Satahonhsatat (Listen) - Part 1

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello OP! I should probably start by saying that, naturally, this contain spoilers up to sequence 9 and that this is a semi-AU where Connor and Haytham are slightly more cooperative with each other and they don’t go looking for Church at the Caribbean sea, they go to the Opera House instead, naturally. I hope you enjoy it and I apologize in advance for any mistakes you might find!

Also, if anyone reading has trouble picturing Connor in more formal attires, you can try to imagine him in his previous concept suit, which you can see in details here: http://store.ubiworkshop.com/content/AC3_Aveline_Connor_BG.png

----------

During the winter the cold winds from the sea got the best of Hyatham and he find himself shivering involuntarily even through all the clothes and cape. He shifts his position, looks around for a bit. The city was surprisingly agitated at this time of the night. The taverns were crowded, most of them so full they had to move tables outside. People didn’t seem to mind the snow or the wind, probably already too embriagated to care, and the music and dancing kept them heated anyway. Most of the streets were already covered with thin snow and there were more ships anchored at ports, their captains likely taking a break during the festivities.

His hand caught a small pocket watch he always carried somewhere in his clothes. Connor was late. The night before Hickey had brought him letters when he arrived at the Green Dragon. He doesn’t live there anymore, but he’s been a regular through all those years. It was a good place to talk about the activities that didn’t require too much secrecy, while still keeping a look at the townspeople and hearing any rumour that might be floating around. Great place to get Hickey to do his work too. Give him a few coins, let him have his drinks, call in a girl or two and the bastard will do whatever they ask him too.

Two of the letters contained some precious informations confirming that Church was indeed going to watch the Christmas play with companions in New York’s Opera House and two tickets to the play, as he had requested earlier. Lee was the first to uncover the information, he overheard two guards talking about how Church was causing quite a big commotion by trying to get in contact with a few supposedly financial investors and a particular woman he has been chasing for quite a while now, despite being married.

He should’ve known better, should have cut ties with Church before. The moment the surgeon managed to get acquainted with a wealthy man who promised him a rich clinic space for the upper class Church immediately started running his mouth wild. Apparently he had find it amusing to entertain his new friend with his templar tales - no doubt bragging about it and filling it with outright lies in his favor - and he needed to put a stop to it.

Church managed to kill two birds with a stone - he need to meet with his upper class friends and the woman he was interested in wanted to see the upcoming play, seeming as she was a devout catholic, so he arranged to meet them all there.

Haytham had planned to kill Church before, though. His plan was pretending he didn’t know anything about Church’s traitorous activities, lure him for a faux meeting and finish him quickly before anyone arrived. However, as soon as he managed to get around Church, circling behind his back, Connor had arrived. He didn’t know why the boy was here and even what he wanted, it caught him completely by surprise. Connor swiftly jumped from the roof in front of the surgeon, making Haytham curse himself inwardly for not having noticed him before. Was he getting old already?

Then there was only arguing between the two of them. The bits he could make out were that Benjamin Church had stole something from Washington and Connor was here to get it back. The discussion had its advantages too. Hoping he could sniff Church’s life out of him while he was proffering lies to defend himself, he silently approached him, hidden blade already out and ready to strike.

But Connor knew better and grabbed his hand over Church’s shoulder before he managed to strike. By then the man had realized what Haytham wanted to do and fled for his life. Before he could even start yelling at his son for letting him escape, the boy had pointed a finger at his face and told him he wouldn’t let Haytham kill the man before he got what he had stolen back. Naturally he could easily ignore Connor’s demands and kill Church whenever he pleased, but it was surely going to take him a long time to have him out of Connor’s interferences. Now that he didn’t have the element of surprise on his side anymore and Church knew he was after him, it would take him even longer and free time was something he did not possess right now. He needed the surgeon seven feet underground and he needed it soon or else the fool might seriously compromise the order.

Therefore a truce had been formed. Haytham would help the boy finding whatever it was he needed back and Connor would in turn help put an end to Church’s life. The half-native boy was apprehensive at first. Killing the man was not on his list as Church had done nothing serious. He simply wanted what had been stolen, but Haytham saw it coming and promptly used his manipulative skills to make him see it his way - “Yes, let Church alive so that he can run back to his partners and plan a new attack. Did you know he has been meeting with some pretty powerful people? Or do you believe Church really won’t get back at Washington for it? Hmm? I would hate to say I had warned you.

He had hit the nail and he knew that, causing a smile of victory to grace his face. Connor walked away with a murmured “Fine.” and for the rest of the night Haytham reunited with his companions at the Green Dragon to talk about the assassin’s interference and gather a new plan to murder Benjamin Church.

The month that followed consisted of constantly going back and forth between Boston and New York where he met Connor a few times and ultimately unveiled his plan to overhear Church conversing with his friends about whatever was stolen (he kept forgetting to ask what it was that they were after) at the Opera House. They both liked the idea. Just in case, should the man not talk about it at all (which Haytham just barely took into account considering his big mouth), they could easily extract information from the man himself if he found himself alone for a single moment.

Which brought about one big problem for the both of them. One; despite being familiar with the Opera Houses back at England, he still hadn’t seen a single play in the New World and knew nothing about the space itself, proving it hard to find the man when the day finally came around (and he needed to secure an easy way out should the plan not work out as smoothly as he wanted it to) and two; Connor may be quite educated and knowledgeable considering his upbringing, but he doubted the boy knew anything about how plays worked. The way to fix this small problem of them was to visit the place before the aforementioned day. Which is why Haytham now found himself freezing to death while waiting for him in front of the Opera House. He just hoped the boy wouldn’t be too late that the doors would close and they were kept outside.

Answering his prayers, he finally took notice of the boy walking in his direction after he crossed the street ahead. His regular outfit had given place to more formal attires, though he still kept a white jacket that fit him surprisingly well. He wore a thick grey cape that seemed too old to be his (Achilles’, maybe?) over his shoulders to protect him from the cold. He still wore the symbolic assassin’s hood, but as soon and he got close to Haytham his hands made to remove it, revealing that his hair had been combed and tied with a black lace. He looked at the boy up and down.

“Achilles dressed you well, I have to admit.” His hands adjusted the cape over his shoulder and dusted away the tiny snowflakes. Getting closer, he reached for the back of his neck, adjusting the white hood beneath the cape so it wouldn’t stand out.

“He was against it, but lent me his clothes anyway. He said I would attract too much attention with normal clothes.”

“And he is absolutely right. Now let us be going, they’ll be closing the doors soon and we can’t enter after that.”

“Of course we can.”

Haytham rolled his eyes, already climbing the steps to the entrance where two well dressed men took his tickets, hat and cape.

“I meant, we can’t get in through the front door and I would rather not have to do it the hard way.”

Connor nodded and did the same, taking his cape out and giving it to the other man who had approached them. Both of them stared at the space inside. The floor was made of the finest wood and marble with red carpets adorning the main hallways. There were three staircases total, a big one on the center and two smaller ones on each side.

Haytham approached Connor, putting a hand on his shoulder to bring him closer so they could talk without other prying. That earned him a glare for the contact but he didn’t care. His son would have to deal with it if they were doing this together.

“Those stairs will lead to the cabins on the second floors. Those are private chambers that only the wealthy can afford. That is probably where we’ll find Church on the given day since they’re more spacious and will grant him more privacy with his colleagues. I still don’t know where exactly he will be located but keep it in mind anyway.” Haytham lowered his gaze and discreetly pointed to one of the two big doors below. Red curtains adorned the opening and would be closed when the play started. “Those will leads us to the common seats. That’s where we will be.”

They walked together through the door and Haytham could almost hear his son gasp at the size of the place. He had contained a chuckle. This one was actually a lot smaller than the ones he frequented back at home. The ceiling was closer to the ground and there were less chairs around. The stage was smaller too. He tried to imagine taking Connor back with him to England and showing him a real Theatre House. The imagery that formed in his head made him smile without thinking.

“We should arrive just on time at the day. If we get too soon Church or one of his men might find us out. As soon as we’re here we’ll need to locate his cabin and sit as close to it as possible. Though it will probably be crowded and we won’t have much choice” He muttered to himself more than to his son. Looking around, he tried to find a way to the upper level without having to go through the previous hall, since the doors will be closed during the actual play. “If we don’t see any backstage ladders around, we might have to climb. It is possible that we might have to hide through the entire play until we get the information you want.”

Connor nodded at him.

“Even after that, you’re still not to kill him yet.” Connor walked in front of him, looking him in the eye. “I’m not letting you touch a finger on him until I see that what he stole is indeed there.”

“Are you mad?” He almost shouted. “I don’t have the time to waste such perfect chance.” But the boy kept glaring at him, face getting closer to show his determination and that he wouldn’t let Haytham do as he pleased. “Alright, fine. Anything else? A cup of tea, maybe a few scones too?”

Connor’s eyes rolled and he turned back to the stage. The place started to fill quickly since it should be starting soon and he noticed as his son quickly stepped aside and away from the door when people started getting in.

“Nervous?”

He joined Connor at the other side, quietly leaning against the wall and crossing his arms in front of his chest.

“I don’t like big crowds in confined spaces.” He is claustrophobic? “And these clothes are too tight to let me move freely.” And he is worried about his abilities to run if something doesn’t go as planned.

Working with his son might prove to not be a complete waste of time. He found it amusing that he enjoyed learning about the little things in him. He stared fondly as the boy tried to adjust the pants around his groin - maybe too tight? - and moved his legs every once in a while to adjust to the fabric. Haytham moved towards him and inlcined against his shoulder.

“Relax.” He pretended not to notice as Connor’s hand quickly covered his ear after he whispered maybe too close.

----------

Two hours later, Haytham left the place with his son by his side. The first half hour of the play was mostly approaching the stage, getting a seat in the middle of the place so they could see the whole theatre better and the play was practically forgotten. But as soon as they were done making plans and calculations he found it amusing how Connor couldn’t keep his eyes off the stage. He was like an entranced kid, didn’t look away, didn’t speak, it was as if he had forgotten all the people around him, even Haytham himself.

“How was your first visit to an Opera House, enjoyed yourself?”

The boy nodded slowly.

“It reminded me of when I was a kid and played in ceremonies with the other kids. I mean, there were no stages or fancy people, but it was nostalgic.”

Something inside made Haytham clear his throat. Was that... pride he felt?

“Well, just remember to meet me here again in ten days. I’ll try and see if I can get Hickey to discover Church’s cabin by then.”

Making to walk away, he stopped when a hand caught his arm. He turned around, somewhat puzzled by the boy’s action. He was the one, after all, who disliked touching. They merely stared at each other for a few seconds without saying anything.

“Well?”

Connor let his arm go quickly, as if he had just realized what he was doing and it burned. The boy walked back two steps and put his white hood back in place. Without saying a word, he disappeared in the crowd (impossible to climb houses with those pants, most likely). The behaviour was strange but even more so was the fact that he hadn’t mind. While not as touch-phobic as his son, Haytham wasn’t exactly fond of it either. Lee was particular good in antagonizing him with his hands. He was a master touch in every way and even if he liked the man, his patience was always put to the test when around him.

Without thinking too much about it, he adjusted his cape and decided to go back to the nearest inn. He had to return to Boston in the following morning after all and sleep was all he wanted right now.

I hope I’ll get to write part 2 soon, but it appears you’ll have to be patient dear anon. I’m busy with work during the week and I usually only have time to write during the weekends, but I’ll see if I can have it up by next weekend! I’m thinking about 3 parts total, but it could end up shorter or longer since I’m horrible with planning. uwu I have the basic plot down but I’m thinking about how to fit sexy tiems in here~ I might have to cut it down to the bare minimum sadly. To make it up for it, I promise some good UST in the next part, hohoho. Also, sorry if there was any blatant mistake in there, English is not my first language.
