Altair/Malik --- Spontaneous meeting
(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)Malik, as disheveled (hair running wild + half dressed in pajamas or just a bathrobe) grumpy and sleepy as he is, can't refuse Kadar's puppy eyes®. He comes to pick him up and meets Altair who is keeping Kadar company. Kadar suggests Altair ride along for a few blocks. Malik is mortified. 'cause this Altair is kinda hot, and you don't usually make a striking image looking like something the cat dragged in.
Altair is stony-faced, but secretly amused when he notices Malik's discomfort.
Bonus: Datedatedatedatedate Especially if Kadar sets them up somehow.
Super bonus: Malik arrives in slippers. Yep. Those fluffy-looking ones.

'Malik... please. Pick up pick up pick up'
'Pick up pick up pick up pick up pick up pick up pick up pick up pick up'

Malik groaned and was close to throw his phone across the room if it wouldn't stop vibrating and blinking and making all those god damn noises right away! He rubbed his eyes, still heavy from sleep and searched for the small switch to his nightstand's lamp, a soft glowing orange illuminating his bedroom almost instantly as soon as he turned it on. His phone, laying oh so innocent on his nightstand, kept buzzing and Malik grabbed it with a low growl that could turn the biggest dog into a scared little puppy. A quick touch to the screen popped his messages open and he read through them, seeing that they all came from just one person. Probably the most annoying person in the whole world, his little brother.
Malik propped himself up on one arm, rubbing his eyes with his one hand while still trying to figure out if he should reply or just turn off his phone and go back to sleep when a call came in, the picture of Kadar showing up on his screen. But since he was a good brother-
“Yes.”
“Did I wake you up?”
There was a long moment of silence, Malik could hear somebody talking in the background and Kadar's breathing. “Yes...”, Malik said slowly and in a quiet voice, turning on his back with his blanket riding down his hips, throwing one arm over his eyes to shield them from the light.
“I need a ride, I sort of missed the last bus and-”
“That's not my problem”, Malik cut through his words. Kadar was old enough to take care of something like this on his own and besides, it was what time? Almost three in the morning? Malik knew that the last bus leaves around eleven so there really was no excuse such as 'missed the last bus'. “Call mom and dad-”
“No! I can't call them, I- come on Malik, please? I only have a few bucks left, I can't afford a cab... please.”
Malik knew all too well that calling their parents wasn't an option. Kadar wasn't even 21 yet, not supposed to drink and he certainly wasn't supposed to stay out almost all night long. Their parents were pretty liberal and all but even they had their limits.
“Crash at some of your friends then, I've worked all day I just wanna sleep”, Malik muttered and was about to end the call when he could hear Kadar cursing on the other side of the line. “Ugh is that the same mouth you kiss your mother with?”
“Malik- I'm just asking you for this one favor. Come on please, I have hardly any money left and the night really wasn't as good-”
“Wasn't as good my ass”, Malik snorted. Kadar's night out had probably been great or else why would he call him at three in the morning asking to pick him up with almost no money left? Didn't sound like a bad night to be honest. “Alright-”
“Oh thank fucking god, Malik! You're the best!”
“-where are you at?”
“I, uhm... Scenic Drive near Greyhound?”
Malik sat up in his bed. “What the-? That's all the way across the city!”
“Yeah I know- see why I can't afford a cab?”
Malik gnawed on his lip sourly. “Yeah I see... wait there, I'll be there in about half an hour.”
“Thanks bro.”
He ended the call and stared at his phone clutched in his hand. If he wouldn't love his little brother so much he would probably just tell him to go fuck himself and forget about it but- yeah, Malik was the good brother, the kind of brother who taught Kadar how to drive a bicycle or how to swim. Who'd watched him when their parents were away on date night, who'd cooked for him and tugged him into bed. Yes, Malik was that kind of brother and that was exactly the reason why he now got out of bed tiredly, wearing nothing but an old pair of sweats he liked to sleep in and an old t-shirt, putting on his slippers. He would only jump in his car and drive up to Kadar, there was no need for dressing fancy.
He opened the door to his bedroom, stumbling out into his living room with a small kitchen unit in it and grabbed his car key from the dresser standing next to his door and went out into the hall of the apartment complex he was living at. It wasn't anything big but he liked his place, mainly because it was his own place where he could do whatever the hell he wanted without having his overprotective mother sitting in his neck – which didn't mean Malik didn't like to come over at Sundays to eat with his parents and maybe have some coffee too. He took the stairs down and was quickly out in the parking lot. It was in the middle of the night and yet it were about 80 °F which was pretty normal in the middle of summer in New Mexico. Ugh, he was supposed to be in his bed, sleeping and where it was all comfy and cuddly– not driving around the city in the middle of the night to pick up his little brother.
He didn't need half an hour to get to Kadar, it was early in the morning after all and there was hardly any traffic so Malik set a new record of arriving there in just about twenty minutes or something. Kadar was sitting on the curb with his head between his legs and another dude sitting a few feet away from him near the gas station he'd told Malik he'd be at. He stopped his car next to Kadar, leaning over to the passenger's seat to open the window there. “Come on hop in”, he said but all Kadar did was lifting his head lazily, looking at Malik with small eyes. Oh god damn it...
Malik turned off the engine to get out, walking around to stand next to his brother and nudged him with his foot not too gently. “Get up, your cab is here. You haven't been this drunk when you called me!”
“'m just tired”, Kadar groaned and got up on two shaky legs – alright, so he wasn't that drunk but he still was drunk. “We need to give Altair a ride too.”
Malik had already made his way back to his side of the car and stopped just when he was about to open the door. “What now?”
“Altair”, Kadar said and pointed with his thumb at the man sitting not too far away. Malik followed the gesture but his head snapped back when he heard the passenger's door falling shut. “You didn't tell me about your friend”, he said after he'd opened his own door, leaning down to look at Kadar.
“Because I knew you'd say no... come on, Altair's cool – I've met him today and he asked for a ride so I told him yes.”
“You've just met him at this party?”, Malik asked in disbelieve but Kadar grinned and frowned just a second later, looking at Malik confused. “No he just walked by when I called you”, he said and Malik groaned and wiped his face with one hand. “Altair needs to find another ride then.”
“But I've promised him we'd give him one”, Kadar whined rather loudly and rolled his head sideways looking up at Malik and now Malik knew it'd taken all of Kadar's willpower to sound as sober as possible on the phone so his brother wouldn't notice just how wasted he really was. If Malik weren't so damn tired he'd almost say it was cute. He looked back and to that Altair guy. “You don't even know him he could be a nutjob or something.”
“No, no he's really okay man”, Kadar slurred. “He goes to university too but he's going to graduate this summer.”
Malik sighed and looked at this Altair rather suspicious. “He just walked by, I mean when I called you”, Kadar told him again, “- aw shit Malik, don't ask such complicated question I really have no idea, he just asked me if I have a lighter and I recognized him from campus.”
Malik still wasn't convinced but eventually he took a deep breath and pushed himself away from the car. “Alright”, he nodded. “Alright I give him a lift”, and he could hear how Kadar cheered a weak little 'yay' in the car. He groaned again and then walked over to the figure sitting underneath the street light. “Hey”, he called over. “Come on, Kadar says you need a ride.”
He looked up then, arms crossed over his knees, hair a bit ruffled. He seemed as if he'd had a hard night so far, eyes bloodshot but other than that he looked in a pretty good shape... like... real good shape and- Altair smiled a little, his gaze clearing and mhpf, he didn't look too bad when smiling. “You look as if you just rolled out of bed”, he said and Malik noticed the faintest tracks of an accent in his voice. He stopped dead in his tracks and looked down. Oh. He thought the sweatpants weren't too bad just as his shirt but what set his cheeks aflame was the fact he was wearing his slippers. It weren't normal slippers. Those were slippers made in Mongolia with the tips going a little up, looking almost like those wooden shoes from the Netherlands. His mother had bought him the slippers once from the market since Malik always complained about cold feet and yes, they didn't look good or were 'hip' but they kept your feet pretty damn well warm but now? Now he regret his choice of clothing style for the night deeply because shit, this guy actually was sort of... attractive.
“Because I did thanks to my idiotic brother”, Malik growled and tried his best not to show his embarrassment. “And he says you need a ride so get your ass up and into the car.”
Altair scrunched his nose. “No need to get so grumpy Malik.”
“What?” Malik looked at him dumbfounded. “I don't think I introduced myself-”
“Yeah but your brother did”, Altair grinned and got up, walking past Malik but stopped then. “Thank you”, he said and Malik thought he sounded pretty sober, quite the opposite from how he looked.
“So you had a rough night I take it?”, Malik pondered when they entered the car.
“Mmmmh... you could say it like that”, Altair hummed and leaned his chin on the driver's seat, looking out into the night over Malik's shoulder – it didn't help that Malik could feel his breath on his neck and he could smell the faintest tracks of alcohol.
“So where do I need to drop you off?”, he pondered and started his car, pulling out into White Sands Boulevard.
“Where do you live?”
Malik arched an eyebrow and looked at Altair through the rearview mirror. “Mars Avenue... why?”
Altair shook his head, smiling a little. “To see if it's anywhere near my place. Mars like the planet?” Malik nodded, “Yeah like the planet so – is it anywhere near your place?”
“No”, Altair shook his head, “but you can drop me off there anyway, I walk from there.”
At that Malik frowned. “I can give you a lift home you know?” Wow – where did that come from? A few minutes ago he would have been happy with dumping Altair somewhere as long as it would get him faster back into bed. But now it seemed Altair wasn't such an unpleasant conversation partner. His voice was rather nice to listen to...
“Nah it's okay. If I wouldn't have met Kadar and if he wouldn't have offered me the ride I would have walked all night through the city to get back home.”
“Yeah you know that's what they have cabs for...”
Altair snorted, “If I had the money for a cab I would have gotten myself one.”
“So you spent everything tonight for beer, huh?”, Malik pondered and this was sort of a lame question to get to know what Altair has been up to. But Altair was polite enough to oversee his bluntness. “Not really, more like as in my wallet got stolen.”
“Aw fuck”, Malik said and looked at Altair with pity. “Shit, did you go to the police?”
Again, Altair snorted. “Yeah and they get it back for me – no, I already canceled all my cards and reported my ID as stolen so there's really nothing left to take care of.”
Malik 'mh'd and turned his focus back onto the street, the bright orange lights of the street lamps passing them like little round orbs and he kept silent for the rest of the drive after he tried one or two times to get Kadar to talk with him. His brother was fast asleep by the time they arrived at Malik's apartment and Malik left the engine on but leaned back around to face Altair. “So we're here”, he said and didn't feel tired at all.
Altair looked at him, meeting his gaze. “Alright”, he said and Malik thought he could see the corner of his lips twitch as if he tried to suppress a smile and he leaned forward again, chin on Malik's seat once more bringing their faces so close together they almost breathed the same air. “I have a few dollars left you know?”, Altair said and Malik rose both eyebrows. “So?”
“Breakfast? You and me. The kid can sleep it off in the car.”
Malik scrunched his nose. “I'm not really a breakfast person...”
Altair's shoulders slumped a little. “Aw, okay I see. I'm sorry-”
“But I have another idea”, Malik grinned and put the car into first gear, driving off into the street and left the apartment complex he was living at behind them.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 11:02 am (UTC)(link)“What, getting coffee?”, Altair chuckled and leaned against the hood of Malik's car with one hand in the pocket of his jacket, the other one holding a cup of coffee as well. Kadar was still sitting in the passenger's seat, sleeping off his drunkenness. He looked almost adorable like this, all curled up and drooling in his sleep.
“Having coffee with a man I barely know”, Malik huffed. “And that comment almost made me regret my decision you know?”, he added in a warning. “So why do you have coffee with me in the parking lot of the Space History Museum at almost 5 in the morning?”, Altair pondered carefully, his eyes still small and looking tired. “I mean I be honest with you, you looked like as if you were ready to rip my head off when I first saw you.”
“Oh I was”, Malik grinned a little. “But you know it's not your fault for Kadar making promises he can't keep and all- and you looked as if you've had a bad night - which turned out to be true when you've told me your wallet got stolen and all”, he added. “And I can be a nice person and thought some coffee would do you good. You're acting pretty sober but I can tell, you too drank a little too much tonight.”
Altair chuckled. “So this is just you being a Samaritan huh?”
Malik snorted at that. “Maybe...” He hid his little smile behind the cup of coffee and took another sip of it. “Kadar said you're about to graduate.” Altair nodded and swallowed some of his own coffee. “Yes I'm about to become an engineer”, he said in a matter of fact voice, flicking against a little crumble on his pants.
“That's impressive”, Malik said and fumbled with the lid of his coffee. “I mean that's good, really good.”
“It's not that big of a deal”, Altair grinned and Malik could tell he felt uncomfortable as if he didn't like it to be in the center of attention. It was funny because the first time he'd seen him he'd thought it'd be different – probably because of the way how he smirked. That little scar he wore over his lips made him sort of look smug all the time.
“You're humble about it aren't you? I mean about getting your degree.”
Altair smiled a little and looked down to the ground, kicking against a small stone there. “I used to brag about my skills a lot when I was younger but- Well, let's just say sometimes things happen in your life that make you change.”
Somehow Malik thought the statement felt heavier than it sounded and he could tell how Altair's shoulders tensed a little so he decided not to push it. “I see”, he muttered. “I mean I can see why you would want to study engineering here”, he added with a small wink. Altair chuckled at that.
“Yes you would guess that studying engineering in the state where the A-bomb was invented would be a good idea.”
“Well we have a pretty good space program too.”
Altair snorted, “Yeah you know I've been here for five years now and I still didn't get to watch my shuttle landing.”
“Well to be fair they only land here when the weather is bad in California-”
“Well I so hoped for that”, Altair grinned and it was the moment Malik realized that maybe they were both starting to somehow... flirt with each other.
Now, here comes the thing you need about Malik when it comes to flirting: he doesn't do it often. He actually couldn't remember the last time when he'd flirted but Malik thought his behavior now was as close to flirting as it would get. Second, he was gay and that was just dandy. His parents knew, his brother knew, his close friends knew – he was glad for having all of their support, especially in a state like New Mexico and the small town he was living at, that was something you just didn't take for granted.
“So you're into that sort of... stuff?”, Malik asked helplessly.
“Course I am”, Altair snorted then turned his head to look up the small hill where the museum was standing on top of it. “So maybe I should have waited till nine when the museum opens and take you there”, Malik said and his heart was beating wildly because even Altair would understand now that this wasn't just something Malik would ask but what sort of sounded like a... date.
“Maybe you should have”, Altair hummed quietly and took a rather large sip of his coffee. “You can still take me”, he added with a small wink and all the tension melted right off of Malik's shoulders.
He released a small breath of air. “So how about tomorrow?”
“How about later today?”, Altair grinned. “I mean after I got to sleep a bit.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumbled piece of paper but then dropped it to the ground. “I don't have a pen with me”, he said at Malik's questioning look. “Can I have your phone?”
“What for?”, and Altair rolled his eyes. “To save my number into it of course”, he chuckled and it made Malik flush a little but he did reach into his pocket, his hands trembling only a bit when he handed Altair his cell over. “There you go.”
“You should give me a call later”, Altair said once he returned Malik's phone, looking over his shoulder as he did so. “And I think your brother is about to get sick.”
“Wha- wait, what?” Malik's eyes narrowed and he turned around, watching how Kadar looked right at him, one hand covering his mouth and eyes wide before he quickly opened the door of Malik's car, stumbled outside only to empty his stomach right next to it. Malik's face turned into a disgusted mask. “Oh dear...”
“You should tell him not to go to these freshmen parties anymore”, Altair said completely unimpressed and watched the White Sands and the city to their feet while Kadar puked behind them rather loudly.
Malik scrunched his nose. “Probably.”
xxx
“Here's a bucket in case you need to barf again”, Malik said and sat down onto his bed which was currently occupied by his little brother who's eyes were already closed. He made a small miserable sound and Malik couldn't help it but smile, his fingers running through his hair in a gently manner. “You just ruined my night, well, morning you know that? Couldn't have picked a better moment to decide to get sick”, he sighed.
“...sorry”, Kadar said in a low rumble of his voice, all small and miserable.
“It's okay”, Malik grinned, “I will get my revenge when you're better alright?”
“... okay...”
Malik laughed at that in a low voice. “There's water next to the bed when you get thirsty and some aspirin... I'm going to drive Altair home now.”
At that Kadar cracked one eye open and looked at Malik. “Altair?”, he asked confused and it made Malik shook his head because really, right now it was rather pointless to explain anything to Kadar – he probably couldn't remember right now that he'd asked his brother to give Altair a ride as well. He probably didn't even know who Altair was at that moment.
“Nothing”, Malik said, “but I'll be gone for a bit. Mom and dad know you're not coming home right?”
“Told- told them I stay with a friend”, Kadar slurred.
“Good”, Malik nodded, “so at least they're not worried sick. I bring you breakfast on my way back alright?”
“... alright...”, Kadar sighed again and Malik could tell he was almost back to sleep again. “Alright”, he nodded and got up, leaving the door to his bedroom open and watched how Altair got up from his couch. “Kid's safe in the bed, we can go now”, he said and pointed with his thumb back to his bedroom.
Altair stood. “Aren't your afraid I might be some weirdo?”, he grinned at Malik.
“You hang out with my brother, I already know you're a weirdo”, Malik grinned and ushered Altair out of his apartment.
