Master of the House - part 31

Epilogue
Connor screamed.
“Push,” Doctor White cried from where he stood between Connor’s legs. “Push!”
Connor heaved and, with a sudden push, cried out sharply as the baby finally left his body, followed by copious fluids (and then other matter) that none of the room’s occupants cared to think about.
He breathed heavily, exhausted by the effort as a wail filled the room, the baby crying for its abrupt departure from its warm home.
Doctor White smiled from where he was holding the child. A snip to separate baby from mother and he cleaned the baby off with a gentle damp towel.
“Congratulations, Connor.” He placed the child into Connor’s arms. “It’s a boy.”
The door chose that moment to burst open, revealing a wild-eyed panting Charles Lee, having raced all the way home when Ronald had traveled to his townhouse to tell him that his wife was in labor.
“Is it, is it...” he stuttered, eyes fixed on the bundle in Connor’s arms.
Doctor White nodded.
“He is healthy and doing well. They both are.”
Charles let loose the breath he was holding and carefully made his way to his wife’s side. He stared wonderingly at the little boy lying against his wife’s chest, eyes still closed, tiny nose scrunched up, hair soft wispy dark fuzz on his head.
“He’s so small,” he whispered.
Doctor White laughed. “He’s a baby. They get larger.”
Charles hesitated, staring longingly at the child and, “may I hold him?”
Doctor White looked at Connor, and Connor nodded, eyes on his husband.
Hesitantly, tentatively, Charles leaned down and took the precious bundle from his wife.
“Oh,” he whispered in awe. “He’s beautiful.”
And so he was. Perfectly formed, tiny hands and feet waving back and forth in the air...
Connor watched as his husband stared at the tiny limbs in rapt attention, no doubt counting the fingers and toes as he had heard fathers are wont to do.
Charles looked back up.
“He’s perfect.” There were tears in his eyes. “He’s so perfect.”
And then his husband looked down at him, meeting his eyes.
He smiled and placed their son back into Connor’s arms. And he knelt by the bed so that they were at eye-level.
“Thank you.”
Connor blinked, looking at the man who had done so much to him.
Then he looked to the squirming bundle in his arms, at the small tired yawns as the little body stretched and wiggled.
“You are welcome.”
He wondered if this was what contentment felt like. And, if so, how strange it was that he should have found it.

I'll miss the lightning fast updates, but I can't wait to read Haytham Lee's story. Yusuf wants to know if he'll be in it... of if Charles decided to ship him back to the Homestead after scaring off his poms

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)Charles's subjects thoughts on the matter will actually be addressed in Haytham Lee's part. :) Let's just say that Charles had some agents busy spinning damage control and PR during the first pregnancy... 'cause I'm sure the people also wanted to know what happened to Washington, how he died, what happened to Israel Putnam and Sam Adams...
