More Than Instinct - Part 1

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
So this is an AU of the Tyranny of King Washington, which basically means it’s an AU of an AU. AUception...

----------

If there was one thing Connor was thankful for was his proximity to king Washington, even if he became to despise the man more and more lately. Right now it came as a blessing because he would not know what to do if the soldiers tried to stop him. For every man he passed on his way, he sent a murderous glare that warned “out of the way” and they quickly dispersed as it was the king’s orders to always let him through. Speaking with him was priority and if anyone tried to stop him, he would not be responsible for his actions.

Connor had heard his father say it was weird for a so called king to still fight in the battlefield himself, but to him, it was weird not to imagine that man here, among his troops, fighting to free the colonies from the crown. He still held respect for him, even after everything he did, but right now...

Approaching Washington’s tent, he was met with the king’s back. Washington was analyzing something on his desk, probably war strategies and letters. Two guards on his side stepped in front of him, but Connor quickly shoved both away, grabbing his shoulder and turning him abruptly.

“Connor.” There was surprise in his face, but soon it changed to realization.

“Explain.”

“I will. First, release me. Let’s talk.”

“Now!”

Washington grabbed Connor’s hands and jerked them away.

“They’re safe. I didn’t do anything to them.”

“Where?”

“Deep inside the Frontier.”

That’s all he needed to hear. As he turned around and made to get out, he heard the king’s voice again.

“I saved them, Connor. The french were to attack your village and I moved them to protect them.”

“Well, thank you, your highness.” He turned and bowed, speaking through gritted teeth that clearly displayed his sarcasm. “But your protection is unnecessary. We can defend ourselves.” He continued on his tracks, but stopped when something came to mind. “And I hope this is the last time you do anything to them without consulting me first. They’re my people, not yours to command. I’ve fought for you before, commander, don’t make me believe I made the wrong choice.”

Truthfully, he shouldn’t be calling him commander anymore, but old habits died hard and Washington had never expressed any dislike for the old title when it came from him, so he continued. Though as it seems they wouldn’t be seeing each other any time soon and thus names and titles could be forgotten for the time being. Just as he was about to leave, he heard Washington speak again.

“Are you going back to Haytham, Connor?”

“What I do or don’t is none of your concern.”

He left at last.

They were truly useless in the end, the titles. Even if George Washington was a deity, should he learn that harm had come to his people by His hands, he would still defy Him.

----------

He walked through the forest, jumping from tree to tree until Washington’s camp was lost behind and he couldn’t see it anymore. It was unlikely he wouldn’t return to him in the end - he always did, but for now, he needed some time away from the king. The first thing he needed to do was find his people and make sure they were alright.

He was grateful, sure, but still couldn’t shake the feeling that moving his people away from their land - their sacred land - was wrong. He’d have to make sure to bring them back to his village as soon as the french were away from here.

Connor halted when he saw the fire beneath him and propped down from the tree. His father got up from the sound he made, but relaxed when he realized it was just him.

“They’re to the west, deep inside the Frontier. I’m going to see them.” he walked to where his horse had been tied to a tree and started to undo the knot.

“Alright.” Haytham did the same to his horse. “Then let us go.”

“No.” He got on his horse and stared at his father. “Go back to my village, make sure they didn’t destroy anything. It’s not the kind of thing he would do, but I need to make sure.”

He didn’t wait for an answer and signaled for his horse to start trotting. He knew there was a chance his father would just ignore him, but he would deal with him later. Right now there was only thing in his mind and he couldn’t care about anything else.

----------

It took him an hour, perhaps more, until he finally found a group of hurriedly raised tents and two small pyres. The place was unguarded, unprotected, but everyone was there and they looked at him as he approached. The clan mother was seated near a stream and he decided not to bother her. He just wanted to make sure they were okay.

Looking around he noticed that this hunting region was way different from back home, and while bears were not common here, he should alert them in any case. without the protection of their palisade, they’d have to appoint sentinels and make rounds. They didn’t bring most of their belongings - he saw a few bows around and some lucky charms customary to his people, but they’d need more if they were to hunt around and defend against invasion.

Sighing, Connor nodded at some of his friends as he made his way to the clan mother, sitting by her side. He wanted to know why she even agreed to leave their land behind and for a moment the thought of Washington expelling them by force crossed his mind, but it wasn’t like the man to do so. He was diplomatic and careful, and he knew Connor would come back for him if anything happened to his people. At least, he hoped as much.

Instead he told her about defending themselves. About how he wouldn’t be able to stay and how he would make sure their land was safe. He also explained to her that they would have to patrol to area, that it was not safe here and that the redcoats might find them and try to make them leave.

They would need supplies for surviving, make new bows and knives, use whatever weapon they may find on the battlefield to protect themselves. Horses too. He told her to find horses, even if they weren’t used to the animals. If anything should happen, they should send one of their people immediately to tell him news in their old village, where he would stay until everything was fine for their return.

He contemplated telling her about his father, but decided against it in the end. No reason to drag him into this.

Without ceremony, he told the entire village he would work as soon as possible to arrange their safe return and left.

----------

Saying he was surprised to return to his village and find Haytham already there was an understatement. He was positively certain that the man would have run off to attend whatever business he had to, but said nothing as he approached him. It was still some time until winter arrived, but the cold winds made his father build a small fire inside the main hut.

“So, how did it go?”

“They seem well.” He sat across his father, enjoying the welcome heat. “For now. But I want to bring them back here as soon as possible.”

Haytham nodded. “Fair enough. Honestly, after everything Washington did, I’m surprised you still trust the man, but” he added as Connor glared at him “that’s your business and I’m not about to indulge in your affairs. Whatever the case, I was hoping Charles could stay here with us--”
“No!” Connor practically hissed. “That monster isn’t getting anywhere near...” he stopped.

“What? What is it?” There was worry in his father’s voice and he couldn’t blame him for he knew he must have looked shocked with the sudden realization.

Without saying anything, Connor darted out and circled around the hut, going near the stream at the back of the village. His heart thumped fast in his chest and bad thoughts wandered through his mind, wild possibilities of what ifs.

Still, he slowed down and stopped entirely when Next to a tiny hill stood a small lump of dirt and a few flowers scattered around. They were withering already, probably because no one had been here for a while to take care of placing down new flowers, but at least the place seemed untouched, just as he remembered it. Letting out the air he didn’t even know he was holding, he kneeled down and patted the soft ground as if it were a fragile being. Behind him he felt his father’s presence, but didn’t move to acknowledge him.

“It’s safe at least.” Connor whispered and walked around, grabbing the dead flowers and throwing them on the stream. “I was worried they might have...” His voice died in his throat.

Connor didn’t say anything when he felt a hand on his shoulder. On any other occasion he would have batted it away or shrugged it off, but right now, his father’s support was welcome. Haytham didn’t say anything, simply nodded. Neither of them knew what to say and it was honestly better this way. He wished it was under other circumstances, pleasant ones, but still, part of him felt glad that he could finally show him his mother’s grave.

Muttering a prayer in his native language, Connor turned and walked back with Haytham towards the hut. “Help me prepare for the night.”

They would need to roll out the mattresses, arrange food, build a bigger fire. They were staying for a while.

----------

On top of the hill just at the border of the Kanien’kehá:ka region, Washington forced his steed to stop and brought up his spyglass. Sure enough Connor walked in the middle of the abandoned village by his father’s side. Did the boy not think they might get attacked during the night? Did he think it was safe to stay here? Honestly, it almost made him feel bad about it.

By his side stood two soldiers and on the other was Lafayette.

“Your highness, it’s far from me to doubt your judgement, but are you sure about this?”

Washington simply took the crystal from the bag he attached to his steed. “You worry too much.” He looked at the item in his hand and back to his advisor. “I’m just running a few tests at what this can do. But if the scriptures we found were right, the real apple should be much stronger.” His trusted companion still seemed unsure so he quickly added. “I’m not doing anything to hurt them.”

And with that the king slowly raised the orb in the air, watching with amusement as it started glowing.

OH MY GOD ANON YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HAPPY I AM RIGHT NOW!

You update halfway through a (really awesome) shift at work, and then on the way home I check which prompt this is for... and it's for one of my prompts!

Firstly, I love the nice King Washington so much! I wonder what he thinks he's making Connor and Haytham do... or maybe he ships them, lol... And the father-son interactions between Connor and Haytham are adorable, too. I can't wait to read the next part, anon. Thank you so much for what you've given me so far! <3

This... This is PERFECT. Even if it is only the beginning, I can already tell this will be an amazing story!

I love how Washington isn't just pure evil, and actually, for the lack of a better word, 'saved' the villagers by moving them, instead of slaughtering them. And now he is going to have fun, for poops and giggle.

I loved that you added Ziio's grave in this. When I found out that it is where their home used to be, I had so many feels..

Keep up the great work!
I am eagerly awaiting the next part!

MY CRY OF DESPAIR WAS ANSWERED.

(I can't express myself very well so just take a "adsfasjdabdköasbsajkdbföiahfabsd" as praise??)

I feel like I'm being teased with an amazing first part, and then.. silence for a month. It's like waiting for the DLCs. :(

I really hope this has not been abandoned!

That's because author!anon is a horrible person who's had the second part ready for quite some time now and completely forgot to post ir because she got too caught up with other fills, work and college. OTL I have no excuse.

I'm really so sorry. I'm proofreading and fine tuning the second part now and I assure you it will be posted later today.
