Re: Shay/Hope - angry sex

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Then again maybe not, because as soon as some fans complained about Connor being boring they dropped him like a hot iron, nevermind that he's easily one of the most complex characters in the series. And now Ubi is selling us a game full of really dumb glitches while going on about how state of the art it is, with a protagonist that's more or less Ezio 2.0 right down to the hairstyle.
"Ezio 2.0" was THE first thing I noticed about Arno without the hood... however, Darby McDevitt admitted on Twitter that although AC3 had been the highest-selling AC game, the 'universal' praise that supposedly only Ezio got what was got him three games to everyone else's one-and-done. (Personally, I wonder if him being the only 'straight white male' player Assassin until Edward had anything to do with that... and I'm actually still annoyed that there was never a playable Chinese male Assassin.)

The glitches are funny because of how frequently visual they've been, but a more fundamental problem for me with Unity is the story:
#1: Arno: All the "Ezio 2.0" look, none of the "Ezio 1.0" charm, and characterization-wise... let's just say that there's a good fucking reason he ended up as he did.
#2: Both of this year's AC games basically concluded with the Templars going "neener neener i win lol"... problem is, according to Ubisoft they were well and completely right (if not morally). More broadly speaking though, Ubisoft seems to really, really prefer telling stories about Templars than Assassins... and possibly have since AC3 (if one chooses to read the difference in Connor and Haytham's writing that way).

Haha, glad to know I was not the only one who had that thought about Arno. Yeah, his personality and story are different, but not exactly in a good way? Not that I hate him or anything, but let's say that sometimes it sure seems like the writers do.

And yes, it kind of feels like they've been shoving a lot of Templar philosophy down our throats ever since Haytham. In a way it's interesting to see both sides and let the Templars make their point too, but for me they're overdoing it. Then again, saying the Templar ideology doesn't go so well with my own RL beliefs would be an understatement, so maybe it's just me.

I love Ezio as much as everyone else, but yes, I think him being this eurocentric straight white male character is a huge part of the reason why he got three games, especially when compared to the other two protagonists of the numbered games. There's Altair, a Syrian muslim, and I don't think I need to get started on islamophobia and how that might play into not wanting to revisit him. And then there's Connor/Ratonhnhaké:ton, who might technically be Metis but fully identifies as Mohawk, and not only is his in-game story the most depressing one, they also have to rub salt in the wounds of his fans by casually dropping that his (as white as possible, of course) wife and children left him, and his death was lonely and 'a mess', whatever that means. Sure I'm apparently free to reject that as Abstergo propaganda or whatever, but still. They took a story about an indigenous character, sadly a rarity in itself already, and made it almost exclusively about defeat and loss. The symbol and source of his happiness, the Homestead he tried to protect so fiercely, eventually vanishes as well, at a time that likely happens before his death, and I don't even want to know how and why anymore. What message do they think that sends? Yeah, his strength and heroic appeal is supposed to come from how he never loses hope despite all of it, but. I don't even know. His idealism touched ME, so I wish it could have touched the world around him as well, no matter how naive that is?
...and there I went on a rant again because I'm still not over AC III. I apologize, fellow anons.

I'd have loved more Chinese Assassins too, including male ones, but on a whole I think Ubi could do with more playable female characters and loved Shao Jun. But more Asian cultures in general would be great, the history and politics are so complex they could get infinite amounts of AC games out of it.

Potentially very, very, very vague spoilers of Unity from one who hasn't finished the game.

Well, I haven't finished Unity (exams, exams, exams) but the game should usher AC into Britain's Imperial Century so I had say the chances are high for another eurocentric character (if Ubisoft doesn't backtrack or make a big jump into more recent history, which Ubisoft seem to be testing waters with in Unity). The thing is that I wouldn't mind an Ezio 3 if it meant we got see India or China or something (anything really, I am desperate). There's a lot of option.s He could be an Anglo-Indian, an officer in the East Indian Company, a convict sent down under or anything really if it meant we got to see a bit more of the globe.

To despairing anon. Maybe you could apply a similar principle for canonicity as in Star Wars? AC's most canon media is the games so if they don't let you play it, you should just be able to bleh it as it would have a lower level of canonicity. I most certainly do with the sad bullshittery parts. It ties in with my point about Adé above. Main characters and other central characters shouldn't be dismissed from the franchise based on their perceived popularity and if you want to fuck them over you should do it properly. So my suggestion is to just blah it and hope Ratonhnhaké:ton's storyline is picked up later :-) They did that for Adé so why not for him?

To OP!Anon: for my digressions I will try to fill the prompt over the New Year (slow worker)
The prompt kind of stuck with me after all that ranting :-) so I am claiming it with an expiration date so you know when it's a pseudo-prompt :-)

It's NOT all not-fun and not-games for Connor

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ehhhh, Imperial Britain's already been leaked, complete with snazzy-looking screenshots and synopses. Fight atop a stagecoach! Change out the hood for a top hat in real time! Arkham style grapnel gun! MAXIMUM BRITISHNESS! Egad...

For what it's worth, Initiates (via the letters of Esesoa) had Esesoa mention that Connor had offered him (further) training at the Homestead in 1804, so that -- combined with the beginning and ending of Aveline's DLC story in Black Flag -- already offers a less obviously biased version of Connor's post-AC3 days.

(Re: "obvious bias" -- not only were there the infamous Marketing Analysis and Devils of the Caribbean/Pirates of Nightmares videos from Black Flag, but even in the Abstergo Employees Handbook the Connor blurb is right under such a "reinterpretation" of an Assassin-Templar conflict, in this case Shao Jun vs. the Jiajing Emperor... and if you check out Unity, take a look at the Modern Times "virtual experience" interface's story offerings.)

P.S. Lucasfilm has since replaced the old canonicity policy: now the movies/The Clone Wars/Rebels and all licensed works since the announcement of this 'reboot' are as canonical as each other, while all other prior works are non-canon.

Guilty admission: I usually disregards leaks, even trailers and whatnot with big franchises like AC. You really don't know whats true/untrue or just pretense. Guessing, conjecture and so on I love, but until it is official/cannot take it back/set in stone I disregard it. I bring with me enough expectations and bias into the game that I don't really need to be helped to it.

But if what you're saying is true (I am dying to trawl the internet for screenshots now. MUST RESIST), it really do sounds like AC's Imperial Britain will be everything I had hoped it not to be (especially if we get a male main playable of privilege and a stiff who flaunt his disregard for contemporary ideals). Then again 19th century Britain would be a fine launching pad for AC to explore the "Far East" (wince) as it is easily relatable from it's overrepresentation in literature, movies and history books. As long as we don't stay stuck in Britain but get to explore more world history in a respectful manner in regards to both the colonizers and the colonized then I am fine.

On Lucasfilm. I wouldn't really say its a change in canonicity policy as much as it's a reboot. The disregard of prior works in favor of later works is what a reboot is. The fact that they rebooted doesn't necessitate or equal a policy change in canonicity. Neither does the exclusion of EU. And it still seem to be applied (the motion pictures are still the most canon media). Anyways, I do think they still need it cause the sins of the past were just too delicious to not happen again and I will probably fund it again -_-;

But do you think it's a bad principle to apply to AC? Or maybe it shouldn't be applied?

Egad, I previously misfired!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Finally someone who agrees with me about 19th century Britain as "overrepresented"... and "especially if we get a male main playable of privilege"? That plus "British is trendy" will probably make Ubisoft MORE likely to go with such a player character, especially because "of privilege" screams Ezio to them, and considering how hard they tried to jam Arno into that mold without the personality which made Ezio actually liked... :/

I'd call Lucasfilm's case a mix of reboot and canonicity policy change, because instead of an EU they're going for a single canon level, no "single most canon", so for example Rebels and its prequel novel happened "as much" as the original movies did.

By the way, I've some more ruminating on the recent characters over in Discussion as "AC Character Discussion (forking from the Hope/Shay thread)", hopefully some of it interests you.

Disappointed anon would like to thank all of you for your kind replies.

On the topic of Star Wars and canonicity: I have mixed feelings about the reboot, but then again I've had mixed feelings about Lucasfilm in general for so long that it has stopped bothering me, and though I like to stick to canon and usually want to reconcile everything, I've started to apply methods from the more subversive parts of Tolkien fandom. If there are contradictory sources I accept those parts and interpretations as canon that make the most sense to me, and try not to dwell on those that don't. Yeah, that's kind of snooty, but at least I won't have to throw everything out of the window in case another reboot comes around at some point (you never know).

I think I might start interpreting AC in a similiar manner. Everything I played through is canon of course, but beyond that I'll take it or leave it as I see fit. Much less pitfalls of despair that way.

Concerning leaked content, of course they were going to do the obligatory Victorian London scenario. It's widely known that no interesting events took place anywhere else in the world during the 19th century after all.
In earnest now, it would be nice if they used that to show India and/or Africa, or perhaps the Opium Wars with China, and touched on the conflicts that arose from the expansion of the British Empire, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Recent AC Character Talk Ahoy!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, glad to know I was not the only one who had that thought about Arno. Yeah, his personality and story are different, but not exactly in a good way? Not that I hate him or anything, but let's say that sometimes it sure seems like the writers do.
I felt that Ezio had his own problems even in Brotherhood and for me the bottom fell out with Revelations, but for me Arno earned his fall in a way that Ezio never did in AC2. (Then again, from what I got of Rogue and Unity, there was something seriously up with the mid-1700s European Assassins.)
At this point, it feels less like Ubisoft believing that the Templars are right (look at how often they undermine that!) and more like them living vicariously through Abstergo Entertainment and would rather tell stories about Templars... which, frankly, is what Unity is.
I love Ezio as much as everyone else, but yes, I think him being this eurocentric straight white male character is a huge part of the reason why he got three games, especially when compared to the other two protagonists of the numbered games.
I'll mildly disagree with you insofar as Altaïr if only because I don't recall Islamophobic views of him being prevalent after he debuted, but also because his AC1 story was him being flawed from the get-go and building himself back up, as opposed to "goodie two-shoes all the way through" (if Ubisoft had Ezio grow as an Assassin in wake of his own mistakes, I sure missed that!) That is to say, I believe that both "straight white male" and "less complex/not really flawed" played a role in why he was so "universally" praised... heck, just look at Edward Kenway.

Considering how much we have to say on these subjects, would you like to continue this conversation elsewhere? In particular, I'd absolutely love to continue to train of thought about Chinese Assassins. (Though, cynically in light of what I said about Ezio, I'll suggest that "the history and politics are so complex" is probably WHY we haven't had a playable Chinese Assassin until now.)

Hmm, perhaps we should all consider relocating to the discussion thread and clear the space here for the upcoming fill?

(And then proceed to speculate about Chinese Assassins, yes good.)

Happy to discuss!

Would you like to start that? Because I did, I'd probably end up replying to multiple anons' posts in the same OP!

given how unity handled the revolution, i'm very skeptical to ubisoft taking on china in that large a game. don't get me wrong -- i'd adore the specific setting in a main game, preferably with a female lead, bc we haven't had one in a major title, but i'm not going to hold my breath about a) it being done perfectly, or b) being given a woc as lead. everyone loves élise, but she's already a commercial success on her being white cis euro nobility, so it's not a difficult sell. now i'm tracking off, so anyway, what i was going to comment was really that imo it was never as apparent as it became in unity, how ubisoft weren't able to integrate the historical setting into the assassin vs templar war.
in 1 it was about altaïr's redemption, in 2 about ezio's growth, in 3, which i haven't finished, i think the american revolution was more integrated into the story, and was probably the most successful at incorporating its setting into its story? obviously it was about connor, but his story felt very tightly woven with the revolution, so i suppose i can accept that. meanwhile, 4 was back to being about edward (being a dick with zero likeable personality), whilst unity steers more towards 3's using the revolution as a plot necessity. to, mixed results. idk, i felt it was super right wing and presented poorly, and that's why i'm very skeptical towards a china setting for a main title. if they don't do it properly then i'm not sure i want to see them botch it just bc i want more diversity.

I like the way you think

(Anonymous) 2014-12-19 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
everyone loves élise, but she's already a commercial success on her being white cis euro nobility, so it's not a difficult sell.
Please allow me to focus on the last part -- Arno's the first (and only) "nobleman" since Ezio, and from what I can tell that was another item in Ezio's commercial success due to how often people focused on that over the "banker's son" part... I wonder if Ubisoft specifically decided that "hereditary noble" has to be a "big seller" protagonist trait (which itself lends some disquieting theory about the nature of the French Revolution's depiction).
idk, i felt it was super right wing and presented poorly
Funny how Ubisoft purported that our history was Templar propaganda but in turn their "history" ran on anti-Revolution monarchist mythology and their plot had little to do with the Revolution except through Templar plotting...

I hear you re: AC Chronicles: China not being treated as a major game by Ubisoft, but after hearing Jing Lang's voice acting in Black Flag (and to a degree Shao Jun's in Embers'), I'm not sure I could stomach a full game's worth of similar voice acting, whether for female or male Chinese characters, the latter of whom I'll note remain conspicuously absent in way more media than just AC...

Shall we continue this in Discussion, as I've suggested above?

Don't worry anon I won't ever get over Connor as well. I'm an Australian Indigenous person with white family members and it was beyond incredible to me to be able to play as a character that was so relatable. Personality wise he's probably a lot kinder than I am, but I find him infinitely more relatable than Altair and Ezio, both way too cocky for me to deal with and Ezio is too... Ugh. Whoreish is the word I'll go with. Not to say I didn't enjoy those games of course, but they weren't my favourites.

I felt offended when I found out that Connor supposedly married a whiter than white woman, who then left him. And he kept a lock of her hair??? What the fuck?!?!?! Way to drive home the 'savage' image. This is the first I've heard of ac3 being the most sold game. Why couldn't we get a sequel. My heart hurts so much

I rushed out to buy unity and was severely disappointed. I literally cannot express my disgust enough. Thankfully my housemate agreed to 'trade' and I got his Ac3 figurine and he got my Ezio 2.0 game.
