Okay, then have you read "Synchronous"? It's a slightly alternate universe, in which Desmond and Clay are both captive at Abstergo at the same time, then manage to escape together. Neither one really wants to be an Assassin.
There are funny parts but it gets quite angsty later on and really heartbreaking at the end. The last chapter never fails to make me fucking cry my eyes out.
