Re: Five Men and a Baby
(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)Oh boy, wishing so hard this gets filled! asdfghj I'd fill this if I could think up some substantial plot, but, alas.
Tradition and Improvisation
(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 06:47 am (UTC)(link)Not exactly what OP asked for, but hey, adults and babies and shenanigans, yeah?
----
William had been dozing off at the table when he was startled awake by Haytham’s sudden shouting.
“Connor, no, CONNOR!”
The chair that he had been leaning back on fell forward with a dull thud, and before him, in the middle of the messy spread on the desk sat Connor, the hidden blade in his hands. Alarms went off in William’s mind, and he tugged the weapon out of Connor’s hands.
Haytham picked Connor up, holding him close to his chest as he glowered furiously at William.
“What were you thinking!? I thought I asked you to watch him for a moment!”
William frowned. Right, he was remembering something like that. Vaguely. But he had been tired and had told Hickey to look after Connor. He looked around, and oh, of course, Hickey was nowhere to be found. Well, no point explaining that to Haytham, who looked like he was going to murder everyone, sans Connor.
Next best thing was to improvise then.
“Uh,” he said, looking around the table. Connor’s hand-crafted wooden toy horse, some books, and a plate of food caught his eye amidst the mess of papers. “It’s… It’s a Chinese tradition.”
Haytham raised an eyebrow, quite obviously expecting more of an explanation. Connor sitting on his arm and swatting at Haytham’s ponytail did nothing to detract away from the anger that Haytham was emanating. Okay, maybe a little bit. But it’s fine, William told himself that he had it under control.
“Shao Jun mentioned it in her codex. The Chinese would leave a spread of objects on the table for the baby to pick. It was, um, it was a sort of fortune telling-“ Haytham rolled his eyes at that, so William spoke faster, waving the hidden blade in his hand around a little for emphasis, “to see what the baby would turn out to be like, and Connor picked the hidden blade, so that means Connor’s going to become an Assassin?”
Haytham’s demeanour seemed to relax a little at that, and William sighed a quiet sigh of relief.
“Interesting.” Haytham said. Connor now looked like he was attempting to chew on Haytham’s ponytail, but with poor success. “Tell me more about this… tradition.”
From the corner of his eye, Hickey was striding into sight. William shot him a subtle look of warning, and Hickey looked at Haytham in alarm, before backing away slowly. Right, right. The tradition. “Uh, some babies pick a second object. To signify a… a second calling.” Right, yes, that was it.
“Is it?” Haytham said in curiosity. “Well then, I see no harm in trying.” He said, and William watched as he tried to set Connor down on the table again. Connor clung determinedly to Haytham though.
“Dada!” Connor chirped happily, attempting to climb on to Haytham’s shoulders with little success. “Dada.” He repeated again eagerly.
“I… well, I think that means he picks you?” William tried.
“Terrible choice.” Haytham said, though he didn’t look one bit disappointed and far too pleased. “Come, Connor, it’s time for your nap.”
William breathed as Haytham carried Connor away. Yeah, he definitely owed Shao Jun one.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 07:25 am (UTC)(link)Also, isn't that the method they use to find the new Dali Llama in Tibet? It would make sense if China and Tibet had some similar traditions... Hm, anyway, so cute! I hope you write more. :3
Re: Tradition and Improvisation
(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 07:49 am (UTC)(link)I'm not sure about Tibetan traditions, to be honest, but I'm pretty certain it's in Chinese culture, at least. Regardless, to the best of my understanding, Tibet was once part of historical China, so any similarities would not be surprising.
Glad you enjoyed it! :)

Re: Tradition and Improvisation
(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)I kinda have to wonder how the men in question first reacted to having a baby Connor. I suspect Haytham had to have long talk with Hickey about his language.
