Matchmaker - Part 1

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Again, I hope this is okay. I know it’s probably not exactly what you were looking for, but the prompt kinda called to me. I tried for funny, but it kind of veered towards serious at the end. Plus, you know, extra fail for the Bonus only being there if you tilt your head and squint. But hopefully it’s not too bad for my first fill here.

###############################################################################

Honestly, at first, it started as a joke, as a way to relieve their boredom and help with the stress. After all, being stuck first in the warehouse, and now in Monteriggioni, with the same, small group of people and a very few opportunities to leave would drive just about anyone up the wall. Add in the overwhelming stress that came from the fact that if they didn’t manage to pull this miracle out of their asses, it was the whole world that was going to suffer, and well… They needed some stress relief, damn it. Besides, Lucy firmly maintained that it was Rebecca’s fault. She was the one who’d had the idea in the first place.

Granted though, Plan A in Operation: Let’s See If We Can Get Shaun and Desmond To Make Out So We Have Something To Watch had been Lucy’s idea. Rebecca was convinced that was why it didn’t work. For an assassin, Lucy was surprisingly bad at being sneaky and manipulative. Really, how had she managed to fool Abstergo for all those years? So she wasn’t all that surprised when the plan crashed and burned before it even got started. All Lucy managed to get out was “Hey guys, how about a game of Truth or Dare --” before both men had shot her down. Granted, it had been worth it; it had been a while since Rebecca had heard anything as amusing as Shaun’s scathing commentary on the party game.

Plan B, however, had been Rebecca’s idea. Lucy hadn’t been willing to ask where she had gotten the aphrodisiac; they were supposed to be in hiding, not delving into Italy’s underground drug trade! After Rebecca had assured her several times that it wouldn’t hurt either of them - and how she knew that was another thing Lucy wasn’t going to ask - Lucy had reluctantly let her put the drug in one of her yogurt cups, because they both knew Shaun ended up eating them more than Lucy did. When they noticed a couple of days later that it disappeared after lunch, they were both hopeful. Well, at least they were up until Shaun approached them, looking perfectly calm and not at all bothered, and asked them if they knew why Desmond was currently throwing up everything in his system. Apparently, the something in the drug hadn’t agreed with the man. The girls had felt bad and proceeded to make sure he felt better as quickly as possible. Shaun, on the other hand, simply told him that was what he got for taking Lucy’s yogurt when he knew it’d be blamed on him.

After the first two disasters, the two of them had put their heads together. Locking them in a closet together hadn’t worked. It hadn’t really been a closet, just a sort of space enclosed with four walls, but with Desmond’s quickly developing ability free-running ability, he’d simply climbed out and then unlocked the door for Shaun. Sexually frustrating them had also been a bust. They’d managed to make sure the only “privacy” either man had gotten had been in the presence of the other and completely block all available porn, but Rebecca had cracked before either of them had, only making it a grand total of 25 hours without porn or privacy. “Losing” one of the sleeping bags in order to force them to share had simply ended up with Desmond curled up on the hard floor, shivering in his hoodie, until Lucy’s guilt had caught up with her and she had given him hers while she went and shared with Rebecca.

Plan F was another that ended before it got started. As soon as Rebecca had mentioned “shared near-death experience,” Lucy had vetoed that idea. Rebecca had seemed surprisingly disappointed.

Rebecca had been the one that put a stop to Plan G. Having a team dinner and then bailing so that it was just Desmond and Shaun? Hell to the no. That was just way too cheesy, chick movie.

They probably would have stopped sooner, but the planning was actually just about as entertaining as idea of actually succeeding. So they kept going and by the end of the week, they were already at Plan O. It was probably sad just how quickly they were going through plans here, but then again, this was Desmond and Shaun. Of course they were going to be difficult!

Plan P though… Plan P had been bad. Both of them had agreed on the plan; after all, if nothing else, it’d be interesting to see their reactions. Rebecca had been up first and it had been her job to confront Shaun. She had let her imagination fly as she spoke to him of what sort of activities she “thought” Desmond and Lucy were getting up to while “training,” and she had a hell of an imagination. They’d been going for jealousy. She hadn’t expected Shaun to kind of slump down on himself as he stared at his computer screen or the hurt in his voice when he’d spoken.

“Screw you, Rebecca.”

Surprised, she’d cocked her head. Apparently, Shaun had seen her confusion through the reflection on his screen, because he’d spun around in his chair, eyes hurt and kind of angry behind his glasses. “You know, I don’t get you. You or Lucy for that matter. You spend the last several days pulling these insanely childish stunts like you’re trying to get me and Desmond together and now you’re just going to turn around and rub in the fact that he likes Lucy? That the two of them would be good together? You know, bring more little assassin babies into the order. I wouldn’t have guessed you to be the type that would play with someone’s emotions like that. Or are you just oblivious to the fact that - surprise, surprise! - I am, contrary to popular belief, human and actually do have emotions?” Then, with a mutter about getting some air, the British man had walked out, leaving a stunned Rebecca behind.

That had marked the switch from Operation: Let’s See If We Can Get Shaun and Desmond To Make Out So We Have Something To Watch to Operation: Find Out If Desmond Likes Shaun and Get Them Together If He Does. For Phase 1, they opted for bluntness.

It wasn’t hard for the two of them to corner Desmond as he was coming back from one of his midnight runs around the city. Since the horrible failure that was Plan P, Shaun had taken to sleeping in the hallway leading up the secret entrance to their underground safe house, away from the rest of them. While it made them feel worse, tonight it was a blessing, because it was just about the only shot they’d have of talking to Desmond out of Shaun’s earshot.

“Do you like guys?”

“Wha… I don’t- WHY… What the hell, Rebecca?”

“What Rebecca is TRYING to ask is whether or not you’ve ever… You know… been interested in a… sexual relationship with a guy…”

“Oh sure, Luce, ‘cause that was SO much better than how I said it.” Rebecca turned her attention back to Desmond, who was staring at them, dark eyes wide and hanging partially open in shock. “So, Des, what about it?”

The young man just looked steam-rolled. “Was… Is this the reason you two have been acting so WEIRD the last couple of days? Because you think I’m… gay?”

“Of course not!” Lucy assured him. “We just-”

“Why do you ask?” Rebecca interrupted. “You’re not, like, homophobic, are you?”

“No. I’m bi, why would I be… Okay, why are you smiling at me like that?”

“No reason! Thanks! Night, Des!”

“Wait, why-? Okay… Whatever. Night you two.”

Phase 1: Find Out If Desmond Is Interested In Guys - Success.

Re: Matchmaker - Part 3 of 4

The next phase, Find Out If Desmond Is Interested In Shaun, was a little more tricky and required a little more tact. Rebecca grudgingly agreed to let Lucy take the lead on that one.

She waited until she and Desmond were alone. Down into the depths of La Villa Auditore’s escape tunnel was the perfect place for them to train, plus, it had the bonus of being somewhere Shaun couldn’t follow. No matter how good he was at fighting and killing - and for a historian, he had taken to those things rather quickly - he didn’t have the free-running and parkour skill necessary to navigate the decaying passages.

“So, Des…”She began slowly as she circled Desmond, looking for an opening. His fighting was improving rapidly as he absorbed more and more of his ancestor’s skills. “What sort of things do you look for in a partner? Guy or girl.”

Desmond’s guard dropped slightly in his confusion. “What? Why do you want -” Lucy took advantage of his distraction and managed to get a hold of him and throw him over her hip, landing him on his ass. “Ow! Damn it, Lucy!”

“You have to be able to focus on more than one thing at a time, Desmond. The rest of the world isn’t going to wait for you to finish what you’re doing before it carries on with its business. So… what qualities do you find attractive in a person?”

To his credit, Desmond kept his guard up this time, nor did he seem quite as flustered by the questioning. “Uh, smart… Won’t take any bullshit, I guess. Funny… Being hot’s always a plus. But I don’t see why it matters. I’m kind of stuck here for the foreseeable future. Being hunted doesn’t exactly lend itself to getting laid, you know?” This time, he attacked, getting in close and getting in what would have been a few good hits in a real fight before Lucy kicked out at him, driving him back out of range.

“Come on, Des. You’re taller than me. Use your reach to your advantage. You don’t want to get any closer than you have to make the kill. Not before you gain more experience. Too many chances for your opponent to get you.” She was pleased to see him nod and back up a little more, clearly calculating the difference between his reach and hers. “Well, what about us?”

“You?” He was flustered again, but this time he didn’t let it affect his form. “Uh, that sounded bad… There’s not… Not that there’s anything wrong with you. It’s just… We’re kind of stuck together. It’d be… awkward…”

Amused by the way he quickly jumped in to reassure her, she smiled. Signaling for him that they were done for the moment, she walked to the edge of their makeshift sparring circle, grabbed the two water bottles there and tossed one of them to him. Sighing gratefully as she opened hers and took a sip, she carefully sat down, crossing her legs. “So, is that the problem? You are interested in one of us, but you think this,” she gestured around her, “is an issue?”

He seemed to think about that as he took a sip of his own water. “Isn’t it? I mean… We’re kind of talking the end of the world here, if what Minerva said is to be believed. Given the situation, we can’t really afford any bad blood or anything between us.”

Lucy had to give him that. “So… who is it? I’m going to guess it’s not me, otherwise I don’t think you’d be talking to me like this.”

“What? No. I mean… You’re awesome, Lucy. You saved me from Abstergo and I -”

“Desmond?” she interrupted gently. “You aren’t going to hurt my feelings.” She was pleased to see him smile sheepishly. “So, Shaun or Rebecca? ‘Cause you know, Shaun’s into the whole…” she made a hand gesture that made Desmond choke on his water, “thing, you know?” At his raised eyebrow and the doubtful look on his face, she rolled her eyes. “Seriously? Have you ever SEEN Shaun?”

“That’s stereotyping,” he said, echoing the tone of voice Rebecca had used to call him racist when he’d been talking to Altaïr’s statue.

Lucy rolled her eyes and laughed. “I’ve also known him for years now. Shaun cares more about finding someone who gets his little snarky sense of humor than what gender they are. And well, given that Shaun is, you know, Shaun, that’s probably a good thing.” Desmond was quiet then, staring at the wall, thinking. Or at least, she hoped he was. It was possible he had zoned out again and was seeing people that she couldn’t. It was an unpleasant reminder that, despite how their isolated existence could sometimes fool them into momentarily forgetting, the world was going to hell and the cost of saving it would likely be Desmond’s sanity, if not his life. If it wasn’t for the fact that Shaun was perfectly aware of this, she’d think this was a bad idea that was only going to end in heartbreak. But he knew just as well as the rest of them and if he was okay with it then… Well, it was a chance worth taking.

“You really think he’s interested?”

“You know how when you two talk, how he gets more snarky than usual? And then, despite that, he’ll actually humor your attempts at a conversation for a couple of minutes before telling you to go away? Which, I might add, is a couple of minutes more than he normally humors Rebecca and I. Let’s just say, his idea of flirting sucks.”

A small, sheepishly pleased smile flickered across Desmond’s face, slightly curling his scar.

Phase 2: Find Out If Desmond Is Interested In Shaun? Success.

Phase 3 however? Well, she might be stuck sharing a sleeping bag - because the one they had hidden actually had disappeared now, to God only knew where - with Rebecca, who was giggle-snorting every time one of the boys made any noise what-so-ever. And dear God, she hadn’t needed to know that apparently Shaun was “bendy.” But she supposed that, technically, no matter how traumatic it might be, the noises she was hearing? Yeah, that was proof enough of a freakin’ huge success.

THIS. This bit right here made my day.

But I loved this! I really liked how their silly plan kind of "backfired" and turned into something more serious. I felt so bad for Shaun around Plan P. Glad it all worked out, though. :D

OP here
