Act Two 4/8
(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 06:44 am (UTC)(link)“He is here,” Ezio whispers. “At the gates.”
Leonardo cannot see through the fog, but soon hears Cesare calling his name.
“What color?” he repeats.
“Red.”
Leonardo is missing something key, he is sure of it. “Why? What has Cesare –?”
Ezio shushes him, and in the silence Leonardo can hear footsteps.
“There is no time to explain now; if he sees you with me you will be in danger,” Ezio places a soft kiss on his lips. “I will find you before he takes you away again, and I promise, Leo, you will know everything.”
He turns and disappears into the mist, and Leonardo doesn’t have enough spare brainpower to form a farewell.
Ezio called him Leo.
- - -
“Leonardo!”
Cesare fumes as he searches. He had thought they had heard the last of il Fantasma, only to have this happen. Well he will not stand for it.
This new opera of his will be Cesare’s chance to end it. Il Fantasma will certainly attend the premiere of his own work, in the private box he has so insisted upon. With guards at all the exits, Cesare can easily trap him inside the theater.
He sees Leonardo’s silhouette up ahead. How will Leonardo figure into his plan? Il Fantasma seems quite possessive of him, infatuated, even. No, the curtain cannot go up without Leonardo. But if the sentiment is returned . . .?
Regardless, Leonardo will not perform if he knows he is bait for a trap. He will have to be ignorant of the trap until it has sprung.
Leonardo is barely intelligible when Cesare brings him to the carriage –the shock of the events at the ball, Cesare assumes – which is fine by him; it gives him further time to perfect his plan. Perhaps, when it succeeds, a fire can accidentally burn the place to the ground – after Cesare and Leonardo are well away, of course. It can be a quiet affair, with no one the wiser as to who to charge. Yes, Cesare can see his plan unfolding perfectly.
After all, it worked at Monteriggioni.
- - -
Leonardo has not heard from Ezio in a month.
Granted, it is probably not his fault. Every moment of every day Leonardo is either at rehearsal or with Cesare, who seems to have doubled his efforts to hold Leonardo’s attention. Yet since that letter from Roma named him Captain General – of the Papal armies, no less – all he can talk about are military strategies. Admittedly, they are somewhat interesting to Leonardo at first; he even comes up with some ideas for machines to aid in tactics, but soon he realizes just how much Cesare seems to enjoy the thought of making bloodshed more efficient, and limits his input from that point forward.
Yet Cesare is persistent, and often tries to engage Leonardo in discussion. Leonardo finds that he is never alone for very long. It is almost unbearable.
The night of the premiere, a small mannequin appears in his dressing room, one wooden hand on its chest where its heart would be. Leonardo’s smile is genuine for the first time in weeks.
- - -
Act Two 5/8
(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 06:48 am (UTC)(link)A second Don Juan stands before him, clothed exactly the same as Alfonso. But after the sudden appearance at the ball there can be no mistaking the golden eyes under the cowl.
Il Fantasma holds a finger to his lips, and Alfonso tries to nod enthusiastically without impaling himself on the blade. Satisfied, the owner retracts his blade and smiles, which does nothing for Alfonso’s nerves.
His captor releases him and points to the ground firmly. The message is clear. Stay here. Alfonso doesn’t move a muscle as il Fantasma sweeps around him and onto the stage.
- - -
Leonardo notices the change instantly, but does not falter. If this is the only chance he will have to see Ezio before leaving for Roma, he’ll take it.
Ezio begins the song, and suddenly nothing else matters.
- - -
Alfonso is dumbstruck. Leonardo must not know of the switch! He hasn’t seen the eyes!
He takes a deep breath and forces himself to move. Slow step by slow step, he reaches the edge of the stage, just out of sight.
Leonardo is singing with him, held against his chest. How can he not know, Alfonso thinks, so close to this monster and yet so innocent to his true intentions! He can only imagine what sins il Fantasma has in store for him. He must save Leonardo!
And so it is with only the best of intentions that Alfonso rushes center stage and rips the hood from his head.
- - -
Act Two 6/8
(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 06:51 am (UTC)(link)Ezio turns on Alfonso, blade extended, but he has already dashed back into the wings. Maria is there, and her lips form one word.
Figlio.
“Kill him!”
Ezio looks into the audience to see Cesare standing in his private box, screaming orders, though his eyes never leave Ezio’s face.
He can see guards pushing through the cast on either side of him, blocking the exits.
“Ezio!” Maria calls, and pulls a lever, opening the stage’s main trapdoor, barely a step from him. “Ezio, go!”
Ezio detonates his third smoke bomb, and is about to jump when a hand grabs his.
“Not without me you don’t,” Leonardo says from within the smoke. He shines bright blue in Ezio’s vision, his mouth set in a determined line.
Ezio squeezes his hand, and together they jump into the darkness.
- - -
They are up and running again in seconds.
Brushing the hay (how is that even there, really, it serves no other purpose) from his face with his free hand, Leonardo is pulled through the darkness by the other. Ezio’s second sight is leading them down, further below the opera.
“Now that Cesare knows I am here, it is not safe,” Ezio says as they descend. “Cesare was the one who burned down Monteriggioni, but not before his troops slaughtered everyone inside. Maria, Claudia, and I managed to escape through the catacombs. I had gone back to search for more survivors when they lit the fire. The house collapsed around me and I barely escaped with my life.”
He stops. They have reached his home. Ezio turns, and Leonardo takes in the scarred face, the ridges of red skin radiating from his right ear across his forehead and cheekbones. Only his eyes remain untouched. “When I made it to the nearest town, they thought me a demon,” he says, pain in those eyes. “When I found Maria and Claudia here, I was afraid they would think the same. So I stayed hidden.”
Leonardo remembers the morning when he had seen Ezio for the first time. He lies to himself if he thinks the idea of something less than human did not occur to him. But he does not think that now; he knows better.
“You are no demon,” he says, and brings their lips together. Ezio’s arms wrap around his waist and pull him closer.
He has no idea how long they stand there, only that it is too short. Behind him, Leonardo hears the slide of metal on metal.
“Let him go,” Cesare hisses. “Auditore.”
- - -
Act Two 7/8
(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 06:55 am (UTC)(link)Ezio releases his grip and takes a step back. Leonardo looks from him to Cesare in confusion.
“Come here, Leonardo,” Cesare orders, his eyes never leaving Ezio.
“One should always have the freedom to choose,” Ezio says so only Leonardo can hear.
Leonardo looks at him, and then nods in understanding. He turns to Cesare, and Ezio fists clench, but he makes no move to stop him. It is his choice to make.
Leonardo regards Cesare for a moment before speaking.
“Vai a farti fottere,” he says with conviction.
Cesare’s anger flashes across his face before he regains his composure. “I would rather have had accept voluntarily,” he says, and pulls a gun from his side. “Now then: Leonardo, come here or your little Auditore dies.”
- - -
“You will kill me either way,” Leonardo hears Ezio say behind him.
Cesare’s lips curl. “Perhaps, but there is a chance I will not.” He addresses Leonardo. “Do you want to take that risk?”
Leonardo tries to think of something, anything, to give in exchange for Ezio’s life. He could not offer his own; Cesare wanted him alive, and would never accept.
Why did he need Leonardo alive?
“Leonardo,” Cesare interrupts his thoughts. “You try my patience. Make your choice.”
The machines. “War machines,” he says aloud.
Cesare’s eyes narrow. “What of them?”
Leonardo swallows, and takes a chance. “I-I will build them for you, if Ezio lives. If not, I take the designs to my grave.”
Cesare smirks. “I can build them without you.”
“Can you?”
Cesare is still, and Leonardo knows he guessed right. He keeps his eyes locked with Cesare’s, refuses to back down from his threat.
It is Cesare who finally turns away to sheath his sword. “Your service for his life?” he asks.
“Yes,” Leonardo breathes.
Cesare inclines his head. “Done. But on my terms.” He glares at Ezio. “Should I ever see you again, Ezio, Leonardo will burn with you. Do not interfere.”
Ezio looks about to argue, but at the look on Leonardo’s face nods slowly in agreement, the cords in his neck tight from restraint. Suddenly he turns to the stairwell, where footsteps and voices begin to echo from above. “A mob is coming,” he says, and turns to face Cesare. “Take Leonardo on the gondola, across the lake. From that side there is a tunnel out. Leonardo will show you.”
Cesare nods. “Leonardo,” he beckons, and Leonardo follows him to the boat.
As they leave, Leonardo hears a steady waltz, and turns behind them.
Ezio is standing by the organ, its keys moving on their own. His eyes follow Leonardo, and he places his fist over his heart. It is a promise.
- - -
Act Two 8/8
(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 06:59 am (UTC)(link)The footsteps on the stairwell are getting closer, and Ezio makes for the mirror that leads to the cemetery. He is nearly gone when he hears her.
“Ezio.”
Maria stands behind him, Claudia at her side. She approaches him with deliberate steps. “My son,” she says, and holds him close. Ezio’s arms close uncertainly around her back.
Claudia looks around his home. “Ezio, where is Leonardo?”
“Cesare took him,” he says through clenched teeth. “To Roma.”
Maria releases him, but puts one of her hands in his. Claudia takes the other.
“Then we go to Roma as well,” she says decisively.
“La Isola Tiberina,” Maria suggests. “Your father – the Brotherhood – once kept it as a hideout.”
“Brotherhood?” Ezio and Claudia echo.
Maria smiles knowingly. “You have much to learn, my children. We have hidden long enough; it is time you knew why. But first, to the isola.”
Ezio takes one last look at the lake before following them through the mirror.
Hold on Leo. You will be free soon.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 10:40 am (UTC)(link)Re: Act Two 8/8
(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)Okay, *ahem*, let me try that again. This was fabulous. I really enjoyed how you blended the Phantom of the Opera with the AC universe. For a first fill, this was very impressive and I hope you'll continue to write more! The meme could use more writeranons. :D
There is too much about it that I loved to point out everything but so many little things added up to make this so wonderful. Leonardo flickering from red to blue, the moment in the cemetery when they kiss, Cesare's wicked plans, the little mannequin with its hand over its heart...on and on. I've read it a couple times and the only critique I have is below. Aside from that, the only thing lacking is a sequel! (I do hope you'll write one because Ezio needs to save his man from Cesare's enslavement.)
I did have one tiny question. What do you mean by "carding"? It was used in part one of Act Two: Cesare hums, carding his hand through Leonardo’s hair. I've seen it used before but only on the kink meme and I wasn't aware it could be used in that context. No one has ever pointed it out in other fics, though, so maybe I'm missing something? That was the only thing that caught my attention and really, it's a tiny thing that in no way detracted from my adoration of this fic. <3
Re: Act Two 8/8 (Writeranon)
(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)Not a full sequel - it's going to be kind of an explanation as to how Leo ends up on Tiber Island at the end of Brotherhood - but an epilogue/mini-sequel in the works. Thank you for the high praise; I really enjoyed writing this and will definitely keep filling others if I get an idea.
"Carding." Er . . . actually, I think I used it wrong. The Internet defines it as "To comb out or brush with a card." I only sort of knew what it meant from context in other fics/books. I thought it meant that preening motion when people run their fingers through their hair, but it looks to be a little more specific than that. Lesson learned: look up words that I steal from other places. Thanks for pointing that out!

Act Three 1/2
(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 05:29 am (UTC)(link)- The Rescue –
Leonardo hasn’t slept in the two days and nights since he last spoke to Ezio, on a bench in Roma. Nothing between them has been private since that night at the opera, and it has nearly driven him mad, but not knowing if he is alive or dead would be even worse. Leonardo hopes the parachutes are being useful.
I will free you from your service soon, Leo, Ezio had said. The Borgia will fall. But Leonardo is worried Ezio has taken on far too strong an enemy. As talented as he is, Ezio is only one man.
Then Ezio tumbles through the workshop door.
Leonardo rushes to him – er, her. “Ezio” is really only dressed like Ezio – exactly like Ezio, it seems – and upon standing she is much shorter.
She dusts herself off. “Messer Leonardo?” she asks.
“. . . Sì?”
She nods. “This way, please.”
Leonardo has learned to be cautious; clothes can be bought, names can be learned. “To where?”
She stands up a little straighter. “La Isola Tiberina,” she says proudly. “We are here to take you home, Leonardo.”
“Home? But I have never – wait, we?”
On cue, another Ezio copy appears at the door. “Adele! Cesare and Ezio have left! We don’t have much time before the guards regroup!”
Leonardo’s heart jumps into his throat. “Ezio is here?” he croaks.
Adele pulls at his arm. “Il Mentore can take care of himself. Messere, we have to go!”
Il Mentore? Ezio has apprentices now?
Leonardo follows them out, along the fortification of the Castel Sant’Angelo, until a third Ezio copy peeks out from a doorway.
“Up here!” he says, ushering them in. As they go up a flight of stairs, Leonardo wonders just how many of these little apprentices Ezio has.
On top of the wall Leonardo can see the main gate into the castel is in chaos. Borgia guards – alive and dead – are everywhere. Leonardo catches a flash of white – Ezio? Or another assassin? He cannot tell.
Adele taps his shoulder. “Messere, are you ready?”
Leonardo looks down and the bottom drops out of his stomach. On the castel’s moat – way, way down there – are two tiny gondolas with two more miniature Ezios in them. The two who infiltrated the castel with Adele have already jumped, controlling their descent with Leonardo’s parachutes. A small part of him raises its hands in triumph at his invention’s success.
The rest of him is staring with horror at the cloth in Adele’s hands.
“Do you know how to fly it?” she asks.
Leonardo grimaces. “In theory. . .”
Adele gives him a confident, understanding smile, and Leonardo relaxes a fraction as she holds one handle and gives him the other. Having an experienced copilot will make things easier. “But I have never used one myself,” he finishes.
“Really? What a coincidence, neither have I!” she says cheerily, and before any protests can be made she jumps, pulling a screaming Leonardo off the rampart.
The half second of freefall is the most terrifying moment of Leonardo’s life, and just as he thinks that their parachute has failed, it catches the air, gliding down at an angle from its unbalanced weight. But the gondolier Ezios are quick and one manages to position the boat so that Leonardo and Adele crash into it rather than the waters of the Tiber.
Adele gives a shout of triumph as she takes the now-ruined parachute and tosses it over the side. “That was amazing!”
Leonardo is too stunned to offer a retort.
They glide along the river in silence – well, almost silence. Adele is still whispering rapidly about how wonderful Leonardo’s invention is and how Ezio told them about the flying machine and can he make one for her, pretty please? Leonardo isn't really paying attention. He can hear shouts of “Assassino!” in the distance, but cannot see Ezio from the river. Yet the shouts confirm that he is still alive, and that is enough for Leonardo.
By the time they reach the island, fatigue has caught up with him, and he is half-led, half-carried to a room with a bed and collapses.
- - -
Act Three 2/2
(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 05:46 am (UTC)(link)He sits up on the bed so they are facing each other and gently – ever so gently, the last thing he wants to do is surprise the assassin – pushes his shoulder.
Ezio’s eyes snap open, liquid gold with pinpoint pupils as he takes in his surroundings with his second sight. He quickly squeezes them shut against a glare Leonardo cannot see, and when he reopens them they focus normally.
“You,” he says, somewhere between wonder and relief.
Leonardo smiles and opens his arms. “Me.”
Rather than accept the hug Ezio tackles him back down to the bed, sliding until he can prop his weight on his elbows and knees, holding Leonardo’s face in his hands. He laughs nervously and shakes his head. “I am not sure whether I should praise Adele or throw her off il Coloseo for this.”
“She would be happy with either. Remind me to stop the merchants from selling you any more parachutes.”
Ezio presses a kiss to Leonardo’s lips while his hands trace the contours of Leonardo’s face, as if trying to prove that it is all still there. “Cesare saw me during our chase, and I remember the promise he made. When I returned to look for you and you weren’t there, I thought . . . I thought you were dead, Leo.”
“Funny, I remember once thinking the same thing,” Leonardo quirks an eyebrow. “Do I look dead to you?”
Ezio chuckles. “No,” he says, and leans down for another kiss.
[A/N: Again, comments/critiques greatly admired. I thought I had something else to say, but I can't think of it anymore.]

Re: Ohmygod three copies of Act Three 2/2
(Anonymous) 2011-03-31 12:09 am (UTC)(link)Anyway, this was a wonderful way to wrap up the story! I also love baby assassins and stories with them always make me grin like a fool. Your assassins were no different; I loved how they whisked Leonardo away from danger. (And I've seen that picture and thought of writing a scene for it also!) The reunion with Ezio and Leonardo was also very sweet. Thank you for all of these wonderful acts, anon!
