La Volpe/Ezio
(Anonymous) 2011-01-15 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)Re: La Volpe/Ezio
(Anonymous) 2011-01-15 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)3. I ARE PROCRASTINATOR. I'll try to finish this
(Anonymous) 2011-02-14 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)He visited La Volpe Addormentata. At first, he was pleased at the welcome he received from his new allies. It seemed every thief in the guild wanted to play dice with him. But Ezio was having a run of exceptionally bad luck.
"That's another game to me, Auditore," said his latest opponent, stowing his winnings in his pouch.
"Indeed."
"Bad luck, Auditore?"
When he chose to, Ezio was good at infusing his voice with calm menace. "So bad, in fact, I thought I must have put on Borgia livery without knowing it. I notice that the guards have equally bad luck here."
"Ahh." The thief stood up, nervous. "It is late. I think it is time I went home to my wife."
"I think you are right." Ezio watched him.
"And my children. I have five."
"Congratulations."
"Thank you for the games, Auditore," said the thief, and bowed. Then, wisely, he disappeared.
Ezio glared into his mug of wine.
"Shut up, Bastiano."
He looked up to see three younger thieves, nudging each other and fidgeting.
"Game of dice, Ser Ezio?"
***
Later in the evening, La Volpe draped an arm across his shoulders and sat beside him.
"Listen, Volpe," Ezio said. "If you are going to rig the games, you must let the other man win occasionally. It's too obvious otherwise."
Volpe placed a fresh mug of wine before Ezio. "From the look on your face, Auditore, I suspect you did not come here to gamble."
"You are correct, as usual." Ezio swirled wine in his mug. "I need your help."
"Of course. My spies are yours, now."
"That is debatable," Ezio said. "But in this matter, it is you I need, and not your men."
"Ah? And why is this?"
"Someone is following me. I have yet to catch more than a glimpse of him - he is very skilled. He came close enough to... ah, to touch me, and yet I never saw him."
The strangest smile flickered for an instant across Volpe's mouth.
"Such stealth," Ezio said. "I must admit, I admire him. And that I suspected he was in the employ of Machiavelli."
"Machiavelli," said Volpe. "Pah. I do not like him. I do not trust him."
"Oh? I hadn't noticed."
Volpe gave him a sharp look, which Ezio ignored.
"Of course, there is no proof that this man is working for Machiavelli," Ezio said. "In fact, there is no evidence at all."
"Then, what do you propose to do?"
Ezio touched his elbow and drew him closer. "Tomorrow night, one of my contacts will come to an abandoned building not far from the Ponte Cestio. While I meet with him, you will find this watcher. He will surely be somewhere nearby. Now, Volpe. You must not kill him. I want to know who he is working for. Is it the Borgia? Machiavelli? Or somebody else entirely? If anyone is a match for this man, it is you, Volpe."
Together, they made their plans.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-19 09:35 am (UTC)(link)1. The List.
(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 07:32 am (UTC)(link)Some of the thieves of the Roma guild thought it strange that their master was sometimes seen to wipe down the bar, and even the tables, of La Volpe Addormentata himself. But under the guise of fastidious inkeeper, La Volpe found that he discovered many interesting things.
The list was one of these things. It was scrawled on a single sheet of paper, folded carefully, and tucked beneath a small barrel - almost as if no-one was supposed to see it. And that, of course, made it all the more intriguing.
La Volpe took it to his desk in his alcove behind the bar, and read it.
Lunedi. Piero - 50f. Pezzo di avorio.
Martedi. Niente.
Mercoledi. Emilio - 30f. Bastiano - Diamante indiano!
Giovedi. Bastiano - 26f. Pomodori.
A very mysterious list, indeed. Today was Friday, so no doubt the author of the list would be back for it, to make the fifth entry. Volpe pocketed the paper, and went about his business.
***
Sure enough, that evening young Bastiano slipped behind the bar and moved the same small barrel. La Volpe laid a hand on his shoulder and Bastiano jumped like a cat.
"What's wrong, Bastiano?"
The thief took off his cloth cap and bowed his head respectfully. "Nothing at all, guildmaster. All is well."
"Ah. You have plenty of tomatoes, then?"
"Ahh - what?" Bastiano wiped his forehead on his sleeve.
"Come with me." He clapped the thief on the back and draped an arm around him. "Perhaps you can explain something."
***
Volpe reclined behind his desk, while Bastiano stood in front of it, twisting his hat in his hands.
"I found something very interesting under that little barrel," said La Volpe. "A piece of paper with your name on it, my friend."
"Oh." Bastiano's shoulders slumped.
"An Indian diamond - twenty-six florins - and tomatoes. Illuminate me, Bastiano."
"Guildmaster, I -"
"Do not worry." A lifetime of discipline kept the smile from La Volpe's face as he watched the young thief squirm. This was most entertaining. "I despise a rat as much as you do." He pulled the list from his pocket and unfolded it. "Make no mention of the other names on this paper. I only want to know about the diamond and the tomatoes."
"I take all responsibility, guildmaster. You can see it is all my writing."
"I see. I commend you for your honour - but for what do you take responsibility, Bastiano? This looks like a simple scorecard. Is there a new competition? I'll put this up on the board with the rankings. In fact, I believe Ezio Auditore is here tonight." He gestured to the main hall. "We can ask him to join in." He stood up.
"No! Guildmaster -"
Volpe walked over to him. Face to face with the younger man, he gripped his upper arm. "Bastiano." He lowered his voice almost to a whisper. "Please explain this list to me before I grow impatient."
Bastiano held out his hands, palms up. "It's - guildmaster, he is convinced he is better than any of us."
"Who is?"
"Ezio Auditore. He is a fine fighter, but we are superior in stealth and cunning, any day of the week."
"Except Tuesday, apparently," said La Volpe.
"It was my idea," Bastiano said. "Some of the younger men wanted to prove they could steal from Auditore. We thought to make a game of it. It was just a little fun."
Volpe did not know whether to be proud of his men for their light fingers, or concerned at making allies with a fool. "You will find all these things and give them back to me." He shook the paper and gave it to Bastiano. "Throw this on the fire and be gone. I will speak to Ezio."
Bastiano nodded, but his face drained white with dread. Truth be told, Volpe had no intention of telling the assassin about his thieves' little game, but a few sleepless nights would not hurt Bastiano.
He tapped the young thief's chest and leaned closer. "And the next time I catch you - putting your name - on a list of things that you stole - Ezio Auditore will be the least of your problems. Go!"
He gave the boy a push, and he fled.
Oh, this would be fun.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)Ezio stalked away from the Rosa in Fiore.
Claudia was so stubborn!
He had tried to shield her from the ugliness of killing and scheming. If he could get away with having her bound hand and foot and sent to Firenze in a crate, he would do it.
Soon, the whole of Roma would know that Ezio Auditore's sister ran a whorehouse.
He decided to head for the Campagna and visit Bartolomeo's fighters, to work off some of his anger. It would be an unfortunate man who stepped into the ring with Ezio Auditore today.
As he crossed a piazza, someone bumped him in the crowd, and a sly, hard hand squeezed his backside. Quick as a snake, a finger slid up between his cheeks. He whirled, affronted, but saw only blank faces of citizens minding their own business.
It was not so unusual for a bored noble lady to pinch Ezio's backside, especially when he wore snug breeches. But not like that! It had hurt. And that finger had gone right up into the cleft!
He frowned in confusion. The incident had not improved his mood. Usually, the woman who had her eye on him would at least do him the courtesy of winking at him in invitation - otherwise, what was the point? He wondered if the courtesans were playing some sort of a joke on him, but the only ones in sight were lounging across the other side of the piazza.
It occurred to Ezio to pat his pockets, and he swore. Another fifty florins gone! That had to be the fifth time he'd been robbed that week. Of course Roma was full of thieves - but he had secured his alliance with La Volpe. There had to be someone else operating. He would have Volpe see to that.
He decided to talk to the courtesans. Perhaps they had seen this randy, thieving woman.
***
"Salute, Ezio!"
"Ezio Auditore!"
"So glad you could stop to talk, Ezio!"
He sighed. Courtesans. Much as he liked them, it was often difficult to extract much out of them except giggles and innuendo.
"Salute, girls," he said.
He knew Luisa - tall, red-haired, and a skilled spy. Two others he knew by face but not name; and the youngest, black-haired and tiny, was new.
"I hear your sister is to join us at the Rosa in Fiore," said the youngest. "She's very pretty. I'm sure she will make the place even more popular." She fanned herself and smirked.
Ezio caught her wrist and pulled her close. "If a man said that to me," he said quietly, "I would knock his teeth out."
She gasped, and looked up at him, lips parted. Ezio felt himself get hard.
"Then I suppose you'll have to spank me instead," she breathed.
Ezio let her go, ashamed of himself. He wondered how old she was.
Not old enough, he told himself firmly.
"Come now, girls," he said. "I am not in the mood for games. Which of your sisters took my money?"
"Every courtesan in Roma has taken your money, Ezio Auditore," said Luisa.
"I haven't," said the black-haired girl. "And I wouldn't."
"Good," he said, glancing at her. "You're too young anyway."
"I wouldn't need money." She looked straight at Ezio wih bold brown eyes.
He massaged his temples. "You want to watch out for that one," he said to Luisa.
"We try," she said drily. "Carlotta - enough from you."
Luisa lifted her skirts and stepped away from the other three courtesans. Ezio gave her his arm, as though she were a noblewoman. She patted his wrist. "Your sister will be safe in Roma," she said. "You keep the streets safe for us, Ezio. We will all watch out for Claudia."
"Thank you."
"This business with the thief - you have been preoccupied, Ezio, and it shows."
"What do you mean?"
"You did not see that you were being followed, did you?"
He stared at her.
"Followed? Impossible. I follow people." A creeping sensation travelled up his spine. He resisted the urge to look around.
She shrugged. "I caught only a glimpse of him. He was tall, and walked swiftly. Be careful, Ezio." She kissed his cheek and rejoined her friends.
Feeling thoroughly uneasy, Ezio walked away. He needed to catch this bastardo - before he lost any more of his money. Or his pride.
