Master of the House - part 17

Not sure I'm happy with this chapter. :/ Kinda boring imo, but couldn't resist the philosophical points. Meh.

Master of the House

Chapter 15 - Civil Conversations

Breaking the night’s fast was a tense matter the following morning and dissipated the good mood Charles had woken up with. James’s Omega would not stop glaring at him balefully.

Oh, to be sure, the man did not speak of anything untoward and remained polite, if only just, throughout the meal. But, nevertheless, Charles began to feel quite...uncomfortable.

Whether it was because of the Omega’s spending the entire time glaring at him rather than eating or the bare civility Ronald and Mary had greeted him with earlier when no apology was forthcoming, he did not know. But he was the master of the household, and he would not let either servants (even such longstanding and respected ones such as Ronald and Mary) or his own guest dictate his actions.

And so, discomfort or not, he nibbled his bread, took a few small bites of his beef and sipped his tea in silence.

When a few of his servants announced that Matthew had just arrived and was in the parlor waiting for him, he found he could not leave the table fast enough.

“Matthew,” he greeted, shaking the man’s hand enthusiastically. “It is good of you to come!”

The man looked at him askance, clearly contemplating the possibility of his having gotten dementia or some other illness in the short time that he had last seen him.

“Charles.”

Matthew then looked behind Charles, a sneer on his face.

“And James’s little pet, I see.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Charles could see James’s Omega bristling in anger.

“Now, now, Matthew. I believe that Clipper, here, can help me with my wife’s problem.”

Strangely enough, that didn’t seem to calm the Omega.

“Oh?” Matthew looked vaguely interested. He turned to James’s Omega. “And what do you know of medicine?”

The Omega glared at them both. “What Mr. Lee really meant is that I am here to provide moral support in Connor’s time of need.” Then, muttering, “But how useful that will be since a certain personage keeps mucking things up, I don’t know.”

They both ignored him.

“Really, Charles. I know I spoke about the importance of bonds, but, really? James’s toy? I did not mean—“

Charles held up a weary hand. “You will still be paid the same amount for your services.”

Matthew looked at him in consideration and glanced at the Omega.

“With a little extra to have him underfoot,” Charles conceded.

Matthew smiled, a smug, satisfied smile.

“Excellent! I’ve brought the books, as you’ve requested, and I’m sure that your guest will be utterly delightful to collaborate with.”

With that, Matthew strode towards the main rooms of the manor, servants following with boxes full of books.

Charles stared at Matthew, wishing, as he so often did, that the man’s knowledge and skills did not make him invaluable. Because Charles would gladly dispense with him if he could.

Just before he made to follow the man, he noticed that James’s Omega, too, had a similar look on his face, no doubt wishing to enact his own brand of...collaboration...with the man.

He leaned down, next to the Omega’s ear. “He may be an opportunistic fool, but he is one of the best of his trade. And very professional once he’s been paid. He will do Connor no ill.”

-----

Clipper ground his teeth in frustration. No ill? Ill had already been done!

“I am familiar with him and his ilk and know his full measure. It is not him I worry about doing ill to my friend.”

Lee backed off, his expression rapidly cooling.

“If you’re implying I would hurt him now when he is like this...”

Clipper cut him off, still infuriated by the events of the night before.

“I imply nothing.”

The man pursed his lips, clearly agitated by the statement.

“Listen,” he grabbed Clipper’s arm roughly. “You may be here to help him, but this is my house, my estate, my property and...”

“Exactly. I am here to help him. But it is difficult with you jeopardizing my efforts.”

Lee exploded at that.

“I care for his wellbeing too! I want him to wake up too!”

“Then why do you continue to hurt him?”

For a moment, Clipper thought that the man was going to strike him. He trembled so with fury and rage, and he balled his hands into fists.

The moment passed.

Lee swallowed, hard.

“I admit I was remiss in my actions towards you last night.”

Oh?

“It has been pointed out to me that I behaved childishly and unbefitting my station.”

Was he truly hearing this? Clipper’s eyes flew wide open, disbelieving.

“As such, I believe an...apology...is in order.”

Clipper pinched himself. He must be dreaming. He must.

Though why he would dream of Lee, he did not know.

“It was unworthy of me to mock you so, when you have been doing nothing but trying to help my wife.”

Lee stopped. Then snarled at the wide-eyed look on Clipper’s face.

“You needn’t act so surprised,” the man bit out. “I have occasionally made mistakes in the past before.”

Clipper stared at him.

It was, stunning, to say the least, but not the least bit helpful. While it was true that the man had brought to mind some unpleasant memories, that wasn’t what frustrated Clipper so.

I,” Clipper began, “am not the one you need make amends to.”

The man shook his head.

“Despite your arguments, unless Matthew tells me I am bringing harm to either Connor or the baby, I will not keep from my husbandly rights.”

He frowned at Clipper.

“I don’t understand how you, who have been married to James, can fail to understand this. While I do admit that we haven’t had the same aims and our marriage did not start the best of ways, Connor is my wife. Society allows my conjugal rights and applauds me for my fidelity to him when I could have had many more Omegas as mistresses. What, about this arrangement, upsets you so?”

Lee seemed genuinely puzzled.

Clipper felt genuinely appalled.

“Choice.” As if it were not obvious. “Even if it were his duty to submit to you for the sake of society,” Clipper tried not to spit out the word but rather suspected he failed, “which I am not sure it is, it was never his choice to wed you, to be your wife in the first place! Can you not see that by continually forcing the matter, by giving him no reprieve, you are harming him and, through him, your unborn child?”

Lee looked at him as if he might an unusual creature.

“On the contrary, it teaches him to submit to me, to, once he wakes, accept his role and place in this house. The faster he learns not to strain at the bit, the less he’ll hurt himself.”

Clipper shook in frustration.

“He is not a thing you can order to be what you will.”

“I fear society and law disagrees with you.”

Clipper took a deep breath, trying to calm himself.

“Do I at least have your word that, if it proves harmful to him, you will cease your activities?”

Lee bowed, gracefully, courteously, gentlemanlike.

Clipper has never been more disgusted in his life.

“But of course. He is my wife.”

How he wished he were not.

Wow, it seems Charles is changing for the not-so worse. I kind of like how you seem to bring back his old-self (before he becomes a Templar). The enthusiastic handshake reminded me of his first introduction to Haytham, and of course Matthew is utterly confused.

Also, you weren't kidding when you said Matthew was Church all over again. Wonder how he and Clipper are going to work together in order to bring Connor back. I'm kind of curious how Haytham is taking the news about a second grandchild and Clipper's involvement, does he even know his son is a vegetable right now?

Oh yay. :) However, Charles's not-so worse will never be up to par with what Clipper wants. And especially not what Connor wants. The sad thing is, with the exception of the way that Charles and Connor's marriage came about (murder wasn't exactly condoned and all), society would probably approve of the way Charles has been treating his wife.

But yep! :D Charles is ever the same Charles, a monster to those he sees as not worth his time or his enemies, really great to the people he likes (hence his friendship with James). Matthew falls in-between (he doesn't approve of the man's greed and gets annoyed at how obnoxious he can be), but he doesn't dislike him like he did Hickey (manners and gentlemanly behavior are quite important to him).

And Connor is in transition from the first camp to the second camp. Whereas, before, he was hated foe, then he was enemy captive and now, Charles is thinking of him more and more as the mother of his future child.

Matthew and Clipper...lol, I laugh just thinking about it. Water and oil. But Matthew will be professional since he'll get paid for it, and Clipper will try his best to tolerate the man for Connor's sake. Not for too long though. Matthew only calls about once a week to check on Connor's status.

Good question about Haytham. ...I'll have to chew on that a bit. :)

He'll be at the coronation ceremony though, which is in about a week, fic-time. We should find out at that time. Charles will probably start making preparations for that soon.

Society would probably approve of the way Charles has been treating his wife

That is sad, and probably one of the reasons (aside from being an Assassin) why Connor probably never thought or intended to get married... until he met George ;_;

Ahh the coronation, I am looking forward to that. I wonder if Connor will have some minor/major improvements then. Also, I do hope James and Charles will let their Omegas continue to be friends (why do I picture these two being leered at Templar gatherings)

Re: Master of the House - part 17

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I thought so too. ;_; George actually appreciated Connor's strength.

I tried to stay true to society at the time: http://www.salomemagazine.com/chamber.php?id=178

...well, other than the A/O setting, of course. :)

The fact that Charles was not using physical violence against his spouse would probably have even earned him accolades. The fact that Connor resists submitting would have made society frown upon him.

...I also got the feeling that they'd be leered at. But of course, Connor and Clipper will have some devastating insult ready for that. ;D Connor might have some minor improvement, but I want to save major ones for some future events. :D

Next chapter will be to the left, I noticed it’s getting a bit squeezed to the side.

Also, I know nothing about what doctors may have done to check up on the health of a pregnant person a couple of centuries ago (plus added complication of A/O universe). Making it all up as I go.

Also, I think I disgusted myself with Matthew’s attitude which I found even more appalling than Charles’s, given he’s a doctor...then again, those in the medical profession back then had no oath to do no harm and frequently took advantage of situations for their own benefit...

Master of the House

Chapter 16 - Doctor's Visit

As Matthew bustled about Connor’s bedside, Charles found himself getting extremely irritated.

Matthew was taking his pulse, prodding him with various thermometers, massaging his belly...

And the only thing that his wife had on was a long, thin, white shift, unbuttoned at his stomach so that Matthew had access to him.

The sight of the doctor rubbing at his wife’s smooth skin, at the vulnerable flesh that housed his child...

Charles ground his teeth and restrained himself from ripping Matthew off of his wife. He reminded himself that, unlike Edwards and the late Hickey, Matthew Davies was a greedy bastard, not a lecherous one.

It didn’t help much.

To distract himself from unwanted thoughts, he turned his attention to the only conscious Omega in the room.

To his great satisfaction, he saw that, Clipper, too, seemed somewhat disconcerted at how intimate the inspection was.

The Omega fidgeted, horrified eyes glancing at the hands on Charles’s wife and then away to the far wall. Whether the unease came from the fact that the hands belonged to Matthew or seeing more of his mentor than he had ever dreamed, Charles did not know.

A thought came to him, and his eyes narrowed. At least, he hoped the man had not seen more of his wife.

Oblivious to the thoughts that tormented Charles, the Omega’s curiosity overcame his unease, and he approached Matthew.

“How is he?”

Matthew spared a quick disinterested glance at the Omega. “Not getting any worse and perhaps even a little better, I’m surprised to say. He is no longer deteriorating quite as quickly as he was.”

He turned to Charles.

“Did you change his regimen?”

Charles nodded slightly. “We took him outside with the dogs, yesterday, in the afternoon.”

“Hm.”

Matthew was, once again, absorbed examining his patient.

“And,” James’s Omega hesitated. “And the baby?”

“Can’t tell as of yet.” Matthew was testing the limberness of Connor’s hands, arms and legs.

Charles clenched his fists at the sight of his wife being handled like a puppet by another Alpha.

“How did you know he was pregnant then?” The Omega stared at Charles’s wife with mixed concern and reverence.

“He missed a couple of heats since the miscarriage.”

While James’s Omega flinched, Charles gaped at Matthew.

“How do you know when his heats are?” he choked out, scandalized.

Matthew turned to him.

“Come now, Charles, sir,” he amended. “I knew how long the last pregnancy lasted, and given that heats are regular and a male Omega is only fertile during heat...”

“But couldn’t he just have an irregular cycle? Or-or the recent stress cause him to miss them?” the Omega babbled, face red with embarrassment.

Matthew shrugged.

“The servants showed me their log of his daily needs, and his urination has increased significantly within the past couple of months as his growing womb increases pressure on his bladder. Plus, his breasts are also softening a bit and getting ready to produce milk for the infant, well,” he chuckled, “as much as any male Omega can.”

He turned to Charles, also flushed bright red at this point. “You may want to look into getting a wet-nurse for the child to help with that. It has the added advantage of helping him conceive again faster if his milk dries up. I can give you the names of several reputable female Omegas...for a fee, of course.”

The man smiled toothily and then turned back to his patient.

The room fell silent again, Charles too flabbergasted with the thought of Matthew of his wife’s cycles and Connor nursing their child, Clipper too mortified by the sudden information regarding his own body.

After a moment, the Omega gathered his courage. “Doctor,” Clipper began, face still flaming from the last comment. “We’ve been trying to increase positive memories and associations. Connor means a lot to me—“

Charles coughed.

“—and the child means a lot to Mr. Lee—“

Charles glowered at the Omega. Was that all he had taken away from their earlier conversation? Did he not see how Charles was actually doing right by his mentor?

“—for him to get better...”

Matthew waved an impatient hand. “Yes, yes. Continue doing as you did. It is difficult to tell so quickly, and his recent improvement may just be happenstance, but it cannot hurt to continue increasing the positive stimulus.”

“...what about the negative ones?” the Omega asked suddenly.

“Pardon?” Matthew turned towards him in surprise just as Charles bristled in anger.

Surely the man wasn’t going to bring that up now. Surely...

“Connor never welcomed Mr. Lee’s advances—“

Charles couldn’t believe the gall of the boy. Now? Here?

“—and Mr. Lee insists on making full use of his ‘husbandly’ rights—”

He was going to kill the Omega, James be damned.

“—wouldn’t that be considered to be a negative stimulus?”

As Charles stood contemplating various methods of disposing of the troublesome Omega, Matthew looked ponderingly from him to the determined Omega.

“Are you asking,” Matthew removed his spectacles slowly, “if Charles bedding his wife will be deleterious for him or the child?”

Clipper stubbornly raised his chin. “Yes.”

Matthew laughed in mirth. “My dear Omega, have you had...relations...with Mr. Collins?”

The Omega turned pink again. “I don’t see what that has—“

“Yes or no, Omega.”

“Y-yes.”

Interesting. Charles was beginning to think the man a complete virgin with his insistence on interfering with his love life.

Matthew continued, “and have you been harmed by any of your...previous encounters?”

The Omega tried to protest. “But that’s—“

“Again, yes or no?”

“That’s not the same—“

Matthew put up a hand, obviously finished with the line of reasoning. “I can see where you want to spare your friend from the touch of us ‘evil’ Templars,” he laughed knowing, sharing a look with Charles. “But rest assured, sex isn’t causing any physical damage to either him or the child.”

Charles relaxed.

Perhaps he was a bit...overhasty...when it came to James’s Omega. The man’s questions did lead to some valuable insight and, well—it would have been a shame to lose access to his wife’s succulent body.

James’s Omega did not seem as pleased with the answer and opened his mouth to argue.

“I will brook no more on this,” Matthew admonished him sternly. “Although,” he turned back to Charles, “if he recovers his mind, I would not force your attentions on him if he fights you. That may damage the child.”

Charles frowned at the thought. He might need a new bargain with his wife if he wanted continued access to the boy’s body then.

“There are herbs in this new country to make him more...compliant, but little research has been done on their safety while an Omega is pregnant.”

In the corner of his eye, Charles could see James’s Omega turning pale in disgust. And for his own part, Charles had to admit he felt a bit ill at the thought of drugging his wife. Fertility teas, yes, but narcotics?

“And later on in the pregnancy?” Charles felt compelled to ask.

“That is an old wives’ tale. Pure fictitious. You may penetrate him as long as you do not damage him during it.”

With that, Matthew began packing up his instruments.

“I shall leave the books with you and take my leave. You may send the payment to the regular location.”

-----

“Wait.”

Clipper resolutely stepped in front of Davies’s path as he was about to exit the manor.

The man didn’t look impressed.

“Step aside.”

“You only said physical damage. Mr. Lee forcing himself on Connor while Connor is like this wouldn’t cause him or the child physical damage.”

Davies raised an eyebrow.

“So I did.”

“What about mental? What about emotional? What about—“

Davies stopped him. “Who do you think I am, Omega?”

Clipper stalled, suddenly unsure.

“A doctor? A Templar?”

Davies smirked.

“Yes, a Templar. A Templar who owes his first loyalty to the Order and sees his next coppers filled by the likes of our dear Charles Lee and others who seek my services. And it doesn’t pay,” he wagged a finger in front of Clipper’s face, “to disagree with the man who is paying you when he clearly wants to fuck his wife.”

Clipper tasted bile. “You would sacrifice Connor, sacrifice your professional integrity...”

Davies actually laughed at this.

“Oh, dear me, where do you Assassins get your ideas? So naïve, Omega.”

He looked mockingly at Clipper.

“Your dear Connor was instrumental in destroying more than half of our most valued members, of our inner circle. Really, Omega, do try to remember that I have no cause for sympathy for you or yours, save what I am paid to do.”

Clipper shook with anger. Vile, disgusting...

“But don’t fret yourself.” Davies patted his head condescendingly. “Connor is our soon-to-be Grandmaster’s wife and our current Grandmaster’s son. He carries the heir to both those respectable—and wealthy—lines. If I believed the child would be damaged by such activity, I would discourage it. It promises a steady stream of income for the next several years, after all.”

And on that note, Davies brushed past a stunned Clipper and stepped out the door.

As Clipper listened to the sound of a carriage being drawn away, only one thought made itself known to him.

I will protect him from you, from all of you. I don’t know how, but I will.

Wow if you look at our post listings, it forms a lightning bolt ^^;

Anyway, Matthew really is disgusting. He's practically Church (if not worse). Not sure if it's mentioned, but is he a member of the Inner Circle or a low level? Poor, poor Clipper is so alone trying to protect defenseless Connor against the Templars who are just using his body... he's not even a human being in their eyes.

Once again, I love possessive/perverted Charles... and thank goodness he's not going to kill Clipper for bringing up the rapes. I wonder if Connor was awake during the doctor's visit... poor baby

Re: Master of the House - part 18

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Wow...so it does. :D HP!

Ahem.

But yeah, I wasn't too impressed with Church and, given that I wanted Matthew to be reincarnated Church...

Matthew is, unfortunately, one of the new members of the Inner Circle (one of the reasons why he's constantly switching back and forth using 'sir' and 'Charles' to address Charles Lee).

Poor Connor was awake the whole time (he's awake during a lot of the shitty stuff), but it's nothing he hasn't heard before (though he's still getting used to the idea that he's pregnant again) so he's quite used to this kind of...behavior from them.

he's not even a human being in their eyes.

Interestingly enough, many thinkers and armchair anthropologists in England at roughly that time (give or take a century) debated exactly that. One of the topics of debate was whether people from certain parts of Africa and the Native Americans were people. A sizable group wrote treatises on why Native Americans were primitive peoples (adam and eve types) and why people from Africa were not people. Another sizable group wrote the opposite. Some argued both were not people and some argued that both were.

I believe, but not sure since this is all going off of memory from history class over 10 years ago, a very large segment decided that the groups from Africa were not people and, thus, legitimized the type of slavery we saw in the US and in Europe.

Also, apparently, there was some questioning over whether either group (but particularly the former) can/should be converted to Christianity because apparently it was against the bible to take Christian peoples as slaves.

Well you definitely have reincarnated Church, and I bet Haytham and Charles are both wary of him, wondering if he would betray them to for personal gain. Connor was just fortunate to find people like Jamie and Doctor White, who obviously care more about their patients than profits.

Re: Master of the House - part 18

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I heart Jamie and Doctor White. I think I literally wanted to give them a hug when I met them in-game. Such truly caring people... :D

I actually think Haytham and Charles are less wary of Matthew than they should be. Because Church was made into an example, it'd be a warning to the rest of the Templars about what happens when you put profit over the Order. Haytham and Charles would be relatively off their guard because they would think that no one would cross them so soon after Church.

...though they would be right in that case. o.o So maybe they're the exact correct level of wary? :) Which would mean that they'd have him marked in the future for careful monitoring...
