Pearls Before Swine [1/?]
(Anonymous) 2010-10-17 11:21 am (UTC)(link)Giovanni had felt eyes on him all night, studying him, appraising him, slowly peeling away the white cloak that shielded his face from the crowds, but it wasn't until a stray glance fell on the Duke of Milan that he realized to whom those eyes belonged. Galeazzo Sforza was reclining in the seat of honor at the Medici's dinner table, a plum in one hand and a woman on the other. His mane of dark hair fell around his crimson and white doublet, framing the chain of crenellated gold that hung around his neck, opulent garnets and tear-shaped diamonds gleaming no less brilliantly than the spear of Mars. Before him, a veritable cornucopia of fruits and sweetmeats was spread, the result of weeks of preparation to welcome Florence's most important ally. Lorenzo had spared no expense, decking the large dining room with dozens of candles, and through the mill of servants, Giovanni could see the Duke slide a hand down the back of his consort, eyes never wavering from their gaze.
Galeazzo's hard lips curved into a smile, as he bit into the lush, juicy plum. Leaning over, he whispered something in the ear of his attendant, who nodded briefly at him and left through a side door.
Frowning, Giovanni shifted in his position behind Lorenzo's chair. Though he was in attendance only as an observer, his instincts told him to suspect every move, watch for every danger. He curled his fingers into his palm, stifling the urge to follow.
"Giovanni." Sensing his assassin's unrest, Lorenzo tilted back, hand touching the other's arm. "Are you sure you will not join the feast?" he asked quietly.
"I am here to ensure your safety, Magnificence."
A hint of exasperation twitched the otherwise smooth, handsome features. "You worry too much," Lorenzo chided, not for the first time. "Galeazzo is a friend, and the men from Milan capable soldiers. Guards are stationed all over my palazzo."
"Then let me add my eyes to theirs," Giovanni replied stubbornly. Looking up, he noticed the Duke's stare on him again, this time darker and more intense. A shiver of disquiet ran through him.
Lorenzo sighed. "As you wish." Releasing his assassin reluctantly, the young ruler of Firenze returned to his discussion with Galeazzo's minister about the trade routes through Tuscany.
Giovanni breathed a silent sigh and settled back on his heels, trying to quell the tension in his chest. Perhaps his unease was unfounded. After all, the Sforza were longtime allies since Cosimo's day, and Galeazzo would gain nothing by severing his chief source of funds through the Medici bank. The alliance of families was beneficial to both their cities. Even if somehow, the Duke of Milan planned treachery, he dared not act here in the center of Lorenzo's power, where the streets were lined with supporters of Florentine might as symbolized by the Palle. All of this, Lorenzo had assured him, and yet Giovanni still found himself unable to relax in the presence of the Duke.
It was not that Galeazzo was a menacing man - imposing, perhaps, and arrogant like much of his condottiere kin, but no worse than Mario after a few drinks. Giovanni would be surprised not to find these traits in a boy raised to be ruler. And while the Duke's appetite for sex turned heads, he could not find fault with a vice that he himself indulged in the throes of youth. No, what bothered Giovanni was the other stories about Galeazzo's past... the rumors of rape and torture, impulsive cruelty exacted on any who displeased him. During a visit to the ducal court, he'd been disturbed to learn that the Sforza scion had driven his own mother into exile after a dispute, followed not months later by her death from a mysterious illness. Lorenzo had merely shaken his head at the news, murmuring something about succession's bloody hand, but Giovanni kept his lip tight and his blade hand tighter when the Duke came to visit.
For in truth, the real reason he distrusted Galeazzo was simply because he detested the man.
