(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 07:01 am (UTC)(link)Everyday for the past week the hateful thing had shown him Solomen's Temple, over and over. It was like it was trying to show him just how much of monster he had been. It pulled at his fears, his regrets. The Apple showed him what had happened after he left. What it felt like for Malik to get stabbed in the arm. Made him watch as Kadar's body fell to the ground. Over and over, it showed him everything he had tried so hard to forget and over come. But, the Apple just wasn't going to let it go. It was a demon in golden covers and he didn't want it any more.
His body shook and he found it very difficult to breathe. Altair stumbled and slammed against the desk. His vision swam with tears and he tried to suck in air. But it was just too much. Another scream ripped itself from his throat as he gripped the desk and very nearly flipped it over.
"Altair?"
Malik's voice sounded from the door.
Undeservedly, the man sounded worried. Altair didn't want him, of all people to be worried. He didn't deserve it. He hadn't earned it. If anything, he still deserved the anger and hatred the other had once held for him.
"Get out," he hissed, clutching his stomach. He was doubled over and trying to stop the tears that threatened to fall.
"Altair, what's wrong?" Malik moved forward toward the man. He reached out and tried to grasp the other's shoulder, but Altair jerked away with a snarl. "Altair, stop! You need to breathe," he said, reaching for him again. Not allowing him to move away, he pulled the man against him and held tightly.
The great eagle crumpled against his chest, shaking, gasping and all out sobbing.
"Please, tell me what's wrong?" He asked, tighting his arm around his shoulders. "Please," he repeated when the man only cotinued to shake.
"I can't do this," Altair whispered, the voice broken and small.
"Yes, yes you can. You can do anything," Malik replied, soothingly. The man in his arms let out a sharp sob and pressed himself closer. "Altair, it's okay. Calm yourself. Everything is peaceful."
The next few minutes were strained and excruciating. Everything Malik said only made Altair more upset. The man would only shake and mumble vague curses into his chest. It killed him to think that the only person he truly loved hurt this much and there was nothing he could do about it. Nothing he did helped the situation at all. His heart broke inside of him at his own inability. He wanted to fix this, to keep those monsters at bay. But he was useless. What was he supposed to do? He had never been good with people's emotions, much less a full blown break down.
"Please, Altair," he breathed into the man's hair. "Please, be calm. I am here and I always will be." He squeezed his eyes shut not wanting to cry when the man in his embrace was still breaking.
Finally, Altair pulled in a deep breath. He released the back of Malik's robes and slowly sat up. Silently, he locked his gaze with the other's. His eyes were red and irritated but that familiar determination was creeping back.
"Malik," he breathed. His voice sounded weak and watery.
"Yes, Altair," Malik whispered. He didn't want to upset the man. His arm tightened slightly.
"You forgive me right?" He asked. His hands curled into the front of the Dai's robes, pulling at the fabric.
Malik frowned, not quite sure what the man was talking about. For a second he was silent, then it clicked. There was only one thing Altair constantly sought forgiveness for. Slowly, he smiled weakly and nodded.
"I have long since forgiven you and moved past it," he said, his voice was confident and sure.
Altair closed his eyes and leaned his head against the other man's chest.
"Thank you."
