Well then it would be right around the same time since Altair lived during the 12th century. So maybe he saw one and got the idea for it, that is of course if you don't go by the whole "The Apple showed him" theory of it. And he still designed it to be a lot smaller and faster then anything available at the time. So again; Altair invented a gun which was WAY ahead of its time.
