Looking Forward To Seeing [3/?]

(Anonymous) 2011-02-11 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
“So what do you do?” Malik asked. His knee bumped against Altaïr’s as the plane reached altitude and leveled off.

Altaïr made a noncommittal sound. “Ah, you know. Little of this, little of that.”

Malik snorted. “Oh, it’s like that, is it?”

“Could be.” He reclined his seatback slightly, feeling cocky, and there was a hissed curse from the person behind him. He apologized through the gap between the seats. “How about you?” he asked, turning again to Malik.

Malik shrugged. “I’d hate to have to kill you.”

They laughed quietly and got a dirty look from an old woman across the aisle.

“Can you at least tell me what you’re reading?” Altaïr asked. Malik showed him the cover.

“ ‘Cartographies of Time: A History of the Timeline’,” Altaïr read. “Sounds… interesting. Are you a cartographer then?” he asked jokingly but Malik traced the spine of the book with his finger while he thought.

“I guess you could say that.”

“Oh.” It was a lame response but nothing else came to mind. Drink carts were slowly making their way down the aisles and, somewhere, a baby was screaming.

Malik craned his neck slightly to see what he was reading. Suddenly embarrassed by his choice of entertainment, Altaïr closed the book and dropped it into his lap. A hand whipped out and before he could stop him, Malik was studying the cover.

“ ‘The Templars: The History and the Myth: From Solomon’s Temple to the Freemasons’,” he read dramatically. Altaïr propped his arm up on the armrest and ran a thumb over his bottom lip in frustration.

“Give it back. Please.”

“You don’t actually buy into that bullshit, do you?” Malik asked patronizingly as he handed it over.

Well-written, thoroughly researched bullshit, anyways.

“I don’t believe everything I read,” Altaïr replied simply.

“That’s good.”

“Would either of you like something to drink?” The flight attendant was smiling and the cart seemed to block out all other sounds in the cabin.

“Water for me,” Altaïr said, folding out his tray.

“Same.”

Tiny napkins, flared plastic cups full of ice, and bottles of water. Packets of peanuts. They thanked her and she moved to the next row.

Malik put in an earbud, looked out the window, and drank his water in silence. Altaïr could hear the music anyway.

_______________

“God, didn’t they just come around?” Altaïr grumbled as the cheery voice of an attendant grew closer. He’d been mostly asleep, having panicked half-dreams about Israeli stamps in his passport.

Good thing he had a spare.

“That was a while ago,” Malik said. He was hunched over his book.

“Good afternoon,” the flight attendant purred, locking the cart. His pants were so tight they probably weren’t up to code. “Chicken or fish?” He was definitely addressing Altaïr. And he had definitely just licked his lips.

Malik marked his page and leaned over.

“Chicken, thanks.”

The attendant cleared his throat and dug through the cart.

“Here you go, sir.” He plopped the tray down in front of Malik. “And for you?” He was staring at Altaïr’s mouth.

“Chicken’s fine,” Altaïr said. The guy had perfectly trimmed stubble and it was a little distracting because Altaïr couldn’t help but think that maybe the same level of precision was extended to less visible areas. And he didn’t really mind thinking about that.

“If you need anything else, let me know,” the attendant said, raising an eyebrow suggestively and smiling at Altaïr before moving on.

Lost in thought, Altaïr started on his pile of rice. He could feel Malik glaring at him.

“What?”

Malik slowly chewed his roll.

“What?” Altaïr asked again, more loudly.

“Nothing,” Malik said tersely after swallowing.

Something brushed against his knees. Grudgingly, he opened his eyes and found Malik leaning over him, his hands braced on the back of the chair, crotch inches from Altaïr’s face.

“Sorry, I was just trying to get out… This guy’s chair is so far back.”

One of his legs was between Altaïr’s knees. He felt warm.

“Do you want me to turn?” Altaïr whispered, still groggy. Everything was dark and he didn’t know where to put his hands. “Or should I get out?” He started to twist but Malik grabbed his shoulder.

“Wait. I think I’ve got this.” He shifted his leg over and nearly rolled into the aisle.

_______________

The sky outside the window was pitch black.

“You’ll like this one.” Malik sounded confident despite the whisper as he held out an earbud to Altaïr, keeping the other one in.

It was quiet at first, a tentative hum that reminded Altaïr of the fact that there was nothing but miles of air beneath them. Then a clear, ethereal voice. The language was beautifully lonely and unrecognizable and soon they were drifting off.

_______________

Altaïr jerked awake.

“Ladies and gentlemen, as we start our final descent, please return your seats and tray tables to their full upright position.”

He wiped the trail of drool from his chin and straightened his seat.

“Sleep well?” Malik was stuffing his iPod into his bag.

“Sorry, did I snore?” Altaïr smiled sheepishly as he stretched. Why did it always feel like the morning after when he woke up next to someone on an airplane? It was so weirdly intimate.

He folded a piece of gum into his mouth.

“No,” Malik assured him. “But you were really out.”

Altaïr couldn’t read his expression.

“Did you take a kidney or something?”

“Yeah, I figured you weren’t using both,” Malik said sarcastically. “I actually told you all about my job and my family and where I’m from. You’re much easier to talk to when you’re asleep.”

Altaïr tipped his head to the side, stretching his neck. “I’ve been told.”

“Probably not enough.”

It was true.

“So where are you from?” Altaïr asked. Everything felt a little rushed now that the plane was getting ready to land, like he had to make up for the time he’d lost while he was sleeping.

“I already told you.”

“Fine. I was born in a small town nobody’s ever heard of; it’s southwest of Aleppo but my family moved to the States when I was about seven.”

It was too much. Way too much. Malik just nodded.

“Not that it matters,” Altaïr finished. And it didn’t. Malik was looking at the expanse of water and houses and roads outside.

“Are you staying in Tel Aviv?” Malik asked.

“No, heading into Jerusalem.”

Malik nodded again.

“Are you?” Altaïr knew he was pressing but it held off the little tug of sadness that happened whenever people met and talked and left and forgot.

“Jerusalem as well,” Malik said.

And there it was. The moment when one of them was supposed to suggest splitting the cost of a taxi or whatever and then it was over. People were standing, pulling down their bags, and the busy ones were rushing off. Altaïr was usually one of them.

But he was lingering.

“Nice talking to you,” he said, and shook Malik’s hand again.

“You too.”

“Good luck with your cartography.” He couldn’t let go of Malik’s hand.

“Good luck with your Templars,” Malik said with a grin.

They laughed.

And then Altaïr was walking away.

_______________

He found it while digging through his pockets for the address of the hotel.

A simple but expensive business card- black background with engraved silver lettering.

Malik A-Sayf

An email address, a phone number.

Altaïr smiled.

Aww! This was really cute! I loved that it was just about two people meeting on the plane and nothing more, though I second the anon above me-- I'm kinda hoping to find out what happened next.

Thank you :)
Glad you liked it.

And I'm pretty sure that whatever happened next involved a lot of nudity and lube.

Thanks :D

OP Here!

Thank you, Anon! This was exactly what I was craving. The right balance of interest/disinterest, with an open end for more. You really hit the spot! My head!canon says that Ezio was the leering flight attendant.

I loved all the little scenes, you had me hooked from the chocolate croissants. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Please marry me. <3

Um, but in an attempt to be a little more coherent, this was just lovely and incredible and all sorts of wow. I actually snickered out loud at the "Definitely novices" line. And this made my heart ache just a little:
Altaïr knew he was pressing but it held off the little tug of sadness that happened whenever people met and talked and left and forgot.

I will be bookmarking this to read again and again in the future.

Absolutely BRILLIANT! This anon hates AU fics, but not this time! THANK YOU for writing such a wonderful fic!
Gonna reread again, and again.

Thank you! They're not usually my thing either, but between my love for this prompt and those amazing high school fills a couple pages back, I may need to rethink my position.

This was absolutely fantastic :) I love these sorts of fics, where it's a series of little events, and just, relatively normal I guess. Sometimes they're just as effective, or more so, than big fics with complex plots and whatever else.

They're so much fun to write.

Oh my god, when Altaïr said, "I don't believe anything I read," I SQUEED. Nothing is true! Gah! I love how you threw that in there! It was really well written, and charming. I wish there was more, to see if Altaïr goes to see Malik again and stuff. :)

Haha. It's quite amusing when the word "novice" comes out of Altair's mouth.

And I concur with the idea that a sequel is plausible here.
