To Keep the Peace [1/2]
(Anonymous) 2011-02-17 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)~
Dana loved her brother. It was the only reason she ever put up with all his crap. If anyone else had tried half of what Alex pulled on her she would have thrown them to the curb in a heartbeat. By force, because --contrary to what Alex thought-- she was badass enough to take on anyone who didn't have military level training, the ability to bench press a car, or guns. Not that he ever gave her the chance to show him that as obsessed as he was about keeping her safe.
She loved Alex, loved him dearly, but sometimes he was just too much to deal with.
Alex was an over-protective big brother who'd been secretly born female and was suffering through PMS. Constantly. Dana cramped up something awful every month and was more than willing to take it out on the world at large, but her brother had her beat in the bitchiness department. He always had, and now it was worse. How? She really didn't know and she really didn't want to know. Her expertise was not in biology. She just had to sit there and deal with it. Sure, his temper wasn't ever really aimed at her but she still had to deal with the mood swings from hell.
Up and down, left and right, and every other way in between. Alex's emotions switched so fast a Mexican soap actress would be jealous. There wasn't a single psychologist in the world who'd be able to follow it let alone diagnose it. Dana had long ago given up trying to figure out exactly what was wrong with him and got through the days by treating the symptoms. With alcohol, because after her third beer she was usually tipsy enough to find Alex's moodiness funny instead of annoying as all hell.
Alcohol, miracle drug that it was, only went so far though. Eventually it was too much for even Jose, Jim, and Jack to handle. It was a miracle that it took her three months to lose it on him and demand to be taken into civilization for some genuine human interaction. She also might have threatened him with an empty bleach bottle, but that might have been the tequila she'd retreated into messing with her memories.
Dana had regretted the words she used the next day, as it was readily apparent that she'd hurt Alex with them. But the point remained. She needed a break. She needed to talk to other people, to bitch and complain without worrying about setting off some violent moodswing. She needed an outlet that wasn't her own brother or the four walls of the room she slept in.
She got it. Surprisingly quickly.
Where Alex had met these people and why they'd agreed to hide them for a few days was never explained to her. To be honest, she didn't care enough to ask. It was social interaction that didn't come in the form of 13-year-old boys trying to cyber her in a chat. And Dana was desperate enough to take it wherever she could find it. So, despite the oddness of spilling her guts to two complete strangers, the uncomfortableness of the gym mats they sat on, the drafty breeze of the warehouse, and the metallic aftertaste of the half-melted icecream; Dana was almost deliriously happy.
Rebecca sputtered around her spoon, letting loose a fit of laughter that shook her frame. Lucy snorted into her hand, blue eyes fairly dancing with the laughter she kept in check. Dana grinned at them both. Feeling the tension she'd been carrying far too long finally start to uncurl.
"It's true," she swore, jerking her thumb back towards what used to be a series of offices on the other side of the warehouse, and was converted into a workspace. Now occupied by the men who'd been told to stay put or else. "I even threw a bottle of Midol at him once and refused to speak to him until he took the whole bottle. It didn't help at all."
"I did that once," Rebecca said with a sly smile. She scrapped the carton with her spoon, getting the last dregs of the melted goo into her bowl. "Except, I ground an entire bottle up and laced the sugar with it."
"What?" Lucy lost her smile quickly and looked at Rebecca in obvious alarm. "When did you do this?"
To Keep the Peace [2/2]
(Anonymous) 2011-02-17 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)"Oh, well that's alright then," the blonde woman grinned this time patting Rebecca's foot. "So did it work on him at all?"
"Hell no," Rebecca rolled to face Dana, "he might not be as bitchy as your big brother, but he's twice as vocal about it. Especially when he gets on a roll about something."
Dana could easily believe it. It wasn't often that she'd met a person who, despite knowing what Alex could do, would willingly provoke and taunt him. Constantly, because Alex wasn't the type of man to back down from anything and that included staying out of verbal flaying range of the British man.
"It's a guy thing, isn't it?" Dana tilted her bowl watching the liquid paint the bottom in interesting shapes. "If they're not fighting, they have to be asses. You think it's something genetic or are they taught that?"
"Genetic," Rebecca and Lucy chimed in immediately.
They all laughed at that lapsing into silence that was comforting and not the strained kind Dana had been dealing with for too long. All the tension and frustration was gone, she'd ranted it all out to the other women in five minutes flat and felt great. It was once again possible for her to live with her brother without wanting to smash heads in. She should probably tell him that to save Shaun's life if nothing else.
Or she could just sit around and talk a while longer.
"So, speaking of Shaun. I'm thinking he," Dana waved her hand in front of her and didn't finish the sentence.
Rebecca's eyes gleamed as she shot up, "Oh yes he is!"
Dana relaxed back as the gossiping began. A few more hours couldn't hurt much after all.
