(Anonymous) 2010-10-04 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)They had all read the reports, they knew what was waiting for them on the other side of that door, but when they got to the end of the hall there was a pause, each assassin fighting off the urge to backtrack through the hall and never have to see what was waiting for them behind that door, but finally after ten long minutes of tense silence Shaun gave up, sick of standing still while his fear ate away at him; he placed his hand on the door and pushed-
The doors swung open and Shaun stepped inside, the scent of rotting flesh assaulting his senses, but the putrid smell barely registered in his frozen mind, because his brain was still stuck on the images laid out before his eyes. Yes, he was an assassin, and over the years he had seen more than his fair share of death, and after all that, He had thought he had become accustomed to death, but not like this, never like this..
From somewhere far away he heard a female scream -Rebecca? - but his train of thought had been derailed long ago, leaving only room for anger, confusion, and terror to chase each other around in his head until one desire took hold- Run.
Feeling bile rising in his throat Shaun turned and ran bushing passed Desmond and out of the room, ignoring the cry of his name from back down the hallway as he sprinted around a corner, ascending a flight of stairs, not caring where he was going as long as it wasn't where he had been. But he was running blind, his confused and shocked brain to disorientated to keep him going at this reckless pace through the devastated halls, and it wasn't long before His foot caught on a piece of debris and he thumbed to the floor in a heap.
Lacking the will to move he just laid there, his skin cold and clammy, heart beating fast inside his chest. The images of the room he had just run from still flashing behind his eyes. There had been just under a hundred assassins and their families living at this farm. Men, woman, children, they had killed everyone. Then dragged there body's together to make- the image of a blood red cross burned at the back of his mind, the Templars attempt at psychological warfare that was as transparent as it was horribly affective.
Shaun rolled onto his side and fought back tears of anguish, his mind still to shaken to be angry, that would come later, in droves of hot white rage that would threaten to tear his soul apart, but for now there was only a deep unending emptiness.
The sounds of distressed crying reached the historians ears, and for a second he cursed himself for not being able to hold back his own emotions, but then the sound registered as being out of his own body and instead seemed to be coming from a little farther down the hall he was now kneeling in, the sorrowful sobs echoing in around the abandoned building.
The mournful sounds penetrated the walls of denial that Shaun had erected, and stirred his heart from where it had been flash-frozen in his chest. Slowly he found his feet, swallowing heavily to help keep his lunch down. Thankfully, he had been coherent enough to keep a tight hold on his gun throughout his breakdown and he checked that it was still loaded and ready, keeping His thoughts limited to his hostile environment training, to keep them from returning to the gym and its contents.
The first few steps were shaky, but by the time Shaun was at the end of the hall he had gathered himself up a little. Following the soft crying led him into a small room on the second floor; the door of witch was decorated with crude crayon drawings of houses, lakes, forests, and stick figure families holding hands under a smiling sun, the words “Ms. Akeley's second grade class” in bright red cut-out letters covered in an uneven coat of glitter, that were stuck with duct-tape to the wood above the doorway.
