It Grows So Cold, Feeling Like They Do 1/1
(Anonymous) 2011-07-14 09:34 am (UTC)(link)Malik looks at him sitting on his knees and his expression show's nothing. No empathy, no remorse, no care. Altair feels the dearth of emotions threaten to drown him.
He asks for Malik to help him, calls him friend, before he realizes that Malik is no friend of his. Realizes that every time he's offered his hand, it was bitten by the man's poisonous words, lacerated by the knife edge on his tongue.
The both of them have seen the world and learned to hate it, and in learning to hate the world, learned to hate each other.
Altair loves him and hates him, he regrets what he did, feels the weight of his actions, bares his heart in apology and is rightly punished with ire and venom. Malik tends to his wounds, but not out of care. There is no feeling in those cold hands wrapping bandages around his knees, and dabbing turpentine into his cuts.
Altair has climbed up sixteen church towers to try to see the face of a god that either isn't there or has no love for him. He's climbed sixteen and yelled at the sky, praying for forgiveness, until the roof archers noticed and took aim. And he says he'd do it again, only he's beginning to like the sound of Malik's jaded words.
Malik has razed his fists because he knows the feeling, screamed at him because he feels it the same and brought hell's wrath down upon him because they share these retched desires to wound each other simply for the sake of having someone to yell at.
It's so cold, the look in Malik's eyes. It freezes Altair at a single touch. Accusing, reminding him that no matter what he does, it's never enough to give back what he's taken.
Malik won't say anything of what he wants, he hints and lies but nothing more. He screams at Altair, tells him to get out before Altair can say that he'd give anything, always trade away his own scraps of happiness for a single ray of sunshine in Malik's life.
Altair grows so tired of these hateful words, wants nothing but to fix the hurt. It's never enough. His heart is breaking because all he gives is rejected and what isn't, is thrown out anyway. Like Malik could care less, but that's what he deserves, nothing more than apathy and loathing.
Yet, with every passing day, Altair feels as if the time he has to make things better is running out. And Malik says his word isn't enough, he has to prove his change. Altair tries, but all Malik gives back, is the sight of his back as he ignores every attempt.
It's never enough, when all Altair wants is to see Malik smile. So he makes himself an easy target for harsh words, Harsh words that bring a tiny, convoluted smile to Malik's face. Barely anything, but something. Something to brighten Malik's bleak days.
Altair would put his own heart on the die's counter if he could, and die happy, watching him smile. He'd always try to trade his life, wretched as it is, for that single ray of sunshine to shine in Malik's Life.
