As usual, this writer!anon can't seem to make anything happen without a fair bit of preamble! This is why I never finish anything... More to follow. Also, I needed some throwaway stuff for the argument so I ganked it off Wikipedia, sorry for any glaring abuses of history and/or game timeline.

"You said you liked Alfonso," said Lucrezia Borgia.

"I changed my mind." Cesare smiled nastily at his sister.

It was two hours since Leonardo had been summoned, at Cesare's behest, to the papal apartments at the Castel Sant-Angelo. So far, he had been ignored.

"I don't need your permission." Lucrezia's body was rigid with anger. "I will ask the Pope."

At this rate, the argument could go on all night. Some of them did. Hands clasped behind his back and face impassive, Leonardo waited with dignity at the rear of the frescoed chamber.

"Very well. Marry the Duke of Bisceglie if you must, dear sister. I wish you every happiness, and only hope that he does not meet with some unpleasant accident in the night."

"You would not dare to attack Alfonso!" Lucrezia said, her voice rising higher with fear and rage.

"I do what I like," said Cesare, and Lucrezia slapped him.

Barely blinking, Cesare seized her wrist and spun her around so that her back was to him. Lucrezia shrieked and fought.

Leonardo did not speak to the Borgia prince unless he had to. But he could not countenance this. He imagined what Ezio Auditore would do, if he saw any man treating a woman so - even the vapid, jealous, detestable Lucrezia Borgia. Well, whatever Ezio would do, Leonardo could not emulate him. Instead, he strode towards the siblings, reaching them just as Cesare forced Lucrezia to her knees.

"Cesare," said Leonardo, as though to a small child. "This is no way to treat your sister."

"You saw her! She slapped me. What am I to do - ignore it?" Cesare twisted Lucrezia's arm behind her back. She screamed and sobbed, but she had stopped fighting.

"Yes, of course," Leonardo said. "It is a shame your father taught you no honour."

"My father taught me only that I am completely unimportant to him in any way," said Cesare.

Spare me, thought Leonardo in disgust.

Cesare lost interest in this game, now that his sister had stopped resisting; but as if to show Leonardo that his intervention had achieved nothing, he gave Lucrezia a shove. She collapsed on the floor, shaking and crying.

"I do not need your moralising, Leonardo," said Cesare. He stood up, an unpleasant smile on his handsome face. "Have you completed my war machines?"

"No, Cesare," Leonardo said quietly. "It will still be several weeks before I have anything to show you. If you wish it, I would be happy to explain the plans to you again." That was the closest Leonardo had come to outright insolence.

"You had best watch how you speak to me," Cesare said casually, "or you will get the same as Lucrezia. Well, almost the same. I believe throwing you down would be an even simpler task than that was." He draped an arm around Leonardo's shoulders. "Come. Accompany me to your workshop, and show me what you have done thus far."

Leonardo made the mistake of looking back at Lucrezia, still weeping on the floor; and seeing her brother's arm around him, she shot Leonardo a look of special venom.
