 invite, so in the new year a superspecialawesome edited/revised version of this should go up there. Also, schadenfreude is a German word with no exact English translation. It describes a feeling of smug happiness at the misfortune or sadness of others, in a way that is different to sadism.

Connor looks absolutely miserable. He seems to have given up on being polite, and in some ways Haytham can't blame him. Usually his men would be far kinder, but for now they have very specific roles to play. Lee and Hickey are vitirolic bullies practically joined at the hip. Johnson is the cultural equivilent of a mad scientist. Pitcairn is the aloof, uncaring soldier, while Church is... well, Church. Greedy and untrustworthy.

Connor eyes his cutlery, probably calculating whether stabbing Johnson is worth the wrath he will incur for doing so. Or perhaps he's wondering if anybody will notice if he shoves a knife or a fork in his boot. Haytham suppresses a chuckle- schadenfreude is most certainly his guilty pleasure- and picks at his food. He's never had much of an appetite for French cuisine.

...

Haytham isn't very surprised to find Connor still in his rooms the next morning. Connor may be many things, but he is not suicidal. In his current state, he cannot afford to turn down the offer of a warm bed and nourishment, even if it is in undesirable circumstances. He can hear sounds of movement in the room, sleepy footsteps shuffling nearer and nearer.

"Good morning," he beams, as Connor opens the door a good five minutes after Haytham began knocking. The assassin has evidently just dragged himself out of bed. Well, it is rather early.

"It's half past four in the morning," Connor says, flatly. "It's still dark outside. I don't think it's morning just yet."

"Are you tired? Perhaps you ought to have gone to bed earlier."

"Why are you here?" Connor rubs his eyes, stifling a yawn. He's seething at this unwelcome wake-up call> He's probably even more annoyed by the fact that Haytham is immaculately dressed without a hair out of place, fresh as a daisy. In reality, he went to bed almost straight after dinner and just spent ten minutes drinking stewed black tea to wake himself up.

"We're going to spar, of course. Nothing like a bright and early start to the day."

"Would it have killed you to wait until it was actually bright?" Connor demands. He scowls and rakes a hand through his tangled hair, thinking hard. "Give me ten minutes."

He unceremoniously shuts the door in Haytham's face. At least Connor didn't waste breath arguing this time. He's already starting to soften, to become more pliable. Haytham waits patiently. He has all the time in the world, after all.

When they finally reach the training hall (an vast cellar not unlike that at the old Assassin headquarters), Haytham explains.

"Quite frankly, you're no use to anybody if you waste away. I want to teach you some basic skills, like incapacitating people without murdering them. In all honesty, as a human being it embarrasses me that you're incapable of such a simple feat."

Connor's face colours. He finishes tying his hair in a knot and glares at Haytham.

"Get on with it," he says.

Haytham takes a deep breath and lifts his hands, planting both feet firmly beneath him as though he's going to start moving any moment. Connor gets into position, too. Haytham glances at the door, does a double-take.

"What the hell?" he gasps. Just as Connor turns around to see absolutely nothing out of the ordainary, Haytham closes the space between them and twists Connor's arms behind his back. He holds his wrists with one hand and uses his other to press a couple of fingers into his windpipe, then kicks at Connor's legs so he stumbles and almost falls. He ends up sprawled half over one of Haytham's knees, the rest of his body weight driving Haytham's fingers deeper into his throat, choking him.

"Your first mistake was being distracted by me," he murmurs into Connor's ear. "If I was going to kill you, I would force my hand up, suffocating you and snapping your neck. If I was going to incapacitate you, I would drop your weight from my leg and hold you by your windpipe until you fainted."

Connor makes a strangled noise, and Haytham lets him go.

"Don't be afraid to fight dirty," he continues. Connor massages his throat, sucking in deep breaths. "Use the heel of your hand to break a nose. Eyes are a weak spot on everybody. Do enough damage to such sensitive areas, and your enemy will be in too much pain to do anything to you."

He makes a fist, and places it where Connor's liver should be.

"If I hit you here, you'd start vomiting uncontrollably," he says. "Or at least feel nauseous enough for me to take advantage. Stomach blows are useful, but men as strong as we must be careful not to hit too hard, lest we cause fatal damage."

He puts the side of his fist to Connor's collarbone. Connor is very still, as though unsure what to do. Haytham expects that Achilles was never so close, so intimate. He's counting on it. He can feel Connor's heavy breath on his skin.

"If this is broken, the target will be in too much pain to move. They'll need to buy the services of an expensive doctor, and will take several months to heal. Good for annoying targets that do not need to be killed."

Next, he steps back and lifts his leg, planting it just above Connor's groin. The boy's expression is a picture- mingled confusion, surprise and just a hint of excitement. His skin has a slight pink tinge, almost unnoticeable.

"Striking above the genitals with enough force will shatter the pelvic arch. Victims will be left with chronic pain and little movement even if the bone heals. Many are left unable to even walk."

He removes his foot and eyes Connor.

"Are you all right?" he asks. "You look somewhat distracted."

"I'm fine," Connor says, only a slight hint of a nervous stammer. "I just don't like being touched is all."

"Oh? I'll bear that in mind."

"I mean, I'm not used to it," Connor clarifies. "Not that I hate it. It's an odd feeling. Strange."

"All right," Haytham says, and gives him a sceptical glance up and down. He lets his gaze linger a little too long on Connor's body. "We'll go another few rounds, and you can try out what I've just taught you."

Predictably, Connor is slightly clumsier than usual. He's hesitant and unsure of his actions, almost certainly worrying about whether Haytham's mannerisms are just that or something more intimate.

"Stop," Haytham orders, after pinning Connor to the floor. An hour of sparring has made Connor frustrated and he's only getting clumsier. Perhaps Haytham wasn't subtle enough in his advances. Well, it's more likely Connor has simply had no experience with relationships. If he's had no experience with sex either, then all the better.

Connor stops fighting, and tries to catch his breath. Haytham sighs, and gets up. He offers a hand to Connor, who takes it. A good sign.

"That's enough for today," he says. "We'll carry on another time. You didn't do badly. Your breakfast will probably be ready soon."

He pats Connor's shoulder absent-mindedly, and keeps his hand there just a bit too long. He leaves the hall. The servants are bustling about, and faint dawn light filters through the windows.

He's got a long day ahead of him, and a lot of work to do. Time for a pot of tea. Thank God the London Order still smuggle supplies over, despite the Boston Harbour fiasco a few months before.

I'm still loving this so, so much (and the speed with which you update is an awesome bonus)! Haytham is such a master manipulator; truly a magnificent bastard. I love how he wakes up Connor all early, pretending like it's totally normal for him. And the sparring session, guh *3*b

BTW, I know the waiting list on AO3 tends to be long, so if you want to get an account faster just lemme know! I have an invite that I'd gladly send you ♡ Oh, and best of luck with the house redecorating!

Oh man, you're making me blush! >_< Thank every last one of you for your lovely words. I guess I do my best writing stupidly late at night, haha...

Oh wow. This update. It is both seriously hot and disturbing. Haytham, you are a wily one; I can only worry for Connor here on out.
Great work as always, anon, and don't worry about time off of updates! Your writing is so excellent as to sate one for a long while, even when left hanging to the edge of our seats.

Taught my 4 year-old to say "schadenfreude" last week while watching cartoons. It just came up- so many cartoons involve watching the character get hurt and embarrassed... getting anvils dropped on their heads and so on...

This is amazing. I love Haytham's manipulation, their careful roles, the details of Haytham's needing a pot of tea to be ready for sparring this early in the day, Connor's snippy answers, everything is amazing!!

OP here.
I disappear for a few days and when I return I discover this glorious fill is already up! Thank you, thank you, anon! I really love where this is going, the slow, subtle manipulation and helplessly falling for it.

I love you Anon. *.* This fast speed at which you update is absolutely amazing! :D I certainly wasn't expecting one today, and it made my morning. *sighs happily* I shall be thinking of this all through my afternoon classes, I'm sure.

Love Haytham's subtle touches and Connor's getting nervous and embarrassed. I'm sure it'll only get worse from here on out, Connor. Anyways, this glorious fill is glorious and I look forward to reading more of it. :D
