Kids Say the Darndest Things 2

(Anonymous) 2010-03-15 08:06 am (UTC)(link)

"We came to see the vampire." Ezio said with a sigh, knowing as he said it how ridiculous that had to sound.

The girl frowned, "You want to see a vampire? Then why did you come here?"

Ezio punched his friend on the arm angrily. "I told you a vampire wouldn't live here!"

"My brother..." Antonio started to defend.

"Probably just drank too much when he said that." Ezio said.

"No, I didn't say there wasn't a vampire living here. I just wanted to know why you would want to see him," the girl broke into the brewing fight.

"There really is a vampire living here?" Ezio asked wide-eyed.

"Well... yes." The girl paused at the excited looks the two boys got. "But he's not a very good vampire."

"What does that mean?" Antonio asked, frowning.

"It means he's a very bad vampire," she reluctantly explained.

"Can we see him?" Ezio asked excited, he hadn't really expected a vampire to be there.

"Why would you want to? He's kinda... boring. And weird," She added on after a moment of thought.

"But he's a vampire. A bad one!" Ezio stressed the bad part.

"But he..." she paused and frowned. "I don't think we mean the same thing when we say bad."

"What else can bad mean? It means bad!" Antonio frowned, a confused at what she could mean.

"Well it means..."

"Rosa? Who are you talking to?" A cheerful voice asked. "Oh, you have some friends over. You should have told me, I would have had snacks prepared." The man cheerfully scolded as he walked up and smiled down at the three children.

"They are not my friends!" Rosa snapped with a stomped foot. "They're trespassers!"

"Trespassers? Really?" The man smile dimmed a little at her denial of friendship. "What could you want here?"

Put on the spot like that by an adult the two boys clammed up with embarrassment.

"Come, don't be shy. It can't be that bad. If your thieves, I think I have something for you around here." The man started to wander off distractedly, only to be pulled to a stop by Rosa's hand snapping out and grabbing onto his clothes. "Yes, Rosa?"

"They said they're not thieves," Rosa said with longsuffering patience.

"Oh, then why would you sneak in here?" The man asked. "My workshop could hardly be that interesting to two such young boys."

Ezio, soothed by the lack of anger from the man, blurted out, "Are you really a painter?"

The man smile brightened and turned into a grin at the question. "Indeed. And inventor, botanist, engineer, architect, and well, a great deal of things. Would you like to see some of my paintings? Are you artists yourselves?"

"That's not why there here," Rosa said sourly.

"Oh? Then what?"

"They want to see a vampire. I tried to tell them that you weren't a very good vampire, but they weren't listening," Rosa explained with a sigh.

Ezio and Antonio stared wide-eyed up at the still smiling man. "You're a vampire?"

"Yes, for quite some time."

"But you're..." Ezio frowned trying to find the words to describe what he was feeling.

"I told you. He's a really bad one."

"I don't see why you think I'm bad, Rosa. I must be quite good to have lived as long as I had." He frowned down at her, before dropping the old argument with a sigh. "Come, you must be hungry. We will go have something to eat."

An hour later the four of them were ensconced in a cheerful but windowless room with a platter of finger food and glasses of juice. That was how Malik found them.

"Leonardo? What's this?" The dark man frowned at the cheerfully chatting group.

"Ah, Malik, come join us. Rosa's made some friends!"

"They're not my friends," Rosa snapped only to be ignored by the adults.

"Where did they come from?"

"Oh, they came to see me." Leonardo smiled at his old friend and guard.

"To... see you? And they are friends of Rosa's? Are you sure they were not sent as spies?" Malik scowled at the fascinated boys.

"They are merely boys. Who would send them to spy on me?"

"Must I remind you of Athens?" Malik said pointedly.

"They merely wished to see a vampire, and here look! They have now met two!" Leonardo turned a bright grin on the two boys.

Rosa nodded and confirmed, "Malik's a real vampire."

"I assure you Rosa I'm a real vampire." Leonardo frowned slightly at her.

"But you're not a very good one. Malik's more like what a vampire should be."

"And yet Leonardo managed to stumble his distracted way into what countless others have sought throughout time: immortally."

"I did not stumble," Leonardo defended. "I merely..."

"Accidentally turned yourself into a vampire."

"Well yes, but I was merely trying to help..."

"A wounded man, yes, I'm well familiar with the story." Malik smirked slightly at Leonardo's put upon expression.

"You're a vampire too?" Ezio asked excitedly.

"Yes. This one's," he gestured at Leonardo, "Childe in fact."

"Childe?" Antonio frowned at the word.

"He's the one that made me a vampire." Malik explained, reluctantly taking a seat at the table and steepling his fingers before him.

"Your hands are two different colors! How did they get like that?" Antonio asked excited by the oddity of the new vampire.

"Because I lost my left arm when I was still human," Malik explained patiently.

"It grew back after you became a vampire?" Antonio asked wide-eyed.

Leonardo laughed and shook his head. "Oh, no. We had to get him a new one."

"Luckily it was during the crusades so it wasn't that hard to find me a new one." Malik explained blandly. "It was rather bloody and painful but Leonardo managed to talk me into allowing him to try and transplant one off of one of the freshly dead Templars not long after I was turned."

Ezio looked at Leonardo with wide-eyed awe. "How'd you know it would work?"

"Oh I didn't, but if it didn't it would leave him no worse off than he was before, and if it did then he would have two hands again," Leonardo explained breezily, waving off the brilliance his idea.

"Wow!" Both boys eyed Leonardo with renewed respect. That was the kind of bloody story they had been hoping to hear. The afternoon passed quickly with the two vampires answering the questions of the two boys in their own ways.

"That sounds like you met two vampire," Federico said.

"Well yes, but I didn't want to spoil the surprise by saying anything sooner."

"And when did you meet these... vampires?" Maria asked delicately.

"Oh weeks ago," Ezio answered. "They know all sorts of stories. And Rosa's not so bad. She's almost not a girl."

"And Rosa is... Leonardo's daughter?" Giovanni asked.

"No. But she's Leonardo's. Malik calls her his newest stray." Ezio was happy to finally be able to tell his family about his new friends. He'd been waiting impatiently for his uncle to visit just so he could tell everyone at once.

"So Leonardo's a painter, what does Malik do?" Claudia asked wide-eyed at Ezio's story.

"Malik said that he's Leonardo's keeper, Leonardo said he's a friend that runs errands for him sometimes, Rosa said that Malik was something called a... hashshashin*," Ezio pronounced the strange word carefully, "and has been since he was human. His friend Altair too."

"Who's Altair?" Federico asked, all the children oblivious to the way the adults stiffened at hashshashin.

"A hashshashin friend of Malik's and another childe of Leonardo's. I guess that makes him like Malik's brother. He's not in Italy with them right now," Ezio grinned happily, "so I haven't met him yet."

"Altair? Really?" Giovanni asked with slightly narrowed eyes. "Any chance I could meet these friends of yours?"

Ezio nodded. "Leonardo insisted. He said if you agreed he could host dinner for us next Friday."

"I think I'd like that," Giovanni said exchanging a look with Mario.

*hashshashin: I looked it up; apparently that's how it's spelt according to wiki.

End... maybe.

Meet the Family 1

[identity profile] danyellaskyler.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the sequel to Kids Say the Darndest Things.

Meet the Family

The Auditore family waited curiously at the door of young Ezio's new friends. All week he had been telling stories of them to his curious family, unknowing all the while that the adults were gathering information from other sources as well. His siblings were just excited to meet a vampire, though a little doubting that he could really be one.

So it was with excitement from the children, and concern from the adults that a servant ushered them into the cluttered home and workshop of one vampire, Leonardo Da Vinci.

"The master is awaiting you in the garden." The servant started leading them through the house only to be interrupted halfway there by an excited shout.

"Ezio!" a dark haired, but finely dressed girl ran out of a room to hug her friend. "I haven't seen you all week!"

"And who is this?" Giovanni asked, subtly reminding the children as to the reason for their visit.

The girl flushed in embarrassment and pulled away from Ezio to curtsy clumsily at the gathered family. "Pleased to meet you. I'm Rosa."

"The pleasure's mine." Maria smiled at the girl, already charmed by her awkward, but sincere manners. "I am Maria Auditore, and this is my husband Giovanni." Swiftly she introduced her family to the girl.

"Is your father really a vampire?" Claudia asked, unable to contain her question.

"He's not my father, but yes." Rosa eyed the other girl, unsure how to treat her. "He's waiting for us in the garden. I'll take you there." Turning to look at the waiting servant she asked, "Can you get Malik from the library?"

"Of course." With a polite bow at the guests he turned to do as requested.

"Come on, the garden's this way." Grabbing Maria's hand lead the way to the garden.

"Leonardo?" Rosa looked around in confusion. "He's supposed to be here."

"Maybe he went to get something?" Ezio asked looking around worriedly.

"He's here," Malik's voice came from behind the family. Turning they saw the man stride past them towards a wall and look up. "Leonardo, come down from there."

"There's a birds nest here, with three eggs. I think they might be..." Leonardo distractedly informed his friend. The Auditore's were very surprised to see the brightly dressed man somehow clinging to the wall near the eaves.

"Leonardo we have guests and your being rude. Especially since your the one that invited them." Malik put a hand on his hip and frowned up at Leonardo.

"Leonardo! Come down here and meet Ezio's family!" Rosa snapped stomping up to stand next to Malik, unconsciously mimicking his stance.

"I'll be down in a minute. I just want to check..."

"Now!" Rosa stomped a foot. "Malik, get him down."

"As my lady wishes." With a graceful jump Malik grabbed onto the edge of the roof with one hand as he pulled the older vampire off the wall with the other.

"Malik, this really isn't necessary," the older vampire protested.

Malik ignored Leonardo's protests as he dropped them both to the ground and finally set Leonardo on his feet. "It's always something with you Leonardo."

Leonardo frowned as he dusted himself off briefly before leaning down and picking up his dropped hat. "I would have been down in a minute."

"You're minute's are other people's hours, Leonardo." Rosa said as she walked up and grabbed the hem of his tunic and started dragging him over to the wide-eyed family. "I'm really sorry about this. Leonardo's always to busy thinking to think."

"True." Malik drawled as he strolled behind the two.

"That's really not very nice." Leonardo protested.

"There's a reason you have keepers Leonardo." Malik nodded politely to the gathered family.

"You say that as if I can't take care of myself." Leonardo frowned at his friend. "Need I remind you I took care of myself just fine for centuries before you were born?"

Malik snorted and waved away Leonardo's protest with a negligent hand. "Not as well as you should have."

"You know, I don't think I've spent more than a week on my own since I made you a vampire." Leonardo frowned as he thought that over.

"Do you want to be?" Malik asked curious, not being offended by the slight rudeness in Leonardo's words.

"Well no, but you seem to make it a duty to spend time with me."

"Leonardo, you are a good friend, and that is the only reason I put up with someone as troublesome as you. Especially since you have a problem listening to your instincts, or more accurately, listening to the wrong ones."

"I've got quite good control of my instincts, and you know this to be true." Leonardo huffed in annoyance.

"Those are not the instincts I speak of. I speak of your need to chase birds in this case, kitten." Malik flicked Leonardo's ear to emphasis his point.

"I wasn't chasing birds," Leonardo protested with a slight flush.

"Rosa?" Malik turned amused eyes down at the girl.

"You were chasing birds," Rosa said flatly, "while we have guests."

"Kitten?" Ezio frowned, this is the first he had heard the nickname.

"It's a... thing." Rosa floundered, trying to figure out how much it was safe to say.

"My familiar form is a feline." Leonardo informed the boy brightly. "That is the animal form I can take, all vampires have one. Or at least my line do, I'm not sure of others." Leonardo frowned as he thought that over.

"You turn into a cat?" Federico asked wide-eyed.

"A caracal to be specific."

"And you?" Claudia asked Malik excitedly.

"Hardly." Malik turned a glare on Leonardo with his over sharing. "Is it really necessary to share this much?"

"Well they are Altair's line."

Malik gave him his elder a surprised look. "Really?"

"Can't you tell?" Leonardo looked at Malik startled that he hadn't known.

Meet the Family 3 (End)

[identity profile] danyellaskyler.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)

Malik eyed the family critically and scented the air before sighing and muttering something in his birth tongue.

Leonardo replied in the same tongue before turning back to the Auditore's and apologizing. "I apologize, we shouldn't be speaking so with guests."

"Altair's line?" Ezio asked with a frown. "You mean we're descended from him? So we're part vampire?"

"No, your ancestor was conceived before Altair became one. Your scent would be vastly different if you were part vampire, even from that far back." Leonardo shrugged. "Now I believe you came for dinner. I thought it would be more pleasant to dine out here and enjoy the evening air." Leonardo gestured to the waiting table.

"That sounds lovely." Maria smiled, falling back on ingrained habits. "Will this... Altair? be joining us?"

"Sadly no, he had to leave the country on important business, and left me with the impression that he would not be back for some time." Leonardo explained as the group seated themselves.

"What's he doing?" Frederico asked excited to here of this vampire ancestor he apparently had.

"That I cannot tell you, he didn't see fit to inform me." Leonardo spread his hands before him. "But whenever he leaves like this, especially when I have such a young charge, it's always for a good reason. All we can really do is continue our lives and try not to miss him."

Malik snorted. "I personally try to get some work done without the interruptions he brings needlessly with him."

"So you claim." Leonardo sent Malik a knowing look.

"Can you eat? Food I mean?" Claudia asked the two vampires.

"Well yes, but mostly for pleasure. We no longer get what you would from it. I personally greatly enjoy apple tarts." Leonardo explained.

"But do drink blood?" Federico asked.

"Well yes, but I don't kill when I do so."

"Why not?" Mario frowned in confusion at the strange man.

"I do not care for the needless killing," Leonardo explained.

"He makes for an interesting man to be friends with," Malik commented.

"I merely do not see the need to kill if there is no need." Leonardo defended. "Nor do you or the others kill to eat. Usually."

"But aren't you a vampire?" Frederico frowned in confusion.

"Yes, but killing our food source is rather short sighted so we usually don't." Malik explained as he linked his fingers before his face.

"Your hands really are two color!" Claudia exclaimed in delight.

"I told you that!" Ezio glared across the table at his sister.

"Children." Giovanni gave the two a look and quelling fight before it could start. "You are an interesting man with an interesting family."

"Thank you!" Leonardo smiled brightly at the man. "I'm quite charmed with what young Ezio has told me of your own."

What followed was a much more pleasant meal than the Auditore elders were expecting.
