Connor laid back in bed as he watched Kanen'tó:kon release his clothing a tad startled. He didn’t want him to see it, he shouldn’t be allowed to see it.
“I’m sorry I just wanted to-” He started apologetically before Connor cut him off. “No. . . . . . .No thank you.”
They both fell back into silence as the other looked down at the floor and he focused his gaze upon the ceiling. He wished his clothing still was able to cover up decent portions of his body but the ribbons were so thin they wouldn’t be able to cover that of even a small beetle. He heard Kanen'tó:kon shift uncomfortably before he got up, glancing at him from the corner of his eye he saw him pick up a tray from the top of a dresser in the back of the room before bringing it over. Sitting down next to him he set the tray of food onto the nightstand near the bed before looking over.
“I thought you might be hungry so I got you some food.” He answered when he saw Connor’s face mix with slight confusion, reaching for the bowel as he spoke. “It is cold and bland, but it will not make you ill.” Getting a spoonful and hesitantly moving it towards Connor’s lips. During his imprisonment Connor had been hand fed by Washington whenever a meal was given to him, feeling like he was being treated as a child had been extremely humiliating at first however near the end of his stay had simply given in. Now however at the sight of his hands laying at his sides unbound yet very weak made his heart jump in response. He feebly pushed Kanen'tó:kon’s hand away while he mumbled hoarsely “I can do it myself.
Kanen'tó:kon looked like he was about to protest but sighed and handed Connor the spoon. It took a lot more effort to feed himself than he had originally realized, spilling the soup a good few times before he was able to get the utensil to his mouth with even something in it. There was no smell when it reached his nose and as he poured it into his mouth it chilled his tongue and throat as he swallowed. Normally he would have shuddered in disgust at the frigid liquid that was supposed to be a meal slid down but for now he felt happy to even be receiving a meal. He ate a few more spoonfuls before he gave his friend back the spoon, settling back onto the bed as he set the tray back on the nightstand. He rested his eyes as he felt exhaustion crash back over him, emotionally drained from everything he had experienced. He was surprised that he didn’t feel worried that if he shut his eyes that he would awaken back in Washington’s custody inside the castle, never having escaped in the first place. In all honesty however he had had dreams more vivid than this, most of Achilles sneaking into the palace before helping him escape. Sometimes the old man was alone or he had the aid of either Stephane or even Clipper--on rare occasions Aveline even made an appearance. He supposed that his mind liked to envision the possibilty of escape as a coping mechanism, this being one of them, teasing him mercilessly. They originally acted close to almost a comforting imagination, that is until he awoke to the dark depths of the dungeon that had become his home.
He hadn’t even realized he had drifted asleep until he was awoken by what sounded akin to birds screeching at each other. His mind tugged him back to consciousness even as the warmth of his bed desperately tried to keep him asleep. His eyes fluttered open to a brightly lit room with sunlight pouring in from a half-closed window, his eyes widened in surprise when he finally took note that he was in a room he did not recognize to be his own. He moved to get up and stumbled a little bit, catching himself as he fell back, marveling at his unbound hands. He was about to question what insanity Washington was putting him through until the events of last night returned to him, filling him with shock at the revelation.
He was free.
Finally free of that horrid place where he had awoken to nightmares each and every day. Free of those harsh touches that would make his body stiffen until he was nothing but a cold statue. Free of those piercing eyes that drained him of any chance he thought he had left. He felt a smile spread across his cheeks, something he hadn’t done in years as he let out a little laugh, almost sounding a little hysterical when he did.
I’m free.
His eyes snapped to the door when he heard a loud bang and a shout, realizing now that those screeching birds were actually people. He tentatively got up, wobbling badly and grimacing at just how weak he was as he made his way to the door. Cracking it open just a hair was enough for him to listen in to the men shouting outside.
“You expect me just to have left him there?” That was Kanen'tó:kon’s voice, he sounded absolutely livid.
“Why yes I quite hoped you did.” Someone snapped back, Connor easily recognized it to be Haytham’s voice. “Did you have wax in your ears when I told you to grab the Apple only? Do you know just how much danger you put us, everyone in? I knew you were moronic, but I didn’t expect you to be brainless either.” He frowned angrily, how dare he insult his friend in such a manner. He was about to storm in when he heard them hush silently as someone walked up the stairs. Quickly he stumbled back into bed just as someone opened the door. Kanen'tó:kon peaked inside looking concerned
“Are you all right?” He nodded tiredly in response before he headed in, an unfamiliar man following him in before shutting the door. “This is Alfred Smith, he is a doctor.” His friend explained as the man set down a little bag.
“I shall get to you don’t worry young man, but your friend here has something that needs a little more attention.” The doctor said as Kanen'tó:kon took a seat on a small stool before moving behind him with a small knife and threaded needle. His friend attempted to keep a straight face through the procedure but ended up hissing lightly and flinching as the doctor worked on him. Before he could open his mouth and ask just what had happened Kanen'tó:kon cut him off with an answer.
“I was shot, the musket ball remained in my shoulder.” He yelped as the doctor pulled out the blood-soaked piece of metal with a pleased look.
“Little bugger thought it could escape by hiding behind some muscle.” He stated as he began to stitch the wound close, taking a few minutes before grabbing his bag again and pulled out a small jar. He scooped out a handful of the salve before rubbing it onto the freshly closed wound. “No itching it or anything that could pull the stitches out.” He got up and went over to a fresh bowl of water in the back and washed off his hands before heading over to Connor’s side, glancing over his scars. “Quite a story you have don’t you, boy?” He mused lightly before taking his hands and unwrapping the light layer of bandages. He scooped out some for salve from his bag before rubbing it over the cuts, making him shiver in response.
“Because these are small they won’t need stitches however they will need to be constantly covered up by bandages until they heal.” He said as he got out a roll of them and began to wrap up his wrists. Once he finished he looked back at Kanen'tó:kon who nodded and left.
“Kanen'tó:kon tells me you were imprisoned for several years, facing numerous amounts of torture. I do not wish to hurt you however you will have to let me see all of you if I can make sure you’ll make a full recovery.” It only took a moment to understand what exactly he meant as he frowned. Besides Charles Lee no one with a conscious mind had seen him completely naked and. . . . .abused down there before. He had heard how the colonists reacted to knowledge about two men engaging in these practices--something he hadn’t fully yet understood about why they felt so strongly--and he didn’t want the man to react badly. The doctor was looking down his chest before inspecting his legs as well as his thighs.
“Well at least these all healed rather well. No permanent damage it seems.” He motioned for him to turn over onto his stomach making him choke on his breath. No, no, no please let no one else see. He mentally screamed at his body to stop as it unconsciously flipped itself over, not even once hesitating in doing it. What had Washington done to him? When had his body become so subservient that it ignored it’s minds pleas and did this? Had he become trained like a hound? He tried to find his voice to tell the doctor this wasn’t okay, this wasn’t what he wanted, but he could not find it.The man was quiet for the most part as he took a minute to glance over the healing wounds, “Well these one’s have already closed up and if they stay that way they shouldn’t become infected.” A hand gripped the edge of his breeches and he shut his eyes lightly, trying to hold back tears that threatened to spill over.
The room was silent save for the noises of the company whispering harshly outside until he heard the man get up before returning after a moment. He stiffened as he felt something cool touch his backside, “Easy there, I’m only cleaning up.” The doctor gently wiped away the remnants of Washington’s activities from the previous days, making sure to be quick and very light. He then pulled off the breeches all the way before slipping in a pair of fresh ones onto him before his heart had a chance to freeze in fear. The man lightly turned Connor back around, his face heavy with sympathy and what very clearly looked like a hint of disgust.
“Your wounds are not dire if you keep them clean and are shallow enough to have no long term effects upon your body. However this starvation has had affects on your body’s muscles, I can’t say how badly since I haven’t seen what you looked like previously, but from what I can tell now its more than likely very bad. You’re very young still, which could help your body spring back to normalcy, your mind however. . . . . . . . .it all depends on you.”
Connor remained silent, unsure of what to say to him, he looked up when the man began speaking again. “You have a very dedicated friend out there, I’ve only known him for the past year, but I know that his intentions and heart are in the right place.” With that he packed up his equipment and departed, leaving Connor alone in his all too quiet room. While he greatly appreciated the man’s words concerning Kanen'tó:kon’s compassion he did not wish to hear everything else with his body. Would he ever be able to go back to where he was before his imprisonment? Or the even bigger question is would his mind ever go back to being how it was? Probably never. He would never forget those cruel hands upon him, those harsh grunts in his ear, those never-ending nights of horrible torture.
His eyes snapped up when he heard the door creak open and Kanen'tó:kon step inside. “Are you well? The doctor would not tell me how you were, he said it was not in his right to speak of it.” He asked softly as he sat on the stool across from him, eyes heavy with condolence. He remained silent, Kanen'tó:kon should not be troubled with such news. He jumped when he heard the door open again and saw Haytham in the door, looking tired but angry none the less, he felt himself shake. His skin felt like it was burning beneath his glare.
“Connor.” He started gently, sounding as if he was getting ready to put down a sick pet. “How are you feeling?” Connor really shouldn’t have been as shocked as he was to find his voice so quickly after his father saw him.
“Did you know?” He demanded quietly, watching his for any flicker of emotion, fury building in his gut when he saw none. Haytham stared back at him for a moment before he took a deep breath and sighed.
“There was no way I could have gotten past the front gates-” He started but Connor quickly snapped back. “You could have thought of a way around it! You had so much time to plan a way inside, you had Lee in there and he could have observed the guards rounds! But you did nothing. You let me rot.”
Haytham took a step forward, as if to smack him, but held himself back as he growled. “You think I just sat here and did nothing? I was always thinking of a way to get you out, of a way to help you escape. There was none.”
Connor hadn’t noticed Kanen'tó:kon get up until he was pinning Haytham to the wall, tomahawk to his neck, causing both of their eyes to widen.
“You knew?” Kanen'tó:kon questioned quietly, betrayal deep in his eyes as he searched his father’s own for anything, but was greeted with nothing. “You knew Ratonhnhkaté:ton was alive and you did not tell me?” His voice grew angrier by the moment as he began to snarl. “How could you keep this secret from me? How could you leave him to suffer at the hands of a madman? How could you not let me rescue him?”
“If you were paying any attention to what you have seen, boy.” Haytham hissed as he shot up his arm, hidden blade to Kanen'tó:kon’s neck, “We couldn’t possibly get in there.”
“No.” His friend growled as he released his father roughly, dropping him onto the ground with a loud thump. “You didn’t even try. You just gave up and let him stay in his hold.”
“Do you think that I don’t care about my own son?” Haytham took a moment to get up and dusted himself off, “You’re more of a fool than I thought. As long as Washington has the Apple we couldn’t have attempted anything. We would have saved Connor later when Washington was harmless, but now Washington is more dangerous than ever.”
Kanen'tó:kon huffed, “Just because it was more prime to steal the Apple away does not mean it is smart to have let him remained in his hold. You did not see him the way I did, you could not sense his fear and pain sitting there so beaten and degraded. I thought better of you, Haytham.” His voice sounded hurt as he moved away from him, his eyes filled with sadness. “But it turns out you are no better than the monster in that stone palace.”
“Then I’m the monster that’s your last hope of keeping you alive after that stunt you just pulled.” Haytham grumbled as he watched his friend with narrowed eyes. Kanen'tó:kon turned around and spat,
“No. Our business is done. If you cannot tell me important details like this who knows what you will keep from me in the future? I am taking Ratonhnhkaté:ton back with me to our people, away from the wickedness this city seems to breed.” Connor blinked in surprise as Kanen'tó:kon slammed the door in his father’s face before he could snap back.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 08:37 am (UTC)(link)Sooo not surprised though. You'd think he'd have learned after Connor had THE EXACT SAME REACTION. And Kanen'tó:kon doesn't even know about the rapes yet.
...that being said, does Kanen'tó:kon have the ability to keep Connor safe? Methinks he might have to compromise with Haytham if only because Washington knows where Kanen'tó:kon's people are...and it'd probably be the first place he look for Connor.
...scratch that, will Haytham even allow Connor to get taken away? As screwed up as his priorities are, I can't imagine he'd be pleased to have Connor slip away from his hold a second time...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)So happy to see Connor finally in the hands of someone who really cares about him. Can't imagine how Kanen'tó:kon will react to knowing the full extent of what happened to Connor.
Alright back to refreshing this every hour or so. Just can't get enough of this fic~
Welcome to the New Age - Part 16/???
(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 07:33 am (UTC)(link)****
Connor didn’t say anything that night when Kanen'tó:kon awoke him from his sleep, bag in hand with a hood upon his head. He didn’t ask when he was picked up gently, wrapped in a wool blanket and carried out of the Green Dragon Tavern into empty streets. He didn’t need to know why Kanen'tó:kon had placed him in the back of a wagon--more than likely stolen--before he got into the driver’s street and urged the horses forward, making them gallop into the winter night.
It didn’t take much to understand why they were leaving.
Whatever Kanen'tó:kon’s reason was for his presence in Boston was obviously concluded and Connor wasn’t about to question him now. He was only grateful to be out of that city, away from his prison within the darkness of strange hallways, away from the blank eyes of the soldiers and the madman controlling it all. He assumed that they’ll be heading back to their village, or what’s left of it. He wondered how much has changed within the years of his disappearance, feeling his gut clench at how few survivors may be left. Thoughts of the homestead quickly hit him like a dagger and filled him with worry. Were they all right? Could Washington have taken them all out? Is that why they didn’t come to rescue him? If Haytham had known surly when of the assassin recruits would have found out about it through intelligence they would have told Achilles, unless they were all gone in the first place. The thought of Achilles’ being in trouble or even dead caused his eyes and throat to burn. He had to make sure that the old man was all right.
But how could he even get to him? There was no way he’d survive a trip alone to the Homestead. He could barely fight off a fox stealing his food, let alone an angry wolf that attacked him for intruding on his territory. He’d have a chance in the middle of spring, but now, in the middle of a snowstorm, he wouldn’t even be able to get two feet. For now staying in Kanen'tó:kon’s company was prime, he could fight off any bandits or vicious animals as well as catch food to feed the both of him with. The sooner he recovered the better and pushing himself to his limit would not help him in any way. He sighed softly and curled up closer in the blanket, restless. Despite being free of his bindings and confinement from within the castle he was still not completely free. His body was so extremely weak from his stay inside the palace, preventing him from walking too long let alone running through the trees. He felt his throat tighten as the thought of never being able to climb the trees the way he did, flying through the branches like before. Five years away from the consistency of climbing them had rendered his muscles into mush, no longer able to even attempt the feats he accomplished long ago. Yet the memories were still there, he knew every movement that certain things required, perhaps building up again was all he required? He settled back on the floor of the wagon and rested his eyes, drifting off to the sounds of howling wind.
Kanen'tó:kon quickly became a source of resentment over the passing week.
They rarely spoke, too busy with concentrating on traveling to where ever his friend wanted to go, to have long talks. During the first few nights Kanen'tó:kon would tell stories from their childhood of their old games and hunting experiences that were no doubt supposed to help comfort him, to take his mind off of what happened. But they did the exact opposite instead, angering him greatly as he remembered things that were once so easy would now act as a challenge to him. When Kanen'tó:kon realized the stories weren’t helping he remained silent instead, casting him cautious glances as they ate during the night. The silence was better at first compared to the old stories, however as Connor was left to brood by the end of the night he was quietly seething.
It seemed to Connor that all of his skills that were lost to him had been given over to Kanen'tó:kon instead. He had become a marvelous hunter--and by extension a wonderful tree climber, a stark contrast to his younger self--going so far as to leap from the shadows of the trees and taking down a massive elk, thick with fat. He climbed the tallest of pine trees to scout out the area before leaping in perfection to the bushes below. It was during one of these scouting climbs that Connor had finally had enough, he had felt his strength spur as he shrugged off his blanket and walked over to the nearest tree, stumbling lightly. He grabbed the lowest branch and placed his feet against the trunk, moving to pull himself up. He nearly shouted in frustration as he felt his muscles scream in pain as he scrambled to get up into the tree, panting heavily when he finally got onto the branch. He stood up after a moment, his legs wobbling, threatening to throw him out of the tree until he grabbed another branch for support. He took a deep breath and glanced around, trying to decide his next move. Climbing higher wouldn’t be that great of an idea, he risked the chance of becoming stuck and he really didn’t want to have to call out for help. The next tree was a bit far, but with in leaping distance and it was lower to the ground as well. He steadied himself, squatting down a bit as he focused on the branch he wanted to land on before leaping, falling faster than he expected he shot his arms out wildly and caught onto the branch his feet were supposed to land on. He sighed in relief before trying to pull himself up, but grunted in pain and surprise as his muscles refused, kicking his legs around in open air trying to get momentum or something to help push him up. He heard a crunch of snow before he felt the hands grab his legs and pull lightly, making his arms shout in protest before his fingers ungraciously released their hold.
He yelped in surprise as he fell, thankfully into Kanen'tó:kon’s arms instead of the hard, frozen ground. His friend looked at him a little irritatedly, but concern in his eyes.
“What was that for?” He questioned firmly as he walked back to the wagon. Connor struggled in his grip, wanting nothing more than to be away from him, to stop being reminded of just how far he had fallen. His friend shouted in protest and tightened his grip on him making Connor stiffen in response.
A hand on his arm gripped him hard enough to surly leave bruises as a harsh voice whispered, dripping with arrogance, into his ear.
He was suddenly on the floor of the wagon, liquid warmth dripping down his cheeks as he started to here the repetition of “I am so sorry” in his ear. He glanced up to see Kanen'tó:kon wrapping him back up in the wool blanket--looking away with remorse-filled eyes--before stepping away and getting back in the driver’s seat and continuing their journey once more. Connor sat there in shock as he felt the tears dripping down his cheeks refuse to stop, how could he let himself break in front of his friend like this?
How could he let Washington’s memory haunt him so badly?
The rest of the trip remained in silence, with Connor staying in the back of the wagon sleeping most of the time and Kanen'tó:kon only peeking back inside to hand him his meals. The whole situation felt eerily similar to that of his placement last year, causing him to wake up in cold sweats, catching himself whimpering on more than one occasion as he awoke. It was a long and uncomfortable trip. However on the morning of the beginning of the second week a feeling of ease swept through him, relaxing him greater than he had ever been since he escaped. Quietly he moved toward the back of the wagon and glanced outside, gasping in surprise as memories suddenly flooded him.
He was at the homestead, back within the safe confines that he had spent a great portion of his life in. He was finally home. He heard the distant voices beyond them and sank back into the wagon, overjoyed but fearful. How would they react after seeing him like this? No he couldn’t scare them, they were good people who shouldn’t and wouldn’t be troubled with such news. He blinked in surprise as he realized with a start what Kanen'tó:kon was doing taking him here anyway. Of course his friend knew that he had been staying here during their training but why was he coming here first instead of to the village? The wagon stopped with a sudden jerk making him gasp in surprise and a little pain from the quick stop. He listened as he heard rustling as Kanen'tó:kon got up from his seat and walked around to the back, moving the flaps out of the way. He offered his hand, which Connor took lightly and a little embarrassedly. His friend helped him out of the wagon and rested a hand on his shoulder to steady him as he walked him to the manor.
Connor gulped lightly in nervousness. Would Achilles be furious at him for his capture? Would he be disappointed at his failure to escape? Would he be disgusted by what he had let Washington do to him? His mind was making him panic by suddenly bringing up all of these question as they reached the door, his heart stuttered as Kanen'tó:kon opened the door.
“Achilles?” He called out lightly as they headed inside, Connor locked his eyes onto the ground. The house was silent save for the sound of birds chirping outside and the crashing of waves on the cliffs below. Kanen'tó:kon looked inside the living room to see if he was there before moving onto the kitchen when he wasn’t. Connor remained in the door’s entrance quietly, looking at the floor while pulling the blanket closer around himself from the chill outside. His ears pricked up when he heard the sound of snow crunching behind him causing him to whip around, startled.
Achilles stood there silently, having stopped in his tracks upon seeing him standing there in the door way. They regarded each other for a moment, neither opening their mouths to speak while looking each other up and down. Achilles, Connor marveled, seemed to have put on an extreme amount of years since they had last seen each other. His hair was even grayer than before if it was possible while the wrinkles adorning his face were much deeper making him look ancient. Connor supposes he looks no better, exhausted and smelly as he is. He hears footsteps echo behind him inside before they freeze, Kanen'tó:kon no doubt stopping because of the scene before him. After what feels like ages Achilles speak, voice soft and rough like always.
“Well I would suggest that I must’ve slipped along the path up here and died upon seeing you two standing in the door way, but the absolute biting wetness in my boots convinces me otherwise.” He hurried up the steps as fast as he could, never once taking his eyes off of Connor. He moved aside so he could let the old man pass, noticing that as he did tears begin to fall. He wiped them away quickly just as Achilles spoke again. “While I don’t mind if you do that after everything you must have been through I suggest not doing it in front of me, lest you want to see these old eyes pour rivers.” Connor heard himself let out a little humorless bark of laughter as he followed the old man inside, staying right beside him. He felt like he did as a child when he would cling to his mother’s side when he was frightened. He used to deny it so ferociously when he was younger, but now if someone called him out on it he doesn’t believe he would give a false excuse.
He followed the old man upstairs to a room he barely even remembered after all those years ago, one he barely spent time in as of late as well. The room was just as he left it, messy with clothes he had quickly stripped out of when he was in a rush to leave, but looked as if someone was currently living there with the absence of dust.
“I hope you are well enough to clean still, you know how much I dislike it when you leave clothes on the floor.” He said softly and gently, Connor realized what he was doing and would normally assure Achilles that he needed no ‘comfort’ stage of getting back into the flow of things when he was obviously fine. However he had never been so relieved to be told to clean his room, the idea he could go back into his normal life was a pleasant thought. He nodded softly before walking inside, still holding the blanket tightly around himself, not ready for him to see the scars even though he knew that once the door had been shut Kanen'tó:kon would tell Achilles exactly what he had seen.
“I’ll have some fresh water sent up for to wash up in.” Achilles said softly as he shut the door. Connor sat down on the bed and looked around the room, the sheer amount of windows relaxing him. He no longer had a torture room where no windows stood, preventing his escape. The room was comfortable and nice and not in any way restricting. He laid back on the bed and closed his eyes, falling asleep before he could even attempt to keep them open. He didn’t sleep for long when the nightmares of hands gripping his hips like talons and an intimate pain stung him. He sat up panting lightly, noticing how the room was lit by candles as the inside of it was died pink and red from the setting sun outside. He got up after a moment, spotting a bowl of water upon the top of his dresser and headed over. He picked up the cloth sitting next to it and dabbed it in the water before washing himself off. He shivered lightly as the cold water touched his skin, making him gasp as the chill sank into his bones. He didn’t wash himself for too long before he picked up a pair of plain assassin robe’s beside the bed and put them on, taking a few moments to button up everything. He stood still for a moment, examining in shock at how his clothes hung from his body, the clothes felt like they weighed more than him with all the extra cloth!
He sighed softly and shook his head, he should have known that he wouldn’t just magically be able to fit into all his old clothes after five years, yet he really wished he did. He contemplated putting the hood on as he walked down the stairs, listening to hushed voices in the living room. He stopped and leaned back agains the wall, eavesdropping in on a conversation that he realized was centered around him.
“The doctor had been very quiet when he had left the room where Ratonhnhkaté:ton was resting. I do not know what he had determined but he seemed really unnerved by it. Could he be ill with something dangerous?” Kanen'tó:kon whispered harshly, nearly making Connor cackle. His friend’s naivety was going to kill him one day. He heard Achilles adjust in his seat before muttering something silently before he spoke loudly,
“Connor I realize that you don’t want to interrupt our conversation but spying on us is not any less rude.” Achilles snapped, although it lacked any annoyance the old man usually possessed and when he moved out of his hiding spot he saw only sympathy in his eyes.
“Sorry.” Connor flicked his eyes to the floor as the old man responded.
“There is no need for you to apologize, Connor. I can understand your hesitance to be seen.” He beckoned him over with a hand, looking over the hanging clothes on him that completely didn’t fit. “Well that will take awhile to get it all back, and time sadly we do not have.”
“I can still fight.” He cut in sharply, a tad angry too. He wasn’t suddenly incompetent because he lacked his former strength.
“If you think I’ll be allowing you to go back into this fight you’re sorely mistaken!” Achilles barked making Connor flinch. The old man paused for a moment before speaking in a softer tone, “You have suffered enough and I will not Washington steal you away just when we got you back.”
“I have disappeared as far as I can tell. Washington has no idea where I am.” He frowned as Achilles chuckled lightly.
“Tell that to the fleet that followed the Aquila back from Boston.”

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 07:53 am (UTC)(link)Worried about Washington following the Aquila though. I hope the homesteaders aren't harmed by Kanen'tó:kon's decision to bring Connor to the Homestead (though maybe it's a good opportunity to relieve Washington of a certain apple?).
Really curious as to how Kanen'tó:kon got Connor away without alerting Haytham. Kanen'tó:kon announced his intentions to Haytham earlier, so either Haytham is woefully unobservant (doubtful) or Kanen'tó:kon pulled quite a stunt. :D
Am so loving Kanen'tó:kon and feeling bad that Connor feels so helpless in his presence. No, dear Connor, it's not fair, but it'll get better.

Haytham nearly broke down the door in fury when the moron of a boy slammed it in his face. He raised his fist to punch it, tightening his fingers before lowering it with a curse. He wished Charles were here with some positive news or something to calm him down, pulling back a chair from the table he collapsed in it before he started to rub his temples. Continuing to be furious at the boy would not help their situation and more than likely make their tempers so volatile Washington would easily find them as they started throwing each other out windows. Perhaps sending Charles back to the palace instead had been a bad idea, but he needed to know just exactly Washington would do that his second precious object was stolen. He stopped himself when he realized he was calling his son an object. He was not about to sink to that madman’s level and address his son as such, no matter how politically correct it may be. He looked up to the door again, wishing that it would just burst into flames under his glare, letting him into the room so he could explain his reasoning in this. He sighed, it wasn’t like Kanen'tó:kon would listen to him, the boy saw things only as black and white, ignoring the large gray area in between. Connor was the same way, however it seemed that near the end of their working relationship--before Washington’s idiocy--that he had begun to see things in a different light. He leaned back in his chair and called Catherine over as he ordered whatever slop they were serving, he was going to be waiting awhile after all.
By the time Kanen'tó:kon had finally opened the door Haytham had been contemplating retiring for the evening. He simply watched as the boy crept out wearing his robes once more, unable to see his eyes from under the shadows of his hood. He stood up quietly, crossing his arms before letting out a light cough making the younger man tense before he looked over, frowning.
“Haytham.” His voice was low, the anger from earlier was still there, but he was taking great care to make sure it wasn’t getting the best of him. Well good, Haytham thought, at least he’s trying to act civil.
“Where are you going so late in the evening?” He questioned sounding genuinely confused even though he knew exactly where he was going.
“I am leaving as I had stated before.” He said gruffly, shifting uncomfortably.
“You won’t let me have a say in this?” He snapped back, mentally cursing as he let his frustration seep into his tone.
“You do not have a say.” The younger man hissed lightly, his hand unconsciously settling upon the hilt of his tomahawk.
“He is my son.” Haytham shot back, his own wrist itching to flick out his hidden blade.
“You do not deserve him as a son, nor do you get to address him as such.” Haytham had to stop himself from snapping back and saying something that would alienate the boy further. He did however take a step back as the boy’s words stung him like a burn. The truth in his words hurt more than the tone had, no amount of denying would make what he said false. He had lied to his son, he had left him Washington’s grasp and he had made the strategical decision to leave him in the psychotic tyrant’s hands. He could not displace the blame from his shoulders onto that of someone else, no this was all his doing.
And for the first time he hated it.
He hated being seen as the villain, seen as the bad guy who lacks a conscience or a heart when he truly did have one. So he didn’t know his son long enough to form a strong bond, so he was a bit of an arse when the two were working together to find Church, so he was a bit cold-hearted sometimes. It didn’t mean he couldn’t feel. He truly had feelings for Connor’s mother, Ziio had been a one of a kind and he doubted he’d ever find someone like that again, by extension he had at first liked the idea of having a son--even though that quickly vanished after meeting Connor, it returned in a different way once they had begun working together. Just because he wasn’t ideal father material, that didn’t mean he could not be one could it? However his son was a grown man now, he didn’t need him fussing over his shoulder. He looked up on surprise as he heard Kanen'tó:kon mumble something softly, forgetting that the boy had even been there.
“What was that?” He asked lightly watching as the younger man sighed before repeating.
“I am sorry. I did not mean to say that. . . . . .I thought about what you said earlier and I realized that I was in the wrong. I am sorry that I ruined what you and Lee had been working on for months, but you must understand that I could not leave him there.” Kanen'tó:kon apologized lightly, his hands were clasped in front of him, looking utterly awkward and uncomfortable with having to say he was sorry. Haytham sighed lightly, feeling what felt like a smile tug at his lips as he just observed classic Kanen'tó:kon action.
“You are forgiven, and I am also sorry for keeping this information hidden from you. I didn’t want it to affect you when you were out conducting our work on the streets or provoke you into acting rashly and taking it upon yourself to break into the palace.” Watching as the boy’s shoulders relaxed greatly he felt the atmosphere around them become all the more gentle.
“I forgive you, but I wish you would have trusted my skills better. I would have been fine.” He looked up at Haytham, letting him catch a glimpse of relaxed eyes.
“I didn’t want to risk it. You are more valuable to us alive despite how less talkative you might have been dead.” He felt a smirk spread across his lips as the boy rolled his eyes. “You aren’t still leaving are you?” Haytham asked as he felt the mood of the room fall again.
“I am sorry, but I cannot stand to be in this city any longer knowing that if we slip up even once Ratonhnhkaté:ton would pay the ultimate price.” Haytham sat back in his seat solemnly. He wished that Kanen'tó:kon had been graced with that of a lying tongue when he was younger, it would have saved Haytham numerous slaps from the truth. However it was better he supposed then getting tangled in one’s own web of lies. If Haytham wanted Connor to be kept safe it meant letting Kanen'tó:kon take him out of town and away Boston. He wished he could explain to Connor his reasoning for what he did but he could seek solace with his son later if it meant keeping him safe from Washington’s clutches.
“Are you planning on returning to the homestead?” He watched as the boy nodded before he stood up and adjusted his coat. “There is a wagon outside, the owner is out for the count downstairs, drunk, I suggest using that as a mode of transportation lest you want Connor to die of hypothermia before you reach the city limits. Stick to the hunting trails not the main road, I’ve seen Washington’s patrols all along them. I will remain here with Charles and find out what his next plans are before I send word. If we can we’ll try to focus Washington’s attention on us instead of you.” It was a stretch, but maybe by splitting up he could lead Washington on a wild goose chase while Connor recuperated under Achilles’ care. He jumped when Kanen'tó:kon came over and clasped his arm suddenly, looking him in the eye, shining with gratefulness.
“Thank you.” He said as he stepped away, “I will not forget this kindness and sacrifice. I wish you well on your endeavor and hope that you live long enough so that I may thank you once more.”
“Yes well just make sure you don’t let yourself get killed before you even leave the city.” He stepped away before heading into his room before sighing softly. Just like that he had let his son slip away from him again and back into the arms of his enemy. He stopped himself and thought angrily that this conflict was beyond that of petty rivalry between the Assassins and Templars now. He wasn’t going to deny that his son would more than likely recover much better under the old man who he had forged such a strong bond with. Haytham would always deny it, but he can’t the twinge of jealousy that sparks inside him when he thinks of the relationship between Achilles and Connor. His ears catch the sound of Kanen'tó:kon’s door opening and shutting for the last time and watches out the window as he sees the younger man’s figure carrying the bundled up figure of his son before entering the wagon. His eyes trail them for as far as he can before they disappear from sight and he backs away from the cool glass, leaving his room and sitting back at the table. All he had to do know was focus Washington’s wrath on him.
Perfect.
He hadn’t even realized he had fallen asleep at table before he was awakened by a hand shaking him roughly and the repetition of ‘Master Kenway’ in his ear. He batted the offending hand away as his other rubbed the sleep from his eyes as he awoke.
“Charles?” He questioned lightly as he held back the yawn that was threatening to spring from his lips. His vision was clearing up and he nearly stumbled back in surprise as he was greeted with the panicked face of his companion.
“Some good morning this is.” He grumbled as he straightened out, frowning as he felt a kink in his neck from sleeping so strangely last night.
“Master Kenway, Faulkner, that drunk of a sailor, took ages to flee from the harbor. Washington had enough time to prepare his ships and sail after them.” Charles responded frustratedly, as he walked away and began pacing back and forth. “We can’t follow them now that his ship’s left port! What do we do? Remain here with while the assassin recuperates? Sir?”
Haytham felt himself jump up before he even registered what exactly was going on. Washington wasn’t as much of an idiot as he thought, and fate seemed to be shining down upon him more than it should. He covered his face with a hand and groaned lightly, Washington didn’t know where Connor was and might have checked the whole city before leaving for the homestead, but now that he was following Faulkner home he had no doubt he’d search the homestead first. There was no time to warn any of them now that Kanen'tó:kon was a day of traveling ahead and Washington more or less so. Perhaps if he stowed away on one of the ships they would be able to catch up with Washington’s? Connor was able to captain a ship and he was still a child, surely it wouldn’t be too hard to learn if he needed to commandeer the ship would it? He got up and stormed passed Charles who stumbled after him.
“Charles I want you to ride to the homestead and warn them about Washington’s arrival, don’t stop for anything. And take Connor’s weapons with you, I forgot to tell Kanen'tó:kon we had them in our possession.” He instructed as he marched out the door, practically leaping onto the horse that awaited him outside. Lee stuttered in response at the sudden instructions but agreed, well at least Haytham assumed he agreed as he spurred the horse into a full gallop down the street.
How foolish had been letting Connor go so easily? He swore in anger as he leaned down against the animal’s mane, away from the biting wind that stung his face. He had unintentionally let his son be taken right into Washington’s hand again, could he have been anymore half-witted? There was no time for regret now, he had to focus on getting to the harbor in time to get onto a ship that was leaving. When he reached the docks he quickly realized the sheer absence of guards that normally patrolled the docks. Haytham supposes those guards were the one’s the tyrant had board the ships in an effort to chase Faulkner.
Haytham spotted one of Washington’s ships remaining in the harbor, however from the guards rushing aboard it didn’t look like it would be there for long. Haytham ran along the now empty dock, hoping that for this one moment fate may be giving him a break. He crept down below some barrels as he watched the soldiers trying to march in the normal uniform monotone step, but failing miserably due to the urgency of the situation. They scrambled to get to their positions, looking as erratic as a trail of ants when one interrupts them with a boot. He chuckled lightly as he watched them before he looked around for a way to get onto the ship. Walking onto the ship was not ideal because of all the soldiers that were entering the ship, he’d be caught before he even came within a single meter of the ship, however the absolute chaos of them may allow him to slip onto the ship unnoticed. He wasn’t willing to risk capture however. Swimming to the side of the ship and climbing aboard would give him less of a chance of getting caught however he really didn’t care for getting soaking wet in the middle of winter. He’d freeze to death before he could even get half-way up the ship. Perhaps there was a better option on the other side of the ship, he mused as he made to get up.
He froze when he felt a bayonet poke his neck.
He didn’t have to turn around to know exactly who it was and cursed himself for not asking just which ship Washington had deported on or if he had indeed even left at all yet when Charles had told him. He moved around slowly, careful to make sure he do anything less that would give Washington a reason to kill him. Washington was grinning like a fox when he turned around, letting out a hearty laugh when he saw Haytham frown. He really wanted to kill the man.
“Haytham.” Washington addressed him with glee as he removed his musket and his personal guards raised theirs to his neck.
“Washington.” He stated calmly, shifting a little as a soldier put the blade a little too close for comfort. The tyrant looked absolutely malicious when he instructed his other guards to bind Haytham’s hands. He glared at the man as he felt his wrists cruelly tied together, hissing lightly as they cut into his skin.
“Going to kill me, Commander?” He questioned lowly as he watched that smirk widen.
“Oh no, I have much bigger plans for you.”

Washington has Haytham. Only thing worse is if he also gets his hands on Kanen'tó:kon and Connor.
And irony of all ironies, it's actually NOT Haytham's fault this time, despite what he's telling himself.
...I have the sinking feeling Washington is going to try a trade or something. Or use Haytham as a hostage.

Welcome to the New Age - Part 18/???

Connor wishes he could say he was glad to be back.
But to say that would mean he would have to ignore the fact that surrounding bay had now been blockaded by an impenetrable wall of ships, that Achilles discussed their next move in secrecy to Kanen'tó:kon alone, that he had been confined to his room by the old man even when he had discussed his displeasure of being kept in the dark. He glared at the locked door with fury even though he knew that once the two were done talk the door would be unlocked once more, allowing him to go where ever he wanted to again. However he they would never answer his questions about what should be done next, about how they should deal with Washington’s forces that remained upon the water. It also didn’t help that Connor was not allowed to leave the house to discuss matters with the surrounding homestead residents, nor was he to even show them that he was alive. Achilles said it was better for them to be as ignorant as possible, just in case Washington attempted to extort the information from them with the Apple. The few days only grew worse when the homestead received another unexpected arrival who had to be kept away from him at all costs.
Charles Lee.
When he opened the door only to be greeted with the loathed man’s face he tackled him onto the icy steps in front if the manor, pleased when he heard his head bang against the ground. No sooner that they had fallen however he felt hands grip his shoulders as Kanen'tó:kon pulled him off from Charles, hissing in anger as he watched the man stand up and brush the snow off of his coat.
“What a fine welcome this is.” He said stuffily as he raised a hand to touch the back of his head, wincing from what would probably form into a bump. Good.
“What are you doing here?” Connor snapped as he shrugged his friend’s hands off of him, glaring at Lee.
“Well I did come bearing news from Haytham on Washington. He has sent a fleet of ships for you-” He started and Connor cut him off quickly in annoyance.
“Did you not notice the massive ships that have squeezed themselves into our bay? Or were you blinded by your need to please my father?” Lee narrowed his eyes and Connor nearly smirked in satisfaction when he realized he struck a chord.
“I didn’t come here to make petty arguments with you boy.” Charles responded lowly as he stared down at him. “I came to warn you, even if I was a tad too late I can assure you I didn’t come here just to get a rise out of you.” He sighed and tried to relax his shoulders but failed miserably. “Haytham hopefully has snuck aboard one of the ships and should be working his way through them to dispatch the fleet or maybe even Washington himself. I suggest we wait until he does so or gives a a signal that he needs help in doing so.”
“What kind of a signal would he send?” Kanen'tó:kon questioned from behind Connor. He couldn’t believe this! How could his friend believe Charles Lee, a snake of a man? The man who had seen him imprisoned in Washington’s hold because he worked for the tyrant king. Who knew that he wasn’t here on Washington’s orders either? He growled, wishing he had his tomahawk or hidden blades instead of nothing but his fists. He hated to admit it but if they got into a fight Charles would easily win with how weak he was. Even with all his strength he still wasn’t as great as Charles was in hand-to-hand combat.
“That is something I don’t know. It could be one of the ships in the harbor firing upon it’s brothers, a ship catching fire from below decks, just something completely out of the ordinary.” Charles answered as he pushed past him, making him snarl lightly in anger. This man deserved little if not any of their help and he wasn’t about to just listen to the fox’s tongue with hissed nothing but lies.
“Connor.” Achilles was looking at him from the bottom of the stairs, with that look on his face that made him growl lightly. He was getting sent up to his room while that man was here? No, he wouldn’t do it.
“No.” Connor frowned angrily as the old man’s face hardened, “I will not.”
“This isn’t open for discussion, boy. Now go upstairs to your room!” He demanded fiercely, making Connor take a step back in slight fright.
“Not while that man is in this house.” Connor hissed after a moment as Achilles sighed.
“You must be a fool if you thought I am actually planning to let this man stay inside the house, knowing that you would destroy half of it in the fight you will most obviously start. He will discuss just what he is here for in detail to me and once he is finished Kanen'tó:kon will escort him to his home on the property where he shall remain until this mess is sorted out.” Achilles stated as gently as he could, a flash of worry crossing his face as he watched Connor wobbly lightly. His body still wasn’t used to standing up on its own let alone ready to walk, making him sigh lightly in frustration and sadness. It seemed like he was never going to be able to get back to how he had been before what happened. He knew that recuperation was a long and slow process--it had been that way even with the smallest of cuts--was he expected to just wait years for his body to get better? He frowned as he headed upstairs, Achilles trailing right behind him before he entered his room quietly. He tried not to hear the sound of the door shutting and locking behind him, but his mind wouldn’t let him ignore it. He went over to his window, peering out of it to look at Washington’s fleet that rested in the harbor, their masts leaving shadows that looked akin to claws that stretched across the water. Connor sat down and continued to watch out the window, observing the crew of the Aquila move around along the docks in their normal routine. Because of the constant sending to his room Connor had quite a lot of time to watch just how the crew of the Aquila move around, noticing that they had a very uniform like way they went about each day. The steps were always the same as they wore down a line into the dirt from where they walked, each foot falling in exactly the same place each day, that same monotone like pace.
The footfalls echoing in his very mind as the emptiness of their eyes bore into him.
Connor blinked in shock as he felt his heart seize up in panic at the sudden memory that assaulted him, making him look away from the dock. He nearly screamed in frustration, was he really going to let things like that remind him of his time in the palace? Was he really going to let Washington’s memory cling to him like a tick and haunt him through every waking moment? The tyrant already had free reign over his dreams, making him twist and turn in an effort to somehow wake up and escape only to have his eyes remain open for no less than a few moments before being dragged back into the nightmare that awaited him. He was free of that man! He shouldn’t have to remain awake in the dead of night, curling up in his blankets to give himself the illusion of comforting arms. He had escaped and his mind should be free as his body had been, not still in the same shackles he had spent a whole torturous year in. He wonders if maybe it was the Apple’s influence upon his mind for those four years, although he hadn’t been awake the it still had possessed his mind, perhaps these were the effects that happened for being controlled for so long.
He looked down as he picked at the edge of the windowsill, confused and upset now. He wished he could talk to Achilles about these feelings or something, but the old man was too busy to be bothered by such trivial matters right now. Glancing back outside he watched the water of the bay that swayed back and forth in between the cliff walls. He noticed the rippling of the water before he spotted the small rowboat making it’s way to shore and the gathering of the Aquila crew among the docks. He squinted his eyes trying to see the figures inside the rowboat, only able to make out what looked like four people. Two were soldiers, he knew because the colors of their uniforms had become ingrained upon his skull, but the others were too far away to know. He heard the front door of the manor open and he watched in surprise as Lee, Achilles and Kanen'tó:kon moved to the edge of the cliff to watch the rowboat dock by the Aquila and the occupants get out. He heard murmuring from the trio below him as they walked back inside the house, their voices taking on a tone of worry, which didn’t bode well in Connor’s gut. He watched as the forms that had boarded the rowboat settle upon horses that had been given to them by the crewmen before they rode up the trail to the homestead. Connor moved back into his room and began to pace, his breathing catching in his throat anxiously as he wondered just who had arrived on shore. He froze when he heard the front door open once more as Achilles let the strange men inside without a fight making him twitch in trepidation. The awkward silence that descended upon the house made him shift in uncomfortableness as he leaned against the door, trying to catch anything from the conversation downstairs. When he was greeted with nothing he stepped back in anger. That was enough, he was tired of being left in the dark and if his friends were in trouble he would never forgive himself for not being able to help. He looked at the door for a moment before he grimaced, there was no way he could push that door with what little strength he had. Besides even if he did there was no telling what would happen to his friends, if they had muskets pointed at them they’d be dead before he’d even get to the staircase. His gaze fell upon the window as he continued to look for a way out and gulped, the only way to get to Achilles and Kanen'tó:kon silently would be having to climb down the edge of the mansion. Sure he was only on the second floor and the fall wasn’t too bad, however there was no telling what his body would do when it came in contact with the ground.
He took a deep breath before he cracked open the window, taking a long moment to ease himself out of the threshold and grip the edge. His arms screamed in protest as he lowered himself down, biting his lip in pain as his feet desperately searched for the windowsill below to brace his feet upon. When he found it he nearly let his hands slip from the edge he clung to, making his adrenaline rush for a moment. He took a second to catch his breath before he lowered himself down completely, his hands taking ahold of the top of the next window as his feet reached down and touched the ground. He sighed in relief, shaking slightly as the doubts that had entered his mind when he began to descend left. He ducked down below the windows as he crept along the side of the building and to the back door. He quietly opened it, before peeking inside, the sounds of hushed voices reaching his ear. He moved inside the house before shutting the door behind him, sneaking through the kitchen and to the living room where the voices grew louder.
“I will make no such deal!” Achilles snapped suddenly and furiously, making Connor jump back in surprise, catching himself before he stumbled back into the jars of preserved food. Leaning against the wall he continued to listen in on the ongoing conversation.
“Achilles please think about this.” That was Haytham’s voice, making him raise his eyebrows in surprise. Had Haytham already taken care of business so fast and so stealthily. He felt however his blood turn to ice when the next voice spoke.
“I can understand your hesitance in the trade, considering Haytham is not particularly an amazing offer. However I can throw this into the mix as well, I shall leave the Homestead unharmed instead of burning it to the ground.” Washington’s voice nearly trigged the nightmares that were hiding inside his head, tearing at the confines Connor wrapped them up in when he was awake. He hadn’t expected the tyrant to get so close to him again and so soon either, he felt his body relax when he heard Achilles’ voice once more.
“We can survive. You can keep Haytham and your offer, you will not have Connor back.” Achilles responded, not bothering to hide the anger that seeped into his tone. The old man was incredibly brave.
“Or I can kill you. It won’t take much you old fool, I was trying to be diplomatic, even save you from suffering, but it seems that you like to spit in my face.” He heard the lowering of muskets and he jumped out from his hiding spot before he even knew what he was doing.
“Wait.” He started quietly, surprised with how much he felt himself shrink when Washington’s gaze focused on him. It felt like his breath had been stolen from him when the two locked eyes for a moment, frozen in that spot by his glare. He only felt his breath return when he shifted his eyes to the ground. “I will go with you, in return for the safety of the homestead and the residents along with my father.” He bargained quietly, expecting to be bound in chains once the words left his mouth, until that was Kanen'tó:kon snarled and moved in front of him, making him look up..
“You shall not have him again! Nor shall you kill the innocents who live here and Haytham.” His friend threatened his arm stretched out and pushed him back, away from the scene as Kanen'tó:kon focused Washington’s frigid gaze upon himself. He heard Charles cough softly before the man decided to speak up, looking at everyone before he spoke.
“May I perhaps offer another suggestion?”

Anyways, I gotta say that you've made me like Charles a bit more as well. He might be a scumbag at times, but at least he knows when to not be one. XD
(I'm also curious about why Washington didn't use the apple to control them.)

When Lee had opened his mouth Connor could have killed them right there. His suggestion, if one could even call the idiotic idea that, was to leave the terms of agreement as is, which meant Connor for Haytham. He really should’ve of known Lee wouldn’t let Washington take away his father, after all that bond between the two of them ran extremely deep, however as of late he was still surprised the man would do so even after the knowledge of just what happened during Connor’s imprisonment. That is until Charles suggested turning their trade into a bet. The Aquila would face off against Washington’s fleet, who ever was defeated would hand over the spoils to the victor. Normally he would’ve jumped at the chance to lead the Aquila into battle to destroy the tyrant’s fleet, however Washington jumped in before Connor had even a chance to find his voice.
“Connor will not be Captain. He will stay ashore with Haytham under my guards watch, those are my conditions.” He had stated simply and before Connor could snap in protest Achilles had quietly agreed. He silently sputtered, trying to think of something he could say to combat the situation even as Achilles said Faulkner would captain the ship and that Kanen'tó:kon would accompany him. No, no, no! This wasn’t how it was supposed to be, this wasn’t how everything was going to go, he wasn’t going to let his crew get slaughtered by Washington’s fleet without him being there to help defend it. He growled in fury when he watched the tyrant smirk in pleasure before he got up and grabbed his arm. The whole room froze as Washington pulled him against his chest making him lock eyes with terrifying blues ones, stiffening further when a hand came up to cup his chin.
“I’ve been terribly lonely.” Washington grinned lightly as his hand reached up to tangle in his hair. He glanced to the side when he realized he heard nothing, no one had moved from their spots to help him, to get Washington away from him. Their eyes were locked onto him however just like the blank eyes of the soldiers had, burning into his back as a hand tightened it’s hold on his arm making him look back at the horrible face before him.
“It isn’t polite to get distracted when someone speaks to you.” Washington tutted as he leaned in, placing his lips to Connor’s ear before whispering softly. “I’ll have you back before the sun has fallen, today. We can make up for all that time we missed.” A hand trailed down his back, lingering on his hip for a moment before he moved away. Then he was gone, the nightmare had pushed out the door leaving the members of the house still frozen to their spots. Connor was the first one to move, pulling his hood up and over his head, to hide his fright-filled eyes from the rest of the group.
“Connor-” Achilles had started quietly before he cut him off with a hand.
“I am fine.” He caught a glimpse of the soldiers Washington had left behind as they lowered their muskets. So that’s why they didn’t move to aid him. He realizes that their purpose for being left behind was probably to make sure Haytham and he remained at the manor so the winner could claim their prize once the battle had concluded.
He nearly was sick in disgust.
A low snarl nearly made him jump with a start, looking over to the place of the sound seeing that it was Kanen'tó:kon who had uttered it. His eyes flashed with understanding, so he knew now. It wasn’t like he could keep the truth from him forever, but still Connor wished he had some naivety left that would have helped him remained ignorant.
“I will kill him.” He promised nearly making Connor laugh.
“No promises.” He spat out as he moved to turn away until the harsh command of one of the soldiers told him to stop.
“You shall remain here in our custody until the King has stated otherwise. The rest of you get out.” One moved from Haytham’s side before coming to him, forcing him to sit down in the remaining chair. He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked over to see the sad face of Achilles.
“Don’t worry, Connor we will make sure that you are kept safe.” He quietly murmured a thank you, even though what Achilles said was more than likely a lie he was comforted by it before he turned and left, following the others. No sooner that he had heard the front door open and shut did Haytham begin to bark with laughter, making him glare at the man angrily.
“I can’t believe that actually worked.” Haytham was grinning like a madman as he leaned back in his seat. Now that he was able to get a good look at the man he realized that the man’s face was incredibly swollen, red with dried blood and purple with bruises.
“What happened-” He began in confusion at the sight of his father’s face, sighing--which looked incredibly strange on him looking the way he did--he explained.
“Well the man’s temper was extinguished upon my face obviously. My face’s awkwardness shouldn’t be the topic of our discussion right now.” Haytham grumbled as he leaned back in his seat. “What I should be discussing is the plan that hopefully Charles understood, or even Achilles.” Connor tilted his head, since when did Haytham explain a plan to them? Surely not in front of Washington or his guards or else they would have known.
“I did it with motions, Connor.” He started as he glanced down to his bound hands, making him follow with his eyes. “I tried mouthing at first, but the swollen portion on my cheeks prevented an accurate telling of information. So I made the shape of an L with my fingers,” He point his thumb and pointer fingers outwards while the others remained in a tight fist, creating the L, “Before I counted out a number.” He formed his hands back in a fist before slowly putting each one out. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. “ Which they hopefully realized I was telling them just which ship is Washington’s. The fifth down starting from the left side of the bay.”
“What are they going to do with-” Connor paused as he glanced at the eyes of the mindless men around him, if they started speaking one of them could tell Washington.
“They can’t do anything about it.” Haytham interjected as he caught onto Connor’s worry. “All they can do is stand guard. Washington can’t read their minds to know of what I set in motion.”
“. . . . . .What are our allies going to do with the information you gave them then? Just because they know what ship Washington is on does not erase the fact that they have an entire fleet to face.” Connor admits that while he had won dire naval battles before didn’t mean it he nearly lost as well. Faulkner was an incredible sailor, but Connor doubted that even his first mate could get out of a situation such as this. He slumped back in his seat as he awaited his father’s response.
“Hopefully they’ll think of something, or perhaps get incredibly lucky. However I think they’ll manage because Washington’s scared.” The smirk that spread across his lips was malicious, his eyes were full of cunning and twisting ploys, it did little to comfort.
“Why is he scared? Does it not mean that he will be extra careful in this battle? Giving us less of a chance?” He questioned lightly as he frowned when his father chuckled.
“He is not scared that he will lose, in that area of his mind he is already throwing a celebration at the defeat of your allies. That arrogance will more than likely be the end of him and hopefully put a stop to him during the battle. No, he is terrified because he believes the Apple’s power is dying.” Connor blinked in shock.
“Is the Apple losing power?” He asked lightly, a tad worried that it might actually not be the case, letting his hopes of Washington losing his kingdom, his army, his darkness get crushed by the actual truth.
“No, as far as I can tell the Apple has an infinite supply of energy. Well, so we think. But tell me this if Washington wasn’t worried about the artifact wouldn’t he just possess everyone on the homestead and have you brought to him?” Haytham looked genuinely surprised that Connor might actually believe Washington had truly wanted to be diplomatic, or at least give them a shot at fighting him off.
“Well I did not think really anything of it.” He answered truthfully, feeling his heart sink at his father’s scoff.
“The reason Washington hasn’t turned the homestead residents into his personal monkeys was because he had first used the Apple on us.”
“Us?” Connor asked once again perplexed by Haytham’s explanation. Was he talking about all those years ago when Washington had kept him under control? How was that supposed to scare him? The Apple had worked, subjecting him to Washington’s command for all those years, if anything that helped him.
“Yes. When we were on the ship he tried to use the Apple on me, so I could infiltrate the homestead as a ‘friend’ before stealing you back. However when he used it on me I merely remained frozen in place is all, the Apple could not effect my mind as it did the others in his army. I suppose that is because of certain ancestors in my family heritage who had such capabilities as well. Washington gave up on me and then tried to do it on you, I’m guessing you were either asleep when it happened or you didn’t really pay it much mind at the time.” He paused looking at him closely, the experience Haytham was speaking about easily poked itself out at him. He had been cooking dinner at the time, helping Achilles prepare the meat for that night’s stew when he had suddenly seized up, barely able to breath. He had first blown the feeling off when he had felt his body return to normal, simply summing up the experience as a flashback to his captivity. He glanced up as Haytham continued speaking. “When you didn’t come running Washington gave up and put the Apple away before happily beating in my face, taking out his nervousness on me. We are incredibly lucky that he only tried to use the Apple on us for if he tried it on anyone else not only would we be in a more, complicated situation, everyone else would probably be dead already.”
Although his father’s answer should have cleared up any confusion he felt it left him with more questions than answers. “But Washington used the Apple on me before while I was in his custody, why wouldn’t it work now?”
“I was wondering if you ask me that. Our body’s can be manipulated by the Apple in the way that they freeze up, but never our minds. When Washington began raving about the Apple and you it sounded as if he tried to use the Apple to control your mind however you were unconscious at the time, so in response the Apple just kept you unconscious through out the duration he used its ‘influence’ upon you. He had believed it to be mind control, which inevitably worked to our advantage with him believing the Apple to be losing power. I don’t know what he plans on doing now, but perhaps his paranoia will get the best of him, believing that at any moment the soldiers under his command could turn against him. It will be much easier for him to slip up now.” Haytham finished as he leaned back in his chair, a lazy smirk spreading across his lips. “All we must do now is wait.”
Connor slumped back in his seat feeling no more positive than he had before. So he was never really under the command of the Apple the entire time, he had just been, in essence, truly asleep. He supposes that’s better than being turned into one of Washington’s brainless puppets after all however that didn’t mean he was completely free of the artifact. The idea of his body being turned into something completely helpless and vulnerable frightened him, the thought of being bound without chains. He heard himself scoff, he was already bound now, his body completely useless to his whims, no longer able to do anything he could before. This is the worse fate.
“Son.” He glanced up when Haytham spoke softly, concern in his eyes. “While I realize we are still and will probably remain enemies for the rest of time I want you to know that I’m sorry. It was stupid of me to decide to leave you, a mere foolish child, in such conditions for as long as I did. I will not apologize for my course of action by trying to steal the Apple first, as was my original intent, instead of you because that would have made sure all of what is happening now avoided. However I will admit that not even my worst enemy deserved such a cruel fate that was given to you behind Washington’s palace walls. No fully grown man could handle what you went through, and you, barely a boy and far from being a young man, pulled through very strongly. It is incredible, and while I’m disappointed that you will more than likely never become a Templar once you recover I have no doubt that you will become a great Assassin. Just make sure that you don’t get it my way, because I’ll still kill you.” He fell quiet for a moment, seeming to be considering how to put into words what he wanted to say. “I do not expect to be forgiven for my actions, nor do I care to be. I just wanted you to know that if there was anything I had planned to do to be rid of you it was certainly and never would be this.”
Connor let out a laugh as Haytham finished his confession, wiping away the tears from his eyes as he fell into quiet chuckling. Although his father had just admitted that it was extremely possible that he would be killing him in the future and had been planning to for sometime, he was grateful for his honesty. In fact he was thankful that his father wasn’t trying to manipulate him with kindness like before and sway him over to the Templar cause through deception. He was just being cranky, old Haytham Kenway who acted like a bratty child when things didn’t go his way and boasted so smugly when he did. It was a man that he knew just what to expect from, a man he could trust.
“I forgive you.”
OP LOVES YOU!
(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 07:30 am (UTC)(link)I loved the ending of this chapter with Connor forgiving Haytham in the end, really want to see more father-son bonding time; and perhaps Haytham, Achilles and Kanen'tó:kon can help Connor recover both physically and emotionally.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 07:50 am (UTC)(link)Love Haytham's plan, though. Hopefully Washington will uphold his end of the deal and let Connor go free.
And, maybe with time, Connor will heal?
