Come After Me [Part 3/X]
(Anonymous) 2011-02-04 03:44 am (UTC)(link)Why him?
Afterwards, once they'd gotten back to the van and had gotten the hell out of Rome, it’s all Shaun could think about. Why had Desmond given him the hidden blade? It would have made more sense for him to pass it off to Lucy. Yes, he had admitted to Desmond that he had killed before - hell, they all had - but guns were his specialty. He wasn’t… He was actually pretty bad with knives or things like that. That was Lucy’s area. So why him?
Behind him, Rebecca was typing away furiously on her laptop. There wasn’t much she could do with it at the moment, but damned if she wasn’t going to at least try to track which direction Vidic’s hired men had taken Desmond. Unfortunately, reality demanded the use of a more powerful computer than the one she was currently using. Stopping to set up a new base so she could get the desktop hooked up and running though felt sort of like giving up. It felt like they were just letting him go.
You’d better come after me.
Not you guys. You. It was like Desmond trusted him to do it. Not the others. Not Lucy. Not Rebecca. Him. But why?
“Shaun!”
Brought out of his thoughts, Shaun blinked as look up to meet Lucy’s eyes. She looked concerned and tired and her hands were clenched tightly on the wheel. “Sorry ‘bout that. What’d you want?”
“I was asking if you were okay. Well actually, first I asked if you thought that safe house we about forty miles from here would still be safe to use, but you weren’t answering.”
“We should be fine,” Rebecca spoke up from the back of the van. “At least for a little while. Those guys seemed pretty focused on Desmond; it was like they didn’t even care about us. Plus, now that they actually have Desmond, there are other groups out there that are bigger priorities. Even if they are still tracking us, we should have at least a couple of days before they can pinpoint our location.”
“A couple of days? I should hope we’ll be gone and have Desmond by then. It’s kind of a situation that needs to be dealt with as fast as possible, Rebecca.” Shaun’s fingers tightened involuntarily around the sheath of the hidden blade. He knew he probably sounded harsh, but… Desmond was counting on him. Desmond trusted him, and he wasn’t about to let him down.
You’d better come after me.
“Look, I’m sorry Shaun, but there’s only so much I can do. Abstergo might not have my imagination, but they have better resources. While they might have problems locating us, it’s going to be just as difficult for us to locate them. I mean, we don’t even know what direction they were going, so it’s not like we can narrow down the list of possible locations. We have no idea how far they’re going or even what kind of car they were driving. At the moment, we have nothing. Finding them is not going to be easy, and it’s going to take some time.”
Before he could say anything, Lucy interrupted them, her tone leaving no room for argument. “But we will find him. He’s one of us; we’re not going to abandon him. And we’ll get him out of there. He’ll be fine.”
“In case you forgot Lucy, but you told us yourself that Vidic had decided that Desmond had - how did you put it? - outlived his usefulness. That’s why you called us when you did, remember? I mean, really, how do we even know they didn’t just kill him already and dump his body somewhere?”
Rebecca snorted. “That’s stupid. Were you paying any attention back there? They wanted Desmond alive. Why go through all that trouble to get him to go with them willingly if they were just going to kill him? They need him for something, and as long as they need him, they have to keep him alive. And they’ll have to be careful. Since he’s already starting to show signs of the Bleeding Effect, they’ll have to go slow. You know, to make sure they don’t burn him out before they get whatever information they need from him.”
It was true, he knew that, but it made him feel a little better to hear someone else say it. Desmond was important; Abstergo would have to be careful. That would buy them some time. Letting one of his fingers carefully trace over the straps of Desmond’s hidden blade, Shaun could only hope that it would be enough.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-04 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Come After Me [Part 4/X]
(Anonymous) 2011-02-05 06:53 am (UTC)(link)“God damn it, Shaun, I swear I’ll break your arm if you ask me that again! Do I look happy? No! It’s because I haven’t found shit! I’ll let you know when I do. Until then, kindly fuck off!”
He wants to snap back, can taste the retort on the tip of his tongue, but for once in his life, he holds back. He can see how upset Rebecca is and has no doubt she would break his arm and worse if he said anything else. He’s not the only one taking this hard.
This first thing Rebecca had done once getting access to her desktop was hack into the traffic cameras scattered throughout Rome, as well as the other various security cameras. Anything that could have IDed the vehicle Vidic’s thugs had used would have allowed for a quick trace and they’d already have already been on their way. Unfortunately, the guys were clearly professionals and not only had they managed to erase any footage of themselves that could allow Rebecca to track them, but they had made sure it was damn hard to even get names. Hell, Rebecca had, so far, only managed Squinty. Dmytro Golovnya, former member of the Ukrainian Marine Corps. Sadly, that was about all she had found. It was as if anything after the man’s fifteenth birthday had simply not existed. He and his men had, for all intents and purposes, disappeared, taking Desmond with them. Combine that with the fact that it had been two days already, and that they still had no real leads… They were all testy; even Lucy had snapped a few times. The tension was only making things worse.
Well, that and, for Shaun at least, the fact that there wasn’t really anything he could do. He had once told Desmond that he had the gift of being able to make connections, of being able to take facts, see how they fit together, and find truth where others couldn’t. But that didn’t amount to much when there was nothing for him to work with. Rebecca was the one doing most of the work, typing away furiously and staring at the monitor for hours on end. She had slept maybe four hours since they had gotten to the small hideout, and aside from that, had only left the computer for quick bathroom breaks. Even now, she had food shoved to the side of the desk, uneaten. But at least she got to do something. And Lucy was currently contacting every assassin team she could get a hold of, begging them for help or, at the very least, information. What could he do? Nothing. Not until one of them gave him something to start on. He couldn’t just create facts out of nothing. He needed a starting point, and it was driving him up the wall.
You’d better come after me.
Some desperate part of him wanted to yell at the voice echoing in his head, to make it go away or at least shut up. To let it know that he was trying. But he couldn’t, so that voice continued to haunt him, as did the look in Desmond’s eyes. Every time his brain turned its attention to that memory and started to analyze it - because that was what he did, he analyzed, and found facts, and truth, and there was nothing for him to do and he was desperate... - he had to force himself to focus on something else. Questioning Rebecca, preparing their supplies, cleaning and oiling his Walther P99 for the twentieth time, anything to keep his mind off Desmond. Because… Because some small, quiet part of his brain already suspected…
You’d better come after me.
With hands that he would never admit were shaking - for all that Lucy had gotten onto both him and Rebecca about needing sleep, he hadn’t even been able to manage four hours like Rebecca had, Desmond’s damned voice keeping him awake - he reached for the hidden blade again. It hadn’t been out of arm's reach since Desmond had given it to him. And even though he knew she was thinking it, he was grateful Rebecca didn’t mention that cleaning it and tinkering with it wouldn’t help anymore than it did the last ten times.

Come After Me [Part 5/X]
(Anonymous) 2011-02-05 07:35 am (UTC)(link)Shaun couldn’t help but stare at her computer screen and the faint, pulsing dot hovering over the small town of Lienz, right over the Austrian border. It was only about eight and a half hours away, less with the way Rebecca drove; they could get there tonight.
“How sure are you with this?” Lucy asked quietly. She wasn’t looking at the screen anymore, but rather at Rebecca. Shaun knew she was being realistic; they couldn’t afford to be wrong. Not anymore, not when it had been almost ten days. It could already be too late.
Eyes bright with exhaustion, Rebecca scrubbed at her face. “Honestly? I’d say about seventy percent sure. I mean, it’s not enough of a power fluctuation for the original Animus, but it’s about on par with Baby. And it just popped up nine days ago. The timing’s right. But other than that…”
“If it popped up nine days ago, why the bloody hell didn’t you spot it sooner?”
Clearly, exhaustion wasn’t enough to keep Rebecca from glaring at him. “Because fluctuations appear on the power grid all the time. They could be anything. But this one… This one appeared at the right time and hasn’t disappeared. Normally these things come and go, no big deal. I just happened to notice this one while looking up another possible lead. It’s… not normal. I just… I don’t know for sure it’s Desmond.”
It only took a moment of silence to decide. It was the only real lead they had and they were desperate. “Break down everything we absolutely need. Leave the rest.”
You’d better come after me.
We’re on our way, Shaun told the echo as he started gathering up their weapons, automatically making sure the hidden blade was the first thing he grabbed. So you’d better still be alive.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-07 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)It seemed… wrong somehow to have Desmond’s blade out of sight, but necessity demanded it. It simply wouldn’t be practical running into a Templar base carrying it around with his gun. And… he couldn’t really bring himself to put it on. It was Desmond’s now. So instead he carefully tucked the blade in the backpack he was going to have with him. They needed to be prepared for as much as possible, and carrying around a pack would help.
“Okay, so then, the entire compound will go through a massive system blackout. It’ll shut down their security, including those electronic locks. Granted, it will also let them know something’s going on, but it can’t really be helped. But anyway, the blackout will give us a chance to get inside undetected. We’ll have two minutes to get inside before the systems will restart.”
“Two minutes? Are you insane? There’s no way we can get Desmond out of there that quickly. It’ll take at least -”
“Two minutes to get inside. I have a separate plan for our escape attempt. We’ll have… fifteen minutes from the time the blackout ends. I can trigger my second surprise early, but I won’t be able to delay it.”
Lucy looked pleased. Well, as pleased as she ever had the past several days. “Good. We make our way through the compound to the room Rebecca highlighted earlier. I’ll take point; Shaun, you take the rear. You’re a good enough shot I know you can cover me without me having to worry. We bust in, grab Desmond, Rebecca will yank their hard drive and anything else she can get and wipe everything else, then make our way back out. Rebecca will trigger… her surprise and we’ll bust out. You’ve got their satellites and cameras on looped footage, right? They won’t be able to track us as we leave?”
“They won’t have a clue. The problems we had finding this place will look like cake compared to the problems they’re going to have.”
Lucy grinned then, a fierce gleam in her eyes. “Good. So, we’re ready to go?”
“Aside from the fact that our plan is grossly simplified and there are a ton of things that could go wrong?” Shaun asked. The plan was, in all honesty, ridiculously simple. Granted, that was good in that it allowed for greater flexibility when it came to dealing with unforeseen problems but… Well, he wished they had gotten the chance to go over at least a few more of those ‘unforeseen problems.’
“Twenty seconds.”
No more time for complaining. Shaun checked his gun one last time and adjusted the straps on his pack. Lucy had a knife in hand and, while currently empty handed, Rebecca had a pair of knives strapped to her waist, as well as a couple of her gadgets, assumedly for the second surprise.
“Ten.”
“Nine.”
“Eight.”
“Seven.”
“Six.”
“Five.”
“Four.”
“Three.”
“Two.”
“Here goes nothing.”
Suddenly, every light in and around the compound shut off. They had two minutes.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-09 02:06 am (UTC)(link)Lucy took the lead, quickly leading them through the maze of hallways. She never hesitated and Shaun was, for a moment, grateful to have her on their team. He'd have hated to have that focus and angry determination turned on him.
It actually took longer than he expected for the first of the guards to find them, but about half as long for Lucy to dispose of them with a couple of quick flicks of her blade. Being in the hallway as they were was kind of a double edged sword; only a couple of guards can come at them at a time, but the enclosed area meant they didn't have anywhere to go if they need to run. However, Lucy was taking advantage of the situation, leaving a small trail of bodies in her wake, while he guarded their rear. Without a silencer, he’d really rather not start shooting until he had to, knowing the sound of the gun would give away their position to any guards that hadn't already figured it out.
They were about two hallways away from the room Rebecca identified as Desmond's, given the strange readings it was generating, before he no longer had a choice. Rebecca had already pulled out her own knives and was slashing away like some sort of crazed wolverine, a noticeable counterpoint to Lucy's swift gracefulness but no less deadly. As they slowly pressed their way forward, Shaun was responsible for covering their backs and, while he might have told Desmond once that he didn’t enjoy the killing, this one time he couldn’t help the feeling of grim smugness that curled through him every time one of his bullets hit their mark. It was startlingly effortless: aim, fire, and watch the surprised pain flash across his target’s face even as he took aim at the next mark.
By now of course, the rest of the compound's guards had to have known where they were. Between the sound of gunfire and the trail of bodies, they might as well have been dragging a neon sign after them. It was rather like some of Ezio's earlier assassinations, from before he had truly understood the value of stealth. Perhaps that was why the Templars seemed so off guard, so poorly organized. They truly hadn't expected anyone to come in, guns blazing and making no effort at stealth whatsoever.
Come After Me [Part 8/X]
(Anonymous) 2011-02-09 02:08 am (UTC)(link)He took a couple of steps backwards to follow the girls into the room, unwilling to take his eyes off the hallway. It was their escape route and they needed it to stay clear so they could get back out. Instead of making it past the door however, he ended up running into Rebecca and Lucy. He was about to make a snide comment about the two of them just standing there like a couple of frozen meerkats, but their voices stopped the words in his throat, and his heart dropped out of his body.
“Oh… my… God…”
“Holy shit.”

(Anonymous) 2011-02-14 07:11 am (UTC)(link)The whole time they had been searching for Desmond, one of the few reassuring factors was the fact that Abstergo had wanted Desmond alive. That meant they needed him. It stood to reason that, as long as they needed Desmond, they would have to be careful with him. They wouldn’t be willing to risk doing something that would burn him out before they got whatever information it was they needed. It was the same problem they had faced when trying to find the apple. It was tough to balance the desire to hurry and find it with the need to go slow enough that they didn’t end up doing some serious damage to Desmond’s mind. The fact that Abstergo would have to deal with the same problem was one of the few things that had kept them hopeful in the ten days since Desmond had first been taken.
As Shaun turned around, unconsciously echoing what Lucy and Rebecca had said, he couldn’t help but think that this was nothing like what they had expected.
You’d better come after me.
Oh, God. Desmond’s voice rang in his head as he stared at the unmoving body strapped into the Animus. It was like an emergency psychiatric hospital. Desmond was strapped down tightly enough that he wouldn’t be able to move even if he wasn’t currently out of it. The guys that had been running the session hadn’t even bothered to disconnect him before they’d fled through what was clearly an access tunnel that they had managed to miss in their quick investigation of the perimeter. It’s just as well they were smart enough to get out when they did, because as Shaun takes everything in, he’s pretty sure he would have started by shooting out their knee caps and then slowly worked his way up.
Lucy looks like she doesn’t even know where to begin and Shaun can’t really blame her. He’s seen people’s entertainment systems with less wires and cables and other… things than Desmond is currently hooked into. He doesn’t recognize all the equipment, but what he does is enough to make him hesitate.
In addition to the catheter that hooked him directly into the Animus - apparently Rebecca had been off on how much Abstergo’s own Animus technology had increased - there were two others connecting to drips that had been shoved off to the side. A quick glance tells him that one is propofol and dear God, there’s no telling what sort of side effects are going to come from having Desmond under the influence of sedatives while in the Animus. The other says something about lipids and amino acids and glucose and it actually takes him a minute to figure that one out. When he does though, it makes him wish the bloody bastards hadn’t been smart enough to run, because he wants to kill someone. It’s a parenteral nutrient solution, and that almost worries him more than the sedatives, because that means that Abstergo hasn’t been letting Desmond out of the Animus. At all.
