I think Anon means more like, he was already playing waaay back when Black Lotus's were still affordable, or just got it out of a package! Though since Desmond is as old as I am, and considering I started playing Magic when I was 12, and we were in the Urca-cycle... it would be quite rare...

OP here. I could actually so imagine Des getting paid w/ a black lotus for something, like booze, or sex. Cause my head canon also is that Des is a serious flirt.
