His other arm snaked around Ezio's shoulders, pulling him closer into his clavicle. He was heavy not only with grief. The sobs wracked his body until late in the evening and it took all the artist had not to cry himself at how Ezio clung to him like a drowning man held onto a lifeline. It was not fair for someone who had been so kind to be so tortured by things he could not fight back against but life rarely played fair Leonardo had quickly learned.

“Be careful, Leonardo.”

“I do not understand. Is something happening soon?”

He couldn't make out the words but he didn't worry about them for the moment, “I will be careful though I do not know of anyone who would have business with an artist if not to ask for art.”

“Promise.”

Prometto, Ezio. I rarely leave my workshop most days. I will be safe.”

The grip on his shirt loosened like the man's mind had accepted his words as truth and they lay silently for awhile longer. He couldn't protect himself very well but he could protect Ezio's piece of mind to the best of his ability. For tonight this place was not a workshop-it was a safe haven, a sanctuary from the evils of the outside world intent on tearing the assassin apart.

“Everything will be alright, you will feel better in the morning,” Leonardo murmured, still stroking Ezio's hair, still trying to soothe him somehow but his words fell on deaf ears or at least sleeping ones. He sighed with relief-perhaps now Ezio would be able to hide from his demons at least for a little while. After placing a kiss on the top of Ezio's head he too closed his eyes. “Buonanotte, Ezio.”
