Drown(3a/??)

sorry for any typos, I don't normally beta these >.>

Weeks passed in what seemed like a matter of days. Haytham was so busy that he hardly had time to sleep and eat. And yet, wherever he went in Boston, there were still whispers of disappearances in the harbor. Guards mostly, and the occasional civilian. Whatever little time Haytham spent not plotting to further the templar agenda was spent puzzling what could be behind the missing guards.

At first he had put it all down to the work of a serial killer. When he had tried to broach the subject with Charles, Charles had seemed highly embarrassed and changed the subject immediately after assuring Haytham that it was nothing to be troubled about. But after his eye opening encounter with a creature of legend Haytham was loath to be taken off guard again. And then there was another theory, one that was unsettling as it was dangerous.

Could an assassin be behind the disappearances? It would explain why it seemed to be only guards who were going missing. It would also explain why Charles seemed so reluctant to talk. He was a very driven individual, was Charles, and no doubt he would have seen suffering an assassin to live a personal failure for the Order.

These thoughts kept Haytham awake at night far longer than they should have. Was it possible the assassins had found him? Perhaps they were planning an attack when his guard was down and were trying not to draw attention to themselves. But if that was the case why kill guards? Haytham’s thoughts followed this sort of pattern for the better part of an hour before he finally forced himself to stop thinking and sleep.

Tomorrow, he promised himself, he would go down to the docks and find out what was really behind the disappearances.

TW!!: Attempted Rape, but Connor saves the day.

Connor had been lurking beneath the docks for an hour, waiting to see if Achilles would show up. It had been three days since he’d last seen the old man and he was beginning to worry. Achilles was still in better shape than most men of his age, but he was still no spring chicken. When Connor heard a bell chime the midnight hour he gave up. If Achilles hadn’t shown up by now, he wasn’t going to tonight.

Feeling disappointed, Connor slipped under the water, weaving his way in between the wooden poles with ease. Just as he was clear of the boardwalk he heard a high-pitched scream. It came from his left and before Connor could consciously make a decision, he was already cutting through the water towards the noise. There were two people on the edge of one of the docks. Connor recognized the red uniform of the British militia on the man, but the woman was dressed plainly and was clearly trying to push the man off of her as he laughed and slipped a hand under her skirts.

Connor felt anger tighten in his gut. Without much thought as to what he was going to do he pulled himself half onto the walkway, his arms crossed in front of him casually.

“Hey.” He said loudly enough that the guard jerked away from the woman, who was able to push him back enough to flee.

“Oi!” the guard swayed on his feet, as if he was about to give chase and the smell of liquor hit Connor without warning. It took less than a second for Connor to decide what he was going to do.

“Wait.” He said, and felt smug as the drunken guard turned to look at him with a mixture of confusion and anger on his face. This was going to be too easy. Already Connor felt the shark inside of him urging him on; it was only too easy to give into instinct and the teachings his mother had shown him. “Why are you with someone who doesn’t want you?” even his voice was different when he did this, it was sweeter, seductive. He only had one chance at this, but the odds were in his favor.

“I…” the man seemed confused.

“I could treat you so much better than she could,” Connor encouraged, holding out a hand entreatingly.

“But I don’t like men…” the guard said, but he was already staggering towards the water.

“How do you know if you don’t try?” Connor’s voice promised a great many things in it and all of them were pleasurable.

“Well, when you put it that way…” And just like that he had him. It never failed to surprise him how easily manipulated humans could be. Connor allowed himself a shark-like grin full of very sharp teeth as the man took his hand. Something that looked like terrified understanding flashed across the man’s face and he tried to let go, but Connor had him now and he was not about to let him go.

Later, as Connor dragged the dead weight of the guard out to sea, he felt annoyed at not being able to move as fast as normal, but when he weighed this against the feeling of satisfaction of seeing the relief on the woman’s face he found it was not so bad a trade.

The mermpeople are kind of a mix of the merdudes who drown sailors and the sirens that do the same thing except they sing them to their deaths. I imagine at some point merpeople and sirens kind of did it and created this hybrid that is able to charm their targets into the water by just speaking if they have the concentration for it.
Also, Connor isn't going to eat the guard. He's probs just going to dump the corpse in a shark pen or something. I feel like Connor got spoiled by Achilles with human food, so now he feels like he's above eating 'just' a human when he could have something better, like, idk chicken. .... I mean... he feels... like its um... wrong... to you know.. eat people.... :T

I bet ya Connor doesn't see the appeal of eating bodies no more when he could get home cooked meals from Achilles. He'd rather have a cooked chicken then a raw human. Yay Achilles for taming Connor, somewhat. Lol

Keep going please! :)

The docks were almost pleasant at this time of night, Haytham thought abstractedly as he leaped from roof to roof. Without the constant chatter and noise he could already feel himself start to relax. It was true he had lived in London for most of his life so the hustle and bustle of the city was nothing new to him, but at times he found himself wishing for someplace in the countryside, maybe close to New York… but those thoughts were best left for a different time. Two guards were passing beneath him and a snippet of their conversation had caught his interest.

“—just don’t understand it.” The taller one was saying gruffly.

“You don’t have to understand it, idiot. You just have to do it.” The other one sounded like they had been on this topic for a while and his patience was running thin.

“But the boardwalk is free game for them after midnight anyway. Everyone knows it. And even if we do catch one of them in the act what are we supposed to do? We can’t kill ‘em, they’re too fast for that! Besides, the only folk that come down here this late are either too stupid to care about their lives, or are looking to lose theirs’!”

“If you’re so scared why don’t you just toddle on home, cupcake?” the smaller guard looked like his head was going to explode, “I’ll go ahead and finish the route by myself and pick up your share of the payment!”

Haytham heard the outraged response as he turned away, he had heard what he wanted to and had no interest watching the fight that was sure to follow.

-- -- --

“Will you make it home okay?” Connor inquired once more as Achilles packed his books into a leather satchel. He had nearly had a heart attack when Achilles had hobbled onto the docks on a cane that evening.

“I’ll be fine, Connor,” somehow Achilles managed to sound fond and exasperated at the same time, “I’m staying at my niece’s house tonight—”

“—and you board the ship for Davenport tomorrow,” Connor finished with a scowl, “I wish you would tell me what actually happened to your leg.”

“It’s nothing to concern yourself with, boy,” Achilles huffed as he struggled to his feet, “I can’t take a fall as well as I used to back in the day.”

“Be careful,” Connor said, choosing to ignore Achilles’ words. His tail churned the water in frustration as he thought of how vulnerable one stubborn old man would be walking home in the dark. “They’ve increased the guard lately.”

“Yes, they have…” Achilles gave him a look that spoke volumes, “Connor, I’ve been hearing rumours…”

“They weren’t all me,” Connor began defensively and was cut off as Achilles raised a hand for silence.

“That may very well be the case,” he sighed, “but none the less, I don’t want this to become a habit for you. Don’t get mixed up in the affairs of humans, Connor. It’s not your job, and it will only cause you more trouble than it’s worth.” He fixed him with a gaze that could have stuck a fly to a wall at one hundred feet. “Do you understand?”

Under that gaze Connor felt like a naughty child caught with its hand in the kelp jar. There wasn’t anything else he could say other than, “Yes, I understand.”

“Good,” Achilles settled his hat upon his head and began to walk away, “I’ll see you later, Connor. Safety and peace.”

“Safety and peace, Achilles.” Connor replied, watching him go.

Just as Haytham's still a templar, Achilles is still an assassin. And he's using a cane because he jumped off a building and landed wrong, but really this is up to your interpretation. Connor met Achilles in Boston when he was still pretty young, and he's been to the Davenport homestead (well, the lake bit and maybe the rivers) a couple of times but Davenport's a pretty long journey from his village compared to Boston.
Also, I swear to god, this next bit WILL have Connor and Haytham meeting. It might take a minute to get up, though, because I have real life things that need to be seen to. you know how it is.

*happily cheers* So glad to see this update. Really enjoying the Achilles and Connor interactions but I can't wait to see how Connor and Haytham treat each other.

Hey, just out of curiousity does Connor have a shark tail then, complete with the dorsal fin? (I always thought that the shark tails seem so much less flexible than mermaid tails). God I'm putting way too much thought into this but I just love this so much
